    The thing I love about this last part of Hyouka is that while Houtarou and Chitanda's class differences (so to speak) are apparent, Houtarou shows himself to be aware enough to conduct the right formalities when called upon to do so (even if he doesn't always get the jokes). That aside, him unthinkingly replying to Kaho while handing over the sake was especially interesting because in the act of taking over Chitanda's responsibility of handing the gift over, he'd effectively represented her family in a way that would imply a more seriously committed relationship. (I'm sure Kaho knows better, but many stricter/traditional Asian families would be wary of casual partners participating in events where outsiders might see their association with the family as a sign the relationship is more serious than it actually is, especially if the family has not officially recognised the partner as a marriage candidate, because the partner's unchecked behaviour would then reflect on them.) While fortunately for Houtarou, he's been presenting himself well enough, who knows what the Chitanda family would think lol.

      @@gideoncheung8731 That's just speculation on my part based on personal experience with Asian families, so I can't say how relevant this take is in the grand scheme of things. I think the final few episodes do kinda play with that idea though, since Houtarou starts to take a more active role in Chitanda's private life. Not to mention the thing he didn't end up saying...!!

    My new favorite thing is to watch Hyouka episodes with people who haven't seen them, and then show them these Hyouka dissection videos immediately after so they can fully appreciate it.
    When I first watched Hyouka, I knew it was something special, and even more so after several repeated viewings, but I never could quite put it into words how or why it's special. And all of a sudden, Replay Value came into the picture, and basically explains away everything that I never knew about. Thank you, kind sir.

      Same here... it feels so nice to finally understand why this show is good instead of just knowing it! Thank you for putting it in words because I couldn't before..
      And of course, a huge thank you to the people behind Replay Value!!!

    I actually really like the mystery in this episode, mainly because it forces Houtarou to think differently than he usually would. Usually Houtarou is the one piecing the information together. Here he's the one putting out the pieces. The mystery, as I see it, isn't "How does Chitanda and Houtarou get out of the shed?" but rather "Where is Chitanda and Houtarou?" So Houtarou has to give the information for Satoshi to piece together, just like Satoshi as the database often gives Houtarou the information necessary for Houtarou to piece the mystery together. It forces them to fulfil the other's role for a short while and I think that's really neat

    But he didn't solve a mystery on New Years! He spent it alone with Chitanda. I also like the bit where Chitanda asks Oreki if he drew a "future blessing".

    It's amazing to see that Hyouka still has a following even 7 years later. These videos are super well done and is honestly such a treat to watch! As someone who finished Hyouka in the last week, I really appreciate that these videos are made. Keep up the amazing work!

    This is one of my most favorite episodes! I don't think every episode of the whole series should all contain a great mystery. The fact that the mystery isn't complicated (or in my opinion I wouldn't even call it a mystery lol) make us able to relax a little and focus on the charactor's lives, charactorization and relationship progress more, which I think is as necessary as the great mysteries. It might be weak if one look at it with an expectation of a mystery series but in my opinion, it's cute and fun to watch and as you said, serves its purpose really well.

    I'm glad you enjoyed the episode even if you did find it one of the weakest of the series.
    Me personally, I did love it a bit more mostly for having the Oreki-chitanda ship hit this episode hard and honestly made me hope they end up together by the end of the series ( at least with the novels). Also plus points for having Hotarou trust satoshi to solve the mystery. True best friends at its finest

    Here we are again and I've lost track on how long it has been since I first started watching your videos. Now close to the finale of Hyouka I feel a familiar sense of anxious anticipation cuased by something great slowly coming to an end. I cannot wait to see the conclusion to this wonderful series! Regarding this episode. In my opinion the episode while not the best is definitely not on the bottom of the barrel (even though that would still be a compliment as you also said in the video). Nothing there that hasn't been said already but seeing the character dynamics this way before the show pluges into the finale is really heartwarming. Plus the more serious aspectts serve a great job in foreboding coming story lines. Anyways amazing job as always and keep it up!

