      Hi Sam,
      I will add it to the list of videos to make.
      It is quite simple:
      1a. Go to your router IP address ie; 192.168.X.XX
      or
      1b. router.asus.com/Advanced_VirtualServer_Content.asp
      2. Click WAN #skip if used long link 1b
      3. Click Virtual Server / Port Forwarding #skip if used long link 1b
      Then:
      4. Enable port forwarding
      5. Click Add profile
      6. Enter settings
      7. Click OK
      Hope this helps
      Kind regards and keep well

We hit the limit of what it could support but are keeping it as a backup as it will still work for us just not manage all the devices we have. Hi NostalgicMoments, most if not all ISP’s are a monthly contract for x months, so I don’t really understand what your question is.
      As long as you have a modem of some type and an internet connection this should work. Best is a cable or full fibre modem to avoid Double NAT that you may get from an ADSL modem.
      Ie a router with modem only mode.
      Hope this helps, happy to answer any other questions.

    Which modems work with asus router?

    • @BrenTeckITSupport
      @BrenTeckITSupport  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Agent Zoom,
      Any modem will work should with it as long as it has an RJ45 Ethernet socket as its connecting port.
      The compatibility problems arise when you are using a Router Modem that does not support Bridge mode, as this can cause a double NAT issue which may or may not affect you.
      I hope this helps and hope you subscribed. I am working on an UniFi video and hoping to publish it within the next two months depending on how many more sponsored videos we get in the meantime.

      If you Bell Modem is a Modem router then put in in modem only mode if that is not an option you may have to use one of the yellow ports and hope Double NAT is not a problem.

      @@BrenTeckITSupport I have the ROG AX11000 so I am assuming the changes would be the same for your router as well. The difference I have seen is that CAKE QOS and FLEX QOS are now available. I have tried both and they are excellent. Really like FLEX because it doesn't slow down my speed yet my network still gets an A+ rating on DSLreports speed test. Also you can add Skynet Firewall to your router which has been really good and it works alongside the router's regular firewall. It now allows you to see the routers temperature which I don't think was an option before. There is a sub menu you can access using ssh. If you go to Eclipse Reviews UA-cam channel and look at his videos on the Merlin Firmware he does an excellent job of explaining some of the differences and how to access the sub menu through ssh (not too difficult to do). I have had literally zero disconnects since installing the firmware. I would bet if you run Merlin for awhile you won't be going back to the stock firmware. Everyone I have told about it that has installed it seems to like it a lot. If you end up installing it let me know what you think after you use it for awhile.

      You connect your fibre converter straight to the Internet port and should be good to go.
      If you have fibre phons then you will need to go though your ISP router first and then into a LAN port and you could then get Double NAT problems.

    • @BrenTeckITSupport
      @BrenTeckITSupport  3 роки тому +3

      Hi Kenneth
      If you already got the AX88U don't bother looking elsewhere, for now, you will be very happy with it. Looking at the specs the AX86U might get faster internet throughput to fewer devices as it supports 2.5Gbps and only has 4 1Gbps Ethernet ports, plus you will need a 2.5Gbps internet connection to see any benefit. So if you dot have that speed coming in it will be slower all around. The AX88U is the best all-round router I can find for the Home\SHB.
      All the best and keep well for 2021

    I want buy it next week and replace my Archer C9. First problem with it is the range, which is insufficient for a larger than average apartment. The second one is that it has very limited sharing capabilities. I want to use it for uncompressed 4k Blu-Ray Movies (up to 90mbps bitrate) which the TPL can't match, my internet connection being 1gbps.

