Look at this - yep that’s a NASCAR stock car competing with GTs and Prototypes at Le Mans. And they were QUICKER than Ferrari, Aston Martin and Porsche!
It’s a Next-Gen Camaro that has been adapted to work at Le Mans. But if you missed it, you might be a bit confused about how this came about.
NASCAR has changed a lot recently, with newer, more aerodynamic cars.
Centre-lock wheels rather than the zzz,zzz,zzz,zzz,zzz lug nuts they used to run.
They’ve even moved to more F1-looking tyres rather than the old-style, tall-sidewall ones. Also adding a rear diffuser, typical on other race cars but very new for stock cars.
BUT, one of the bigger changes is that they are running more road courses than they used to, racing at tracks like Circuit of the Americas, Watkins Glen, and a favourite of mine - the Charlotte Roval.
So stock cars aren’t just for turning left, and they have shown that in recent seasons. But, not in the same way GT cars or prototypes can handle Le Mans for 24 hours though, right?

I suggested this with the EuroNASCAR and NASCAR Brazil. Considering I don't rank highly both series(not bad, but not exactly appealing and more 2nd step to other series), I think it would be good to have them running at tracks like Vallelunga or Interlagos or Brands Hatch with these types of cars in those 2 sub series.
Good idea, but probably way too expensive. They replaced alot of a normal stock car with carbon fiber....that = $$$.

I love that Le Mans was so welcoming of this team and allowed them to truly gather as much data and have as much fun as possible. This is what the racing community is all about. We're all in this together!

I mean, the C6 and C7 Corvettes were already proven to be quite competitive for years at Le Mans. The race teams behind the cars were highly respectable in the racing community.

@@kopicat2429 Artificially limiting performance will by definition be less "real" performance than unregulated.
@@xMidan Not sure I agree on that one friend. Regulation does not mean less real, as there is nothing fake about the performance. So not quite sure what you mean by it being less real.
I might be rather pedantic about it here, but I don't believe there are much of anything out there without some sort of artificial limiting in one form or another. Because rules exists, and any rule will by definition be a limit on what you can do.
Everything is limited to some extent. Speed will always be limited because physics. Then we have human limits. Now in all fairness, these aren't exactly artificial limits. But is there even any sort of performance out there without some form of artificial limiting?
Funding, rules, regulation, morality among others to name a few. Heck, even the 'unregulated' stuff has rules and regulations too, just of a different kind. Not like you can just go and openly sabotage the opponents, or just beat the crap out of them before the competition.
If we go by that definition, anything that is not limited by rules, regulation and morals are not real performances. That would then include just about every single legal activity in the world.
I guess it then would all come down to what you consider artificial limiting. And what you would consider not. And maybe what you mean by saying it's less real.
I'll end it by at least mentioning that I have no idea if you were trying to say that NASCAR is more real or not. Or if you just figured you'd mention your opinion/take on regulation in sport. But NASCAR also has its own numerous rules and regulations.

Sneakily stolen from my squadron in the U.S. Navy. Our motto was, "If you're not having fun, you're not doing it right." It was the motto painted on the wall for many many decades. I won't try to claim when that actually started, as I do not know. I was in the Navy starting in 1982, and it had obviously been there much longer than that.
@@DanBlackRacing It's worse than that. A terrible sound with speed. Listen to the TT Zero bikes compared to the Senior TT bikes. All you have with the electric bikes are a very loud, very high pitched whine from the electric motor or gear box. Not sure what is making the sound on the TT Zero bikes, but it sounds horrific.

If you think that's a Chevy you're a goof. All stock cars racing in Nascar are EXACTLY the same car. Nascar DOES NOT allow teams to modify cars according to the teams own design like they did years ago. There are strict regulations now, all the cars are the same in everything except name. This is also why Jimmy Johnson is THE BEST Nascar driver of all time. They're all racing in the exact same version of the fastest stock car to ever drive and Jimmy consistently wins more than anyone else.

