During the Korean War U.S. Prop Planes shot down MIG's on a couple occasions-- The Hawker Sea Fury shot down a MIG-15 and The AU4 Corsair also shot down a MIG-15! Vietnam-- A-1 Skyraider shoots down MIG-17 I believe on two separate occasions!! Request Fly Either-- Hawker Hurricane, Super Tucano, P-47, P-51, or Spitfire! Against The MIG-15!!👍

I don't think I've ever seen a one-vs-one between a Saab JA-37 Viggen and an F-14B Tomcat. Both were interceptors (one land/one fleet) of the same era. The Viggen first flew in 1967 and was finally retired from active Swedish service in 2005. enquiring minds just wanna know. ^~^

There's a good reason the F-86 was quickly introduced over Korea. My father was a really fearsome adversary to those early jets until he finally met a worthy and respected rival.

The F-84 suffered from the same problem alot of early jets had. The tech advanced so fast that it seemed that a new jet would come out and it would be the king of the mountain....for 6 months.

Who knows the mustang turns about as well. I have heard someone say the a10 has similar performance to the mustang and I want this to be tested.
I mean, the top speed of the two is similar and I'd assume the turn on the a-10 is probably not the worst without suspended armament or only missiles if it can carry those, it'd be interesting that's for sure

@@fubaralakbar6800 Pulling G isn't a measure of turn rate. G is a factor of angle of attack, velocity, thrust, and many other factors. F-84s were also meant to be a fighter-bomber strike aircraft so comparing them to a pure interceptor or fighter is fool hearty to begin with. And in Korea as strike aircraft they performed wonderfully.
At optimal airspeed the F-84 could hold it's own against The MiG-15. The problem is that due to it's lower acceleration from higher weight it would fall outside that faster then the MiG-15. Republic F-84s flew 86,408 missions, and were the Air Force’s primary strike aircraft. They were credited with destroying or damaging 105 MiG-15s; 173 Thunderjets were lost or damaged in combat.
For a strike aircraft that is an exceptionally low loss to sortie rate.

@@Kurogumo you realize that you can take an instrumentation from over 10 years ago and recreate it using more modern equipment and it’s probably going to sound slightly different - along with adding/removing some instrumentation.
It literally has the same chord progression and if you can’t see that then I guess this is a lost cause.

The F84, like some have already commented below, was primarily a ground attack bird. It started off originally as a fighter escort but that role was quickly replaced by the F86.

According to the Fleet Air Arm pilots who flew Sea Fury's against the MiG 15, the *cough* Korean pilots used both calibres of cannon when dogfighting...
Technically the North Koreans also flew Mig-15 not just the Russians
I would love to see the MIG-15 against the F9F Panther. The MIG was CLEARLY a far superior aircraft but US Navy pilots flying Panthers managed to shoot down multiple MIG-15's during the Korean War.
When you put a WWII veterans against pilots that barely even know what a jet aircraft is, then you shouldn't be surprised that the veterans win, even with a bit of a worse equipment
I am listening to an audiobook about it right now. F9F apparently used four 20mm canons, which had a much better ability to knock down the MiG 15. The MiG was built to be extremely tough. Also, according to the pilots, the MiG had a better rate of climb and performed better at high altitude, while the Sabre was more maneuverable and could out-dive the MiG. F86 was the first jet capable of breaking the sound barrier in a dive. MiG could not do it due to the placement of it’s rear stabilizer.
Those rounds sure are devastating to fighter sized planes... But allow me to introduce... *the HS 129's cannon*

Wow as a young boy watching the flying happening in Manston RAF/USAF AFB I always have memories that the F84 was a superior aircraft,but I now know the Mig 15 bis was so much more superior.The USAF Pilots were really suffering hard to survive if alone in the Sky with an F84 God Bless Them. My idea for f84 is don't turn, go straight. Keep 700-900 km/h when Mig gains on You do flat scisors (at high speed f84 should have better roll) and try to make Mig overshoot and take a snapshot.

I wonder if the F-80 and F-84 would've fared better against the MiG-15 if they had a higher thrust-to-weight ratio and all-moving horizontal stabs instead of the classic elevators.... the straight wings limited speed but likely would've made them more maneuverable at slow speeds.
It would be good to see Korean vintage P51 or even better, F4U Corsair up against the MiG15...or even a RAAF Meteor

Back around 2003 or 2004 I was in Bosnia and there were a bunch of F-84F aircraft on the gun range. So we blasted them with our M-60s from Black Hawks... Shame to do it to a classic old airplane, but they were already trashed anyway.
Thought this was a war thunder vid until I saw which channel it was lol
My only disappointment is that Shotgun did not find a way to cobra the Thunderjet and tag you with a couple of rounds as the wings fell off under aerodynamic strain!

It served well in the ground attack role
So the myth continues. For context, the early F84 pilots were straight out of peace time training schools and didn't have the experience that later F84 pilots had because the USAF transferred former P47 units stationed in Europe who had WW2 experience. The Far East Airforce pilots were predominantly replacement occupation forces who hadn't seen combat. Experienced WW2 P47 units stationed flying F84s had greater success and showed that they could more than hold their own against the Migs. At medium altitudes even the F80 could outturn the Mig.( I'm summarising)

There's a few manoeuvres the 84 could a used to mitigate the MIGs turn rate advantage. Cross controlling, barrel roll to the outside etc... I don't see anyone using these little "tricks".

Mig-15 almost has every advantage except for ammo count. Plus Wing tip fuel tanks didn't help the F-84G in side attacks in IRL.

You could've spiral climbed in the rate fight then used superior role rate to get your nose on him. But still you did well.
