- The Supremes perform their 8th #1 hit "You Keep Me Hangin' On" and "Somewhere" from West Side Story at The Hollywood Palace on October the 22nd, 1966.
This performance features the original (and most popular) lineup of The Supremes:
From left to right:
- Florence Ballard
- Mary Wilson
- Diana Ross
"You Keep Me Hangin' On" was first released 10 days before this performance on October 12th 1966 with "Remove This Doubt" as its b-side. The song rose to #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 (called the US Pop Singles Chart at the time) and also managed top spot on the US R&B Singles Chart. The song was written and produced by Holland-Dozier-Holland who had written and produced all the group's hits up to then also the song was put on the group's 1967 album entitled "The Supremes Sing Holland-Dozier-Holland".

"Somewhere" is a song from the musical West Side Story. Written by Leonard Bernstein the song has been covered by many. The Supremes not only sing it here but recorded it for their "Theres A Place For Us" album (which is named after the first line in the song) and also had it as part of their live set performing it on their 1965 live album "The Supremes At The Copa" and also sang the song live in Paris in 1965 as part of the Motortown Revue.

Also, it became clear that Barry Gordy favored Diana (or Diane her real name) over the other girls. Florence gave the group their name, the Supremes. How would you feel if you worked to build something and then wasn't given credit for it? Alcohol truly is not the answer but I can understand why Flo felt that way she did. And yes, Flo was lovely! All the girls were which is what made them Supreme. Even though there was turmoil going on among them, they STILL put out good quality music.

The problem is misinformation. Many commenters and bloggers not born in the Supremes' heyday, are getting information from other bloggers, instead of getting information from Mary Wilson's 1986 book, or Diana Ross' memoirs, 1993.

I saw The Supremes debut on The Ed Sullivan Show on December 27, 1964! I was ten years old; it was my sister's birthday, she was thirteen!
This was years before all this garbage on You Tube today!
It was a about three, beautiful talented ladies we had never seen before (but heard on records) long before any rifts or cracks appeared.
It was about the THREE of them then, and they sounded wonderful together. And, at that time, all three sang lead in yours and performances.
Producers find winning formulas; in this case, Ross' sound was more marketable. That doesn't mean that Miss Ballard should have allowed her anger and belligerence to get the best of her.
No matter what people continue to say (along with misinformation) Miss Ballard messed up. That's all it is to it.

My favorite all time girl group at their finest. Flo was stunning and Mary was beautiful as well. Diana has the voice I measured all female artist in the pop field. Many may have been more powerful voices but none captivated me like Diana's voice. (Only Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan and Karen Carpenter have this gift as well. Just my opinion.) "You keep me hangin' on" might be their most popular hit (Certainly my favorite!) but "Somewhere" was masterfully done. Another non-hit Supremes gem is "He holds his own". They are simply the G.O.A.T. girls group!

+Ernie Lazo I could be wrong but I think when they sang live they could not control the volumne of the mic's which is probably the reason Flo and Mary had to share 1 mic. Diane was afraid of being drowned out. When they recorded records, I think the mic's were turned down. Listen to My world is empty without you, and You can't hurry love. You could barely hear Flo and Mary on those records vs Baby love or Where did our love go.

On their final hit " Someday We'll Be Together"(1969) Johnny Bristol did the male backup vocals and Maxine and Julia Walters did the rest! Rattled???? Hardly! Try Not Bothered!

Diana is Ross is the Boss. The Supremes would have never been the #1 girl group with #12 number one singles without Diana as lead singer. Diana even went on to get 6 #1 singles as a solo artist. Mary and Flo were great as well. They all were Supreme in their own individual ways.

They were starters... the hair cut now called "angular" is the Sassoon -- and the Supremes helped put Sassoon on the map with Twiggy and Edie. The Supremes were not a fluke -- they were destined to be, to represent, to meet, to break up, to survive, to inspire, to triumph and reign forever -- The "super duper" Supremes!

Back around 2011, at work myself and some young millennials coworkers watched this on UA-cam. They were very impressed, and they all kept asking me about "that tall girl on the left." They all picked out Florence as their favorite.

Florence was just absolutely beautiful in such a classy and understated way. No overdone facial expressions. Mary was so lovely in such a cool and unassuming way. Diana...on the other hand.....I understand her hamming it up, as she was the unofficial, designated 'Lead' of the group. I have enjoyed their music for 43 years....since their very first hit as The Supremes. Always wished that we could've experienced Flo and Mary as leads on a few of those 'supreme' iconic hits. But I have to admit.......I had heard and enjoyed Diana in all of her glory, so much over the years prior to her solo career; that when she did finally go solo....I had heard enough of her. I did of course, love her work in the film/soundtrack for "Lady Sings The Blues," but that's because I have been an almost life-long fan of the late, great Billie Holiday. No offense intended to Ms. Ross...just speaking the truth for me.

In other words, was that necessary to tell someone who belong to a group, you are not wanted. People have differences at times, but what about ones feelings. This is so wrong! These three ladies with such unique and beautiful faces are still The Supremes.
