This song from the 4th album (untitled) was part of a 3-song acoustic set they performed for many years. It followed Bonhams long drum solo (Moby Dick) to give him a rest, and to slow it down and show off the band's diversity! The "Queen without a King" in the song, is the great Joni Mitchell who both Robert and Jimmy crushed on when they wrote this in 71. Joni once said of them, they were the only major act who admitted to listening to and enjoying her music. The music industry was ultra macho during the time, and many male stars would never admit to this!
I never understood why they dropped the acoustic set for the 1973 tour. Would have been great at the filmed MSG concerts. They introduced the acoustic set in 1970 and played in 1971, 1972, 1975 and 1977 but strangely not in 1973.
I don't know why Joni would say this. She was fanboyed by Crosby and Stills and eventually Young and Nash. They got Clapton high and sat him in front of her and watched him zoneout on her greatness, they even got a picture of it. Bob Dylan called her the greatest songwriter of their era. Prince was a devoted fan, citing her as a major influence. He even covered her song "A Case of You" and mentioned her artistry as inspirational. As a collaborator and close friend, James Taylor frequently praised Mitchell’s talent and their musical synergy. Elvis Costello expressed deep admiration for Joni Mitchell’s ability to transcend genres and create timeless music. Herbie Hancock, a jazz musician, admired Joni Mitchell so much that he created an entire album, "River: The Joni Letters", in tribute to her work. The album won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2008. Joni said this in a 2005 interview with "Far Out" Magazine but it belies reality. I think Joni was just wearing her "feminist" hat that day commenting on the industry as a whole but using herself as an example was a bit gratuitous.
Both Robert&Jimmy have stated that this song is largely an ode to JoniMitchell -- who famously lived in LauralCyn, CA -- with a node to her Blue album's song "California." ☯
The great thing about the album version, is that it goes from that mellow, acoustic-y ending, into "Boom!... Bash!... Boom!... Bash!". When the Levee Breaks next! 🤙😎
Robert Plant has toured for several years with Country-Blue Grass 27 Grammy award winner Allison Kraus. I saw them a year ago and it was brilliant. The king of Rock and Roll collides with the Queen of Blue Grass.
You should look into Robert's changing voice. The early years, then after surgery in '73 and then 77 and 79 after he adapted to his "new voice". 1975 was a tough year, he had the flu in the early part of the tour. Also Jimmy got his left hand smashed in a train door.
I feel that his voice around 79 and in the early to mid 1980s or more, kinda of returned to his early sound before he made it with Zeppelin. When he was younger and recorded in 1967, Robert Plant - Our Song ...He had a Tom Jones type of sound as well at that time. Nice chest quality.
I love this song. I think it showcases another level of talent and how well they put music together even if it’s softer music. I always love your reactions
There are at least two other live acoustical Zeppelin songs you will without a doubt love are "Led Zeppelin - Bron-Y-Aur Stomp (Live at Earls Court 1975)" which is a tribute to Roberts dog at the time, and Led Zeppelin - That's The Way [Live at Earls Court 1975] (Official Video)
OMG soooo **Beautiful** They are THE **Best Band EVER!!!* to me anyway & IF ya have not listening/watched their performance of **In My Time Of Dying** Live at **Earls Court 1975** I do **Hope** you will consider it! Thank YOU very MUCH **Luvd** your reaction to THIS!
