The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

That's a nice performance and in very clear quality compared to other releases of this performance video on UA-cam. Diana, Mary and Cindy look great in those dresses.
Beautiful ladies !
Flo Cindy Mary beautiful..Diana - horrid!
@@Dion_Mustard what have you accomplished here ?
@@benjaminjackson9449 i don't need to "accomplish" anything, i am merely writing the truth of the situation.
diana ross, as talented as she is, is a horrible person,
@@Dion_Mustard I don't know her personally, so I can't make those judgments. As an entertainer, she is way up there among the best. I've seen her live several times and I can verify she puts on one hell of a show.
Diana Ross' voice is so beautiful. I see why she was made lead. Her voice is not big but it has clear as a bell resonance.
SHE SOUNDS GREAT LIVE ..
If I'm being honest, that high-pitched nazalness is driving me up the wall in that song "Always", but towards the end of the song when she drops down into her chest voice she's kicking **** (at least to my ears) as the Supremes always did.
@@sarnahudane4583 , even in those days she sounded beyond bomb ass when she reached into her lower registers ,e.g. the Mike Douglas show when singing "Make Someone Happy"
Sounds big to me. Amazing voice.
@@mojo0307 her range isn’t super huge but she has really good vocal control and dynamics. She is a really skilled singer, often doesn’t get the credit she deserves as a vocalist.
Ms. Wilson was a natural beauty, and looked good well into her final days. RIP.
I would be a lying fool to dispute the words of the dear David-of-Richardson.
Three of the most beautiful, sexy, singers ever!!!! Rest In Peace Mary Wilson and condolences 💐 to your family.
Indeed, these girls not only had bucket loads of talent, but also bucket loads of beauty & glamour... we’ll miss you Mary
THE MORE I watch The Supremes performances from decades ago in all their exquisite elegance and glamour, the more DISGUSTED I am by TODAY'S female performers and their filthy and vulgar presentations.
...GOOOOOD MORNING!!
RIP Mary Wilson
Your sentiment is both felt-and-supported, dear Nope nope.
That Berry knew what he was doing! That girl has got a mesmerizingly beautiful voice that can be showcased in so many different ways! She shows that right here. That's why all those R&B singers couldn't touch her, because that's all that they could sing.
You are watching the legendary SUPREMES, a GROUP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As i RECALL, Diane was one of them! Are you familiar with the pronoun, "them???' THEY are not a "her!" There were three!
@@kurtsupreme Are you aware that Gordy changed all the major groups' names to their single Star's name, such as Martha and the Vandellas, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. Therefore, it was always about Diana Ross and then the Supremes.
@@petebrowne9918 Oh, really? Are YOU aware that it was ALWAYS Martha and The Vandellas? He merely added her last name. The only groups whose names were changed were THE SUPREMES and THE MIRACLES. Diane was Berry's lover and Smokey was Berry's vice-president of Motown. No other group at Motown (Four Tops, Temptations, Madvelettes, etc.) had their names changed. You need to get your facts straight and knock off the "Diane Ross revisionist history." Berry Gordy was in love with Diane...........America was in love with THE SUPREMES as a GROUP! There was no concept of a "Diana" Ross until Berry Gordy pushed her forward and stuffed her down our throats. If you loved The Supremes, you had to take Diane way out front because that is how they were being presented..............it was not OUR choice! I loved Diane back then as ONE of The Supremes, not THE Supreme..........that was Berry Gordy's doing to prepare for her solo career and your Diane Ross revisionist history plays right into his hands. Do you see how you were manipulated? That's why I refer to them as SILLY "Ross as a solo act" fans...............just like lambs to the slaughter..........mindless! Diane was the star of The Supremes; however, THE SUPREMES. as a group, was the main event, not ever Diane. The Supremes were just a better act than Diane EVER was as a solo performer. The Supremes had peaked and Berry was moving into film production and Diane was going to be his star; so, he changed the name of the group to get her name out there..............the rest is history.