It's not as impressive as it seems. It finished place 39 out of 40. The other cars behind 40 were all DNF, which this car also would have been if it had to follow the same rules (gearbox replacement)

@@odeo5691 Because Muscle cars are known to have that straight line edge. But Le Mans is literally not about passing other people, it's an endurance competition. Even the LMP cars only use like 400-500HP engines

It just makes sense. 'Stock cars' are endurance monsters; why not race them in *the* premiere endurance race? Glad to see it come to fruition.
the camaro was never a stock car . but since there are no full size cars built in america any more races like the daytona 500 has become a mustang vs camaro ...since the 2010 z/28 camaro turn in a lap time of the 13 mile nurburgring that was 100%street legal with half the horsepower turned a lap time of 7 minutes 37seconds that was quicker the chevy's own corvette ''at this time maybe i should inform you of the suspension as it a copy of the suspension of the only one of its kind only found on the aston martin one 77

@donniebaker5984 it was 2014, and the corvette of that year set a 7:04 unofficially, stock car had originally stood for unmodified but as i am sure you are aware from the years, had nothing to do with the model

It’s why I like to watch pikes peak hill climbs so much, so many unique vehicles
It's very much a double-edged sword. Sure it's cool to see something different, but given the amount of crashes even in the strictly regulated classes I don't even want to think about what happens if you throw a few dozen experimentals of varying levels of sketchy into the mix.

Americans are happy about their team (and it makes sense of course), but I want to underline how amazing it is for Le Mans to allow these projects to join the race. It's in the spirit of the race, of course, but it's still amazing considering that now it's a well enstablished format. You don't see stuff like this anywhere else. Pikes Peak and other competitions are only about unregulated projects, this is a mixup between regulated and well enstablished categories and unregulated, and it's great. It's not granted at all, that after all this time and history, we still see things like this. What I mean is that competitions over time tend to become more and more scientific and predictable, here you can see anything, instead, and I hope it will stay like this forever
Sadly the G56 entries are extremely underfunded, so they often don't end up in the race after applying (getting approved isn't exactly easy). From what I've seen in interviews, NASCAR spent quite a bit of money and time on this, and it shows.
Lets hope that the G56 entry recieves a bit more attention in the future, as some of the projects that's applied for it are very interesting with full EV and Hydrogen powertrains.

This was what I loved about it, aside from being able to watch it fly. Le mans is such a big official thing, yet they still had an invitation class with an experimental car. Nice to see Motorsports roots still apply to the biggest race of the year, fast and sometimes weird machines pushing it to the limit. Same with the dacia and foxtail at the n24
Does anyone want electric cars that all look exactly the same and more telemetry than Apollo 11? It's a car race, not a science fair. I don't want predictability, I want to hear engines that roar, a $3 hot dog and a cold beer.
@@dicksonfranssen Do I want EVs in racing? Not really, but what else will they race in 30 years? But I think that EV's are extremely interesting out of a technical aspect, they let you do quite a bit of stuff ICE's struggle with, and I truly want to see how the hell they'll manage to build batteries that can charge 100KWh in less than a minute, it's like trying to squeeze an explosion back into it's casing.
I’m a road course guy and hence, not a huge NASCAR fan BUT, stories like this… they simply make my soul smile. Hence, year after year, hope for more road courses in NASCAR persists.
Wicked mad props to the Hendrick Motorsports team for making my soul smile and the same to the Le Mans officials for accommodating the Hendrick efforts AND letting them see it ALL the way to the end.

But it's not a NASCAR. If it was, it would have performed terribly, which by the way is normal, as each race car is optimised to the type of race it is participating in, with the rules imposed on them.

It's not about saying that NASCAR is good or bad. This car was not a NASCAR as all regulations ere thrown out of the window. And that's fine, that made it much more interesting. But no matter the car category, what makes the specifications is the rules. And the rules of NASCAR can not compete on this kind of race with GT cars ! That's the very reason why some teams were worried about the disparity of the performances. And their assessment was right if the regulations would have been followed !
@@fabr5747 this we can agree on. It's why Ford doesn't run the nascar Mustang as both and has a dedicated (or did) gt3 car. Personally, I don't like any of that kind of racing. It's fucking boring. Yeah, the endurance side of things is awesome but it's kids stuff compared to Rally or Baja racing or the kind I really like, street legal drag and drive racing. Wanna know endurance, try making a sub 3000hp car drive over 800 miles, run 250mph in a 1/4, then pack up and do it all again.
The car can never be “a NASCAR.” “NASCAR Cup Series” would be correct. I would cringe inside when a broadcaster referred to the car as “a National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing.” They should know better. :)

I believe part of the reason why they didn't go with a winged spoiler was the fact that many of these engineers remembered the rolling bricks known as the Car of Tomorrow (Gen 5). The first couple of years with those wretched things had wings that actually proved to only make the cars incredibly unstable rather than adding pointless downforce. Now that could have just been the design of the wing, but I feel the designers made the right decision going with a traditional (albeit incredibly large) stock car style spoiler.

