    I’m glad I found this video as it’s very informative, but unfortunately none of those things have worked for me. Last time I saw a needle my vision turned blurry, I felt small/helpless, and I had these waves of terror going through my body which made me feel like I was going insane and resulted in me not getting the injection despite my doctor telling me how important it was. I’ve even tried drugs like benzos and laughing gas which ended up making my fear even worse. If anyone has this deep evil fear that I do, please tell me how you cope with it.

      Hi Braiden. Unfortunately there are many people in the same situation as you, where the fear is so strong they have not been able to complete the desensitisation phase of therapy. (btw any therapy that does not include desensitisation is not worth doing). The people who do manage to overcome it fall into 2 groups. The first is people who have completed desensitisation through one of these therapies. The second is people who are terrified and maybe shaking and crying but go ahead anyway. This approach is known as flooding in psychology terms and is not recommended because it is so traumatic but I know some who have done this. Some of those in the first group have had several attempts at therapy over decades before finally finding a therapy and therapist that works for them so don't give up.

      Same, in getting a vaccine today and I am terrified. My tip that I usually do is recognizing that it will hurt a bit and that it’s only something quick. You could do math while getting your injection. You could slowly count to 10 and back to 1. Every time you go to a higher number. You could watch a show or UA-cam on your phone (if you have one) to distract you.

    Great video. You are clearly knowledgeable and experienced (unlike many other youtube therapists!). I have tried many therapies for my 45 year needle phobia (none have worked) and am desperately trying to self-help as I need the Covid 'jab'. I am currently forcing myself to watch exposure therapy videos of injections (it's horrible) to try and finally overcome this. I know this is probably too fast, but I don't have much time to waste! Wish me luck!

      Thanks Rob. Needle phobia can be a tough one as its often deep rooted in childhood experience. One tip I can give you is try to force positive body language while doing the exposure therapy. i.e. try to look like you are not scared even if you are. Have a look at my video 'what not to do in a panic attack' which sort of covers this (although its geared towards panic disorder)

      @@TheAnxietyAttic can i ask why a bad childhood experience leads to this phobia for a lifetime? I had a very traumatic needle experience when i was 4 and am petrified of them even at 34 now. I feel like we should grow out of these things when we start to think more rationally.

    • @TheAnxietyAttic
      @TheAnxietyAttic  2 роки тому +1

      @@gemma8611 Most fears naturally decline with time but if the fear is reinforced through safety behaviours (avoidance, seeking reassurance, trying to mitigate the perceived pain etc) then the fear is reinforced and grows. These safety behaviours often start in childhood and continue into adulthood. This is why the CBT approach for phobias involves reduction of safety behaviours (to stop the reinforcement of fear) and gradual exposure therapy to teach the fear part of the brain that there is no danger.

    Thank you for this video, it's super informative, I have quite a bad phobia of needles and I think I've always had it a little bit since I was a kid, then I had to get nine injections in my mouth for a dental procedure when I was around 10 (it was supposed to only be 8 injections but one of them didn't work); I was crying and screaming the whole time, they considered anaesthesia but my parents said no, and I think that's why my phobia is much worse now than as a kid. I've always just sort of avoided getting injections when I can, but when I have to get one I usually check one off the list of fainting, vomiting, panic attack. I've only just considered getting help for it because I've realised it's quite serious, especially during covid times where I do want a covid vaccine for others' safety and I sorta want it to not be as traumatic as previous vaccines. Thank you again, finally going to ask my parents about it today, I appreciate your help :]

      Needle phobia reactions can be really intense. Desensitisation used in therapies like CBT and hypnotherapy can reduce the intensity and often extinguish the fear completely but it can be a long and difficult process for some.

  • @carlosmelendez8317

    My main needle phobia is the blood draw procedure. I can go get a flu shot and be fine usually because the needle is in the upper arm. I cannot fathom the idea of a needle going into the vein in my top elbow and blood coming out. It's so bad I can't even watch other ppl get blood drawn. I have to completely leave the room. Also even seeing ppl with that wrap around their arm after blood draw makes me weak and feel like fainting. Anyone ever heard of this type of needle phobia? If they drew blood from a vein like lower down near the forearm instead of the elbow I could probably do it fine. I think for me it's not the needle itself but the location it's going. Help???

    • @TheAnxietyAttic
      @TheAnxietyAttic  2 роки тому +1

      There are often variations on most phobias. With needle phobia for some people its the needle, for others its the blood but Im sure there will be others for who the location is the issue. Whatever the variation, the principles of treatment are the same. Try and find someone trained in both CBT and hypnotherapy. If you struggle with the desensitisation used in CBT the hypnotherapy can help relax you. Hypnotherapy on its own can be a bit hit and miss though.

