Honestly, I have created about 6 different types of VHS effect in AE and could never figure out how to make the "interlacing" displacement, and you just come in and whip out the most accurate thing I have ever seen. Nice video and thank you!

I paused as you went along and did the steps myself and that helped a TON.
I wish people would teach you how to make your own custom assets instead of constantly trying to sell you stuff :(
I have found that a very slight fish-eye lens effect to simulate the old bubbled CRT TVs can also help sell the effect.
Don't do that... then the whole video is ruined when displayed on real CRT TVs.

you should try to recreate the motion blur/resampling that happens on VHS tapes, too! loved the vid, super easy to follow
The one oversight here (if authenticity is the goal) is the footage is too high-res, most VHS footage will be PAL720x576 in the UK / NTSC640x480 in the US, the colour palette / chroma will be entirely different. You are basically getting modern footage and sticking a few VHS artefacts over it, sort of like putting a leather jacket on a business man and calling him a punk : )

I'm not sure if this is the place to do this but I purchased this vhs pack and now I can't run any of the files on my computer because I use windows. I'm really bummed out. I can't seem to convert the files either.

Does Facebook have problems showing videos with VHS overlays in HD? I finally got my 32s video to show up as 720p, but only after removing the overlays. I know UA-cam can go lowres crazy with patterns.

i hate these types of vhs videos, like its obviously trying way too hard to imitate the look, like you just put effects over it. No discoloration or anything to make it look like it came out of an actual vhs.
there's something about old vhs aesthetics that is fun and intriguing to watch, what you just described right there is what everyone hates about actual real vhs.
Or just buy a cheap vhs and a video grabber.
Making a vhs effect on a video editor gives you more control over tracking errors
