Steven Moffat was so good at writing grandiose speeches for his Doctors.

It really gives me chilles every time I watch this scene. Isn't just 11, they're all the Doctors giving everything they are to save someone, through their experiences.
When he says "a universe driven by the mind of a mad man", I think that that's First Doctor talking about the Toy Maker.
The Time War and the passing of the Time Lords is obviously from 8th and War Doctors.
"I have lost things you would never understand" of course is about all the people he couldn't save, but specially the companions like Adric, Rose, Amy and Peri, from 5th, 10th, 11th and 6th.
And the "You have it all!" of course is like that little death wish he sometimes have, and a hint of the Twelve's personality and arc about accepting that losses.

So happy you covered this covered this scene, great work as usual. It's one of the scenes I always remember most from Smith. The slow build of emotion in time to the music along with the themes of memory and life make it so powerful. As you said Smith's acting range really brought it all together.

I think that Clara saving the day was something that ruins the moment.. because she was unnecessary space. Moffat destroyed whatever writing he had in mind. And during her first travel, she's the one who defeats a parasite like Akhaten, ending up becoming that very parasite for some. Her being a very badly written character ruined the moment. We needed a "villain" to "defeat" the Doctor's most important weapon, to have him brokenly looking at Akhaten. If Clara had some kind of story arc before that moment, I'd have a completely different view.

powerful performance, but an ultimately hollow speech. feels like it was thrown in just to pad the runtime. FAR from the greatest Smith/Moffatt speech, could even be argued as the worst.

Interesting take, what would you say is his best?

@@RamblingManYT i really enjoy the pandorica speech, but my personal favorite would be his regeneration speech. he’s talking about changing his face, but he’s also talking to the audience about how it’s okay to evolve as a person as long as your evolution comes from a place of learning from the past being a better person for it. and the line “i will always remember when the doctor was me” never fails to bring a tear to my eye (or several). Rereading what i said about the Akhaten speech, perhaps i was too harsh. it’s certainly not a bad speech by any means. as i previously mentioned, smith’s performance is absolutely jaw dropping, and Murray’s score is flawless and beautiful as always, but the substance of the speech itself is just lacking in my opinion. it’s all… fluff.