Also, a lot of rear wings are mounted to the frame directly, so the suspension isn't pushing agaisnt the wing. Rather the wing is pushing down directly on the tires.
@@BigZ971 It works on some cars, but the way that Nascar designs their cars these days causes those big rear wings to cause more harm then good.

The diffusers probably made the larger wing unnecessary
the COTs were incredibly stable at higher speeds moving forward. that wing did a great job at creating a shit load of downforce for those cars. the only issue with them is when the car got sideways, that same wing that was generating a ton of downforce was now generating that same amount in lift. a 747 takes off only at 167mph, you get you a car that weighs a fraction of that moving ~30mph faster. its honestly a wonder that those cars didn't wreck more than they did.
Just on a side note: Jenson Button looks and sounds genuinely relaxed and happy in these interview clips. Glad to see he''s enjoying life post F1.
Obviously. Its super dangerous and has almost zero safety precautions. People talk a lot of crap about Nascar but they have some of the safest cars in racing. They dont sacrifice the most basic driver safety on a whim.

Love it. Thanks to our European brethren for being such good sports about allowing a Nascar in the race. It made for a unique spectacle, and I'm sure it helped the Le Mans race garner a lot of extra attention!

It was a great idea. Bit disingenuous to title it as they beat Ferrari though. The GTE cars run to a restrictive set of rules. The Ferrari makes over 100hp less than the road car it’s based on for example.

I have a buddy who works for Hendrick Motor Sports who was on the Le Mans project. He said it was the most fun that the designers have had building a car in years, and you can really tell in the way Jenson talked about the experience.
I can only imagine. The bane of any race team is the rule book. Throw that out the window & they'll be like a kid in a candy shop.
I've often wondered what sort of car would result if a NASCAR team were to take the rules, and ignore other one. Perhaps even building one "even" car and one "odd" car, then run some test laps somewhere.

@@riddell26I'm sure you are aware that this entry was built and raced by Hendrick Motorsports, arguably the top team in Nascar. Their most famous Cup series car is the #24 driven by Jeff Gordon. Ironic because Jimmie Johnson drove the #48 in the Cup series. Dale Earnhardt raced for Richard Childress Racing, who are not involved in the Project.
I'm a Brit and I love NASCAR, I've been to the US many times but 2 of those occasions were specifically to go to the Daytona 500.
What an amazing event that is, no Formula 1 race comes close to the insane passion of NASCAR.
Making an "European race spec" NASCAR is a motoring wet dream for me! 😍

@@jeremyweems4916 - I was in the British military for 25yrs and served with Americans many times, that's where I got my love of NASCAR.
The first time I went to Daytona was with a couple of USMC guys from Tennessee who I'd served with in Iraq.

While I've never been big into NASCAR, I've always been told that the mechanics and engineers in it were some of the best in motorsports and completely underappreciated. I'm glad they got to show that not only are they the best, but they're adaptable, too.
They're simply the best... even better than F1 I'd say.
@@barobaro1 f1 cars fall apart if they touch tips. Those cars are designed like speed bicycles and have about as much safety equipment. If they could design a car that didn't disintegrate over the slightest provocation and didn't decapitate, explode, or set their drivers on fire, i would say they were the best. As it stands they are grossly underengineered and have no consideration for driver safety. Plus they aren't fun to drive. See any f1 driver in a different car and they light up. Its purely a spectator sport, its pretty much a blood sport like gladiatorial games

I was rather skeptical when they rolled up in that thing before Le Mans, giving it a good 3-4h before shutting the garage door. At the end of the race I was literally screaming at it lap after lap. It was an absolute joy to see and I’m genuinely happy that I was able to experience such a monster in real life.

People don't realize how incredible it is that a *production* chassis car is able to hang with purpose-built race cars. Most Le Mans cars are purpose built mid-engine race cars with tons of downforce, very little drag, pushrod suspension, and they weigh practically nothing. Meanwhile the camero has the aerodynamics of a refrigerator and a 2 valve pushrod engine, and it passed mclaren and ferrari on a straightaway. Unbelievable, and incredible skill from the drivers.

Gotta give props to the wec/Le mans management for being flexible with where they put them and allowing them to continue because they're the testbed team. I'd love to see more crazy things in Le mans. Delta wing 2 maybe?