    • @BrenTeckITSupport
      @BrenTeckITSupport  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Paul,
      The range is so dependant on the environment so can't say for sure. I have installed many networks and building construction changes so much. One place I went to you could not get any signal thought their old front wall, I mean any single not even mobile or radio. The wall had wire mesh on both sides so blocked everything.
      From memory, the TP-link Archer C9 is a nice reliable router. I had the C7 before the Asus ax88u. We have a three-bed two-storey detached house and get 5g signal in every room including the loft. The Asus AX88U is on one side of the house on the ground floor in the middle under the stairs. Not the best place to put a WiFi router but it works for us. We get signal in the back garden and just to the front door, only just. Now with insulation installed in the garage, the Netatmo camera can't keep a single and keeps dropping out. Lots changed since I did the router videos. So I also have the C7 in the loft as a switch for the solar panels and 2g only access point as a dedicated 2g network so I don't have to keep switching for 2g only equipment. Our C7 gives us good coverage but the ax88u give us even better.
      Speed will not be an issue I tested it with 4 4k TVs streaming different 4k UA-cam videos at the same time and had two phones and laptops doing speed tests at the same time. All work perfectly and all speed tests showed our max 45mb download at the time as we had 50md connection. I couldn't get the connection to drop. If you do have a dead spot and you can run an ethernet cable you can use your old C9 as an access point if not take advantage of AiMesh and get a 2nd AX88U amzn.to/3cN1EPL or RT-AC88U amzn.to/2xYZkpx. I hope this helps. ua-cam.com/video/8WG4OxOaj0E/v-deo.html we also have a video on the way ua-cam.com/video/punlQilL2Y8/v-deo.html

      @JScope Hi JScope,
      You will need to use your current coax modem to get internet to the AX 88U.
      If your current coax device is a dum modem then great just connect it to the WAN port and you are good to go.
      If it's a Router modem combo you will have to put it into modem only mode. Otherwise, you will get a double NAT conflict. YOu can still work with that but it may cause problems down the line. Check with your provider for settings.
      You probably will not get the full 1Gb down as normally providers say up to xx speed but you sound be close if not you may need a newer modem from your provider. Speeds are always a bit out so if you are getting 900Mb down consider that good. If you are getting 500Mb complain to your ISP.
      The AX 88U should be about to handle your max speed for one device at a time but for each device you have, that speed will be shared between them. This is normal and will be the same with any equipment.
      Asus does not state the max though put of the 88U, I believe it to be 1Gbs so you should be fine.
      I have now moved to Unifi devices as I am now over the 64 fixed IP limit it can manage other than that it's a great piece of kit.
      Hope this helps, please ask more questions if you have them and hope you subscribed.
      Kind regards
      David

    I just bought the 82. I went through the setup just like in the video and it did nothing for my mbps, ping or latency. When I bought it, the guy at bestbuy told me that in order for it to work properly I'd have to contact my IP and get my PPP name and password. I did this and switched my WAN to PPPoe. Still getting the same numbers.

    • @BrenTeckITSupport
      @BrenTeckITSupport  3 роки тому +2

      Hi James,
      I have not tried the 82 so I do not know how good it is but these are settings you can try.
      If you are changing form Automatic IP / Static IP to PPPoE you will need a modem such as TP-Link 300 Mbps Wireless N VDSL/ADSL Modem Router, Supports Modem Only Mode amzn.to/2NeQ3Bi or The DrayTek Vigor 166 VDSL/G.Fast Modem amzn.to/3q6002f! Unless your router has a built-in modem and the RT-AX82U does not. Your ISP may give you a new hub/modem which might be faster than what you already have.
      You may also need to change your MTU and MRU settings, contact your ISP for the best settings. Some support staff may not know what you are asking about and may direct you to there community support page.
      There is also the possibility that you are already at the capacity of the line speed.
      I hope this helps.
      Kind regards and keep well

