- The Supremes appeared on the canadian TV show "Luncheon Date" hosted by Elwood Glover. The trio discusses the previous night concert at the O'Keefe Centre, how they got together, Motown Records, and the style of their music, which has switched from 3-part harmony to the new sound of Ballard and Wilson singing back-up to Ross’s lead. They touch on the subject of money - their one-hundred-dollar-a-week allowance, the cost of their gowns, and finally how success has affected their lives. The show was aired on 21st June 1966.

Mary answered the questions with the most intellect imo. Diane was nervous and didn't want to say the wrong thing. Flo was cool, laid back but honest.

I believe it. I have read that Gordy constantly nit-picked over any and every mistake she made. He put a LOT of pressure on her; so stories about her being on the "bitchy" side back then would make sense. Imagine being in your early 20's and have so much riding on your performances. Oh...and the boss is also your lover so there is even more pressure. Not like she could call her boyfriend and vent about the boss.
In many interviews Ross tries to much to sound and seem intellectual and fails big time.Mary and Flo interview so easy and gracious

I love this , hearing Mary and Flo answering questions instead of Diana answering all the questions.
Some of the comments below about Flo, Mary and Diana are just insane. We're talking about a group - of teenage girls really - that were at the top of the charts some 50 years ago! And yet the insults and vitriol flung at one Supreme or another make it sound as if they're politicians or still relevant pop artists. We didn't know any of these people personally at the time, and we still don't know who they are. We don't know what they felt, what challenges they faced, or how they coped with being international stars at the time when you could count black female superstars on one hand. But we do know their music and for that alone they should be accorded some respect.
Florence was just as beautiful and gorgeous as Mary was. Good looks, class and dignified.

It’s the unit that the world fell in love with. I think all three ladies are attractive and stylish. They all were obviously talented, otherwise they wouldn’t be a topic today. Random, but you know what I think guys.... I think Diana was made the lead singer because of her high pitch sweet Judy Garland like voice that fit perfectly in this time period. As you can hear, Florance’s voice sounds more southern and more Aretha Franklin like. Definitely not a 1960s time period voice. She was singing in the wrong era and I feel she would’ve made it BIG if she were a singer in the late 1970s. What do you think???

Actually, I think the male interviewer was kind of sweet on Florence. Back in those days, when a guy LIKED a girl, he would gently tease her about something, to get her attention. You'll notice the guy asked Florence to move in closer, then as the interview progressed, he began looking directly at Florence while asking questions. Flo seemed a bit startled and unprepared for that, and notice Diana began looking a bit put out and irritated. He had a big crush on Flo, I think, and judging by their looks, both Diana and Florence realized it.

Flo would be considered skinny nowadays! I think she looks just fine. I saw Mary's gown collection, when she brought them to Seattle, and I couldn't believe how small those gowns were for all three of them. Even the gowns that Cindy wore were small, even though she didn't look like a stick on TV. TV really did add a lot of weight back in the 1960's

Florence was stacked, truly beautiful.
I remember all the stories year in year out, my mom use to share with me about, the Motown greats she grew up with, to this day, it never gets old. Motown could, have marketed Flo solo career if, they really wanted too. The woman could, sing, she had a somewhat, of a soft earth tone voice, could carry a melody, had range, style, & class. She always, seem to stand out yet low-key, within the group, most definitely she was underrated as a singer, and didn't get her due recognition. She seem to be an old soul, and a home body, absolutely family, wife & mother material. The interviewer was disrespectful towards, her concerning her weight. You could, tell it made her feel uncomfortable, but she handled herself with humour & class. Her body type is voluptuous, I would say hourglass shape, the idiot interviewer is judging her, by the white man's standard of what a woman's weight should, be. Oh foolish white man, your standards need not applied here, Flo was a natural beauty, looking like a snack, & diana, boney as my butt crack! Lol. I'm out!

I read that an offer was made to her for solo albums after she was released from the Supremes. Unfortunately, Florence did not have an entertainment attorney to negotiate it for her. If she had, she probably would have gotten better money and more perks that could have benefited her long-range career. Unfortunately, he handled the first one by herself (big mistake) and when finally did get an attorney to renegotiate, he turned out to be a crook who stole her settlement (even bigger mistake).

Their compensation, a measly $100 a week, was characterized as an "allowance," as if they were little kids. It showed the reign Daddy Gordy had on his girls. You can bet the Beatles didn't receive "allowances" from Capitol Records in the 60's.

Motown Records in 1965, was independent, the only black owned record company in history. In this era of segregation and Jim Crow, Motown didn't have the money that Capitol Records had! (A white company). There were radio stations that didn't play early Motown songs....all he could pay the group members was 100.00 a week! Beatles? I remember their first hit songs (1964) were on Vee Jay, a black label. The songs success was to be a windfall for the company! Suddenly they were recording on Capitol! Racism reared its ugly head....yeah, I bet the Beatles WEREN'T getting an "an allowance of 100.00 a week"!

The Motown deals were pretty much STANDARD with unproven acts: Low royalties; one year contracts with the company owning the option for SIX-MORE YEARS. This was their ALLOWANCE, so that they would actually HAVE a little money at the end of their run.Standard.

