  • Learn how to make bite leaders, the most critical part of your bluefin setup, with this tutorial from BDOutdoors Pro Contributor Nate Winicki. Perfect for nighttime bluefin fishing.
Nighttime bluefin fishing can often be your best shot at a trophy-grade fish, and rigging up with the correct gear can mean the difference between landing that personal best or watching it swim away.
Today BD Outdoors Pro Contributor, Nate Winicki, walks us through one of the most critical parts of your bluefin setup: the bite leader. When fishing for large bluefin, the part of your line under the most stress is the first three feet from your hook. This is where the fish has the most chance of biting through the leader or using leverage to break you off under the boat. With a heavy bite leader, you eliminate the chance for bite-offs and create an ultra-strong connection from your lure to the rest of your main line.

Also good rule of thumb is to burn the tag end so it cant not pass through the crimp if the line some how slips.

To expand on that, mushroom the end of the tag end; every little bit of resistance can help.

And every brand of mono/fluoro line will be a different diameter for the same pound rating. Make sure to always know your line diameter (don’t base any crimping hardware on pound test of the line) and choose the correctly sized crimps accordingly.

Do you prefer to tie your main line to the bite leader swivel, or crimp it on?

I personally tie my main line to the swivel. One leader for multiple jigs

To each his own but I ALWAYS crimp my 130# mono wind-on leaders to my 300# fluorocarbon bite leaders. I don’t trust tying and being able to cinch down knots well enough above 80# line personally. Crimping has not failed me yet for landing nighttime BFT on the jigs & Eddy Bombs.