Led Zeppelin is one of if not most fames bands of all time, all four members are master musicians. Singer Robert Plant uses his vocals like an amazing instrument, he has an amazing range tone & textures, with those & his soulful passion he’s the greatest Rock Blues Funk Folk singer ever. They wrote & preformed to perfection many genres of music, I highly recommend checking out more of their music, you won’t be disappointed. Thank you for your reaction.
Just about my favorite Zep song. Inspired by both earthquakes and Joni Mitchell (referencing her song “ I had a King” from her first album (68) which preceded Led Zeppelin’s by a few years (71). I was in my first term in college; I had just turned 17.
In 1989 went off to college in LA. I was in NJ for my senior year. I must have listened to this song 100,000 times that year! Then she came back and we broke up! 😂, 😎
The girl in California was Joni Mitchell, who was living in Laurel Canyon, a musicians' enclave outside the city. All the guys were in love with her and she loved a fair few of them in return.
Yeah I don't see Robert as a trained "academic" singer. For him, it's all about the feel, the story, the expression, all of which takes you places, vibrates your bone marrow. And he can change up for whatever style of music is called for. He emotes and expresses and feels. Which is why he's my favorite singer. He's a magician, a shaman, on stage. And he's a big part of the band, as a whole, taking the listener on that journey. Interesting with the consonants and such, I notice he tends to also do more of a spoken, staccato type style frequently, which makes the enunciation clearer as well.
The Mandolin player John Paul Jones really got shafted by Barely showing him playing the Mandolin and in general. Even though his piano/bass playing was integral. 😊
JPJ liked not being in the spotlight, he had more freedom in public, he was able while touring to sightsee in the different cities & countries. Plant often told him to be out front more on stage, but John didn’t want to be.
HI MAGGIE! 😊SO THIS SONG WAS INSPIRED BY ( JONI MITCHELL ) AND HER HIT FROM HER 71 EPIC ALBUM ( BLUE ) : CALIFORNIA 👍ROBERT EVEN REFERENCES HER IN THE SONG MULTIPLE TIMES MAGGIE 💯IF YOU FALL INTO JONI A FEW GREATS : A CASE OF YOU, HELP ME, FREE MAN IN PARIS AND JONI ALSO WROTE THE SONG ( WOODSTOCK ) THAT DOZENS OF BANDS PLAY AND SHE GETS THE ROYALTIES FROM THAT MASTER GEM, ANYWAY, THERE YA GO GIRL!
Didn't take care of his voice the first handful of years, and after 1973 was a different singer. Got raspier, and lost the high-end register completely. Too bad. But he adapted and was more careful post 1973 years. This is a 1975 live version of a 1971 song. Check the studio version to note the differences, they are quite stark in my opinion. Interesting analysis of a classic song from their repertoire. Cheers 🍺
Also if ya dig and enjoyed this video Going to California and totally a groovy song 😀 you may also enjoy the song " Most of All " By Glenn Kaiser and Where Roses Grow Live by Rez Band Awesome songs check them out. Also I remember hearing the song by Led Zepp " In My Time of Dyin " during my drug years and made me think about death and Jesus. Then a hippy friend that dug Jesus told me more of Jesus love and forgiveness and how I could also know Jesus love. So in 1981 I cried out to Jesus and wow man He came into my life and I had and have so much joy and peace and now know that through Jesus when I die I will be with Him in Heaven. Hey Jesus loves each of you also and yall can know Him if you are at all open. Just cry out to Him and a good question to ask yourself if you were to die today would you go to heaven ? And if yes why ? To find out more please read the Gospel of John in the Bible or check out the movie on UA-cam. 😀
The studio version is so much better. When you start talking about vocal chords and nasal stuff, it sounds like the other lady I talk to The Charismatic Voice. Perhaps you know her?
And here's the rub Maggie...you are actually listening to the HARDEST ROCK group of all time bar none........I'm serious...and Bonzo is off stage have one for the road ....LOL