Thank you for the video! At first I was excited to get a sense of their true personalities and chemistry together. But after just hearing interviews in which she talked about being pressured about her weight by Berry Gordy, I feel outraged that Florence endured it publicly, as well. She was a great beauty & according to both Diane & Mary, she wasn't a good singer, not even a decent singer, her only benefit was, she was good for her "look", as to "them", she shared a similar look to Flo & she could hold up her soprano part in the harmonies, but she had a very, very weak, wimpy sounding voice, that had no "lead" appeal whatsoever.

Extremely talented women. I always admired their class. I was a young boy back then but I knew something about the Supremes was just that-supreme. Their songs were and always will be a big part of my life. Sorry they had to endure interviews like this. They brought so much joy to so many people. I feel fortunate to have been able to live in a time when they were making music. I miss those days!!

Thanks for posting this. This is an excellent interview - not because of the interviewer - but because it reveals the three girls' distinct personalities. It's how many of us remember them from back then, especially if you saw them live. One good thing about this interview occurs when he actually asks musical questions - about harmony and unison, etc., which Mary offers a good answer to.
I have loved Diana Ross since the very beginning. Her voice and her kindness and her beauty. She is,a rare blessing to this sad old earth.

Vincent50 Although I think Florence was nice to look at and I'm a woman there's nothing wrong with Diana. Being skinny isn't the problem its when you look sickly but its not the same thing as being 'regular' skinny. Diana filled out as she got older. While Flo had the fuller figure you have to be more mindful of what you eat because those body types tend to gain weight easily. Pregnancy is another thing because most women gain weight as well. In a way its good Diana started out slim and filled out later on as opposed to being curvy and being much heavier. It really boils down to genetics but I don't like body shaming. I think Diana said in an interview that she was stressed and overworked so she wasn't eating as much.

Yes I agree. Florence hung in there in this interview but seems she was going through a lot then but I love watching her because she's so interesting to see. She was more like the girl next door type and that's something the boss wanted to change about her and couldn't.
The interviewer is typical of the 1960's in both style and substance. Florence, Mary and Diana are not girls. They are women. Florence Ballard is the most interesting of the three you can tell she has a powerful testimony but for whatever the reason is keeping a lid on it.

Honestly, I’d really admire how Florence’s responding to that rude interviewer, she really owned him and that old yt man shouldn’t even be bothered to ask out that. I honestly admire how honest and unbothered she basically is and she’s so sassy and “WE” “WE” stan a black woman who stands up for herself instead of being trashed. Notice at 4:52 after he comments about Diana's 'overeating problem" and Mary says "I eat just enough, I'll say" Florence squirms nervously and then clears her throat. This indicates to me that his question was kind of opening a wound within the group about their weight..namely Florence's and her throat grunt was a defence reflex as it was a contentious issue with them. This interview really shows the underlying issues that were cropping up with them and what would later happen to the group with Florence being tossed out . Just reading the body language and the looks from Ross in response to Mary/Florence and the interviewer's questions is very revealing.

Especially since Flo's response as to why Diana is thinner than her was that she eats more than Diana. That insinuates that Diana doesn't eat which adds to the friction that was brewing between Florence and Diana. Diana wanted all the control and wanted it at the expense of Mary and Flo. Flo would retaliate by saying and doing things to spite Diana. The time they performed My World is Empty Without You on the Sammy Davis Jr Show, Flo's mic was actually on and she enjoyed drowning out Diana with her projected voice. Diana responded by deliberately standing in front of Flo, blocking her from the TV camera. There was a time when Diana's mic cut off and she walked over and snatches Mary's out her hand.
Flo discovered or maybe a better word is founder of the supremes but to start a group and carry a group is two different animals. With Flo at lead they might have achieved about as much success as the dixie cups (one hit wonder) then fade into obscurity and end up looking for work at woolworths Berry out of loyalty to Flo and Mary relentless work ethic kept them on but he was adamant as far making Diana the centerpiece of the band no matter what

Don Hawkins I never said that asking her to move closer was rude. His jokes about her difference in weight was somewhat rude. You must've commented before watching the whole interview. Be more mindful next time.
I thought he may have asked Florence the question because she has such a great figure. Curves don't lie! That's just my interpretation.

This was one of the last interviews that the Supremes gave before Diane was pushed to the front and the group was renamed. After that happened, Mary and Flo/Cindy were relegated to the background and Diane not only monopolized the songs leads but the interviews as well. It's a shame because Mary and Flo, as they show here, came off well in interviews. Very charming and articulate.
Diana was not pushed to the front....the public pushed her to the front by making the songs she sang lead on number ones. Berry was about success if he thought Flo or Mary would take him where he wanted to go he would have backed them...Diana was a winner and he backed the winner the one the public was BUYING....your resentment toward Diana is too bad cause she has moved up and on to bigger and better things in spite of the hate thrown at her by fans of her background singers...Mary was fake as hell she used Flo's death like a career opportunity....

@@Maatization It's funny that so many people honestly believe Diana Ross became a big star because she screwed Gordy. If that were the case, most of them should have been big stars. Because those weren't the only panties at Motown he got in. Some of them were just too discreet to let it get out. If anything, I believe Gordy started sleeping with Ross to control her. His first wife said that he was a pimp when she met him and they are good at using sex to control their prostitutes. If that's his background, he would definitely know to do that to keep his biggest moneymaker in check and manipulate The Supremes to infight so they wouldn't realize they weren't really getting paid (As Flo learned after she was fired). Straight business move!
