Somebody probably already said this, but supposedly this song was inspired by Joni Mitchell. Love this song. In my opinion, this is quintessential Led Zeppelin. There is a mix of it without vocals that is amazing. I'll take Robert Plant on vocals any day. And yes, John Paul Jones was Zeppelin's secret weapon! Dude is an amazing musician!
Oh HELL Yes!!!! Going to California is a special Led Zeppelin song with its mellow melody, intricate guitar picking, and deep lyrics - it's just so sweet. Spot on with this choice you two. If you want to do another soft Zeppelin song check out the song Thank You.
How powerful was this song vocally and instrumental and without the drums ? - The band oozes talent . The Rain Song and Thank You are masterpieces and definitely need to be reacted to. Love you work guys.
I believe the Tolkien stuff goes over the heads of most young folks. I'd venture to guess that the only Tolkien the Rob Squad has been exposed to has been the tip of the iceberg "Lord Of The RIngs movies. But you can still get some of the references like Golum, Mordor, etc. But when you read the books as most young people did back in the day before Netflix and Cable TV you get a sense for Middle Earth, and Middle Earth is the setting for many Zeppelin Songs. Ring Wraiths and all. Databyter
@@Databyter Lord of the Rings is one of my favorite things ever. Watched them all many times. (never read the books, though). So I love how Led Zeppelin sings about it.
Yes Jordan, that's Jimmy Page on acoustic and John Paul Jones (bass player and pianists) playing the mandolin. Check out the live version at Earls Court sometime.
@@user-or1ye3iz6d The movies are cool. But I highly recommend the books. They are well written and not boring. They will grab you and you will enjoy them even if you're not much of a reader. I remember getting the trilogy and literally binge reading all three books over a long weekend, because I couldn't put them down. I only stopped to eat and nap. I was in my teens. Databyter
Robert Plant's voice is an instrument (more so than any other singer). The sounds he produces is excellent when he sings or just makes a pitched sound (such emotion). The best lead singer of all time to me.
For another version of Plant’s voice check out his duet album with Allison Krause, Raising Sand. Hard rock singer meets angelic voiced Bluegrass singer I recommend listening to “Killing the Blues”. It’s beautiful. Great album overall.

Zepplin always did an acoustic set in their concerts. They pulled up chairs on the side of the stage, set up like they were in a folk club rather than in front of 50,000 people
This is their softer side. More like this would include: The Rain Song, What Is And What Should Never Be, Friends, Tangerine, All of My Love, Tea For One, Down By The Seaside... so many. Also Robert Plant as a solo artist has lots of songs like this too. 29 Palms, Ship of Fools, you need to react to him on his own too like you did with Journey and Steve Perry.
Led Zeppelin tells epic stories. They have the most beautiful slow songs - this one gives me chills even after all these years. I wanted to be the girl with flowers in her hair 🎶 to be able to hear this, through you , again for the first time is a gift. Keep up the great work!! Love from Canada 🍁
Some of their acoustic stuff is really their best. Led Zeppelin 3 has a lot of acoustic songs that sound really good. The acoustic guitars on this particular song are Jimmy Page and the mandolin is John Paul Jones.
Yes, Katie! He played every other instrument that was needed other than the guitar, drums and harmonica. These are all the instruments JPJ played: Bass guitar, recorder, koto, lap steel guitar, autoharp, ukulele, clavinet, sitar, keyboards, keytar, mandolin, cello, background vocals
My husband and I just saw a Led Zeppelin tribute band last night which was AMAZING! The drummer was John Bonhams son Jason Bonham. So much respect! This song is one of my favorites! A true beauty from Led.
So would love to see Amber's reaction to Zeppelin's "Since I've Been Loving You". Jay reacted like in his first week of the channel but so would love for him to share it with Amber. Zeppelin blues.
65 years old, and I have loved Led Zeppelin for years, but still my FIRST time hearing this song! Yeah, just more proof of the talent these guys had. Amazing skills on display in a whole different style.
Amber why didn't you play the LIVE version from 1975 wooow your a huge 70s fan you would have really liked way more but it's yours and Jays choice i guess lol
Love Led Zeppelin. There is a Pearl Jam song that they’ve admitted was heavily influenced by this song…. It is called “Given To Fly”. It’s a great one too…. Give it a listen.
This album is a f’ing masterpiece.. one of the best albums of all time. This song, Stairway to Heaven, Black Dog, Battle of Evermore… it’s just amazing
My overall most favorite group. They dont make bad songs. Thanks for covering Going to California! and Yes Jimmy is playing the Acoustic guitar in this song.
Yes, Jimmy Page is on acoustic guitar, but it is John Paul Jones expertly playing mandolin that makes this song. My ABSOLUTE favorite Zeppelin song is Fool In The Rain.
My absolute favorite song by Zeppelin. Reminds me of when I lived in the Golden State. Shades of California Dreamin' by the Mamas and the Papa's. Thanks for your spot -on reviews
You need to hear Robert Plant and Alison Krauss.. they recorded and released their 2nd album together this past November. Absolutely magical.. You Can't go Wrong with Led Zeppelin!!!!
Another song that displays their softer side is "Thank You". I think you would both also enjoy "Bron-Y-Ur Stomp" live at Earl's Court for its departure from their Rock sound, but maintains their foot-stomping joy.
"girl out there with love in her eyes and flowers in her hair" and the "queen without a king who plays his guitar and cries and sings" is Joni Mitchell!
The 'Queen without a King' in the song was Joni Mitchell. This is one of a couple of songs about her I'm aware of. She really wowed the music industry in her heyday. Listen to Led Zep III if you want more of their acoustic work; 'Tangerine' is a stand out number on the album.
I remember how my mind was blown as a kid finding out this song was regarding Joni Mitchell, finding out at the same time I was discovering Joni myself. So now every time I hear the song “California” by Joni, I think of Led Zepplin
Over the hills and far away ...is by far one of my favorite Zepplin tunes ...you should give that a listen Amber ..? I'm certain you'll love that as much as this one...
A slow and beautiful song. Page on acoustic guitar and John Paul Jones on the mandolin Many, when they move out to California have this picture in their mind of everything being all wonderful, perfect, and beautiful. Omg. Such a pipe dream. Our daughter moved out there 7 years ago and worked her ass off and climbed the ladders big time. It’s taken a ton of hard work. She’s an Interior Designer for the most renowned Architectural and Design firm in the city. She’s currently the designer for a big-time famous guy. But, when she went out, she began super low on the Totem pole. And she really really struggled. So many people go out there with unrealistic expectations and dreams. Many spend every penny they own and end up homeless. And then stuck there miserable.
This is the ultimate '70's hippy song. Really shows the kind of range and creativity they have. Genius. "Thank You" by Led Zeppelin is a good addition to this. "If the sun refused to shine I would still be loving you Mountains crumble to the sea There will still be you and me"

Yes! Jimmy Page on acoustic 12 string and 6 string guitars and John Paul Jones played mandolin. Led Zeppelin lll is mostly acoustic with songs like "Tangerine", "Friends", "That's the Way", and "Gallows Pole".

Joni's home in Laurel Canyon (meet you up there where the path runs straight and high?), that she shared for a few years with Graham Nash, also inspired their colab "Our House".

Jimmy Page recorded two different guitar tracks on this song. He's tuned to drop-D, strumming a 12-string with an overdubbed track of a fingerpicked 6-string, also tuned to drop-D. The mandolin is played by John Paul Jones.