      Hi Willem, Sorry you are having problems setting up the RT-AX86U the setup should be almost identical to that in this video for the RT-AX88U so probably best to factory reset both you modem and the RT-AX86U and start again and make sure your modem is placed in modem only mode first then just follow this video step by step. Make sure you know your ISP settings before resetting your modem-router/HUB.
      There is no need to do setup on any device apart from the modem and the AX86U all devices should automatically find the AX86U and just work unless they have been custom configured at which point. Either reset all network settings to default or renter your customer settings to whatever you set on the AX86U.
      I recommend quad9.net to use as your DNS so 9.9.9.9 & 149.112.112.112
      The AX86U will assign all IP addresses and can set any static IP address you want, so no need to configure this at the endpoints, unless you know what you are doing with this. Best to leave all endpoints set to default for now ie dynamic IP so the DHCP server for example (192.168.1.1) on the AX86U can sort this out for you.
      If you need any more help please ask with specific errors or problems and I will try to help.
      If you are in Kent we can do a call out and set it all up for you see www.brenteck.com

All smart home devices are set up on the guest network yet everything appears on one list. There is no distinction I can see that tells me which ones are on guest and which on main. Hi Bugatti
      A very good question, I am sorry to say I do not think this level of information is possible with home-based networking equipment. No real good reason not to other than to have a price differential for enterprise-grade hardware such as UniFi; www.amazon.co.uk/gp/search?ie=UTF8&tag=brenteck02-21&linkCode=ur2&linkId=ac8389f5bec0fa8bf87f58a55072fb38&camp=1634&creative=6738&index=computers&keywords=unifi its work checking them out. Good value for money and work very well. I have just done an install using them and finding it to be a good bit of kit, especially for the money. But you have to know what you are doing to set it all up. It is not as much of a plug and play system, to get the best out of it there are more settings to configure. I will be doing a video on UniFi soon so please subscribe to get notified when it's out.
      I hope this helps, sorry for the delay I have been very busy setting up the new UniFi network for a local charity.

    • @BrenTeckITSupport
      @BrenTeckITSupport  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Donaldson,
      Like any electronic device it does generate some heat, the more data you put though it the hotter it gest.
      Think of this router as mobile phone when gaming and charging in regards to top temperature. So it is warm to the touch but not hot.
      I have a small 9" fan blowing across it as I am running two servers 24 7 with remote users so the router never gets a break and I wanted to give it a bit more airflow as it lives in a cupboard with lots of other electronics so the ambient air temp is higher in the cupboard than the rest of the room. Not the best place for it but the only one I have. Most people will level it on a desk or shelf so airflow should be sufficient and that is what it is designed to operate with.
      I hope this helps, but regardless all routers will generate some heat so this really should not be an issue.
      Thanks for watching and commenting keep well,

    • @BrenTeckITSupport
      @BrenTeckITSupport  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Toe,
      When you say you use a cable for internet I assume you mean Virgin Media, not BT? If so all you do is put you Virgin hub into modem only mode and connect LAN port 1 from the hub to the WAN port on the AX88U and you should be good to go.
      WAN stands for Wide Aria Network ie some other network like you ISP Internet Service Provider. WAN IP address is set buy ISP somthing like 8.42.8.27 which can be Static or Dinamic.
      LAN stands for Local Aria Netwrok ie in your own home network where you have a local set of IP address 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254
      The AX88U does not come with a built in modem so you will need some form of conection to the internet ie a home hub in modem only mode, a BT Openreach modem or faling that a standad home hub and jsut use a LAN port on the home hub to the eath the WAN or LAN on the AX88U depending on your setting I sujust usign the WAN port like I did in the video and try and turn off as many setting from the hub as you can.

    Are you using a BT Smarthub as a modem? Doesn’t that give you double NAT? I did have the Asus RT-AC86U with Merlin firmware which I sold for a Ubiquiti Dream Machine, and the Dream Machine has fantastic user interface, a billion features, but it’s WiFi is crap and for gaming it’s really rubbish! So I’m thinking of going back to Asus and getting the RT-AX86U WiFi 6 router and put Merkin in it again. How have you found the wireless on your Asus WiFi 6 router?

