  • Dave is taken by audience members from Santa Claus, Indiana, who, before the taping, offered him Santa hats, and the show goes off the rails from there. Glen Campbell appears throughout the show singing his hits in Rupert Jee's Hello Deli.
Included here is Act 1, beginning of Act 2, then the rest of Glen's spots, his last bringing the unexpected show theme full circle.
Rupert on Glen Campbell: "I remember him say to me, 'Rupert, I performed in the White House, I played in the Grand Old Opry, and now in the Hello Deli.' Wonderful man who was blessed with music and a joy talking with."

That's me at 21:29 on the balcony with the white hat and long sleeve yellow shirt reaching for snow. Thanks for posting this!

It's quite the testament to Glen Campbell's musicianship that he could sing in a small deli with Paul's band playing in the theater next door and still nail the songs... Great show!

Well all he has to do is hear what they play in the other building which is probably sent back to him through some TV thing.

Wow Don impressive how you were able to dig into your archives right after the passing of Glen Campbell and post something on topic from decades ago. It's phenomenal what you do, it's a historical record and you, Sir, should be recognized for this.

You're very kind, and thanks, but not that phenomenal. I've put up clips on others who had just passed away -- Carrie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds, Zsa Zsa Gabor, George Michael, Prince, Irwin Corey. Maybe others I can't recall at the moment.
Still, I do accept PayPal. (That's a JOKE, people!) :)
For this video I had intended to post just the Glen Campbell spots, but his last number at the end of the show required context, so that's why I included the whole "Christmas in August" thread..

Don is like Reuters with his split-second obituary posts; well done sir! This must be one of the last shows before they changed the floor from red to black?

Ha! For a time late last year I was thinking of renaming this the Obit Channel.
The floor -- the entire theater -- was renovated in March '96. The renovation wasn't complete by March 20, so the show was done in the Sullivan lobby.

Mr. Campbell would have been 59 years old here. Great voice and form.

This is awesome - never knew this ever happened. Glen is one of the few people I've been a fan of longer than Dave! Glen was a great performer into his 70s...just like Letterman.

I don't think you can say "shyster" on TV anymore.

Speaking of Johnny Carwash...can you explain the origin of 'Radu' and possibly do a compilation of all the names Dave had for Paul?

    • @dongiller

      Unlikely; a ton of work.

Do you have lists of such things? Songs played for guests etc. Compliments on the high quality vhs--must have been 'SP' mode!

This one wasn't. Nearly all of my own LN and LS tapes (1985-2015) are EP. Lots of other sources, though, at higher quality.
I think one reason my EP tapes are "ok" is because I never played them back until I digitized them these last two years.
Even if I did have a list of every name Dave had for Paul, it'd still be a ton of work to compile them into one video.

Gotcha. Might be better material for a blog....................:)
