    The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

    “Somewhere” became a staple in their live performances. Over the years their rendition became more dramatic than this earlier performance. Diana eventually included a spoken passage that reached out to all generations, religious beliefs and races. This is how The Supremes became ambassadors of civil rights in sparkles and glamour. I saw them singing this live on a few occasions and it was always gut wrenching, especially when they harmonized. Perfection from the number one American group of all time, male or female.

    • @mattc2094
      @mattc2094 3 роки тому +2

      Wow, you saw them live! That must have been amazing, when/where was it? I just discovered the supremes last year, and I have to say I’m mesmerised.... such talent in all 3... they were talented, glamorous, barrier breakers.... and yes this song definitely had so much heart. I had no idea this song was thought of in the civil rights movement, but indeed they were great examples of beautiful black women

    • @RP-oe3uq
      @RP-oe3uq 3 роки тому +3

      Matt C
      Diana and the Supremes brought the civil rights movement to the song. On their TCB special, Diana quotes Martin Luther King in a plea for equality in a spoken verse of the song.
      I saw the original line up twice and then I saw the group with Cindy three times.
      The first time I saw them was at Blinstrub’s in Boston in early 1966 when “I hear a symphony” was high on the charts. I had made my way to the stage’s staircase where I sat mesmerized. Diana came over to me, took me by the hand and brought me on stage to sing “Where did our love go?” with the group. I’m still amazed whenever I think of that. That was the first of many up close, on stage experiences with Diana. I have met her several times over the years. I brought her a chair to sit on when she sang “My Man” in her first solo concert ever. I have pictures of me dancing to “Love Hangover” with her during her Broadway smash “An Evening With Diana Ross”. I even walked down the street with her by Brown University and we talked about “The Force Behind the Power” album. I had gone to see Mary’s club debut back in the 80s and she was supreme! Diana was in the audience supporting her and they sang a bit of “Someday....” at Diana’s table. Diana didn’t go on stage. The stage belonged to Mary. On and on I could go.....But it all started with me singing with the original line up.

    • @mattc2094
      @mattc2094 3 роки тому +1

      @@RP-oe3uq you sang with the original supremes trio?

    • @RP-oe3uq
      @RP-oe3uq 3 роки тому +3

      Yes, I did sing with the original group! What an honor and such a special memory. I wrote you about that experience when I just replied to you on the “Love is like an itch” thread. Enjoy!
      You sound like such a fan. It’s great to know that they still capture the attention of new fans after all these years! But as you said, Diana was the star. I’m not minimizing the role of the other ladies but facts are facts. I saw Diana evolve as the star of the group as she led the group to hit after hit earning the same amount of money as Mary, Florence and Cindy despite all the extra work she did.

Even if some have beaten the Supremes records it doesn't matter since they don't have staying power as Spice Girls and The Supremes 😊 Spice Girls were with the Beatles in power and beat a few records they had too and tied them. @@final1fantasy Lol in a kind way that makes 0 sense. The Supremes are my 2nd favourite girl group by talent and all of that greatness but even in the girl group list of best selling and etc they aren't even in the top 10 for record sales/etc which is a huge crime i'd say. They are legends and have amazing songs. Spice girls are the #1 Girl group of ALL time not by my opinion and love for them it's the worldwide records of achievements. They are the female Beatles power wise and popularity wise. #1 male grouo are the Beatles. Spice girls scored 9 #1 singles. All singles on their debut album #1, that's the 1st in history to happen. They matched many Beatles records, wrote their own songs and actually danced, they won awards including five Brit Awards, three American Music Awards, four Billboard Music Awards, three MTV Europe Music Awards, one MTV Video Music Award and three World Music Awards. They became as huge as the Beatles that everyone marketed them for products and I can't think of any other girl groups with that unless it's just a couple of items.
      Like them or not most people know the group and all of the girls names. I don't know anyone in any group usually except The Spice girls and Diana Ross and The Supremes. Most people just know Diana's name in the group. Spice girls are always listed as the #1 Girl group of all time for ALL of their unbeatable accomplishments. They Did a 4 minute performance at the 2012 Olympics and dominated ITunes and that was made way after they ruled the earth as Spiceworld from 1996 to 2001. The Supremes are huge but the spice girls are massive. I love them both so much. ❤ Spice girls are legends too and have shown that they wear the crown whenever they want it by simply coming back to own it. It's proof you can look up and not my opinion as a big fan. In 2019 they hit #1 TOUR in june! They beat the Rolling Stones, Lady Gaga, Elton John, Ed Sheeran, and the rest! Paramount pictures is working on a movie for them. I hope they do movies for The Supremes too. I want many cool things for both. They are both very different groups let's remember that. Awesome in their own individual way for what they do and offer. Thank you ✌