@@kurtsupreme if you can read well, I said single major Star. Those groups that you named didn't really have that, NOR we're they ever big as Diana Ross, with the Supremes. Motown was a hole in the wall minority black-owned business that Diana Ross really put on the map and created a unique sound for it. Furthermore, if you listen to most of those hits, Diana Ross was the only one singing on them at a certain point, even when Flo was in the group. Even love child and someday we'lll be together, is exclusively Diana Ross, and you folks never noticed the difference. Therefore, Diana Ross's solo career began long before The Supremes ever disbanded. So you see, it was always and will always be about Diana Ross. 🙄
@@petebrowne9918 Oh, my!!!! You should work for the Diane Ross Propaganda Department as her publicist! Lord, can you ever recite the revisionist history! The Temptations and Four Tops WERE MAJOR groups. NO groups, other than The Beatles were as big as The Supremes; so, there is no comparison to other groups. Motown developed The Supremes and applied the Motown sound to them as well as the other acts...........not the other way around. Yes, the success of THE SUPREMES did help to build the company...........but, other acts were also very successful. The Supremes were THREE identifiable women regardless of who was singing on the recordings. Yes, we were sometimes duped into thinking that The Andantes were Mary and Flo (Cindy); but, in performance, it was all three who sang those songs. Also, they were produced, marketed, promoted, performed, and remembered as SUPREMES songs. I hate to inform you that there are people who hear "Up The Ladder to The Roof" and "Stoned Love" who think that Jean is Diane. So, it wasn't just Mary and Flo's voices that could be interchanged...........Diane's as well. It was always about Diane with Berry and Diane.............but, the American PUBLIC loved THE SUPREMES as a group. All the revisionist history in the world won't change the reality of what was even though the silly "Ross as a solo act" fans want to change the facts with their own perceptions of reality.
My God DIANA in that opening is stunning. Legendary
My God! You are watching the legendary SUPREMES and all you can talk about is DIANE??????????? As I recall, she was ONE of them!!!!!
@@kurtsupreme you really want to go there ? Lol
@@jonzakar5000 Yes, I really want to go there! You are talking about the most successful American vocal group in musical history. You probably weren't even born when The Supremes ruled the radio air waves. Probably, all your life, you were exposed to Diane as a solo act and you missed the main event................something bigger and better than Diane, Motown's premier act, The Legendary SUPREMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Diane walked out of that group as a superstar and , thanks to Berry Gordy, was able to extend her career; however, with 12 number 1 hits BY THE GROUP, she was never able to exceed the success of THE SUPREMES as a solo act! So, don't even TRY to come at me with your "Diane Ross Revisionist History!!!!"
@@kurtsupreme calm down Tiger, i was refering to the beautiful opening of that vidéo. Dianas supremes era is my fave era of her career. Im 24 BUT i live in detroit, so do that math. Mary was stunningly beautiful and had a excellent voice but was too angry and whatever else to focus on and promote her assets, instead fixated solely on that era. Flo was had an awesome voice but like Mary didn't have the talent to pull it all together and use it for what all it was worth. Diana stood out. She POPS off any screen in this era. Her voice was unique and instantly recognizable. Her stage presence was electric . Even her speaking voice was mezmerising, her look was impeccable
They were genius as a whole but nothing without Diana. Fact
@@jonzakar5000 I agree with a lot of what you said; however, I did not perceive Mary as angry..........although, she had every reason to be. Florence had talent; although, it wasn't as great as Diane's..........plus Flo had demons that she couldn't control. The one thing that I would add is that Diane was not much without them, either.......THE SUPREMES were the main event and Diane, as a solo act, just like Mary, is a remnant of that legacy. Berry Gordy and Motown worked very hard to extend Diane's career as a solo act after The Supremes...........be careful.........don't get pulled into their "revisionist history." Diane might have been all of those things that you mentioned at one time with The Supremes.............not now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is my first time really hearing Cindy Birdsong. Not bad. She aint no Flo but not bad.
Once Cindy became more comfortable in the group, the three of them did approximate a good harmonic blend as close to the original as they could.

