    In 1988 my family and I were in an airport in Florida. My Dad was in the car rental line and just so happened to be behind Ted DiBiase in line. This was at the apex of DiBiase's heel run in the WWF. My Dad asked him for an autograph and DiBiase told my Dad to meet him at a spot outside of the line. When my Dad went to the meeting spot, DiBiase was there with Honky Tonk Man and The Warlord. DiBiase signed an autograph for my Dad and made polite, nice small talk with him. My brothers and I watched from a distance with our jaws dropped that our Dad was talking to the evil Ted DiBiase! Ted didn't have to do that. He could have just shrugged my Dad off easily with his heel gimmick, but he didn't. 36 years later, we still talk about it.

    I get what Ted's saying. For the sake of real business, yeah, it made business sense to create the Million Dollar Belt and such. But from a fan's perspective, I have to say, a picture of Ted with the world title around his waist as a legit world champion would've also made us very happy. Even an IC title run would've made sense considering the IC title was always kinda "the heel belt" in those days (Honky Tonk, Rude, Perfect, etc.)

      Ted came in above IC level to begin with. Sort of like how Ric Flair came in with the WCW big gold belt and immediately began feuding with Hogan.

      I remember as a kid I hated MDM, and I most likely would have hated to see him with the belt. But the Million Dollar Championship was always a genius idea. Once he had the Million Dollar belt he didn't need any belt. Matter fact they should retire the Money on the Bank and use the Million Dollar belt instead or have a Million Dollar tournament to replace King of the Ring and they would be the Million Dollar champion for a year.

    Million Dollar Man was my favorite heel of all time. Ted was the perfect person to pull it off. The promos leading up to his ring appearances, especially the kid with the basketball, made us want to see him get in the ring and get his butt kicked. Then in his first matches, he paid other wrestlers to fight for him, building the anticipation of seeing whether or not he could actually wrestle. Then he would humiliate the wrestlers he paid to fight in his place when they lost. Buying the title from Andre, then creating the Million Dollar belt. Absolute genius gimmick and storyline with a person who was actually a great technical wrestler. And that arrogant laugh!!

      Wrong. Ted DiBiase was immediately stripped off the belt afterwards in kayfabe and never had it. Never even for a single match, as immediately after Main Event 1, he and Andre teamed up against Hogan and Bigelow on the House Shows throughout February.
      Paul Orndorff also never had the belt, not even in a "he stole it" way and certainly never had a match with the belt.

Other great gimmicks were Hulk Hogan, George Steele, Undertaker and so many more. The greatest "manager" gimmicks were Grand Wizard and Paul Bearer. Unfortunately for Ted , he came along about 3 yrs too early, and the Ultimate Warrior got sich a huge push. Lets face it. No one was taking the belt from Hogan for long. It was always going to be a short term thing. Especially for a heel. ( which is the biggest reason Ted didn't win in WM 4). In those days you weren't sending the crowd home in at that time was your only pay per view, with a heel champ. But if Hogan could have dropped it to Ted when he went to make No Holds Barred, and had Savage pick it up look later year. And they could have stretched out the Mega Powers as well. But who knows with all the politics back then. And Warrior threw off any chance of Ted winning gold in that period. Shame.

    Jake Roberts and Scott Hall were the same way. They weren't stupid marks for themselves and could care less about which belts they had, as long as they had their spot and were getting paid. That is something I could never understand with Bret Hart, that guy would be more happy having 10 world titles under his belt and be making 500k over his career vs. not having all of those belts and be making 5 million.

    • @Provos7777
      @Provos7777 Рік тому +4

      Some guy’s need belts & some guys don’t. Jake & Scott were two big charismatic guy’s with a great gimmick who were terrific on the mic. Bret was a “ wrestler “ who was an underdog beating much larger opponents, so a belt was more important for his character. Also Bret had a much different view of pro wrestling, not to say he didn’t want to get paid. I just don’t think he was a money grubbing type, just wanted to be fairly compensated.

    Best of luck to Marcus, but I dont think this is going to end well. Ted doesn't exactly have a trustworthy or sympathetic image these days. And with the lawsuit he's facing, he's not going to drop the religious gimmick and tell tales from all the women he was plowing through in the 1980s.

      @@DevoJetBoy8680 No, he doesn’t sound bitter with all the bitching and moaning he does in practically every interview I see on social media.
      A long title reign doesn’t mean anything as it’s not real. It was a gimmick. The I.C title is suppose to be a mid card title to build up talent before you go up to challenge for the world title as a main event attraction to feed the likes of Hogan or Warrior. Honkey wasn’t one of those because he was never a draw. He was a side act. A clown. He never generated money as an I.C champion.
      As for him making the money that he has retired on?
      He and a lot of people he can thank for that such as Hulk Hogan because if his name was on the bill it meant you was getting a great payday if you was running a town with him.
      Honkey was smart enough to save the money he made.