      Hi Marksapollo,
      In the video, I did use the rubbish BT hub as I could not find my old Open Reach modem after we moved and had the hub from BT after we moved so had no chose at the time. Most home users will find that this is the quickest and easy way to get up and running, not the best but the quickest and easiest way.
      I did have some problems because of it when dealing with servers such as a NAS and a PI. So I had to dig out the Open Reach modem and all is fine now. If only they allowed for modem only mode.
      I have not tried the AC86U so I don't know how that compares. I also have had no luck with Merlin as the firmware I had blocked third-party update. I have heard good things about Merlin, but I can not speak from personal experience about it.

      Hi Greg,
      Good question I have not personally tried the GT-AX11000 so I can not say what it is like. If it is based on the older Rog Router I would avoid it as the old AC5300 ua-cam.com/video/TTzKTsami_g/v-deo.html my review at the end ua-cam.com/video/TTzKTsami_g/v-deo.html?t=1028 was rubbish so I had to switch to the AX88U which has been great. Apparently, the Merlin Firmware fixed problems but I never tried it. I think at the time it was not officially supported.
      You may be interested in the UniFi equipment as it's about the same price, more flexible and better quality but fare more technical to set up, amzn.to/3guLnT7 www.brenteck.com/networking/ I will be doing a series on this latter. I have now switched to UniFi as I have more devices than the ASUS can handle now over 60 ish Fixed IP Addresses.
      I really recommend the UniFi Setup if you are serious about Networking Start out with the USG amzn.to/3cDOCXA, Switch amzn.to/3jfdoyl and 1 AP AC Pro amzn.to/2Zi2z5D then expand as needed.
      For a small home setup go for the AX88U, you can add UniFi APs to it later if you have WiFi dead spots.

    At my wits end with Virgin broadband! Paying for 100mbs. The most inconsistent broadband I've ever had. Engineers been to house to check equipment and all ok. Wondering wether to replace Superhub 3 with this router to see if it improves reliability!

    • @BrenTeckITSupport
      @BrenTeckITSupport  3 роки тому

      Hi Paul,
      The Virgin hub is a piece of junk. The best thing to do is put the hub into modem only mode and use the AX88U. You should then get your full speed and a stable connection.
      If not it could be a line fault but as you have had engineers over this is less likely but still a possibility.
      When testing connections use ethernet directly to the router. If that is not an option when using WiFi make sure you are in the same room as the router and connected to its access point, not any others you may have.
      WiFi can always be flaky no matter what your equipment if there are outside factors such as fluorescent lights, microwave ovens and any other electrical spikes \ radiation. Not going to harm you or your equipment but could interfere with WiFi. Better equipment deals with this interference better but is always something to consider especially if there is a pattern to it failing.
      I hope this helps, keep us posted if you get the AX88U amzn.to/3cN1EPL
      All the best and keep well

    • @BrenTeckITSupport
      @BrenTeckITSupport  4 роки тому +3

      Hi Jagjit,
      A very good question.
      If you are only connecting one device via ethernet probable, not much difference and not worth it.
      If you are using WiFi then yes, you probably will see a better more stable WiFi connection, therefor faster speed and with farther range.
      The greater the number of devices you have both WiFi and LAN the bigger the difference between a free modem/router combo and a dedicated router. The more devices you have the more you need the AX88U I have about 40 devices running 24/7 without a problem.
      Putting the ISP router into modem only mode also helps a lot as it can focus on one task, giving you internet access and letting the AX88U to handle the network. Some ISP routers don't let you do this which is a shame as it can limit what you can do. There are workarounds but a dedicated modem and separate rooter are best.
      I hope this helps

