Massive thanks to madmomentsgo for providing that amazing music for my intro!

Not to be that guy, but if you use Motion Tile, you can change the phase to 180 to get every other column to shift. Great stuff man!l
Haha, where were you last week?! This is a great alternative
@@BenMarriott Recovering from vacation!
But "That guy" is the best guy! I love to lean better techniques by the comments!
Also, I think Repetile has a "Brick" layout too.
@@Zenzuke Yeah, I tested them out before commenting and brick only does it horizontally. So if you want them to offset vertically, you can't.
real shit bro this is going to come in handy more than you could ever know lol - you replicated this TOO well
My pleasure dude! Can't wait to see what how you use it
@@BenMarriott learned so many random little things in this video it's crazy
Yeah, toooooo well
*suspicion*
Yeah this is awesome and not just for CRT effects, but different color filtering methods. A CRT-like 2-strip film effect maybe?
scout glitch edit?
I'm such a sucker for the whole VHS/CRT aesthetic! Fantastic work Ben!
Not that its the topic of this video, but nice channel you have there, mate, just to say.
10:35 you dont necessarily need to scale it up to 101% using transform, an alternative option to fix the edges is to go in the wave warp setting called "pinning" then choose all edges
Good call, thanks.
100% the best version of this affect ive seen
Oh my, thank you so much
i tried to replicate CRT from the same video you watch, but you did this so much more efficiently!! thanks for sharing.
You don't know how long I've been wanting this one 🙌 absolute king
Yes! That's amazing to read :D Merry Christmas
So far the only tutorial I've seen that takes it slow and doesn't require prior experience to soft design.
Technology connections is one the best out there. I love his attention to detail. He has a love for product design that isn't packaged in a better way anywhere else on youtube
Can’t believe I have paid for a sub par CRT presets and this tutorial is a work of art - all from scratch. Perfect.
Nice work! I’ve done similar effect with OpenGL shaders in the past. Instead of doing the split RGB, you can also just set the CRT layer blend mode to Multiply. Should achieve same result. Great result overall with the FX and all!
Ben making awesome videos is a great start of 2021
Very interesting the CRT, now it looks realistic as hell! 👌🏻
Thanks so much! 9 out of 10 TV mechanics can't tell the difference
best crt effect tutorial out there!
Thanks WE!
THANK YOU!!!!Genuinely didn’t think I had the chops to keep up with this tutorial but now I have a beautiful filter comp to add to my short films 😪💙
Literally found this video after being inspired by that Technology Connections video. Both of you guys have great channels. Love the approach of understanding how CRT technology works in order to make the effect.
Looks fine as hell, thanks for the great tutorial!
Marriot is a monster with building effects and tutorials 🙌🔥🔥🔥
Ben Marriott president of the universe!!!!!!!
You’re a genius for this!! Wow!!
Thanks mate!!
When I say that this is the best tutorial for this by far, I really mean it. I went on a binge and scoured UA-cam for CRT tutorials and none of them came close to the quality of this... But for me it still falls short in one same way the others do. The phosphor dots only act as a mask for other footage, meaning that if a part of that footage falls halfway over a phosphor dot, it'll only apply to part of the dot. For me, the perfect CRT effect would be able to take this into account and somehow get an average of the pixels under the phosphor dot mask and apply the effect to that.
Could be fixed by "pixelating" the footage below. Applying "mosaic" to your footage to fit the new "resolution" of the phosphorus dots to make them react to "one pixel" and not fall a part... Maybe we should decrease the tri-pixel size. I'll give it a chance, by the way, good point.
The way you work on a project is incredible
every other crt overlay pack costs $4 so i decided to make my own crt overlay and you have always been a legend to give everyone a hand to making crt overlays thanks man
@Ben Marriott really useful techniques. you did a wonderful crt screen. thank you very much :)
I've had to do this kind of effect so many times I ended up buying a few CRT TVs and borrow a camera to film them! I still love doing this effect in AE though... very fun to do a Matrix into-the-screen effect by playing the footage on a TV, zoom in with the camera then composite in AE to the original footage using a phosphor grid texture over the top animated to zoom in and out really quickly. It's very rewarding when you get the motion juuust right :)
You're talking about the CRT effect seen when the camera zooms into the TVs showing Neo in the interrogation room and when he's talking to the Architect, right?
Ooooo that sounds so satisfying! I'm tempted to get my own CRT's haha
@@JayPlime Spot on ! ;)
@@BenMarriott its a dangerous hobby.. be warned! I'd really like to try making some UA-cam videos about them actually. Absolutely love your work though, Ben- specifically the mixed material type projects
i don't even use after effects but this is incredible. sometimes i just watch AE tutorials to see if there's anything i can use in Premiere.
ben you're the best !!! cheers from brazil
Phosphor dots is my new favourite word
Been waiting on this one! Looking great Ben!