Absolutely agree. I totally understand this ruffling feathers and upsetting some people, and I love that they made it work, without taking away from the legitimate and returning teams. I definitely feel like this reinvigorated interest in Le Mans, especially from fans who didn’t know or didn’t care prior to this. And, like the man said, it’s just fun.
I know it’s not as cool as this but I would love to see a section for alternative propulsion like EV and hydrogen. Somewhere for the manufacturers to push the batteries, motors, charging, aerodynamics etc. Right or wrong we are coming up to a new frontier for the car and Le Man would be a fantastic place to develop it all.

Was at the race last weekend, this car was amazing. Made us laugh every time it came past as it just sounded so bloody good. A breath of fresh air at the race and so glad that they made it to the end, they should all be proud of giving us fans something really different. Loved it.
Hear me out, teams in Nascar and LMP2 should have alliances (like Hendricks and Europol) for LMP2 Oval races and Nascar around Monza, dare I say Monaco, or Spa.
The difference in the engine sounds reminds me of motorcycle racing. The HP inline 4s vs the HP V2s. I love to see it
I respect and understand that things change but if im being honest the older NASCARs from the Early 2000's will always have a special place in my heart
As a NASCAR fan, I am so proud of the entire crew that made this happen. To finish this race in its entirety is something I honestly wasn't expecting.
But. They didnt finish, the car actually broke down and was allowed to change parts that are never allowed in a race car. Not to mention the carbon fiber, weight loss, 25x more expensive braking system, custom made tyres just for this race and this car etc.... a "cheap" stock car became something completaly different... It just kept its outer shell and engine block base.. but even that was overtuned with parts that you cant and wont find in NAscar rules nor Le Mans rules. The Garage 56 did a great job... but....the greatest work was made by the marketing team.

@@elisterr You're way off base here. That's because it's a one-of car. Thinking that NASCAR couldn't compete in GT2 or something similar is very silly. A lot of the companies that compete in NASCAR also were pretty strong in GT2 etc.
That’s the first time I’ve ever been excited to watch NASCAR in my life. NASCAR should get into more things like this and more road courses, modernize the cars a little bit, especially in regards to weight and breaking capabilities. Cool video.
I'm a little torn on that. The whole point of stock car racing was to use, y'know, stock cars. Buy a car off the lot, sup it up in your garage, take it to the local track.
Course that's kinda already gone I suppose, and they're stuck in a weird middle ground. Restrictor plates on the super speedways, stock cars on the road tracks. I'd love to see a Talladega race without the horsepower cap. Take some steps to prevent the fans in the first few rows from getting turned into a red mist by an airborne car and let the drivers go
@gamemeister27 I really enjoy old stock cars because they were still production cars, just modified. It made the race so interesting, and forced manufactures to make cool cars with intent to modify for racing. Now I find NASCAR boring, because there is no variety in the cars.

@@Borderline5440 Was cutting edge 60 years ago to have center locks and fuel injection, 20 years ago to have sequentials. The Maserati Tipo from 1959 was tube chassis.

Stock cars are beasts in a cage in NASCAR races. They actually are great on the track with the modifications done to them like on this one.
I'd love to see this more often. It looks incredible, and I love seeing new types of car on the track. So much for only being able to turn left!
The G56 Nascar was awesome, but I kind of wish we got to see a direct comparison between a normal stock car and GT3 car.

It would be no match, and that's not strange since they have completely different sets of rules. Nascar rules are a bit primitive on purpose, this way it keeps cost under control and it keeps the differences between teams as small as possible increasing the excitement in the race. For a bystander it doesn't make any difference if the car is 5 seconds a lap faster as long as the racing is close.
I went to this year's 24 Houres of Le Mans and you could hear that car coming from miles away, is one of the best sounding cars that I have ever heard and one of the most beautiful at night.
You should come to a open public night at a Texas drag strip if you want to hear beautiful sounding motors scream.

@@TheGreekModeler drag racing is amazing. if ur interested, the channel 1320 goes to the big dragracing events and interviews the drivers about their cars and documents the racing. there are a few events a year where people have to drive their cars (ranging from like 500hp all the way to 3000hp) over 1000 miles to 5 different race tracks and then turn in time slips. the most famous one is called Drag Week but theres also Sick Week and Rocky Mountain Drag Week. all these cars have to be street legal and reliable but still have thousands of horsepower and GIANT rear tires. its a fun event to follow.