    I particularly like this episode, the mystery is simple for a reason, they needed something simple and easy to get out of there, there's no reason to complicate everything just because.
    sometimes simplicity is better

    I wouldn't call this the worst episode of Hyouka. For me, its very satisfying to see the circumstances relating each of our character to their local community. This also shows the many perspectives and environments that each of them grew up in, with Juumonji Kaho and Chitanda representing the major powerful families (ten and thousand if you get it) and being very well versed in the intricacies of formalities. In contrast, Oreki represent the more "commoner" point of view, having less understanding of the various duties and formalities while being free to be a sloth over new years. Mayaka and Satoshi sit in between these two extremes in views, with Mayaka learning from the Miko job and Satoshi being interested enough to know a little bit about everything.
    Also, this episode has my favourite soundtrack of the entire Hyouka series: ua-cam.com/video/Ym0jT5GWESw/v-deo.html

    • @lugiarboy
      @lugiarboy 5 років тому +3

      This episode also sets up the stage or world for the characters before the finale at episode 22 showing the duties that Chitanda holds against the lack thereof which is the case for Oreki.
      Light Novel Spoiler: (you have been warned)
      Which then becomes all the more surprising and heart-wrenching in volume 6 of the light novel when Chitanda is told that "she now has wings" and is freed from her many duties as the Chitanda house's daughter. This completely breaks apart her world-view and entire meaning for existence in the little interconnected local community.

    This is actually one of the episodes that i really like, i like that we get to see more of Chitanda's other side here. At the beginning (on my 1st watch) I was getting annoyed with Chitanda when she gets all 'I'M CURIOUS' to Houtaro becuse i dislike that feeling of Houtaro being pressured to do it but it was refreshing to see how Chitanda being all proper and acting very formal when she's interacting with people at her "social class" and we get reminded that Chitanda isnt just your typical ditzy airhead female lead and in truth she's a born as a proper lady of a recognized household

    I actually really liked this episode, especially when that (possibly apocryphal) bit of history was used as a way to convey a message in the modern world, although that is from the perspective of someone who has learnt quite a bit about the Warring States period.

    Yeah, I agree this is perhaps the weakest ep of Hyouka but its still great. Like you said, it was anticlimactic how this mystery was solved. It sorta came out of no where and you had to know something that a Japanese person in a " in a matter of fact" way. . It reminded me of many episodes in the Monogatari series where some moment of different interpretation of some far east legend and/or superstition solved everything in the arc. Now we are in the home stretch of finishing the Hyouka series. Gambate!

  • @Manima108
    @Manima108 5 років тому +3

    This mystery was pretty stupid, it could've been solved very easily. One of them could've called for help, while the other hides in the back of the shed. After the first person gets out (either chitanda or hotarou), then they wait around for a bit until they are sure nobody saw them leave the shed. Then they can go back and get the second person. This would've taken less time than continously trying to find ways to get Mayaka and Satoshi to find out they're stuck.

    God doesn’t want anybody in hell because He loves us, but you must understand why we deserve hell and why those who refuse to live under His authority will go there. He gave us the law (Ten Commandments) not to make us righteous, but rather to show us our sin (Romans 3:20). We’re not sinners because we sin, but rather we sin because we’re sinners. Sin is the nature of our flesh that we are born with due to the sin of Adam in the garden. For someone to be justified before God they have to be sinless. We’ve all sinned (Romans 3:23), and the the law demands death for those who sin (Romans 6:23). God is righteous, so He must punish our sin, which is what He did through His Son Jesus Christ on the cross. Jesus is Holy and sinless, yet He received our sin when He died on the cross, so that we can be righteous before God (2 Corinthians 5:21). When He died on the cross, He said “It is finished” (John 19:30), which means He paid the full price for all of your sins (past, present, and future) to be forgiven. He was buried and rose again from the dead. God will forgive anybody who puts their full trust in Jesus Christ alone for salvation. We aren’t saved based on our good deeds, but only by the grace of God (Ephesians 2:8-9). His precious blood that He shed is the only reason why we can be forgiven of our sins (Hebrews 9:22). If you confess that Jesus is Lord and believe that God raised Him from the dead, then you’ll be saved (Romans 10:9). You are born-again with the Spirit of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17), and are not only legally justified before God, but also are accredited His righteous (Romans 4:24). Believers live for Christ now, so get to know Him through His Word. I recommend reading the book of Romans and the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John), and watching Pastor Joseph Prince’s online sermons!
