The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Ed always knew true talent. They appeared on his show 16 times. Mary Wilson said, “In the early Sixties, you never saw a lot of black people on television unless they were maids or doormen,” she added. “When we started appearing on Mr. Sullivan’s show in 1965, it was a new day for America. Black people in their elegance were now seen out front up close. Ed Sullivan brought rock & roll to white America. For the Supremes, it showed we had made it to the big time in those days. We had already begun to sell millions of records, but now we were on top of the charts. Being on The Ed Sullivan Show meant more records sales. After us, all of the Motown acts appeared.”

They were great but let’s be real. Supremes had a dozen tunes, none of which they wrote and they didn’t arrange, compose or play the music. Plus they weren’t even close in record sales. Diana’s Eye Popping routines are always in the early tv appearances. Her brother told her she had pretty eyes so that’s why she’d roll and batt them. Motown basically sent them on tv with little stage etiquette and without routines. Around 1965 that’s when they received proper etiquette training: how to eat, get out of a car, speak, smile, and sing while on stage. Maxine Powell got on to Diana about her eye rolling. Eventually after Maxine Powell stopped training them Diana would still do some eye rolling/popping in certain performances.

Too bad she drowned herself in misery. I was reading Mary's book and she and other did, said, created circumstances etc. to help pull Florence out of the dumps, but she chose to stay down. She did not like Diana pulling the stunts that she pulled. Instead of hatred, envy or jealousy - she should have collected checks and planned a future course with money. Diana would have still gone solo and Florence may have lived longer. It is one of the saddest and unfortunate stories in the entertainment world, and it is weird how they and their partners The Temptations both wanted fame, got it, and it tore them up.

I've always wondered if Diana's eye-popping thing was the reason they weren't on Sullivan until almost a year later in Oct 1965. Diana said they were supposed to do two songs but were off right away. I guess they proved themselves at the Copa a few months later. Ed Sullivan was there to see them.😊

I don’t think so. She eye-popped on that performance too (the one where they sang “You’re Nobody.....”) and they were welcomed back 10 more times! Perhaps the one instead of two song thing had more to do with a scheduling conflict with another act for the show.
Thankfully, Maxine Powell stopped Diana from doing that bizarre eye-popping thing that was born of Diana’s brother telling her she had “beautiful eyes”.

The fact that Ross’s eye poppin (for good or bad) was a conversation piece, the Supremes were talked about. But it’s the HITS that make them the undisputed American group (to this day 10/2020) with #1’s. That’s a long time in the music world to hold a record. I do think some consideration should have been given to shared leads with Florence and Mary or more album leads for them ,as they were supposed to be a group. As good as the Classic Five Temptations were, they did alternate leads between all of them.

It's that damn Barry Gordy's fault but if u look from a business point it was very profitable and a success. Show biz is a cutthroat industry and was especially harder at tht time in the end u have to remember Motown is not only music company but a business and Barry a businessman. Diana in the lead with Flo and Mary as a backup singer had bigger and massive appeal and sold many records that charted to top which made more $$$ for Barry so he stuck to that formula and in the end it benefited him a lot.

Barry recorded all of them as lead singers and he released those singles but the singles had little to no success until it was Diana's turn. Diana's lead got the group a lot of attention and the public was calling radio stations asking about the girl singing the lead..
Barry of course decided to give Diana another lead single and that record got even more buzz and broke into the top 20 on Billboard.
After that it was a company decision that all leads will go to Diana Ross.. Making Diana the lead vocalist had nothing to do with her personal relationship with Barry, he and Diana were not sleeping together yet in 1964/65.

We all know that Berry and Diana got together at some point, but its a fact that all 4 members of the group were recorded as lead singers.. Diana's two lead singles in 1964 received the most buzz from radio and the public and thats when Berry decided to make Diana the official lead of the group. Also, once the girls signed with Motown, the girls became a manufactured product of Motown who molded them into what they became. It doesn't matter what you and I think because The Supremes were not our group, they belong to Motown and Motown belong to Berry..
I guess Berry was sleeping with Smokey Robinson and Martha Reeves too? Because he changed the name of their groups too so the lead singer's name would be in the forefront.
Face it bruh, Flo and Mary were glorified backup singers.
The Supremes were not En Vogue and they weren't marketed as such.

@@DJaySplitSecond No, Diana and Berry were not dating until later (spring of 1965, to be precise). Sure, Berry was becoming increasingly infatuated with Diana, but they were not, as yet, dating, when this performance was aired. Poor Florence. I hate what happened to her. But the line everyone takes, "Flo had all the talent, Diana only got there because she slept with Berry" is a gross oversimplification. The truth is, neither Florence nor Mary worked as hard as Diana did. They were just not as interested in the craft - in the work - as Diana was. They were not as hungry. To succeed, a performer needs that hunger, that work ethic, as well as the talent. Read Berry's book, and various interviews from HDH - it's all in there. Flo may have been talented, but she wasn't hungry, and she definitely didn't have the work ethic Diana did. Look at/listen to Flo's solo work - it speaks for itself. It was Diana's work ethic that really attracted Berry to her.

Early Sullivan was mostly live. All Beatle appearances were live, etc. Later the lip synching. Also some later Supremes Ed Sullivan were lyp synched, but that's because they were walking all around the stage, and back then they did not have wireless mics. Also the DC5 did lyp synch, they did not trust the audio techs to get the volal arrangements right. And if you listen to the early Beatles stuff on Ed, the live mix is horrible. You can barely hear Lennon sing on I Want to Hold Your Hand.

The Supremes were an American girl group and a premier act of Motown Records during the 1960s. Founded as the Primettes in Detroit, Michigan, in 1959, the Supremes were the most commercially successful of Motown's acts and the most successful American vocal band, with 12 number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100. Most of these hits were written and produced by Motown's main songwriting and production team, Holland-Dozier-Holland. It is said that their breakthrough made it possible for future African-American R&B and soul musicians to find mainstream success. Billboard ranked the Supremes as the 16th greatest Hot 100 artist of all time.
Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Diana Ross, and Betty McGlown, the original members, were all from the Brewster-Douglass public housing project in Detroit. They formed the Primettes as the sister act to the Primes (with Paul Williams and Eddie Kendricks, who went on to form the Temptations). Barbara Martin replaced McGlown in 1960, and the group signed with Motown the following year as the Supremes. Martin left the act in early 1962, and Ross, Ballard, and Wilson continued as a trio.
During the mid-1960s, the Supremes achieved mainstream success with Ross as lead singer and Holland-Dozier-Holland as its songwriting and production team. In 1967, Motown president Berry Gordy renamed the group Diana Ross & the Supremes, and replaced Ballard with Cindy Birdsong. In 1970, Ross left to pursue a solo career and was replaced by Jean Terrell, and the group reverted the name to the Supremes again. During the mid-1970s, the lineup changed with Lynda Laurence, Scherrie Payne and Susaye Greene, joining until the group, after 18 years from its foundation, disbanded in 1977. Source Wikipedia
