The deep in the comics was a flat boring character to begin with because that was Ennis way of showing how little he cared about the aqua man character.
doesn't happen in the comics, but then again neither was the deep taken as a joke in there. They may try to go into a different direction, as in the comics the Weinstein moment involved all the males of The 7, and was left largely hanging. Given the current political climate, they may try to take an underused character, and finish that plot point in a more satisfying way in the show.

At second glance, the deep is one of the better characters. Every other member of the seven does stuff and gets away with it. The deep did a lot wrong, but he had to put up with consequences more then the others. Maybe with him feeling pushed out of the seven he will turn against them instead. (I don’t see that happening though as the new trailer looks as if he sets a load of sharks on the boys)

In some ways, The Deep was one of the most genuine characters on the show. His affection & humanization of oceanic creatures is pure, he legitimately has immense sympathy for animal suffrage. He has a multitude of character flaws & weaknesses beyond that, but his love towards the sea is selfless.

Someone pointed out that because his gills are so horrific, people are disgusted by him, making him insecure and self-loathing. But because sea animals have gills they understand him and dont judge.
