I bought this last 2 days ago to upgrade my RT-AC68U and ohhh boy this router is so good on what it can do. The QOS (cake) is so good even I max both upload and download, ping is consistent in online games that I play. It's a big upgrade for me and so happy that I watch some review like this. Highly recommended router (y)
Great video. You've been the biggest influence in me going with an AIMesh set up instead of the prepackaged consumer mesh systems. So happy with the results so far.

Excellent, thank you. My situation is similar as I have a RT-AC68U router with 2 RT-AC68U repeaters (all running asuswrt-merlin). This was a good setup for a long time, but over the last year I've been plagued with increasingly flakey wifi connections. Not sure if this is environmental, hardware, or combination of the two. It has been quite exasperating to pin this down, especially since the CPU load on the router is very low. Tx power on my RT-AC68Us is already at maximum so there's nothing else to be done with that. I'm leaning towards environmental factors being the primary problem and to that end the RT-AX86U will provide a much needed shot in the arm.

I am hoping to purchase this router with hopes of connecting to it from upstairs. thanks again!
Hi, I haven't tested it's performance in a 2-story house, but usually it's hard to cover a 2-stoty house with one wireless router because the wifi signals travel horizontally around the router but not that much vertically! So probably the best place to install a router in such a situation is somewhere in the center of the first floor but close to the ceiling rather than ground. I would try that first before buying a new router. Thanks
Okay, but isn't the increased range just simply the result of increased signal strength? Of which could be set higher on the old router as well, if someone would be so inclined?
The firmware for these routers was updated to reserve the HTTPS port for Asus "services" use even if you aren't using them, i.e., so you could no longer use it for a locally hosted OpenVPN. Is that still the case with this newer router? I would assume so, and if so, will the Merlin firmware work for this? Thanks for the video and great channel! Cheers.

Hello, I enjoy your channel. I have a question. I see that Amazon has a new ASUS RT-AX86S, that's with an S, not a U. Is this a newer version on the ASUS RT-AX86U?
Awesome video! Only one question, do you have the max data rates of the throughput wireless backhaul? I think this router has 4x4 mu-mimo and 160Mhz bandwith in 6Ghz band, so that theorical max throughput woud be 4.8Gbps. Then real max throughput could be 3Gbps aprox, and that's amazing speed in wireless conectivity at home.
Why did you need to install different firmware in the AX in order to test it's AIMESH with different other ASUS routers? Isn't the latest AX version able to support the latest versions on the others?
Hello again, I've been with AiMesh for over a year and it's been great so far. I'm planning to purchase more units, but cannot find recently. Do you have any idea why? Are they planning to produce new models?
My question here about the router - are you using the OOB firmware to get that performance or did you install something else like fresh tomato or DDRT?
I love your reviews on Asus routers very informative. Ive been debating between this and the ax88u, for all intents and purposes they are essentially the same router in terms of wifi capabilities and range/speed. Beside the 2.5gb port, the ax88u is the better router no? It is currently quite a bit cheaper then the 86u from pretty much any source I am able to purchase from. Was it a 'bad' choice in the sense that the 86u is better. I ordered the Ax88u earlier today :P Ive a rtac88u for a few months now and love the extra ports and speed of the router over my rtac68u
Hi Behfor, just for reference, how large is your home and how well can the router perform on its own without the additional mesh nodes? Thanks for the help!
How is the 2.4 GHz range on the AX86U compared to the AX82U (if you have it). I got the 82U and it just about reaches my shed (about 22m away) but the signals pretty weak. Surprisingly, the range is worse than my 8 year old ISP provided Huawei HG533. And on 5 GHz, with WiFi anaIyzer on my phone I get between -60 and -70db indoors at 7m and smiliar for the 2.4GHz. Can you do a 2.4 GHz outdoor test with WiFi anaIyzer on your phone and see how many meters it goes?
I have a ac68u also for about 5 or 6 years. After watching your vids im about to purchase the ax86u today after work. I'm wondering if the ac68u can be used as a node or something with aimesh with the newer router or is it to old of tech?
I'm not sure how to answer your question because it's a bit vague. I need to know what your primary router is and how you want to connect this device-whether it's as a mesh, access point, media bridge, or repeater. There are too many unknowns.
Do you get any problems with the WiFi dropping in speed ? just purchased the RT-AC86U really like it but having problems with the WiFi - my connection is 300 down and 75 up - on the WiFi the speed alters quite a lot even when close to the router and sometimes I have had no internet on WiFi but wired is ok - I have to turn off the router leave it for a few mins then turn it back on again and then it usually works ok with full speed on WiFi - not sure if there is a setting wrong but I would of thought it would work straight out of the box once the router was configured to access the internet through your isp - I tried turning on and off different settings like the QoS but that didn’t make any difference
I have a RT-AX86U and a AC-3200. Which should I put first in line?. The AC-3200 does not support AiMesh (maybe with a firmware upgrade, but I can not find this for now)
How about the max. data transfer speed over cable (ethernet) / wifi from the USB 3.0 drive ? Does the 2.5 Gb/s connection offer any improvement/stability over the standart 1Gb/s ethernet connection ?
Hi there I am using the Asus ax86u. Right now currently using the stock asuswrt firmware. I have a two gigabit internet ( 1gb up and 1 FB down ) X2. I tried to use wan aggregate but fail to connect it successfully. I use dual wan mode instead putting the load 1:1 since there's around 15 device and hoping with the router could make each one of them load better. Just want to know with Lan aggregate mode will it do load balance by default ? And is there ways to enable dfs dfs unii-2 channel ? Cos I cannot see the channel listed available for choosing. And thx for all the information you have posted it really helps and my family been very happy with the network speed. Just want to see if I could even push it further. I am in an apartment and there's a lot of WiFi surrounded not much band left so wish to use a more high frequency dfs channel if possible
Hi Behfor, thank you for the video, its great. I have picked up one of these routers but I have an ISP supplied modem/router combo. I dont really want to use that with this as I'm not familar with using bridging mode. I have been looking for a DSL modem to pair this router with and was hoping you might be able to recommend something?
Have a RT-AX86U , and now i want to add another one to do a hard wired backhaul for down stairs (to create aimesh) , what you think should i get the same RT-AX86U or get some better asus model? thanks,
That'll depend on your requirements. The AX86U is a very solid router, the only disadvantage is that it is dual band and not tri-band. Now tri-band is beneficial when you use wireless backhaul because one band can be dedicated for the backhaul but if you are using a wired backhaul you don't need the third band. Thanks.

