Okay, this requires a bit of context. This is the sprint race of 2006 Turkish GP2 weekend, the penultimate round of the season. Nelson Piquet Jr, Lewis's main championship rival had taken both wins in last race and win in the Turkish feature race, and had the momentum with him, taking fastest lap by half a second. So for the sprint race, Lewis asked his mechanics to trim all the wings off the car in order to get straight-line speed at cost of downforce, basically going full Monza spec. They thought he was crazy, without downforce he'd lose the corners and send the car into the spin. And that's how the spin occurred as seen in the vid. However, in spinning so early, Hamilton had learned where the limit of adhesion lay and it was a mark he would not overstep again. He took full advantage of his straight-line advantage and held it together on the corners somehow, almost drifting through Turn 8. This race was an early indicator of Lewis's racecraft, but more importantly and perhaps way underrated, his intelligence and confidence to adapt his driving to suit the setup. This man is right up in Senna and Schumacher's range. And rightfully so. It takes a great car to dominate, but a great driver too. For all criticisms LH44 gets, you can't deny this man is one of the GOATs.

"Hamilton is good just because of the car" when from the beginning he proved to be very good. Also, he hasn't always had the best car. When Leclerc or Max in a few years are in the best cars they will say the same nonsense: "They only win for the car" If someone is with a competitive car it is because the driver is too.
95% it's literally just because of the car. You gotta remember of all racing drivers there are just 20 in f1. The differences are very small between them. You gotta reach 100% of your potential speed in every race which isn't easy at all, only just some drivers like hamilton, max, leclerc and vettel back when Ferrari was competitive were able to reach those 100% nearly every week. And at this level the differences are mostly just about 0.050 seconds. So it's very much about which driver gets the best car and the better of the two teammates wins the trophy.
Yeah? Webber at RB? Bottas at Merc? Gasly/Albon at RB? Not always the best driver get the best car. Also, Max are not champion at this point because Merc is THAT better. He's clearly going 100% of the car, while Lewis is cruising most of the time. Merc's car eliminates the competition for Lewis. Don't forget that Lewis only won 1 WDC with McLaren(Button got one as well), and the rest came from Merc's domination era, which he lost one WDC to Rosberg. Dude is very good, but he's not entitled to Merc's merit as well. I personally think Max has been in better form.

I'd say you can't really compare drivers from different eras. Because the cars are different. Put schumi hamilton and senna in the 50s with fangio. Fangio would have easily beaten them. Same goes for the other periods. But they are all the best drivers of their era.
That wasn't a mistake. This is the race where he asked his engineers to put the car in minimal down force mode for the race. They told him he would spin out trying to use that spec on this track. That spin at the beginning was Lewis finding the limit of adhesion.

I don’t like the guy but he has a lot of talent, I do think max is the better driver at the moment tho
Ooooh snap.
Well his car was a 12 cylinder n the others were only 4 cylinders n he cheated using jet fuel so it doesn't count 😂
@@kickschippers4934 I think your missing the point. This is Formula 1. Enjoy seeing the filthy rich attack each other in court/media and enjoy the wheel to wheel racing. 2022 is the real focus. Relocation of assets.
and people still think that he's the goat because of his car
I notice the agressivity of the drivers pushing Lewis almost to the wall
Diddums. Like little baby Lewis would never do that.
Shows they were not pushovers Fighting hard
i watched this race at the circuit. simply can't believe that performance back then. brilliant.
Lewis Hamilton is a natural with undeniable skills.
One of the best GP2 drives if not the best GP2 drive ever. One of Lewis Hamilton greatest drives and showcase of his immense talent.
Watching this live in 07 I would never have thought his future was going to be SO good. GOAT for me.
So it's very much about which driver gets the best car and the better of the two teammates wins the trophy.
exactly same thing happened Vettel at RB
@@lukewood2662 lol your point its dumb... And I'm not even a ham fan.. From 2009-2013 mclaren was nowhere good as redbull and by the way button won with brawn gp which was basically a mercedes. Hamilton on his best form can beat verstappen every day.... Lol
@@mr7mr799 look at bottas
“It’s the car” Also Lewis Hamilton in a spec series:
Lewis is an mazing racer.. wish we could see him mid pack more.
Hamilton is the best driver ever in F1 no doubt about that.
I'd say you can't really compare drivers from different eras. Because the cars are different. Put schumi hamilton and senna in the 50s with fangio. Fangio would have easily beaten them. Same goes for the other periods. But they are all the best drivers of their era.
Consistent late braking was a skill even back then.
Amazing race man especially the last battle
I'm a simple man I see Lewis hamilton I click.
i am here after interlagos sprint race
He made a mistake, refocused got in the zone and just was so much faster than everyone else. I'm a fan boy but yeah that was just pure racing.
That wasn't a mistake. This is the race where he asked his engineers to put the car in minimal down force mode for the race. They told him he would spin out trying to use that spec on this track. That spin at the beginning was Lewis finding the limit of adhesion.
D Manaigo It was a mistake spinning the car is a mistake period

