  • Gatchaman Anime Review. Gatchaman, Gatchaman 2 & Gatchaman Fighter are Tatsunoko's iconic bird themed superhero anime that would influence numerous Tokusatsu & Super Sentai/Power Rangers. These three shows have been released in English under many names including Battle Of The Planets, G Force & Eagle Riders. The english dub featured in this video is the 2005 ADV Films dub which is the most accurate to the Japanese version. Sentai Filmworks currently has released the original uncut Japanese versions as part of Tatsunoko's 55th anniversary. Please support the official release. Bird Go!!

    The 1972 original series is truly the most influential animation cartoon ever. There is NO cartoon from mid 70’s to the late 80’s that didn’t take from Gatchaman. Voltron/Transformers etc. Still watchable to this day. Complete original series is on ITunes

    Not widely known but much of the art done for Gatchaman was done by Yoshitaka Amano, the same guy who went on to do much of the stylized art for the early ff games.

    What made Gatchaman and other Tatsunoko shows work so well was that their designs were heavily influenced by American comic books but still a Japanese atheistic to them, which is why their 70s designs are my personal favourite Anime character designs along with Miyazaki Studio Ghibli designs.
    Also if Mazinger Z could be considered a superhero anime then UFO Robo Grendizer fits the bill nicely since Duke Fleed the main character has a secret identity

    Thank you, for every word of praise. I grew up watching G-Force and Battle of the Planets and its still classified as one of the goriest things I had ever seen as a child, and that included a lot of late 80's early 90's blood horrors. It made a mark on me I'd never forget and even watching the English Version, I was intelligent enough as a child to go "wait... something's horribly wrong?" My first 3 years of exposure (and life, Air Force) was of Taipei Taiwan and its television, when I came back to the states, I still remember the name Udi Techen Gong, yet no one state side has a clue however G-Force looked close enough even if Voltron would later wander along. My Asian initial exposure to their pop culture allowed me a culture shock moment when I saw the later mangled translations that they tried to entertain American kids in the 80's with animation clearly targeting adults, while we were suffering from Saturday morning Cartoon and sugar coated sugar coated marshmallow cereal rush. When I was 18 and got the Japanese versions, I was such a happy contented conspiracy theorist.

    Considering that Gatchaman came out 3 years prior to Super Sentai I'm willing to bet that Gatchaman was a key influence for that show, and considering how much this show has either directly, indirectly, or are just plain referenced to Gatchaman directly in some easter egg fashion I'm surprised that not many Anime people bring it up more often, I mean even Teen Titans has a reference as well as freakin Shadow Hearts Convenient, not to mention it's possible that Super Sentai would have been drastically different (or possibly not created at all) if it wasn't for this show

I later found out it was a butchered up re-dub of Gatchaman and watched some of those. Certainly better. This cartoon (anime) probably influenced everything that followed for decades. Anime such as Gungrave, Basilisk, Claymore, Black Lagoon, Samurai 7, Gankutsuou, Speed Grapher, & Gantz to name a few.

    Nice insightful commentary. I've been watching anime since the first American wave in the 1960s (Astro Boy, Gigantor, 8th Man, and Speed Racer), and watched Battle of the Planets when in originally aired in syndication (grimacing through all those Hanna-Barbera insert animation scenes with 7-Zark-7, ugh!). So yeah, I'm an oldtaku. It's good to know that some people of a younger generation out there still have good taste and can appreciate the foundations of the anime industry as we know it today.
    I'd recommend Cyborg 009 if you haven't yet watched it. It's very much like the anime equivalent of the X-Men. The heroes are all cyborg super-soldiers (instead of mutants), each with a special power, and each from different countries. They rebel and fight against the evil merchants-of-death organization that created them (so they're sort of like Weapon Xs), but it has very much the feel of X-Men (coincidentally created at almost the same time), in that they become a family who can only rely on each other. Gatchaman is still #1, though!