    This has been a problem for me for 50 years! I have tried everything! Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, and I have a full vaso vagal syncope reaction which feels like I am dying.. I have found that the medical community does not take this seriously, and glosses over it when I try to explain my reaction beforehand..What has recently worked for me, Is telling the tech, nurse, or Dr. “ THIS IS WHAT WE HAVE TO DO” for a blood test..In my case, it is not putting tourniquet too tight, ( that is usually when it begins) and having a conversation with me through the whole procedure (total distraction), I do not think that is asking too much, and it worked during my last blood test..

    Thanks for no pictures of needles. I have had needle & blood phobia for many years, up to the point where I can't go into a room where there may be needles present (medical ones, not knitting). Although I managed to avoid getting a Covid vaccination (couldn't even approach within a few metres of the vaccination hub) I know that it is inhibiting my access to health services, and I had to abandon my doctor's appointment when he said he'd need a blood sample. However, the thought of undertaking therapy that wold eventually let me deal with injections of blood tests is terrifying. I don't think I could even start it.

      In therapy ultimately you will have to face a needle eventually but if the desensitisation process is done correctly you should be feeling a lot less fear by the time you reach that stage.

    • @TheAnxietyAttic
      @TheAnxietyAttic  2 роки тому +1

      I had a brief fever also. Its quite common. Its just the immune system reacting to the vaccine. (which is what crates immunity). The good thing is that you did not avoid the vaccine and now that you have recovered you will hopefully fear the vaccine less. (Avoidance increase fear). Vaccines have been very effective. The UK were one of the leaders in the vaccine roll out and the number of deaths and hospitalisations dropped massively as a result. My whole family had Delta and thanks to the vaccine my wife and I were ill for just 3 days. Some of my unvaccinated friends have not been so lucky.
      Thankfully Covid seems to have mutated to a much milder variant in Omicron so this should be the end of it.

    To be honest I get panicattacks from needles. When ever I get to know that, I will have a needle in my body, I start to cry even though nothing happened yet. I can't stop shaking and crying while waiting for the doctor/nurse (it depends), to come and eather give me the shot or to draw my blood. And when they finally enter the room, it gets worse. My breathing gets heavier and heavier untill they give me the shot, and I am unable to breath, in that moment I am not crying anymore as much because of the needle but because my through closes up, and everything gets darker and dizzier. So during and even after the needle is in my skin, I have a fear that I may die at any second if I don't get air into my lungs. So I am desperately trying to gasp for air, than I get told to breath slower because I will faint if I don't. It's the worst experience to have panic attacks. I honestly would rather be knocked out at such times rather than to have to go though it (I am not saying that being unconscious is good, but I would rather not notice anything than to face my fear). But I go through it becouse I know that it is for my own good, and my own morals don't let me escape from a possibly very needed help in my future. So I make these problems for my self in a way😓.
    What I can recommend if you know that you will have a needle in your body for a longer period of time is, what we did at my wisdom teeth removal. So the first time we had to reschedule the operation because it was impossible for me to breath even though the needle was not yet even in my arm. So we talked with the anesthesiologist before the operation. And asked them for some type of medicine that will calm you down before the injection of the needle, but will not affect the anesthesia in any bad way. I got a pill that second time, which I was not allowed to chew or swallow for half an hour. It did not help with the fear, I still cried, but I was a lot calmer and I didn't have too big problems with breathing. What I learned first hand from that, was to tell your doctor even if he does not take your fear seriously, that you have a serious problem with needles, and you need help and support! (I hate that man till this very day because he just brushed of my phobia as a simple fear and he just didn't give a crap about it untill he saw me in a critical state, it wasn't deathly I know, but my mental state was a chaos, so to me it was critical.) So always make it clear to the doctor, that it is not just a small fear but a phobia. Because if you don't and just roll with what ever they say, it will be you who will have a bad memory at the end, and they will act as if you didn't tell them about it. I'm not saying every doctor is like that, and I am thankful for the help from them when ever I need it. But there are some people who are generally ignorant and you have to state the facts of phobia and not just simple fear, as clearly as possible cause they will ignore your problem as something insignificant.
    Also why do people ask why we have Tryphanophobia? I mean usually you will not ask someone why they have other phobias, because you want to be considerate. But seriously what do they expact to hear except for: I don't know, I alway had it. I will most likely not say something like, someone did something bad to me? Like,normally (-thankfully) that is not the case to most people with phobias. I mean yes there are some cases where something specific did happen. But if it is the case why do others expect you to talk about the reason? (I may seem angry/annoyed right now, but I just don't get it why they do it so often, it is asked every time the topic comes up. I do not belive that anybody would want to talk about the reason of it.) I do also not mean to offend anybody I am just asking why this is.
