I saw Glen play with Steve Wariner at a fund raiser Steve held every year in his hometown. The venue was outside and I was waiting at Glen's tour bus after the show, with an album for him to hopefully sign, not knowing he was already on the tour bus. I finally walked away and as I was walking I heard someone yell at me. I turned around it was Glen having just walked off the bus. He said, "were you waiting for me"? I went back and he signed my album and even talked guitars for a few minutes. It is a great memory for me.

Glen Campbell played my Uncle's 50th birthday party. I got to hang out with Glen. on the Island of Kauai in 2008. I picked him up hitchhiking. I didn't recognize him.
He didn't know who I was. We were just two friends riding around the Island. So we drove to "pine trees" in Hanalei Bay. Shook hands and said goodbye. When I sat down at the picnic table with my friend
Jeff asked me "how long have you been friends with Glen Campbell."
I said "I just picked him up hitchhiking." Glen would walk Hanalei Beach. He would stop and hang out, and everybody would pass the guitar around in a circle. He was comfortable just being a person among other people. He loved the beach, he loved to listen to other people play, and hear what they had to say. There was no edge to him. Easy to be with.

Yours is a great recollection story. I met him twice myself, about 10 years apart. Neither time having anything at all to do with music. Just the two of us happening upon each other and talking one-on-one during each occasion to pass time. And you are right. He was a gentleman's gentleman in terms of casual interaction and enjoyment of being in the company of others with friendly conversation.

Cool story. I had a similar, much shorter story of an encounter with a humble Danny Gatton three weeks before he passed. I had met him four times in 1979 when he repaired two guitars for me at his shop in Oxon Hill, MD, but I had been out of State a while and had not seen him when I came back since 1979. I honestly didn't recognize him that day in 1994 although we talked a bit about my guitar and other things at a music gear swap meet down in Waldorf, MD. Only after his passing did a good friend, who had been with us in the latter part of the conversation, make me realize it was Danny.

In 1967 I lived in Los Angeles . I got every break imaginable. I was also only twenty years old. I was at CBS on Fairfax where they shot the Smothers Brothers Show one day with a musical Director doing a lead sheet.
There were all these small 10 by 10 feet practice rooms. I saw a door open, and it was Glen alone in one of the rooms with an Ovation ( not the model he’s using here ) guitar. I walked in the room, and he just said “hi, how are you doing ? “
I said fine I was just there with a musical director writing out a chart for me.
I asked if I could just sit in the other chair ,and listen to what your doing ,and why you’re doing it.
It said it was something for the show.
In any event he was as humble, and kind as a person can get .
He had a sheet he was looking at, I assumed he was reading a chart.
It was just a chord chart.
I had no idea he didn’t read, but he knew instinctive what to do .
    That was so long ago.
It only lasted maybe five minutes, but it was a five minutes I’ll never forget.
Great interpreter of songs. Jimmy Webb wrote for Glen.
That is a match made in heaven.
    A great singer,a great player,and great writer .
That was LA in the mid sixties.

Such a gifted artist. I learned about Ovation guitars/mandolins because of his influence. This video is one of the many treasures fans can encounter. It's players like him that inspired me to be self taught, Steve Howe being foremost. That said, Glen really made it look easy. Greatly missed musical legend. Another brilliant and insightful video by the beloved Fil!

Love your videos. Not a guitar player, just love the instrument. I grew up listening to Rock but a number of years ago a guy at work who loved country told me about Glen Campbell as a guitarist. Wow I would have never known.

The musical guest on the first "Glen Campbell's Goodtime Hour

Fil, I said it before on another video you did of Glen Campbell. He is arguably one of the top five guitar players ever. Thanks Fil. Young people need to know the great musicians, that for whatever reason, the msm seems to constantly ignore.
    RIP GLEN CAMPBELL

He was a very underrated guitarist. He was stuck between rock and country, so I guess that's why most people don't really know how great he was. Most people just thought of him as pop.
And Fil gives us all the technical details of Glen's playing, and my head explodes.

But never underrated by Muscians you'll will note. Though I found a lot of his music a bit bland ( except his Jimmy Web songs) His ability to interpret and the emotion he could add to a song -just wow. Talented man.

wow ! thanks Fil , haven't seen this one before . this one really shows Glen as more of a jazz player without getting out of the "comfort zone" of the majority of the general public listening audience but keeping it wild and interesting enough not to fall into that elevator music palatability that some jazz falls into . this really shows Glens connection with real everyday people bringing complicated musical ideas to folks that otherwise wouldn't understand and appreciate some of the intricacies of top jazz greats

Always a great time with Mr. Campbell , listening to his sound since I was a tiddler. I think he single handedly brought Ovation guitars to the attention of budding musicians way back in the ‘60’s. My privilege to have lived during his run. A foundation stone of easy listening, yet progressive, true music.

I have wondered that as well. Obviously they have worked hard to hone their skills and craft, but I always like to believe that part of it is a gift that allows them to quickly move on to phrasing and melodic constructions. I could have shot free throws 18 hours a day, but I never could have become Michael Jordan. For a very lucky few it just seems to click and they link that with hard work. I know I did not answer your question but I hope someone can step in who can!

Clay Diggs Great question. Also wonder when you get super-good, do you continue to get better. Say, Duane Allman. He was stunningly great when he died at age 24. Would he have gotten appreciably “better?”

Bill White as John Bonham on drums. Earliest LZ albums at 21. HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE???

    • @Neal_Schier
      @Neal_Schier 4 роки тому +2

@@chipurBillWhite Bill, you in turn raise a good question. There have been some astonishing good musicians who were very young. Even if they were practicing like mad, they only had a few years to do it.
I think of how young John Bonham was, for example, when Led Zeppelin I came out. He had a great sound albeit perhaps not the technical application that a Rich or Krupka had but my gosh what fluidity and groove behind the drum kit.
How did such musicians get those chops and what practice did they have to put in? Yes, I know the 10,000 rule but some have not been alive long enough to put that amount of time in!

A bit of a renaissance man. Glen was one of the best as an all round entertainer. That included capably hosting a variety show, acting in films, and was just an amazing guest on talk shows (including British & Australian TV shows) - he owned the room. His charisma, sense of humor, and being able to tell stories made even a curmudgeon like Johnny Carson chuckle non stop. RIP to the G.O.A.T. 🐐

The tone was beautiful. These tv appearances are what got me into the guitar initially, Roy Clark, Glenn Campbell, et all from the 60's and 70's tv were truly skilled and musical. Johnny A. Is the only one from today that comes to mind who will do covers in a solo instrumental style that just wows you. His version of Wichita Lineman is flawless.
