Regarding Virgil’s age, you could tell in ‘87 when he started managing Dibiase that he was in his mid to late 30s. No way did Virgil ever look to be in his late 20s.
I gladly paid him twenty Canadian dollars for a picture. He was part of so much memories of late 80s WWF, like the first arcade game where the bosses was Andre and Ted, and Virgil made the cutscene. My video gamer gushes about Technos gameplay and the wrestling fan digs the details. Of course I paid him for a picture.
I met Virgil in San Diego on the trolley train. He was standing right next to me and we talked. He was a cool cat. He was in San Diego for the Comic Con. This was in the early 2000's.
So here is the story about my friends and myself, meeting Virgil. It was the first Saturday in May of 2000. At the time, I was going to IUP, a college about an hour North of Pittsburgh. I was always a fan of thoroughbred racing as a kid, so id bet on the Kentucky Derby every year, and it became something that my college buddies would join me in as well. At that time, they didnt have apps or internet sites where you could bet from home, so youd have to go and bet it at an actual racetrack or OTB parlor. We would pile in my car and drive down to downtown Pittsburgh every year to bet it. We get down there, and are betting some of the preraces, and are talking, when a black guy stands next to us, and my buddy says, "Youre Virgil, The Million Dollar Man, Ted DiBiase's manager!" I at first laughed to myself, because it was so random of a thing to say that I thought my friend was just joking, and I had no inkling that Virgil was even from Pittsburgh. I turned around to look, and all I hear is this black guy, in a very loud way, saying, "Yeah, thats right, and WHO THE HELL ARE YOU?" We were all taken back by this. I thought it was hilarious, only because my buddy LOVED the WWE as a kid, and was just made fun of by a guy he looked up to as a lil kid. After Virgil walked away, you could see the embarrassment on my friends face, and while he was red, he was able to laugh about it a few minutes later, and we just went on with our day of betting and watching the horses. I gotta admit, I like betting, so UNLIKE my friends, I would bet as many races as I could, so that meant a bunch of trips to to make wagers, and since there were so few of lines with actual live workers in this OTB parlor, Id just always bet on those self service machines they had. Id say about two hours or so later, I went back to where the machines were, was placing a bet, and all the sudden I hear somebody literally smashing the machine next to mine with his fists, and swearing about something about a jockey lol. I look at who the person was, and you guessed it? It was Virgil. When I went back to my friends to watch my race, I told them that I was going out on a limb and saying that I didnt think Virgil was having a very profitable day at the Kentucky Derby that day lol. True story. Ill never forget that day, and my friends from school who I am still close with, we still bring it up and laugh about it every so often lol. Anyway, RIP Virgil. Hope youre having better luck on the Derby up in heaven than you did down here back in 2000.
Ted and I ate breakfast together at the 2010 NWA reunion in Charlotte. Ted is a great guy. Virgil, on the other hand, almost started a fight with my brother that was with me and my wife. Seems like Virgil had some Demons in his life. I hope he was able to overcome them.