Thanks so much! Hope it lived up to the hype :)
We’ll see 😉 haha
Another perfect tutorial. Literally just yesterday I was searching up a vhs color correction method and nobody’s tutorial final product got it quite as right as you just did. Seriously your vids and tutorials have helped my videos tremendously
The intro in CRT was so amazing
Brilliant tutorial - thanks!
bro this is insane. Congrats
this almost feels illegal to watch because it’s so helpful please never take it down
This efect looks so good!
Great work as always, Ben. I have been looking for this effect for a while and yours is very streamlined. I appreciate how you always take time to show and explain how these layering effects affect the project. All the best and stay safe.
This video is actually crazy! Thankyou Ben
Thanks George!
@@BenMarriott He knows I exist!!
It hurts my eye.... i love it
Thanks dude...It helps alot especially on beginners like
Thanks for that! U've saved my PLC with this tutorial.
Very nice results! Great job ben, you're a real 21st century gem
I don’t know how you think of this stuff.. you are awesome!
Freakin FINALLY! Been looking to replicate this look without a plug-in. Thank you!
Honestly I’ve been hoping someone would do a tutorial for this! Thank you sm!
This was sooo enjoyable to watch and learn how a colour CRT works. I have CRTs and often rescan footage to give it that look but this was something else. This was really good modelling. Thanks very much for the video
That Guy Thanks, I will look into it later.
My guy, Ben! Out here, killing it!
I've been watcNice tutorialng tNice tutorials and you inspired to try to make soft so I thank you
Thanks!! this is exactly what i was looking for. Neat trick with the displacement map but honestly i dont think i fully understand how it worked just yet but it totally works. lol
ah early again! love this tutorial man!! any retrowave stuff is always great learn 👉😎👉
Your tutorial are seriously the best Ben!! I never would have thought recreating crt effect on after effects, its so awesome!! Great work♥️
very much your efforts to help us noobs out.
Great work buddy! Learned a lot from this.....will apply in my videos.
Hell yeah!
Ben I was literally trying to figure this out the night before you put this up. Yours is way easier my my pc 😂
I love that effect
thanks for the video
Lovely details! :)
I also really like softEX, it has a very nice effect to it
Thanks so much for this bro! This is exactly what I needed for a project.
Really excited to try this feature out! Amazing work !
I'm going to do this asap
Ben, thank you for inspiration!!!
you're mindblowing!

yoooo , you are a genius! this is awesome!
thanks! now I can make the analog horror of my nightmares!!
Omg I’ve been looking for this! Was considering purchasing a plug in and then here you are... haha. Much love
I saw you working on this on Insta, and started trying to figure it out in my head. So when I watched the video I was guessing on what you would do next. I was pretty close.
YAAAASSS Been waiting for a good comprehensive tutorial on this effect for ages
Boss tut. Straight to buss. Top
amazing, so much better than doing with external plugins, thanks for the tutorial, greetings from brazil 🇧🇷👍
Great tutorial as always! I have a suggestion, instead of using the "Venetian Blinds" and stuff, you can use "Motion Tile" to make multiple objects and also offset them with one single effect.
Keep up the good work!
That's a fantastic suggestion! Thanks so much for sharing :D
can you explain the steps after i've used repetile?
Hey there, late to this, but struggling when adding set matte. Only original 3 pixels in Precomp are registering in matte, not the whole grid? Any clue why?
Making the stripped mask with the "venetian blinds" effect is so smart and easy. Probably I should test out all effects in After Effects, so that next time I need an easy solutions, I will come up with something like this!
Thank you Sensei.
Ben did you watch Wandavision because with this tutorial you are more than spot on with their endcredit sequence...
Omg just spent 2 hours working on this omg omg omg thank you so much this is amazing 👑🙌🏻
Brilliant tutorial! Thanks for sharing!
thank you so much :) amazing tuto
Awesome vid. Thanks Ben
Love this tutorial! You’re a genius Ben!
Hahaha the intro looked so cool!!!
Splendid work, mate! Keep 'em coming! Thanks for sharing your experience!
THIS IS SOOOO COOLLL OMGG
Never disappointed! Amazing work.
oooo i really wanted a tut like this thanks
Thank you for that tut
You're welcome!
Thank you Ben, this effect was really fun to make alongside you!
Great tutorial! Definitely will be using this! Thanks man.
I'VE WANTED THIS FOR SO LONG THANK YOU
yessss ben you slayed this
great tutorial! thnx Ben!
Thx mate, really useful to give a different look
As always, your video blows my mind! Never seen an RGB split done like this before and it looks really good. Probably going to make this as a stock asset for myself that I can use when a project would look good with it, lol. It's definitely an effect that's probably best viewed from further away, because my eyes were were having a hard time taking in that effect overlaying your intro. 😅
Thanks a lot! This has really helped.