I love the idea of the Garage 56 entry, because there is precious little racing that just tells the engineers “make it as fast as possible”.
I imagine NASCAR and Chevvy learned a lot about what the car can do, things like what components are limiting factors, how long a gearbox can hang on for, how hard can the engine run power wise. I imagine stripping that engine down afterwards to see how it had faired was very interesting for the engineers.
I doubt that Chevy had much input, since there probably not one stock chevy part on it.

Don't get me wrong, watching a cart break 230mph is rad, but there is nothing sweeter in cart racing than watching a machine defy our perception of physics by pulling 6 G's through a sweeping corner. I agree with some of the aforementioned though, watching the cars go in a circle the whole time gets boring after a while. And I can see where oval fans could get bored without their contact, intensity and "danger." However, Group B Rally (God rest it's soul) was the MOST entertaining to watch. The cars and drivers ran on pure hi-octane testosterone (and probably cocaine, it was the 80's.) Never a dull moment. Hence why it was cancelled... That's what we should all be banding toward bringing back.
NASCAR has been running races, and even full series, abroad for decades.

It would be interesting to see a race series where pretty much anything goes but there is a cap on how much a team can spend.
I don't watch hardly any racing and I get that most people want to see the best driver but I think it would be fun to focus on the best technology and engineering and having a great driver is just icing on the cake.
I'm not a NASCAR fan at all but I do like this. It hearkens back to the days when racing was more run whatcha brung and not so sterile and regimented as it is these days. I miss those days. It was exciting to see what new thing each team would try that season and see who had a brilliant idea and who didn't. And sure, if an idea worked too well, then it would be "dealt with" in next season's rules in some fashion, which is fine and good. But in the meantime, you got to see good ideas stand out and be rewarded for a season. These days everything is essentially a spec car series. Sure, you can build your own car, but you have to make it essentially identical to every other car. And if you stand out, you will get hammered down with BoP in the name of "competition". And then because everything is hammered out into exactly the same so that there isn't any passing anymore, then they have to come up with gimmicks to fabricate the passing that they hammered out.
For anyone who heard a Cup car for the first time at Le Mans, now imagine 42 Cup cars in a row all doing 180mph - it sounds like a WWII bomber raid! Cheap or free ear plugs really ought to be available at NASCAR races. NASCAR oval racing doesn't quite make sense until seen and heard up close, but it's one of the craziest things to see live.
Ikr. Never been to a motorsport event sadly but I heard from someone that went to the Daytona 500 that to watch those cars 200+ mph, he told me that's crazy to see.

NASCAR is one of those things that doesn't translate well at all on TV. On TV it's okay but not necessarily exciting. Being there live is COMPLETELY different! The wall of sound is truly shocking when you go to your first race.
It is impressive. Still find it boring though. Countless laps behind the pace car after crashes. Round and round and round. Meh.
Ive never seen nascar as an aussie but want to. When people ask me why id be interested in that as its boring, i should them footage from just behind the catch fence of the pack flying past and they go wow ok thats alot faster and louder than i thought 🤣

This was just an all around feel good, good for Motorsport event that’s not so common. NASCAR and Lemans got great publicity from this and opened a lot of people’s minds to experiencing racing in different ways. The fact that they worked with each other to pull this off is awesome. And mad props to Hendricks Motorsport for investing fully into this car. I always looked at NASCAR as not my style because of a lack of engineering, and was I wrong. They showed what they can do and it’s excellent. Respect!

Agreed for the most part. The car was extensively modified away from being NASCAR regulated - more towards the GT cars we all appreciate. So it's basically a different type of GT car, just with less restrictions since it's not in an actual class. The bones are still there, of course, and I'd like to see more experiments like this.
I love this because it does actually address that Hendricks HAD to extensively modify it towards a GTE because NASCAR stock cars are meant to run one 3hr race and then run a different car next race. So how Hendricks made a 3hr lifespan car turn into a 24hr car is amazing and shows that if NASCAR was looking for endurance they could easily make some outstanding cars.
NASCAR needs its own series of cars like this..... I'm honestly loving this unlimited class style racing and wish for a better gearbox to handle the power next time around.
I 100% support this message. Classes with no rules or very few rules are where innovation is born. A class with only a spec tire size, engine size, and minimum weight would be great.