The Ed Sullivan show it was a tree just to see The Supremes three women of color am I beautiful and talented. Mary Wilson you will be missed and you will never be forgotten you were the last of the original Supremes to stay together with the group.

I🤎❤this its my first time hearing it
Watching this you realize what a cruel thing it was for Ross to say Birdsong "never really was a Supreme." Not only do her harmonies sound sublime here with Wilson, but she's a beuatiful presence on stage.
I think you will find it was Mary Wilson who said it and tried to stop Cindy from being at the induction to the hall of fame for the Supremes
@@richardrichard9631 who really..but wat really shows how Karma is real .not bein included in rnrhof
@@richardrichard9631 Diana says it in an interview with Oprah, which you can watch right here in UA-cam. Not Mary.
@@Branner I think in that Oprah interview, Ross was referring to Cindy not being an "official Supreme" in the legal sense, as Birdsong's contact with Motown in 1970 was as an individual, and not the group. I agree Ross' whole "she was a Supreme, but not really a Supreme" was jumbled and inarticulate, but she was trying to convey the uncertainty all three women were feeling at the time Ross was leaving the group in 1970. I don't think Ms Ross was trying to slight Cindy in any way. It's well documented the two stayed close friends throughout their lives.

Just another reason why this Uncle CANNOT ever get these beautiful ladies known unto man as "THE SUPREMES" and their handsomely beautiful host ED SULLIVAN (who aired from 1948 all the way to 1971) out of his mind !!! Cindy vocal is so loud on this and I love it she was to shy to sing lead a lot
Diana thinking she's on Laugh In.
nice song

Never liked Diana Ross at this point. She had completely taken over the group and she had lost the Soul quality in her voice. She became more "pantomime" as I call it. It was essentially just Diana and 2 backup singers. Mary and Cindy (and poor Flo) had been dismissed when in fact Mary had huge potential by this point. By 1968-69 Berry was on a mission and he knew Diana was his way forward out of Hitsville and into mega stardom. As talented as she was, Diana Ross at this point was a nasty piece of work. She virtually washed her hands of Mary and had no intention of looking back. Some would say she was just looking out for herself and getting the most out of life, I say different.
RIP Flo and Mary. You will never be forgotten
Diana Ross was picked to sing lead, because she had a suitable commercial type singing voice. The other girls are in a very different category, Flo indeed was special.
@@paul8926 and by doing so destroying both mary and flo's confidence, and indeed careers.
Mary and Flo should have been given more lead - if not on albums - on stage. but Ms Ross took over all that, even demanding her own separate dressing room and entrance on stage. one other example is when Diana took lead on Flo's part in the song People. once that happened Flo had had enough.
DR never had that _soulful_ voice like Aretha Franklin, Etta James or Gladys Knight, but more of a pop-like quality in the vein of Dionne Warwick and the Fifth Dimension. BG positioned DR to become the group's lead when _Where Did Our Love Go_ became their first big pop (crossover) hit, the dynamic would change within the group. As the story goes with groups, whether male or female, there will always be some sort of ego and favoritism amongst the members. She was marketable and she knew how to _sell_ a song and put on a _show_ to be honest, that's why they were renamed to _Diana Ross & the Supremes_ because it became evident that she was the star, and Motown was getting a lot more bread for two acts instead of one (similar to Martha & the Vandellas, Jr. Walker & the All-Stars and Smokey Robinson & the Miracles) when they played at expensive and exclusive clubs like the Copacabana. Flo and Mary helped start the group after the fourth member Barbara left and their friendship towards the end of the '60s would never be what it was prior to them joining Motown. BG knew DR was the _real_ star from Day One. And it's completely unfair that Flo had endured everything she went through (being raped by a schoolmate at knifepoint.) prior to joining Motown and everything she went through after Motown (bankruptcy, poverty, abusive marriage, death).
@@DavidRichardson95 Good points but it's irrelevant who has the more marketable voice ..there is another way to deal with that considering it leads to tension...you have "the star" of the group and you have the other singers who are just as important..you give "the star" the majority of lead BUT you also give some lead to the other girls (such was the case in Destiny's Child with Michelle and Kelly hence they did not fall out with Beyonce). Mary and Flo should have been given chance to stand at the front on stage and perform to the crowd who loved them as much as Diana.
The mistake Berry Gordy made was giving Diana full control in every respect In the end even Flo and Mary were silenced during interviews. And once you give "the star" her own dressing room and entrance onto stage separate from the others , then you will ultimately piss off the other members and create major tensions (hence why Flo became so angry and hurt!).
It's unfair regardless of who is more marketable and in my opinion Mary and Flo had good lead voices HENCE should have been given some leads.
This is a very contentious issue among supremes fans... I personally love Diana for her voice and looks, but I also agree Flo and Mary didn’t get as much attention or opportunity as they deserved, they both had lovely voices
Thanks great music 🌹🌹🌹

RIP Mary my fàvourite and special supreme

Aren''t you about 60 yrs late....
Wigs, Partials, and Make-up goes a long way, but it still doesn't change what a person is.
huh?
Their performance of this song starts off beautifully with that close up of Diana singing tenderly while caressing each word. When the beat segues from ballad to mid-tempo the performance sill works. But when they segue to a rock/pop/funk sound they lose me. They ventured into that territory on their “Rodgers and Hart” album and that was a successful and masterful outing both artistically and commercially. It doesn’t work here and they ruin the spirit of the song. Diana’s ad-libs towards the song’s end are ridiculous. I know what they were going for but I didn’t like it then and I don’t like it now. This is the only performance of a standard by The Supremes that I never liked as far back as when I had first seen it on Sullivan. They should have maintained the ballad and mid-tempo pace and it would have been a heavenly performance.
It is a heavenly performance.
Wow, its always amazing to listen to and see these exceptionally beautiful talented women bringing to life the meritorious but stale and otherwise staid music of Irving Berlin. Certainly many things are better today but nothing has even come close to surpassing the internationally still famous music and striking elegant presence of the Supremes. Another amazing big band performance by the Supremes was at the Copa especially the masterful rollicking, joyous "Enjoy Yourself " punctuated by a solo verse by the gorgeous Mary who showcases her unusual but interesting and very nice and charming somewhat deeper voice- very unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any video of that performance but the audience was obviously quite enthused.
Dianna and Mary Wilson great out fit. Rock on
