  • The First Hyouka OP - also known as Reason for Kindness or Yasashisa No Riyuu (優しさの理由) - is an almost perfect encapsulation of Houtarou's journey through the first half of the show. So let's chat about symbolism of things that I've already referenced a dozen times but appear here for the first time technically and therefore predate all of the analysis I've already done. Gotta love Hyouka's skies though, name a show with better skies I dare you.

Just a heads up that the next Hyouka video is a far ways off since it's covering the next 6 episodes. If this is your first stop on the Hyouka Analysis series, you can find the playlist here: ua-cam.com/play/PLdXcEDO2xtB-pjqwTiPmWn1wxKmYZqjN8.html

It does make sense to cover it as a whole arc. Take the time you need, man. There's a lot of moving parts in this one.

“War of Roses” mentioned in the OP is about King Richard III which is also the centre of the novel “The daughter of time”. The first mystery of Hyouka has the title “The niece of time” ....

God doesn’t want anybody in hell because He loves us, but you must understand why we deserve hell and why those who refuse to live under His authority will go there. He gave us the law (Ten Commandments) not to make us righteous, but rather to show us our sin (Romans 3:20). We’re not sinners because we sin, but rather we sin because we’re sinners. Sin is the nature of our flesh that we are born with due to the sin of Adam in the garden. For someone to be justified before God they have to be sinless. We’ve all sinned (Romans 3:23), and the the law demands death for those who sin (Romans 6:23). God is righteous, so He must punish our sin, which is what He did through His Son Jesus Christ on the cross. Jesus is Holy and sinless, yet He received our sin when He died on the cross, so that we can be righteous before God (2 Corinthians 5:21). When He died on the cross, He said “It is finished” (John 19:30), which means He paid the full price for all of your sins (past, present, and future) to be forgiven. He was buried and rose again from the dead. God will forgive anybody who puts their full trust in Jesus Christ alone for salvation. We aren’t saved based on our good deeds, but only by the grace of God (Ephesians 2:8-9). His precious blood that He shed is the only reason why we can be forgiven of our sins (Hebrews 9:22). If you confess that Jesus is Lord and believe that God raised Him from the dead, then you’ll be saved (Romans 10:9). You are born-again with the Spirit of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17), and are not only legally justified before God, but also are accredited His righteous (Romans 4:24). Believers live for Christ now, so get to know Him through His Word. I recommend reading the book of Romans and the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John), and watching Pastor Joseph Prince’s online sermons!

A new Hyouka video? Here I am again having to praise your shot-compositional awareness. It's rare to ee someone encorporating eye movement in an analysis. I'm eagerly awaiting all your review of the second half and OP while we all accompany Oreki on his journey! Keep up the good work!

Good video. I like the contrast between when the city is first shown vibrant and busy, then empty while Oreki walks through it alone under grey rainy skies. From a picturesque standpoint I like the part where Oreki walks through the puddle and the ripples are underneath his feet then explode out from under him. I think in addition to seeming serene, I think it's representing courage. The squint Oreki makes when the sun peeks through is his resistance and hesitance, but then his eyes are open wide and he stands upright as opposed to slouched, ready to face the future.

I think there's also a great deal of playfulness to the OP, which is maybe operating less on a thematic level, and more as creative spectacle. It's extremely visually rich throughout, kind of an information overload. In the sequences in the club room, we use jump cuts, while on the second scene in the club room, we intersperse small bits of black leader to break up time more. We have the animation of the written word, and *lots* of reflective, two-dimensional surfaces. I think all these speak, in some respect, to something that feels playful to me.

This comment proves that someone reads those! I have no intention of talking about the ED at this point in time, so I gave it a release date that is impossible.

The scene from 4:51-4:55 is one of my favourites. It's not just Chitanda pulling Oreki into a mystery. Just by changing the camera angle in all 6 shots such that the room looks tilted (lower towards the window), they have made it look like Chitanda is lifting Oreki out of his mundane life.
IIRC, earlier in the series, they have used the light gradient in the room to make the side towards the window symbolically equivalent to a colourful life. So Chitanda pulling him in the opposite direction would seem wrong normally. That's another reason why I think they added the tilt - to counteract the light gradient.
Also, if you hear it with music, the audio-video sync in that scene is just great.

I feel like shows use the same clouds and reflection in their OPs. That looks strikingly similar to Unravel in the Tokyo Ghoul OP.

Hyouka OPs and EDs are legit some of my favourites in all of anime. Lots of fun, lots of symbolism and imagery

Man this anime didn't get the recognition it needed.i rarely used to watch highschool or romance anime and i accidentally watched the first episode back when it was released.and it felt odd watching the it to be honest, since it didn't excite or foretell and the pacing was awkward for me its like the narrator didn't care about dialogues, only animation.but thats what finally hooked me into this, that art.i thought of reading the light novels but since its a mystery genre I'd rather not kill the suspense.that was one decision i did not regret.even though after so many years i still have a strong resonance with this anime