Porsche unleashed the 919 evo that won Lemans 2 times in a row, and that car broke every record at every track around the world.
Even Louis Hamilton SPA lap record in a F1 by 12 seconds.
That is a huge W coming from the organisers. They show how passionate they are about the motorsport and let experimental teams like them enter. Hope to see more like this in the future and I'm glad everything went safe (except the gearbox)
NASCAR really is under appreciated. Raikkonen even said it's the rawest and purest form of motorsport. Not to mention the engineers. Also, NASCAR has dedicated countless millions into driver safety, there have been wrecks in recent memory that looked like an absolute horror show just for the driver to popout unscathed.
The driver safety is what I appreciate the most. While I'm perfectly OK with minor injuries happening, I do NOT want to see a driver get killed or maimed. After all, driving that fast is inherently dangerous, so it's a safe bet that the drivers DO sign up for the possibility of bumps, bruises, and the occasional broken bone and are perfectly OK with dealing with those things after hitting a wall at 180 MPH. But NOBODY signs on to die or get permanently and seriously injured. Dale Earnhardt was the last driver fatality in the NASCAR cup series and let's hope it stays that way.

When the most beloved driver in the history of your sport dies in a wreck, it's a pretty big wake up call. Safety has been NASCAR's #1 priority since Earnhardt died.
NASCAR is really the only form of auto racing I enjoy because its meticulously balanced to ensure the races are won by the best race teams, not the deepest pockets. The whole point of oval is to ensure it's driver vs. driver, not car vs. track.
Being a lone American f1, wec, and wrc fan in Texas, I had so many people asking me about this car. This heightened the intrest of people that usually have no interest in anything other than nascar or "football". It was fun introducing people to the world of endurance racing and discussing all that is involved.
So it has achieved its one purpose in that regard too. How nice to hear :)

I've watched my first NASCAR race(s) last February in Atlanta and it was incredible fun. So much fun that I will come back (from Germany) in September to watch the autumn races in Atlanta and Talladega. I followed NASCAR since the 90's on TV and later the internet and I always wanted to see one in person and it was really worth it. When the whole field comes out of turn 4 and fly's by it is so intense and incredible loud you cannot imagine till you see and hear it in person.
Honestly endurance racing is the true pinnacle of motorsport at this point.
If I am not mistaken, the gearbox was not swapped but was removed and rebuilt using the destroyed one!
Lots of people were surprised due to the fact no one usually rebuilds stuff, just replace it and call it a day!
I imagine they weren't expecting the gearbox to blow up so didn't even have a spare. But fixing it is even more impressive.
They did have a spare (several actually, including one in the backup car... Yes, they brought an entire second car in case of issues during testing/free practice) so it was replaced entirely. It would have been impossible to try to remove the floor and suspension of the car, get the gearbox out, completely rebuild it, reinstall it, and put the floor and suspension back on in that amount of time
Even if they replaced, they're not competing for anything. It's just for fun of the drivers, the team, the fans and to research new techs. I'd let them swap the entire engine if they wanted lol

Its size next to the other cars is hilarious. Next year I’d like to see a BTCC car get reinforced for 24hr Le Mans.
BTCC will likely not ever race Le Mans proper.
But in the Creventic 24H Series, the organizers allowed a TCR spec touring car to run the Monza 12H.
They gave it a weight break and allowed them to have a slightly lower ride height than TCR regulations.

@febrianadji5758 it was quick for running 2:01 around Monza,but it was still amongst the slowest,and was one of the last classified running cars.
I believe all cars kept it under 2mins for Monza.
TCR by no means slow,just not yet quick enough to really fight a GT4.
But BTCC I believe runs TCR regs.
TCR is a set of rules cars are built to.
The idea of going TCR was so the rules were "unified" and one car can compete in any TCR championship,much like any GT3 can compete anywhere under GT3.
Loved the call out for the roval, I'm local to it and had a blast seeing that camaro rip around it this year before the race.

I absolutely loved this, I'm just a small dirt track and demolition derby driver myself in the US, and no hate to any other drivers or all the beautiful race cars at Lemans, but hearing the Bald Eagle scream of that big American made V8 in basically a lighter cut down stock car with lights and special tires/rims next to the higher revving super cars specifically made for that track just made me smile 😂😂

I actually thought they ran the 550 hp setup, but if they ran a 750 hp is explains why it was faster on the early straights. It did showpromise, so very unique and impressive that they got it through for so long.
There's no way anyone in NASCAR would run a restrictor plate unless required to. It would make more sense to just use a less powerful motor, which they weren't going to design from the ground up.
@@seth094978 but they weren't running NASCAR, they were running an endurance race. I recall reading earlier this year about the possibility to run at 550 hp, to reduce stress and pressure on moving parts to ensure 24H reliability.
Considering the gearbox malfunctioned after close 20H it might have been a good idea if they had run at less power, as they were pretty much building the car from the ground up anyway.