    The Supremes were an American girl group and a premier act of Motown Records during the 1960s. Founded as the Primettes in Detroit, Michigan, in 1959, the Supremes were the most commercially successful of Motown's acts and the most successful American vocal band, with 12 number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100. Most of these hits were written and produced by Motown's main songwriting and production team, Holland-Dozier-Holland. It is said that their breakthrough made it possible for future African-American R&B and soul musicians to find mainstream success. Billboard ranked the Supremes as the 16th greatest Hot 100 artist of all time.
    Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Diana Ross, and Betty McGlown, the original members, were all from the Brewster-Douglass public housing project in Detroit. They formed the Primettes as the sister act to the Primes (with Paul Williams and Eddie Kendricks, who went on to form the Temptations). Barbara Martin replaced McGlown in 1960, and the group signed with Motown the following year as the Supremes. Martin left the act in early 1962, and Ross, Ballard, and Wilson continued as a trio.
    During the mid-1960s, the Supremes achieved mainstream success with Ross as lead singer and Holland-Dozier-Holland as its songwriting and production team. In 1967, Motown president Berry Gordy renamed the group Diana Ross & the Supremes, and replaced Ballard with Cindy Birdsong. In 1970, Ross left to pursue a solo career and was replaced by Jean Terrell, and the group reverted the name to the Supremes again. During the mid-1970s, the lineup changed with Lynda Laurence, Scherrie Payne and Susaye Greene, joining until the group, after 18 years from its foundation, disbanded in 1977. Source Wikipedia

    For some reason it bothers me that they are not equally spread, Mary and Florence are closer together then it seems that Diana is separated,. I know it's petty haha but I noticed things really bad that are not centered

      Barry Gordo is working that camera and excluding Florence and Mary. And he also turned 3:44 down the mics on Florence and Mary. Thank goodness this is the version where DR does not give her soliloquy.

    🌟 Hi Ed Sullivan uploaders. Connie Francis my favorite is featured on the new Disney Movie Cruella. Please upload my requests from her now to grab more views while she is currently in the 2021 spotlight with children to adults ☺ I see you are posting a lot of The Supremes even more often right after Mary passed so please do it for Connie. I request Found myself a guy with the entire part. Frank Sinratra talks and then introduces her, they are friends and have the same birthday by the way! 😊 It ends with them hugging which is so sweet. The other upload I really wanna see is the Winchester Cathedral performance with a few other songs in that one performance. It's very appreciated. Thank you friends ❤

    Dianna Ross!

  • @jackjules7552
    @jackjules7552 2 роки тому +2

    After Florence was given the boot, Ross stoled this song for herself only. When the Supremes did this song again on Supremes's 1968 TCB special, Ross took the stage by herself and sang this song by herself without Mary and Cindy on stage with her. Ross took what was a signature group song and took it for herself. How blatant could Ross have been in wanting everything for herself? The whole TV special was designed to let the public know that Motown did not care about the Supremes anymore and that Ross was all that mattered to Gordy.

      Are you serious? So Diana controlled who sang what and with who in the group not the manager Berry Gordy...you just hate Diana Ross...btw you sound just like Mary when she was complaining on TV saying "Diane always wanted everything for herself?" lol

    Love Diana Ross the Boss. She always had that "It" factor: that made the Supremes "pop," Ms. Ross went on to have 6 # 1 songs on her own. 🔥🔥🔥

    wait so they have no mics? So everybody knew they’re lipsyncing?

    • @youyong28
      @youyong28 3 роки тому +1

      They weren't lip sinking. The mics are overhead. It's been said that Diana's was closer to her so that her voice could be heard more prominently.

      @@youyong28 actually, Mary and Flo were lip synching to a prerecorded track here. You can see it at around 1:41 when Flo ends the word she’s mouthing before she actually completed the note. Often, when you see those two without mics on the Ed Sullivan Show, they pre-recorded their backing vocals. I’ve seen a picture from their “Always” performance rehearsal where Mary and Cindy were backstage recording the vocals they would lip synch to later on the actual performance. Diana does have an overhead boom mic here though, and often did when they were on Sullivan.
