  • Let's take a peak at what makes an episode that takes place in a single room never feel stale. We're talking about narrative structure, pacing, cinematography, character interactions, and how much meaning can be interpreted from just a few shots. If you thought the café scene was impressive, you've got another thing coming! What do the visualizations tell us about Houtarou? What does an off-hand comment tell us about Chitanda? And how the hell are we supposed to understand their relationship at this point in the show! Episode 19 holds the answers.

      when it has enough material, i think it will.
      the author stated somewhere that he plans to write kotenbu series until they graduate(or until university, i cant remember). so there is still quite a bit to go. they were just year 1 going to year 2 by the end of anime, and currently year 2 in the novel.

    I think now that we're covering this episode it's worth considering one of the big adaptational shifts. This episode is taken from the fourth chapter of volume 4. The first chapter of volume 4 is moved to Episode 1 (The Silk Spider Society and the Ghost in the Music Room), the second chapter is Episode 6 (To Commit A Deadly Sin) and the third chapter is Episode 7 (The Ghost, When Examined). KyoAni adapted this volume such that it made chronological sense in the anime. The rest of the volume is going to be adapted basically chapter-for-episode. What does that mean for interpretation of the anime? It tells us that Episode 1, 6, 7 and now 19 form the beginning of a narrative arc. And that narrative arc is important because now in this adaptation it forms the supporting structure of the overarching narrative of the series. In episode 1 Houtarou introduces us to his motto, deceives Chitanda and is probed by Satoshi about the effort he made to fake the mystery, episode 6 is about Chitanda wanting to believe that her math teacher had a good reason for making the mistake of teaching the wrong syllabus and Houtarou 'avoiding the deadly sin of pride' when he stops himself from thinking he understands her motivations and feelings, in episode 7 Chitanda shares her feelings about always wanting a sibling with Houtarou and he reveals that having siblings isn't always the way Chitanda imagines, he feels like if she looked at him and his sister she'd find withered flowers (and believes if she got to know him, she wouldn't think he were so amazing). And that brings us to this episode, where Chitanda is praising Oreki and he is refusing her praise.
    These are the episodes that are the context for how Chitanda and Houtarou grow closer over the course of the year, leading all the way back around to Spring.

    I've always thought that Hyouka is one of the few shows (I can count them on one hand) that I've seen that legitly makes you feel as though every single chapter makes the characters change, if only just a bit. You never feel like the characters are the same as they were the last episode, and that's because every chapter has a scene or situation that makes them reevaluate something about their worldview or themselves.
    But it is in this last stretch of episodic stories where I feel it the most. And when you feel how each character has immensely grown since the very beginning of the series the most. Is funny how one of the ways it does that is in those "comedic" scenes. This, if I remember correctly, is the first time we see so many different facial expressions from Chitanda. Her soothing and soft personality has always made sense to me because of her personal background as the member of a powerful family, but this chapter in particular is a change of pace for that. Here we see a side of Chitanda that we rarely see, even when the main cast is together. And it just comes to show how so very comfortable she is at being herself with Oreki. And only with Oreki. They're alone, and is like she's a slightly different person. She's even sarcastic in one moment of the episode, and I love it. This episode shows how much they've grown together, and how confortable they are around each other. No wonder it has romantic implications. If anything, Chitanda and Oreki feel like the most realistic and subtle portrayal I've ever seen of a romance starting (too bad the series ends before anything happens), in any medium.
    That's what I had to say about this episode. I never actually noticed the lighning of the scenes, but it is also a very nice touch. You have a keen eye for direction tricks, and with each new video of yours, I convince myself more about Hyouka being the best directed series I've ever seen.
    I love your videos, man. Kind of sad there's little left of Hyouka for you to make videos about it :/

    I just binged all your hyouka videos and you have given me an immense appreciation for this show that I already quite enjoyed. Your analysis is, consistently, extremely thorough and multifaceted. More impressive however is how over the course of your video series you really tap into the emotional and thematic core of this series and just as powerfully convey it to your audience in these videos. I almost teared up a couple times haha. The whole "silent scream/ice cream(i scream)/hyouka" concept is very poetic, poignant and its tonal aesthetic is, I find, personally resonant. Amazing work and I am looking forward to you covering the rest of this series!

    One thing about this episode that particularly tickled me: I read (a translation of) the short story first, and about the time that Houtarou deduces the message concerns a crime, it struck me there was a thematic resemblance to the 1947 short story "The Nine Mile Walk" by Harry Kemelman. In that story, a professor of English meant to prove that a chain of inferences based on a short sentence could be perfectly logical and yet wrong ... but his chain of logical inferences revealing a crime instead proved perfectly true. After reading "Those Who Know Something, " I found an author's note saying that if his story inspired people to read "The Nine Mile Walk," he'd be pleased.

    I see these last few episodes as Hotoro and Chianda escalating their relation with these events they participate in together (dates). First the library, the New Years festival, and then the live doll parade. They might not think they’re dates, not at first, but I think they come to realize the type of relationship they are in by the end of the series. Chianda even goes as far as telling Hotaro not to expect a valentines chocolate due to her family not participating in that event. It is done so subtly and honestly it really feels natural. We see in the library episode Hotaro deny doubling with Chianda on her bike due to the perception of it but accept being her soldier for the love doll episode which has be far more meaningful for these two at this stage in their relationship. His descisions regarding these two situation tells me everything about how comfortable Hotaro is with being with Chianda, especially in a public display. I just love the progression. It’s written and executed so well. It’s what makes Hyouka so special.

    I recently read a story which at once reminded me of this episode of Hyouka, and I'm almost completely sure this part of Hyouka was influenced by the story. It's called 'The Nine Mile Walk' by Harry Kemelman, and features two characters who have a similar conversation and then play a game to demonstrate how any number of valid theories can be established, and conclusions arrived at, by careful analysis of a single sentence, but they need not necessarily be the correct one. The theory the detective character puts out does turn out to be true, and they end up solving a murder. Even though the implications aren't that serious in Hyouka, the basic plotline is too similar for it to be a mere coincidence.
    Just an observation.

    • @davidbirr2718
      @davidbirr2718 4 роки тому +3

      It's not a coincidence. An author's afterword to the short story this episode was made from states that if his story makes people want to read "The Nine Mile Walk," he'll be pleased.