I'm super happy they kept the same firing order, V8 sound and cross plane crank, for that oh so sweet Nascar sound. Shoot I'd get into this racing series myself.
A 5.8l V8 with a flat plane crank would probably shake your eyeballs out of their sockets at high engine speeds. I know someone very briefly tried it for drag racing (I think Pro Stock) and they reported it was vibrating so badly they couldn't see the tach!
WEC is awesome. IMO WEC and IMSA are the best racing series out there right now.

Honestly, if Le Mans created a new class for stock cars, get some Aussies from V8 Supercars to drive too, I think it would do a lot to save NASCAR globally. I would love to see a more global audience for a sport with such humble beginnings.
I'll never get tired of just how mean thouse NASCAR engines sound. The sound of those flybys is definitely one of the biggest draws of NASCAR racing. I hope we get to see even more road racing with those crazy cars.

I still vividly remember my first flyby at a NASCAR race. Can't really describe the feeling, it's just so much "motor muscle" at breakneck speed. The roar of the engine is amazing.

So basically in the end Garage 56's car wasn't anymore a NASCAR car, rather an hybrid of a NASCAR and a GTE without restrictor plate on the engine.
And perhaps they should run in this configuration also back in the USA, provided that a version of the car with some of the "upgraded" feature should be available for sale!

Although they said they removed the "restrictor" (tapered spacer), the hp was significantly lower than the stock cars of 2014 (when they didn't run the restrictors). Obviously, its so it can run 24h.
I ran a comparison of how fast this car actually was in a straight line, and although it's significantly faster than the 3400 lb 670 hp current cars, it's significantly slower than the cars of the past:
100-180 mph
G56: 17.76 s
2014 Cup: 10.22 s
For comparison, Cadillac Hypercar: 10.79 s

I watched that run at LM last year and I can tell you now, you knew when it was coming because it was so loud! You could actually hear it coming off of Arnage on its way down to the Porsche curves
First time a watcher of Lemans because of this car. Now I'm a huge fan of the race.
That was the goal I believe. I am in "Nascar country", circle tracks all around but haven't watched a race since I was a kid, just not a fan of the repetitive turn left, straight, left straight driving. I love road courses however and motorsports. If Nascar had a 24hr race just once a year I wouldn't just tune in, I would drive out to watch.
As an F1 fan I like the fun of oval racing, but was a bit skeptical about this project. But it surely has proven me wrong in the best way possible. I'm genuinely amazed tbh
Hearing comments like this makes me happy. I was always about the indy car series until the pandemic hit and everything shut down. Then NASCAR started doing the virtual racing. It was the only thing going at the time so I watched it. Turns out it was an absolute blast. Then when NASCAR started real racing again I started enjoying it. It’s weird how things like that work. It’s certainly a different kind of racing and I’ve learned a lot about it and can appreciate it now.

I’m a huge F1 fan but I’m American, so that means I also have a soft spot for NASCAR. I’m loving the shift towards more road courses but this was a dream come true. Just the sound of it at LeMans was epic and made me proud as an American. It was almost a throwback to the old days at the same time.
I find it funny that folks think a professional race car team's engineers can't figure out how to build a car for another discipline. At the end of the day, it's all trying to go fast around a track.
@Anschutz270 yeah mate but this exceeded expectations. Things can always go wrong no matter how profound the teams are, I mean just look at mclaren honda from 2015 to 2017. We all appreciate the drivers and the teams behind it but it's not easy to build a quality race car
I was there last weekend and I can say that the G56 Nascar was the favorite car of the field. It was incredible, the sound was amazing, just like the Cadillacs, it looked so appart but so at home. This is the true spirit of Le Mans to me. I can hear it until now 👍

I’ve never been a NASCAR fan, but I’ve always respected it. My mother and father-in-law are mega NASCAR fans. I’ve always loved F1 and endurance. This car has made me obsessed. I religiously followed what they were doing during the race in the build up to it and cannot stop watching highlights of it after. This was the greatest promotion NASCAR is ever done, and they need to do this again. Love to see them work on a brake concept that gets it to work changes faster for them and then they will really be up there. So amazing.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED it to see a NASCAR like racecar drive at Le Mans, as the sound is something else.....giving me goosebumps

As someone said in another comment, NASCAR, as a governing body, should consider more road course racing because, in my humble opinion, it is actually closer to the moonshining runs of the sport's founders: they ran like hell away from the government men through twisty forest roads and at all times of the day in all kinds of weather. This needs to happen.

