History of Casshern: Anime's Heartbreaking Robot Hero

  • In the 1960s, there were few anime companies on the market. One of the big ones to spawn was Tatsuo Yoshida's Tatsunoko Productions. A studio that went against the mold other anime studios were fitting into with realistic super heroes and intense fight scenes. One of my favorite of their heroes is the Robot Hero Casshern. A hero that's gone through many forms of reinvention. This video will go over all 4 of his major screen appearances, how the anime landscape impacted them, and the legacy of Casshern.

    Hey everyone, thanks for watching. This is quite a bit different from my usual video game related content so I was worried putting this out there, but I'm really happy with how it came out. Production wise it was a nightmare at every step of the way. Especially deciding what history related things were relevant enough and what wasn't. Either way, pulling through made me more satisfied!
    I'm still in a retro anime mood so feel free to reccomend any weird, obscure 70-90s anime y'all like! I have some other anime content I'd like to do that I'll balance with game stuff, but none should end up this long in the near future😅.

      @@xhamtaro Yeah sorry, that is something I should've done. It was in my mind when I uploaded and before release. Then I had to get a colonoscopy and forgot.
      I have now added the sources that I recall using. It's not MLA, APA, or any of those standards. Besides basic filmographies since that would take up more than my character limit.

      Some niche old anime that you may probably try:
      - Hades Project Zeorymer
      - Judo Boy
      - Yakitate Japan
      - SPT Layzner
      - Chargeman Ken (this one is more of something to point and laugh at)
      -Tekkaman Blade (you weirdly forgot to mention this, as it's also licensed by Saban in the 90s as Teknoman)

      @proxy_mushikrieger9741 actually never heard of zeorymer but that looks pretty cool. Judo Boy I watched a hefty chunk of while making this video, but I do have a few eps left to watch still.
      I did also mention Tekkaman very quickly during History part 2, but I didn't go in depth on it. It's probably something I'll watch soon though since I loved all the other 90s reboots. Even Speed Racer.

    The Ending of Casshern (2004), he took the souls and Luna to a new earth galaxies way, becoming the spark of life. This goes with them leaving hate, death and whatnot behind.
    I literally just rewatched the movie after 10 years, I'm now almost 40. I grew up only knowing the 90s OVA, I too didn't understand and just liked but not loved the 2004 film, but upon my most recent viewing, it's a beautiful message in a great movie (for its budget).

Reminded me a lot of the Megaman X/Zero series both in terms of design and theme. I haven't watched your analysis yet, but it's on my watch list. I'm eager to learn more about Casshern. Casshern Sins really left a big impression on me. I'm usually not a fan slow-paced series like this but I stuck with it for some reasons and boy, I'm so glad I did.
    Also, about Buraiking Boss, my speculation about his name is a play on words 'buriki' (tin) implying that he's the king of tin robot army which explained the design of those grunt robots, I have no information to back this up, though.

    • @NovaZoneTV
      @NovaZoneTV  Рік тому +5

      That's an interesting read for his name. I'm not sure it quite fits because of how they pronounce the "A" and the glass breaking motif with Casshan, but I'd certainly accept that over the "Black King" thing the OVA did. It's also kinda funny to see big bad Braiking Boss and think "Tin Man"

    I would have never guessed that the episodic format where Casshern runs into people who imparts on him some sort of lesson about life or Casshern's crippling self-loathing that were at the heart of Casshern Sins all started all the way back in the original series. Sins is certainly darker, but it's shocking how the core of the show is very much consistent with the original incarnation of the brand in spite of the huge time gap. I kind of just assumed that Sins were "Casshern but philosphical and existential", but the original kind of already were those things within the limitations of its time.

    While i agree that there was tons of christan symbolism in casshern (tatsuo was christian and also made a christian anime called super book) it should also be noted that tons of japanese shows both animated and live action had people getting crucified, and it was usually just because the villain needed to hold someone captive or show the hero that they have a hostage or something. Mazinger Z has tons of moments like that because Dr Hell uses it a ton and super sentai also uses this trope. I'm pretty sure crucifixion is not seen as that big a deal in Asia, plus Japan used to crucify dead marines that had christian stuff on them as a psychological warefare tactic, so I think people in japan are just decensitised to it rather than here in the west were it is seen as sacred. I might be wrong, but I think its interesting.

    • @NovaZoneTV
      @NovaZoneTV  11 місяців тому

      I think the main difference is that Christianity isn't very common in Japan, so it's more 'exotic' to them. Similar to how Americans, where Christianity is the mainstream, view Shinto, Hinduism, etc. as 'exotic'. And so when making media, they don't feel quite as scared to tackle some of it. In America, you're at risking of making a "political statement" when you put too much Christian stuff in your work. When sometimes, you wanna just put it in because it's cool looking. I myself am not Christian, but I find Angels, crosses, and some other traditionally Roman Catholic stuff pretty cool looking. So I think it's similar to that in most instances.
      Also, Superbook was well after Tatsuo Yoshida's passing so he had nothing to do with the work himself. I've never read anything implying Tatsuo's religion? Do you have a source on that?