      @@dragonslayer647 Hi BlackDragonDeath,
      What type of connection do you have to the internet?
      DSL (normally from a normal phone line) You will need an ADSL modem or modem router in bridge mode and an ADSL filter
      Cable (normally from a cable provider for TV and internet) You will need a Cable modem normal the service provider one will do, might be built into your TV decoder.
      Or Fiber (using optical cable, this is new and not very common yet)
      Looking at Amazon.com for DLS modems looks like most are only 24Mbps very slow compared to the UK so any DLS modem will do including your providers so best to make sure that is working first and then see if it can be set to bridge mode/modem only. Then connect to your ASUS router's WAN port. If you can not get your DSL modem into modem only mode you may end up with double NAT which may or may not cause problems with some devices connecting to the internet.
      You may have to talk to your service provider to get things up and running but I know a lot of ISPs do not want to help with 3rd party equipment because that will require helpline staff to know what they are talking about instead of just reading a script.
      So you may end up with your ISP router setup as your gateway router and turning off its WiFi and using the ASUS as an access point only with its DNS function turned off so it works as an Acces point and switch only. If this is the case connect your modem to LAN 1 instead of the WAN port.
      I hope this helps if you can answer what type of connection you have I might be able to help more.
      All the best

    Hi, with the review being 2 months old now. Would you still rate this router for gaming and streaming?

    • @BrenTeckITSupport
      @BrenTeckITSupport  4 роки тому +2

      Hi Earl,
      Yes, I love the RT-AX88U router amzn.to/3cN1EPL. I don't do much gaming but I do 4K HRD streaming and have cloud servers running without any problems.
      I wish it came with a built-in modem like the Asus DSL-AC88U amzn.to/3482HIL. This is the problem changing between providers and the providers not giving good modems out.
      The aX88u has better LAN and WiFi whereas the aC88u might have better down and up WAN because of the modern for none cable only (BT). Even running cloud servers I am OK with the speed I get as it's down to line quality so for me the AX is best. I am getting 43mbps down and 9mbps up with the line capable of 46mbps so the AX with the Openreach modem is not a bottleneck were as LAN traffic the AC would be.
      So I would go for the RT-AX88U router amzn.to/3cN1EPL especially if you are with Virgin Media or have the Openreach modem but not essential as my video shows.
      All the best and keep well

May I ask if I purchase this also, does this replace my BT router or is the Asus connected to original router provided by Internet provider? If anyone can help it would be much abliged.

      With Full Fibre installation BT will upgrade the master phone socket (the white box on the wall) and install an Openreach modem (ONT), which connects to the fibre optical cable that comes into your house.
      The ONT enables you to get our fibre broadband and phone services and connects to your BT Smart Hub or you can connect the The RT-AX88U router amzn.to/3cN1EPL

      Hi Ulyze,
      If you are having problems like this try factory resetting it, then doing a firmware update. If that does not help is it all devices or just one? If its just one look at that device as it could be the client at fault. If it's all devices make sure all the antennas are secured on properly. If you still have a problem then contact the seller and see if they can swop it as it could be a faulty router. I never have a single drop unless I am at the end of the garden.
      I hope this helps.

      Hi Vorpal,
      Is the WAN light white or Red?
      If it's white, all is probably ok just. Check if you have internet over your network LAN or WiFi if so all is good. Just restart the app.
      If it is red then you will have to check your settings. Make sure everything is plugged in and turn on. If using a DSL modem make sure you have the right settings for that as well. Check with your ISP

I did have the Asus RT-AC86U with Merlin firmware which I sold for a Ubiquiti Dream Machine, and the Dream Machine has fantastic user interface, a billion features, but it’s WiFi is crap and for gaming it’s really rubbish! Hi Marksapollp
      I hope you are well.
      Yes at the time of filming I was stuck using the rubish BT Hub. Yes it did give some problems most I could work around but some of its restrictions did get in the way. I managed to find our old OpenReach modem which did the trick.
      The WiFi is amazing both in 2g and 5g using WiFi 5 and lower due to the devices we have at the time. I now have two WiFi 6 cards in laptops and they also work perfectly. WiFi 6 will come into its element when WiFi smart home tech is more standard smart home WiFi mostly uses 2g to keep costs down. Penny pinching for no good reason WiFi 6 is great for smart home tech with the sleep and scheduling functions built-in.
      On the whole, the AX88U is the best home router I have ever used so far.