    • @THEAnimeHERO
      @THEAnimeHERO  5 років тому +1

      I have seen some Cyborg 009, mainly the entire 2001 anime which is now available on SD Blu-ray. I wish they would come back in 2d as lately all of their new material has been in 3d cgi which could be better. Their last animated appearance in Cyborg 009 VS Devilman had some really great redesigns. I seen a few episodes of the Battle of the Planets version & I understand what you mean with the inserted animation of playing pong & hanging out. Susan had a really sultry voice. BOTP really watered down a great show. Gatchaman was surprisingly very ahead of its time covering horrific casualties & superhero tension before stuff such as 90's animated series. It really did a lot for superheroes in general but often goes unnoticed.

    • @dennisroy6282
      @dennisroy6282 5 років тому

      @@THEAnimeHERO I know what you mean about the 3Dcgi -- it has this kind of "puppet-y" look to it. I guess we should probably get used to it though, as it seems like we'll probably be seeing more of this type of anime in the future. That said, I thought Cyborg 009: Call of Justice was really good, especially in how it was written. You do get used to the CGI the longer you watch it and it becomes less noticeable. The anime movie version was not so good -- the script there was pretty impenetrable, with tons of loose ends and unanswered questions. Overall Call of Justice is a pretty good modern redesign which still acknowledges the series' past.

    Great video! I grew up in the 1970s, so Battle of the Planets was my great TV love. There was something weird though, as I often wondered why an alien planet had airports and passenger jets and looked exactly like Earth, lol! I had no real clue about it being a Japanese series...i just knew I loved it. I still remember those debates with school buddies about Zoltar's long blond hair. Could he be a girl? That bothered me, lol!
    Fast forward many years to adulthood. I had forgotten about Battle of the Planets. When watching some other anime we rented, there was a commercial at the start for something called Gatchaman (the 1994 OVA). Of course I went out and rented it. It struck a memory and i realized that it was indeed Battle of the Planets. I was befuddled over the villain being androgynous, though. I went to the public library to use the internet and I began reading everything I could about Gatchaman. I explored epusode synopses, character bios, fan pages, anything I could find. Wow, what a world i had uncovered, complete with many episodes that never made it to Battle of the Planets, as well as two sequel series!
    The series was impossible to find. I got a bootleg of Gatchaman the Movie, but it was a seventh generation tape and near impossible to watch. I could listen, though! I got some bootlegs of the last four episodes of Gatchaman II and the first four of Gatchaman Fighter. The quality was pretty good, but those subtitles were not the best and flashed on and off the screen too quickly. I wanted to obtain someJapanese laserdiscs since I had a LD player, but they were too pricey.
    Eventually, I found the entire first series in three DVD sets from China. These were made from the Japanese laserdiscs, so the quality was great. They were nicely packaged too with great box art. The subtitles, though, were very inconsistent and laughable. Oh well, what can you expect from Chinese people translating Japanese to English!!!!!! They were good enough for me to follow the stories.
    I was very excited when ADV released the series with a new English Dub, with the option for Japanese audio with subtitles. The new cast did an amazing job, and the translation was extremely close to the original. Usually American dubbing sucks, but here they went out of the way to preserve the original vision, though that did not stop them from inserting a little in joke here or there!!! Of course I got the whole set, the original releases in individual volumes. I remember having to wait for each batch of volumes to get released! I really wish that they all could have done G2 and GF as well.
    Gatchaman II and Gatchaman Fighter episodes are available on UA-cam, lovingly translated and subtitled by a great fan. If you can't afford the discs, that is a good alternative.

The Sentai release of the first Gatchaman series is the same from the ADV Films but with a picture quality. They even kept the bonus features. I was very impressed of the writing from a 1970's superhero which predates the stuff America wanted to do with their superhero shows & weren't able to till 1992's Batman The Animated Series.

      Keyop in "Planets" was not human. I think he was artificially made & that was the reason why he has a birth defect. I believe it was an attempt to make the series more alien. I first discovered Battle of the planets in 1980 I was 11 years old. The show was put on the air at 7:00 in the morning on Sunday of all times no one ever got to see it I found it because I stayed up all night against my parents' wishes and found it Sunday morning. I would kill to see every episode of the gotcha Man series. My only version I've seen is Battle of the planets and that's all cut to hell! Again I would buy every episode of gotcha Man uncut if someone would tell me how!