Amy Lee does a great version of this song

They were absolutely MAGNIFICENT! The acoustic set was fabulous!
Best voice and band to ever live in my opinion
“ Kashmir “. Live from Knebworth 1979! Oh yesss.
Yes!!!
Maggie, you win first prize for the number of interruptions during one song!
Saw them in LA in 77 and they did this song and Stairway on tall stools in the spotlight. Like this video
Both Robert&Jimmy have stated that this song is largely an ode to JoniMitchell -- who famously lived in LauralCyn, CA -- with a node to her Blue album's song "California." ☯
I like this song. It shows another type a music they can play Great reaction as always
The great thing about the album version, is that it goes from that mellow, acoustic-y ending, into "Boom!... Bash!... Boom!... Bash!".
When the Levee Breaks next! 🤙😎
With this way of commenting, what a nice and imaginative melody is completely lost.

Thanks!
Thank you so much for your support!! 💖 I APPRECIATE YOU!! 🙏🏻 Hope to see you on my livestream today: ua-cam.com/users/livef7u-VFveQ58

Beautiful + Haunting + Iconic = Led Zeppelin "No Quarter" (Studio Version First) 🔥❤️🔥
World class player's, and great vocals. I love this band!
I enjoyed your accompaniment, singing with the tune. Nice! 😊
His singing showcased best in Babe I'm Gonna Leave you studio version
Since I've Been Loving You for me. I think he himself says it was his best performance. Also, gentle songs like Tangerine and Thank You.
Kashmir, one of Zeps best. Thank you Maggie, Roscoe & Dorky.
The human mind has so many journeys within it, expression being the ultimate artwork.
I love this song. I think it showcases another level of talent and how well they put music together even if it’s softer music. I always love your reactions
Black Sabbath,Led Zeppelin,Deep Purple the holy triad of rock music🤘
You ever noticed how the best music came from the other side of the pond 🤣
Led Zeppelin, Beatles, Stones, The Who, Pink Floyd. These are the fabulous five.
It's about time, Gorgeous!
We need more of YOU and the Mighty LZ (please ❤🎉)
There are at least two other live acoustical Zeppelin songs you will without a doubt love are "Led Zeppelin - Bron-Y-Aur Stomp (Live at Earls Court 1975)" which is a tribute to Roberts dog at the time, and Led Zeppelin - That's The Way [Live at Earls Court 1975] (Official Video)
Might be my favorite song of theirs.
I would love to see your reaction to “Since I’ve Been Loving You” live at MSG ‘73. Great performance
This is a Story of Joni Mitchell! Back in 1968
OMG soooo **Beautiful** They are THE **Best Band EVER!!!* to me anyway & IF ya have not listening/watched their performance of **In My Time Of Dying** Live at **Earls Court 1975** I do **Hope** you will consider it! Thank YOU very MUCH **Luvd** your reaction to THIS!
This is simply beautiful
Epic spng from the best band 🎼🥇
❤😊 great reaction
I would love a reaction to The Rain Song...beautiful ballad by Led Zep!
Girl who plays guitar and sings - Joni Mitchell 🥸
Silly to critique musical perfection
Thank you for sharing a bit of your Juilliard education with us. Getting a little knowledge with a fine piece of music is not a bad thing. 😁
John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page are both Professional (Studio Musicians)
Maybe try "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" next, or "Kashmir - Live; Celebration Day"

❤❤❤Robert ❤❤❤
The counter point on the strings is John Paul Jones. It is what makes this song so good. Did not notice that unseen person is in control of this?
Great song. I particularly like the acoustic guitar work. Great reaction, Maggie.
Just about my favorite Zep song. Inspired by both earthquakes and Joni Mitchell (referencing her song “ I had a King” from her first album (68) which preceded Led Zeppelin’s by a few years (71). I was in my first term in college; I had just turned 17.
So beauty this song
Great reaction Maggie!
Is there any way you could post a version where you're not trying to mimic everything the singer does?
The Girl with Flowers in her her is Joanie Michele, I like when he says Man she sings..,
Joni Mitchell
In 1989 went off to college in LA. I was in NJ for my senior year. I must have listened to this song 100,000 times that year! Then she came back and we broke up! 😂, 😎
The girl in California was Joni Mitchell, who was living in Laurel Canyon, a musicians' enclave outside the city. All the guys were in love with her and she loved a fair few of them in return.
John Paul Jones must have bribed every cameraman to ever film this band, to not show him playing.
I saw them back in 1974, great concert from what I can remember through this old cloudy brain.
They didnt play in 1974
I've always been curious why Jimmy has a traditional pick taped to his thumb, rather than a thumb pick.
Since you like how Plant uses consonats o much, look at Rammstein, and Til Linderman, in German of course, and I am not from Germany,

Beautiful song.
I always liked the album version of this song better than live...
Great song! They have tons more songs to do!!
You should check out the cover Amy Lee does of this song it’s truly amazing.
If you like this group, you might want to them reborn in a band called Greta Van Fleet. I suggest "Safari Song", "Curtain Falls" and "Highway Tune."
Try Trampled Under Foot 💯🔥
amy lee from Evanescence does a dramatic deep epic version of this song.
Where's Bonzo at? Slamming 🍻 backstage 🤣
I love LZ, but I love Amy Lee's take on this. It suits her voice.
The Mandolin player John Paul Jones really got shafted by Barely showing him playing the Mandolin and in general. Even though his piano/bass playing was integral. 😊

One of my fav. ZEP tunes Sexy Cheese Muffin.
I've written a Led Zeppelin screenplay.
You should listen to the battle of evermore which robert plant did with sandy denny.
I'd love your analysis of "over the hill and far away". Evidently it did some damage to Plant's vocals idk//
Robert Plant, the only man on the planet that can glance at a woman and make her come
Reage a Teen Years Gone do Led Zeppelin

In that one, Frisé.
Robert Plant had vocal cord surgery the year before and his range was never the same after that.
Was inspired by Joni Mitchell

Great voice but the accompanying music is meh.
Robert is not always so careful to make his pronunciation clear
Stop interrupting
OMG I can't handle you!! I love listening to Robert Plant not you!
