I know it's been commented about "Going to California" is Robert Plants love letter to the beautiful goddess, "Joni Mitchell" a little story about Joni's reaction to Taylor Swift wanting to do a movie as her playing Joni. Joni said and I'm paraphrasing, " Yeah, I can see it, the high cheek bones, beautiful, yada yada yada, it's a shame she can't sing"
    I love Joni
    I love Led Zeppelin.

From “The Independent (2/11/15)” here’s what Joni Mitchell actually said about Taylor Swift playing her in a biopic:
Mitchell admitted to stalling the project last November when she claimed to have “squelched” plans, but when asked again recently about being played by Swift, she still had more to say.
“I’ve never heard Taylor’s music,” Mitchell said, according to New York Magazine. “I’ve seen her. Physically, she looks similarly small-hipped and high cheekbones. I can see why cast her.
“I don’t know what her music sounds like, but I do know this - that if she’s going to sing and play me, good luck.”

I saw Plant and Page in concert in 1997 (Albany NY, Walking Into Clarksdale album tour). The first 3 songs they did, were from their new album. Robert exclaimed, "By contract with our record label, we must play at least 3 of the new songs,..........let's get them out of the way so we can really have some fun'..." After the 3 songs (not bad) the ripped into 150 minutes of straight on Led Zeppelin. It will always be the best show I will ever see. I am not religious in any way, but I did feel as though I was in the presence of gods that day.

"Going To California" is one of those ethereal introspective acoustic numbers that's best experienced when you're riding on a Greyhound bus in the middle of a rainy afternoon. The mandolin sounds always seems to mimic the sight of rain rolling down the windows and vice versa... The inflection in Robert's voice when he sings the line "spent my days with a woman unkind" never fails to give me chills...

I would not swap my 60's and 70's days of youth for anything this generation can offer, and Led Zeppelin were a HUGE part of that incredible time. He sang with a soul, spiritual, improvisational, even hormonal connection. He loves to take creative chances (to him, they're not risky, they're an adventure). The part that gets me is how smooth/seamless/effortless the transition is into head-voice. I think he's a Tenor. I can only sing his stuff in falsetto and it sound thin. My head-voice doesn't sound so smooth - it's grating. He just swings on his range as if it's a vine. His relationship with the mic is almost like he's making love to it.

Robert Plant has the greatest vocals, his beautiful range tone & texture, he knows exactly how to use it for every song. Many of their songs are his lyrics, & they do so many different genres. His Blues vocals are absolutely amazing, yet he can sing beautiful ballads too. I’m not sure what other song you listened to, but he’s the one many wish they could sound like, & can’t achieve. He can change his range in a split second, & not miss a beat. He could sing the phone book, & make it sound like the most beautiful thing you’ve ever heard. In lives he often improvs, & no song sounds the same in any concert. I suggest you check out more, try at Madison Square Garden (1973) Since I’ve Been Loving You, beautiful blues. Try from Knebworth (1979) Kashmir, or from Earls Court (1975) In My Time Of Dying. Really any song, because they are all so different. Kashmir will really take you on a journey, Plant wrote the lyrics about his & Page’s journey through the desert, on their way to Morocco. It’s the song the band is most proud of. Thanks for your reaction, & more Led Zeppelin.

Great reaction and so much more Zeppelin to enjoy, please do. For a start try the musical journey "Kashmir" off the 1975 album Physical Graffiti and then follow up with the live version from the O2 Arena in 2007 with Bonham's son on drums.

That smaller looking guitar is a mandolin. It's tuned different and it's a 8 stringed instrument, but the strings are doubled up like the high end of a 12 string guitar. They aren't octaves like the lower strings of a 12 string guitar. This was played by John Paul Jones who was often on bass guitar for the band, though he is a multi-instrumentalist.
Also, if you are looking to play this on guitar, it's actually in double drop D tuning where both of the e strings are tuned down a full step.
I tried my hand at playing it many years ago and when tuning up the high e string back to standard e, it snapped and went through my finger. Thankfully I was playing 9s on my electric back then so it didn't bleed much, but it did itch and then bruise after a while.

This is my favourite Led Zeppelin song, where John Bonham has gone backstage for a well earned smoke. And the music is all acoustic.

I love the way you laugh at your own jokes, which are, quite fittingly, FUNNY! You SO give me such a Kennedy vibe! I mean the former VJ from MTV, now a FOX News commentator. SHE slays me with her cuteness, wit, and fun, and YOU have all those AND the British accent! Mercy! In any case, I trust it won't be another five years till your next Zeppelin reaction. YT's algo's did their job and alerted me you were doing my fave group again here, and I'm so glad I rediscovered your magnificent channel. Cheers!

@@rva Thanks for the nice replies! And no worries--there'll be no quiz, I'll never mention her again, but here is a 2 minute sample of the as - I - see - it Kennedy/Yourself enthralling personality similarity, in the form of her dishing on her almost-tryst with Michael Jordan, lol. I have no problem with her politics, and have no idea of yours, but wanted to use something non-political so as not to potentially sour your experience. I find her Life-affirming in that "Take the Risk/Or lose the Chance" way I saw on a wall plaque in one of your vids. And topping it off, you both rock such the cool glasses! AND you inspired me with your tumor story! I mean: just put a fckn fork in me already! 🤣 OK, I'm STFU now! If you do make time for Couple Minutes Kennedy here, I hope you enjoy it. Cheers! ua-cam.com/video/d-E9MuGQPDo/v-deo.html

You really need to do Kashmir live from celebration day. It’s mind blowing at their age and how great they still r. And the late John’s son on drumbs .

The "girl out there with love in her eyes and flowers in her hair" and the "queen without a king who plays his guitar and cries and sings" is Joni Mitchell!
Also, Led Zeppelin are a band that sounds, ancient, modern and futuristic all at the same time.

'shower of teardrops in my ear'. You would find that quite unpleasant, actually. LOL Great reaction to a powerful example of the Mighty Zep's folk side. BTW, I like the natural rasp in your voice.