That was Epic race on ESPN at first I thought he was from Trinidad David Hobbs said his family was from Trinidad so I start watching . But turned out Father from Grenada even better.
As once the great Schumacher said this guy will become a multiple world champion

Everyone: we race as one
Mercedes: we are number one

Is that Glock?!
Is that Glock going slowly?
Oh my goodness!
That was one of the best races from LH that I can remember
He was a true legend from there on
Love the Gran Turismo sound during every pass.
P19 to P2 in F2
P14 to P1 in F1
WHAT A LEGEND
Incredible performance from him! I can't believe he made up that many places to get onto the podium!
Champion Style🤘
And the next year he was second in driver's standing in F1
Hands down... This man is the greatest
He was obviously in a superior car. Max would have lapped everyone. Twice lol*
*I am being sarcastic.
''I love your sense of humour'' - Fernando Alonso
ROB112 yes. And obviously McLaren forced the FIA to let him use F1 aero packages and brakes. Patently obvious. Much more plausible than him having talent. Obvs
People still talk he just lucky but forget to watch race In 2006
This video makes me respect Lewis a bit more
mad, i just rewatched this race last night
Where If I may ask, please?
I hoped that there would be more of these 5 hours ago
Todays my lucky day

Hamilton: dosent get a penalty
Vettel Canada 2019 : NANNI????
Gp2 2006 🤨 wth are u even talkin about ?
He never left the track genius. But the Canada incident was indeed stupid.
You are still in your mode. THE HATE MODE! keep hating while Lewis keep winning! Lewis is the greatest and the cleanest driver of all time given statistical input. It's understandable to feel sad being beaten week - in, week - out by a guy who sees driving an hobby.
Not only that. Overtaking under yellow in the last corner!
@@tommy4862 Canada wasn't stupid... Hamilton clearly hit the brakes and the rules are clear...
Ferrari fanboys were stupid that day...
Shhhh you're going to scare the haters that claim that the car's everything.
The car isn't everything but a very big part. Just ask F2 champion George Russell.
I am no expert but, to me, in this video his car looks faster and gruntier than everyone else's car.
@@andrewfarrow4699 For GP2 series, all drivers used same chasis, engine, and tyre supplier.
@@Damian-tk9zg But the setups were different and some engineers are better than others.
Lewis is a goat. He has won in every category. Those that say it’s the car.... ummmm who goes to formula 1 to try and win in a shit car ?? U want the best car knowing u got self talent to win the title.
As Marc (Elvis) Pristley said: At one moment we all stopped working in the box (of Mclaren) and start watching this guy charge trough the field.”
Lewis the Legendary
Lewis is one of the best drivers to do it, the titles , the accolades, he's backed them up year after year.
I'm here before all the "Lewis Fanpage" comments
Lewis over the bully Schumacher any day, every day.
I agree with the music is not needed comments.
The music is there to try and mask the fact that the 2006 GP2 cars sound 10 times better than today's F1 cars.

Lewis Hamilton is greatest driver of this generation and arguably the greatest driver of all time. True legend.
Wrong, he is the greatest hypocrite in the fastest car.
@@jacquesduplessis8944 He is living rent free in your head. Don't hate, appreciate!
O patrão já estava destinado a ser o maior do esporte. GOALTmilton 🐐🐐
There’s a reason he went straight to McLaren. There’s a reason he matched and often got the better of peak Alonso. There’s a reason Lauda wanted him at Mercedes. There’s a reason Mercedes keep him as their driver. There’s a reason any talk about the best F1 drivers of all time will have to include his name in the hat.
It’s nice to see the official channel giving some history on this driver to the new generation of Dutch and America audiences that have only seen the Mercedes domination. Something he too has played a role in.
He said he never gives up a true display of a sportsman
Back to the times where GP2 was exciting!
Thank you for this memories
Imagine this was lewis in gp2 in turkey. Now hes in merc with 6 titles going to Turkey. A 30+ sec victory is coming. Pure bloodbath 😂
Those cars can go around 200 MPH so 19th to 2nd place is phenomenal at 20 years old! No surprise at all.
Extraordinary Hamilton is a great driver
And he did it with a GP2 engine. Amazing.