If it didn’t blow out its gearbox I wonder where it would have placed?? I think a big way they could improve the NASCAR design for a race like that is to make the car have all wheel drive. It will pull itself more to where you wanna go in and out of corners. And they need bigger brakes for stopping their bigger car.

A lot of people seem to be in agreement that they'd love to see this car race again, perhaps even in a series. My proposal is to add a NASCAR class to the Rolex 24 in Daytona. If we're ever going to actually see it happen, I feel like that's the most likely place. It's only a few weeks before the Daytona 500, so getting crew into town for it shouldn't be as big of a hassle as it might be anywhere else.
That is a damn good idea and of course.....the crowd goes wild!

As someone who lives close enough to Charlotte motor speed way, it’s a sound that gets olds very quick.

I was pretty disappointed at the limited amount of camera time this car got during the race. I was almost thinking they were purposely cutting away from it. However, you could always hear that engine! Amazing effort from the whole team.
I thought the same thing! Then again, the broadcast was only focusing on the HyperCars the whole time. You could tell the commentators wanted to see the Camaro.
It was a pity pass entry, zero need to watch it run in a class of 1.
Radio lemans gave it a good coverage. Though with the return of Ferrari to top class and the fairy tail story that brought it was hard to compete. More over the US stole the show with the story behind Cadillac, Gickenhaus… the last of the corvette’s…oh & that all female team…. So much drama this year. It’s not surprising it didn’t shine forth more.

I’ve Never watched Nascar but my XC team volunteered at a track. when the engines started running I was blown away. I Never knew car engines could get so loud and as they flew by you could feel the rumble throughout your body. 😵💀

Another thing that held them up was the safety car restarts. For the start, they were placed between the P2 and the GTE, but on restarts they had to drop behind the GTEs, and as the three SCs were all early in the race before the field spread itself over several laps, they were effectively being sent to the back of the race each time. But G56 is ultimately about putting on a show, and they certainly achieved that.
It seems the joy that that engineering team and drivers felt is akin to what NASCAR teams used to feel before they introduced restriction plates to the engine. (and by derivative the fans as well)

All this sounds like in reality NASCAR might be experimenting on expanding. I think they felt the pressure of Drive to Survive and how it boosted F1 popularity by a lot that they might be trying to evolve their sport too.
For example the steering wheel, the new tracks and the experimenting a little here and there with the car. Something feels like they might just be looking to turn the sport into something else on the future.
They're absolutely throwing stuff at the wall till it sticks, and I'm all here for it. 6-7 years ago, NASCAR started to feel stale. Great drivers, and that generation car was a fan favorite, but nothing has really properly shaken up the sport for a while. NASCAR was on the dangerous precipice of either deciding to double down on what they'd been doing and continue to watch viewership and revenue decline, or looking at ways to organically regrow that support while finding a way to repackage stock car racing for a new generation. They've made a lot of changes, big and small, in the time since; some have been questionable but they keep what works and adapt from there. The number of road courses on the schedule every season has been growing slowly, and they're discussing city road circuits now as well. Hell, they ran stock cars on a full dirt track a few years back. It's good to see the direction they're headed
Earing the Camaro on track was fun and exciting as hell, everyone had a dumb smile when the car was flying by as the Cadillac too. This cars brought back my chilhood after this hybrid race world we have now. This wild engines made me feel happy only on it´s sound. Really great entry for this centenary race, hope to enjoy it again.

You've got it backwards.........EV's need to be banned from racing, hybrids should be too, but at least majority of power from a hybrid race engine will be from the internal combustion engine with a little electric assist. I'd rather not have hybrid or full ev but unfortunately hybrid Cup engines will eventually be used. Part of the intoxication of racing is hearing the glorious sound of a V8 racing engine and the smell of high octane racing fuel racing engines burn!
The Cadillacs sounded amazing. Pure V8 filth at 110dB.
I miss the old track configuration without the chicanes in the back straight. Kinda fun seeing this experiment though!

This for some reason makes me proud of NASCAR for bringing an American car to try out at Le Mans. Venture out to other motorsports. Sucks they didn't "technically" finish. But trial and error, they oculd become a true contender. Thanks for this informative video.