    • @benjaminbaker3446
      @benjaminbaker3446 11 місяців тому +1

      @@NovaZoneTV I might have misremembered mercuryfalcon saying tatsuo was christian in his tatsunoko video, so if I'm wrong about his religion then sorry my bad. You are definitely right about how they think christian symbolism looks cool though, I think the most infamous example would probably be Eva, since anno got asked whether or not there was any meaning behind the christian stuff and he said it was just for aesthetics. Btw excellent video, it reminds me of cheeseman's getter robo retrospective.

    Great video! I also think it's interesting to note how the 5th Saint Seiya movie and the consequences of it might have had a hand in how Sins turned out.
    Saint Seiya's last arc wasn't adapted in the original anime, so it came back in 2002 with Hades Chapter: Sanctuary, depicting the first third of the story. 2 years later, a sequel movie to the entirety of the Hades arc came out, called Saint Seiya: Heaven Chapter Overture, and unfortunately seems to have been a failure in the box office. Both were directed Shigeyasu Yamauchi, and due to the movie failing, Yamauchi was blacklisted from Saint Seiya, the sequel movies got cancelled, and the rest of the Hades adaptation was directed by Tomoharu Katsumata instead.
    The 5th movie has an interesting point, that the main characters have committed grave sins in the eyes of gods and need to be punished for it, and the end of the movie has all of the characters getting their memories erased. The mood of the movie is also pretty slow burn, and the aesthetic is pretty similar.

    Man I remember Casshern Sins. It was during my adolescent obsession with anime, but became bored from the slow opening, and ended up dismissing it as an edgy reboot for the sake of being edgy like Madoka Magica, not that either anime are edgy for the sake of being edgy (like many anime Madoka inspired), but I still dismissed them as that. 1:55:47 Contradiction as part of the human condition is another really interesting theme in Casshern Sins, which is beautifully mirrored in the lyrics of the second ED, Hikari to Kage, so I think it has deeper roots in the anime than it would seem coming explicitly from a one-time side character. We are filled with so many desires and drives for things we don't want, that hurt us, that create conflict; we often want to be what we are not. And we see it bear out in most of the characters. The normal robots are made human, for all intents and purposes, by the ruin. Luna's epithet is The Sun Named Moon; the source of eternal life who once granted salvation from it in death. Lyuze wants to forgive and love Casshern, but also to hate him for his sins. Dio, Leda, Casshern, and Ringo all have this dual identity half way between human and robot. Casshern wants to be at peace with the world but he was the catalyst for its apocalypse; he is an immortal who wishes to die; _and_ he longs for a purpose but is driven by an overriding instinct to survive. Casshern is constantly at war with himself and is the most human character of the whole cast, despite being arguably the furthest from humanity at the start of the series. And in the end, he becomes the very concept of Death itself.
    Thank you for this analysis, it pulled so many old emotions back out of me again.

    I had watched sins as it was airing on toonami and I swear it aided in my edgelord phase subconsciously. But around a year or two ago I decided to watch the ova and og. I never finished the og cartoon really out of laziness but the episodes I watched immediately kinda tapped into what I new of sins. I think a comparable case was me watching the original KR Amazon before watching Amazons and seeing what elements they used to rewrite a new take

    I never realized how much the first Casshern chara design ressemble the style of go nagai anime adaptation. Testuya ressemble a mix between Getter's Nagare Ryoma and Grendizer's Duke Fleed, did some Tatsunoko's people work for studio Dynamic later or vice versa?

    I wish Sins was actually a continuation of the original show. I watched Casshan in order of release. Imagine Casshan losing at the end of original. Or rather - final confrontation never comes. Robots slowly take over the world. Become immortal. New Luna was created in the lieu of the old one. Casshan slowly loses sanity and then we arrive at beginning of Sins.

On the other hand, she was the main writer on the god-awful Kamen Rider Amazons. And then there's shows like GARO: Zero Black Blood where I don't even know how to feel about it.

    The common anime theme of consuming something or someone to gain their essence is really interesting to me. I saw this first in Evangelion with Unit 01 eating an angel to... also gain its "immortality," its ability to function indefinitely without a power source and regenerate from damage all on its own. It makes me curious why this is such a pervasive theme in Japanese media, specifically. I wonder if it had its origins in older Japanese folklore, or if it's just a theme that appeared in an influential early anime and became immortalized (heh) within the genre.

    • @NovaZoneTV
      @NovaZoneTV  19 днів тому +1

      Given the two examples here, Evangelion & Casshern, I kinda wonder if it comes from more of a Christian influence than Japanese or other Asian folklore? Maybe it's a strange reinterpretation of eating the body of Christ?

    • @Krikenemp18
      @Krikenemp18 19 днів тому

      @@NovaZoneTV Definitely possible, although that would make me wonder if and/or why we don't see this theme as much in media from regions that are much more immersed in Christian culture and ideology. Maybe it's the product of a unique melding of Japanese and Christian thought? Although at the same time, I feel like Japan has other sources for messiah and especially self-sacrifice themes, notably samurai honor, that may better explain a lot of the apparent Christian themes (I'm under the impression that it was never a very big influence over there outside of the visual imagery in some outstanding cases). Man, this kinda makes me want to dig into Japanese media history and iconography more broadly. Elden Ring lore has had me finding out a lot of interesting things on that front lately (a game which _also_ has a lot of themes around literally or symbolically consuming others!)
