  • After a bit of a break from Hyouka, we're back with a fan-favorite episode. The memory of a single helicopter becomes quite illuminating into our two protagonists' motivations - which in turn functions as the match that sets off a bit of a flame.

Hey all - something important I forgot to mention is that Houtarou's penchant for helping people is different his feeling on being used by someone (the difference between Chitanda who genuinely asks for help vs Irisu who uses him under the cover of needing assistance) most likely because of the "true feelings" aspect.

If you want to structure the series by arcs, you could mark this as the beginning of the final arc in the series, but now the "mystery" is more implicit than before. We wanted to understand the feelings behind the silence of Sekitani Jun, Hongou, and Tanabe, and now it is the silence of Oreki and Satoshi that is at the forefront.

The assertion that Houtarou's concern about how Ogi felt isn't particularly new is a new idea to me, but even after some thought I can't agree with it. The club's reaction to Houtarou's announcement that he's curious (ep18 at 8:05) clearly signals that Houtarou's behavior in this episode is unusual.
Houtarou hasn't consistently helped others; he's consistently helped Chitanda. In the Festival arc, he wasn't motived to help Tanabe or understand how Tanabe felt; he wasn't even interested enough to verify his assumption that Tanabe's motive was revenge. Houtarou's motive was to sell Hyouka. His reluctance to talk to Chitanda about his lock-tugging epiphany in ep16 at 16:45 indicates that he immediately thought of blackmailing Tanabe after he realized Tanabe was Jumoji, and the culmination of his confrontation with Tanabe was the blackmail deal. In the Fool arc, Houtarou wasn't motived by a desire to help Irisu but by the idea she planted that he was special. He confronted Irisu in ep11 not out of a desire to understand how she felt but out of an angry, offended desire to make her confess. The surprise that flitted across Houtarou's face when Irisu immediately admitted to her manipulation by asking what gave her away (ep11 at 13:45) indicates he still harbored a shadow of a doubt. Houtarou felt better, not because he understood how Irisu felt, but because he no longer doubted what happened.
I interpret Houtarou's behavior in this episode as an evolution due to Chitanda's influence. Despite his constant complaints about her, Houtarou respects Chitanda enough to allow himself, perhaps unconsciously, to be influenced by her. It contrasts Chitanda's influence with Irisu's manipulation in the Fool arc.

For starters, the person who states that Houtarou helps others is Chitanda - and from her perspective, that's accurate - between herself (most mysteries), Irisu (Fool) & Mayaka (E2 & 7). I'm simply repeating that statement. For the following points, I don't believe my argument (that Houtarou caring about "true feelings" isn't new) is actually rebutted by the two arcs used in your central paragraph.
Re: Tanabe - I concur that Houtarou's first motivation was to sell Hyouka (and therefore help Chitanda), but I think it's notable that the second he's secured that, we immediately jump into Tanabe's feelings with Houtarou being the one pressing him for the "why". Just because there's motivation X, doesn't mean there aren't underlying ones. Re:Irisu - again I'm not arguing WHY Houtarou got involved (pressured by Chitanda initially, then Irisu using expectations, then a desire to find the true script / why they were pulled in) - I guess I can see the viewpoint that he felt better because of the "truth" behind the their inclusion, but I just can't read the text of the scene and not come to the conclusion that Houtarou cares about how Irisu FEELS about the words she said (Brackets for Emphasis - [You don't care about those without talent do you] - what about it - So, when you told me I had talent, [was that also just for Hongo's sake?] Were you also lying when you said that everyone should be aware of their own talents - [Those words were not what I really think]. Whether you consider them lies or not is up to you.)
I didn't include this in my video because I viewed it as secondary to my argument - and maybe not outlining the above / this upcoming evidence was an oversight - but I think the best evidence for Houtarou caring about how people feel comes from the bike ride in Episode 4. After Satoshi states something along the lines of if I wanted to insult you I'd call you colorless - Houtarou says "I don't care whether you like me or not" which I parse both as being Houtarou's honest feelings, and as "I want you to be honest with me, if you actually feel like I'm colorless say that." I also look to the walk in Episode 10 & the walkway discussions in Episode 11 & 16 where Satoshi gets real (especially 11 where Houtarou can't respond the second that Satoshi says "if you really believe that, I'll believe you" - since that's how Satoshi truly feels). Basically - the secondary argument would be - Houtarou's friends are honest with him and how they feel about him (Mayaka being one of the best examples of that - their like/dislike relationship is them being SUPER honest with each other), and thus he feels comfortable with them enough to trust them (OVA).
Just wanted to take this moment as well to say - thanks Proper. I always really enjoy reading your comments (even when you take, probably well-deserved, digs at me --- don't worry I took a deep freaking breath haha) and I always look forward to them 1000% of the time. I really appreciate you responding to commenters who refer to things that regard the novels because I've never read them and thus can't speak with any authority on them. And I love being pushed back on my arguments because then I get to refine them and think about Hyouka / other narratives in new ways. I hope this response was satisfactory in explaining my interpretation of the narrative to this point - for what it's worth, I think your argument that this scene is the culmination / byproduct of Houtarou's evolution is a much more engaging one from a narrative level since it means that Chitanda is fundamental in changing Houtarou in more than just his grey-rose-color view point (and some other ways!), I just instead view it as her propagating / illuminating something that was already there! (Sorry in advance if I don't reply to a refutation, I need to keep working on my next video if I'm going to get all the videos I've scheduled for the week out)

I'm always very glad whenever I see one of your videos in my subscription box. I'm repeating myself to death I know but I absolutely adore this series. It's great to see someone pointing out thematic correlations so profoundly. This series has accompanied me throughout my own version of a rather "grey" life and for that I wanted to say "Thank you!"

When Houtarou explained why he is doing thing outside of his norm, I also think Chitanda now understand him more, and also felt love towards him. She utter no words, as her feeling of admire, satisfaction and another feeling she never have before jumble up inside her.

Hey guys , this chapter is from novel 6(even though I have wings now) , it actually happened AFTER episode 22 that is after novel 4 ( the doll that detour) and even after novel 5 ( the approximation of the distance between two) that is the creator first read the all novel and then decided to add this early on so as to arouse their relationship earlier ....which means that there will SURELY be a season 2 but after 2. Years or a bit more.

This is one of eight short stories in the series, the others being episodes 6, 7, 19-22, and the second half of episode 1. However, this is the only short story that hadn't been published in a volume when the anime was produced (it has since been published in volume 6). Note that this is the only episode (other than the OVA, which is an anime original story) that doesn't have an English title (e.g., "Little birds can remember") at the end; those titles are the volume subtitles.