    Currently working on Gatchaman II... and good lord is it a step down from the original in terms of animation and design quality.

    • @THEAnimeHERO
      @THEAnimeHERO  5 років тому +2

      From that point onward designs do change drastically. Most enemy weapons have a ufo-ish look. In Fighter it goes back to the iron beast mechas but they follow a more toyetic look. Their ship in 2 is very bird theme but it looks better than their Gatha Spartan in fighter which lacks creativity but the Gatcha fencer is cool. Part 2s storyline does get heavy with drama by its finale and has a lot of Joe moments.

    • @Kenshiro3rd
      @Kenshiro3rd 5 років тому +1

      THE AnimeHERO THE AnimeHERO I'm aware. It's just that... well the designs went from practical if a bit outlandish/futuristic to toyetic and downright silly. Also WTF thought making Ryu's weapon a damn booger was a good idea?! And I MUCH prefer Ken's birdrangs to the fricken frisby. That said it's the New God Phoenix's that is the most jarring... and it's not so much the design itself that is the issue, but rather the paint job. They took a good design and utterly RUINED painting it to look like a bird. The thing looks like a MASSIVE CHICKEN as a result. Had it kept the original's color scheme the thing would have looked incredible. Honesty a LOT of this show's mechanical designs feels like a bunch of random toys from other series sticker slap rebranded to be Gatchaman toys. And that's the problem with the designs... the feel like TOYS rather than serious vehicles and weapons. As a result they clash and feel completely out of place and at odds with the rest of the series and the admittedly stronger and more serious narrative. If not for the stronger narrative I probably would have dropped it. That said Fighter is the one I'm really looking forward to. As while still toyetic the designs definitely feel less like toys clashing with everything else else around them.
      PS RIP Berg Katse... yeah he was an evil bastard. But god was he a gloriously hammy and lovable one. Also I just loved his increasingly desperate and exasperated responses to to the incompetency of his men. Was fricken hilarious. Plus you really can't help but feel sorry for him at the end. Dude really did get screwed over in life.
      PPS what is with Leader X's obsession with Mutant Shemale Underlings? In 1 he combine twins into one. In 2 he mutated a little girl into one.

I think there was some Ninja Turtles during the red sky season. When I came home, I'd watch Fox Kids which had Batman, Beast Wars, & Spider-Man which I saw a lot of. Battle of the Planets was my friends and my fav cartoon at the time, followed by Star Blazers. I remember we all hated Keyop and 7-Zark-7 (Hey, it's the man who owns Mr Ed!) for some reason, but after watching some eps I downloaded, it's obvious that the latter was added as filler and used to convince the children that no one was ever killed by those giant monster attacks. I didn't realize this show was a remake, a la the Power Rangers, until much much later, though I learned Keyop's stupid speech impediment was filler for his long stream of obscenities. One of these days, I need to watch the original.

    I am 50 today; but in the 1970s as a child,,,and Canadian,,,I knew this as Battle of The Planets - and it was the best cartoon to watch,,,I would not move from the TV,,,I loved them being known as G-Force - it makes sense the name - G-Force - Gatchaman may be the original name; but makes me laugh,,,cause it sounds more like gotcha - so as a fan.......I like the G-Force style....however, that being said,,,,I am happy to listen to the history of all of this and rather not surprised it became a controversy as I would see from time to time, as I had a father with Satellite TV,,,would note the other titles and going; why are they changing the name? okay,,now it makes sense; but oddly, the 7-Zark-7 slip-ins were just fun - but I always liked the sensitivity of the show, to show it as kids getting the job done as any superhero show,,,this show, just had class.

Sentai Filmworks currently owns the series but they don't seem to have any streaming rights from what I can tell. Admittedly, I watched a few early eps on websites and saw the rest by buying the dvd sets. The 1st series has a blu ray release but its very pricey for 105 eps & lot of bonus features (actual commentaries, interviews & very hard to find stuff about the series). The blu ray also comes with 3 ep ova from the 90s. Gatchaman 2 & F are sold separately with sub only. There's also a recap movie version covering events of the 1st anime but it just recycles animation from the series.