Why did you need to install different firmware in the AX in order to test it's AIMESH with different other ASUS routers? Isn't the latest AX version able to support the latest versions on the others?
You don't need to install different firmware to use AiMesh and the factory firmware is enough for that.
Hello again, I've been with AiMesh for over a year and it's been great so far. I'm planning to purchase more units, but cannot find recently. Do you have any idea why? Are they planning to produce new models?
How do You compare signal strength between AX86U and AX88U? Which one do You recommend for a large house?
My question here about the router - are you using the OOB firmware to get that performance or did you install something else like fresh tomato or DDRT?
This video was done using the Asuswrt factory firmware, thanks.
Just bought one based on this video, upgrading from an archer c7 ac1750. The wired performance should be the same, right?
Don't you think it would of helped to know what the per client wireless speed limit of each router is? Or are you unaware of this being a thing?
Weirdly enough… my asus 86u just broke today and I had to get a new brand.
I ordered the Ax88u earlier today :P
Ive a rtac88u for a few months now and love the extra ports and speed of the router over my rtac68u
I have the 86U, I guess it is up to U. 🌝
The RT-AX88U is the big boy on the block.
Yes, you can use the AC68U as an AiMesh node. You might want to watch this video: ua-cam.com/video/kPVpsXb6ejU/v-deo.html
@@Behfor ok thanks!
You bet!
Ez sub bro ty
Appreciate it, thanks 👍
من واقعا از ویدیوهای شما لذت میبرم
ممنون
خوشحالم و تشکر که تماشا میکنید
Should i buy this just for a router in my bedroom to connect ethernet to my ps5? Without replacing my main router in the living room
I'm not sure how to answer your question because it's a bit vague. I need to know what your primary router is and how you want to connect this device-whether it's as a mesh, access point, media bridge, or repeater. There are too many unknowns.
in your next videos can you try the speed of file transfer on samba wirelessly?
I am really curious to know the winner between 86u and 92u 😄
I have the Google Nest mesh setup with 3 points. Is this a worthy upgrade or should I wait for new models?
Hi Behfor can you do a tutorial on how to keep my neighbours kids from hacking my Wi-Fi and cameras AX82U Router it’s driving me nuts 👍.
Who is better asus ASUS RT-AX86S or ASUS TUF AX5400 especially about coverage ?
How exactly do you set this up. Do you connect it to ur original router or do you connect it to ur Desktop?
I have a RT-AX86U and a AC-3200. Which should I put first in line?. The AC-3200 does not support AiMesh (maybe with a firmware upgrade, but I can not find this for now)
59u vs 68u any difference of range ? U used 59u?
I would like to do the wired backhaul. Does anyone know who to seek when wanting to do wire fishing in the house walls?
Question can you use this router in a equipment panel box?
Thanks.
@@Behfor Thanks for the reply and advice. I got my second RT-AX86U yesterday ($214+tax.). As of right now i have about 67-70 devices. From wired ip cameras and few wifi cams, plus wifi switches, and other stuff. Will have to see how will this work as i never had a aimesh system in my home. Thanks!
Does it come with a 3ft power cord???
