Sean Bean and Conleth Hill bring the GOODS in this scene! Great performances from both of them 🙌
What do you guys think about this scene?

I wish we got another season with Ned. I always liked this scene and storyline it is a really great retelling of Thomas More’s story.

I would say Varys’s ambition is far more than just self preservation. Cause we see that spineless flexibility in Grand Miester Pycelle, and he’s a lap dog to whomever he perceives to be powerful. When Varys says he wants stability in the realm I believe he’s pulling the greatest play a master of lying can do, tell the truth. Everything he says to Ned in this scene is the truth, not that there isn’t layers to that truth.
The way I see it Varys does want a stable realm, and sees himself as the steward who makes that so. He only wants a Targaryen dynasty in control, or at least a perceived Targaryen dynasty is because that projects a greater pillar of stability to base rule off of. He will do anything, saying, be anyone he needs to be to make that stability possible.

I see Varys as an agent of Order, where Little Finger is an agent of Chaos
Varys personal well being is at risk by visiting Ned, but Varys sees a way to bring order to the current situation for the benefit of the realm and takes the risk for what he values the greater good.
Just one persons take. Thank you for the content

I think this is my favorite original Thrones scene of the entire series. Sean Bean delivers “I learned how to die a long time ago” so well.
And the way he describes Sansa pleading for his life, the tone in his voice… yet when the tables are turned Ned shows himself to be willing to go even further. To confess his “treason” to save his children.
It might just be me projecting onto the scene but I really hope the intent was for Ned to see himself in her actions. For him to be thinking of Jon, Lyanna’s “Promise me, Ned.” and the last time Ned set aside his honor to preserve the life of a child.
I’m not a parent myself but it’s haunting to imagine a child doing that. Trying to protect *you* when it’s your job to protect them, I’d feel like I’d failed them

    I think you’re wrong about Vary’s.
I think he truly does act on behalf of what he thinks is best for the realm but that doesn’t mean he’s always right.

This scene is taken straight from the book. A really great scene, to me, that is original to the show is the scene between Robert and Cersei about their relationship.

Same thing planted in Jon's mind by tyrion when he tells Jon " do you see your sister's bending the knee "

Varys purpose is to protect small folk, like he was. He wants to prevent wars and bloodshed, which have happened over and over in GOT history. Varys wants peace, and protection for small folk. Ned resists not because of honor, but because he knows the Lannisters are evil and must be stopped.

Show Varys and book Varys are totally different let's not get it twisted.
Show Varys is proven as the story unfolds to be selflessly serving the realm. He's only self-seeking in that he does whatever it takes to keep himself alive, SO he can help the people. Ironically show Varys is indeed a hero ❤ Book Varys is another story!

Spoiler alert (is that really needed anymore?) Interesting. This matches with the scene between Jon and Tyrion in the dungeon. Tyrion used Jon's love for his family to convince him to kill Daenerys.

Please analyse a Tywin Lannister scene, they're all fantastic. The scene between Tywin and Olenna Tyrell is a real highlight.

I honestly think the Ned character is/was boring compared to the other characters in the show.
This scene & his willingness to die with honor was outstanding and his best moment.
I know he caved in the final moments but I love how he articulated his position here.

This isn’t that complex, ned made some proud fool hardy mistakes. Hypocritical mistakes
He knows and knew very full well how this kind of thing goes. That’s why he hid Jon snows identity, but he’s so surprised cersei would attempt the same thing (with the same person no less).
Ned wanted to have his cake and eat it too but it doesn’t go like that; still he had plenty of chances to win after that and just expects everyone to baby him 😂.
“Little finger please do something sneaky bcuz im too honorable (but not too honorable to ask u to do it)”
“Varys please get me out of here (even though it’ll get you in trouble)”
Ned’s not a *uckin child; worse he has kids. And he’s been in these kind of situations before. He damn well lied and played the game when it suited him and people he cared about before he shoulda did it again.
Tryna talk all that honor crap, he’s as honorable as the summer is long and winter be coming

Ned didn't know how to play the game of thrones ⚔️ honor is meaningless in King's landing and that's why he didn't make it should've stayed in the north

My favorite asoiaf channel thinks Varys is truthful in serving the realm. I heavily disagree. In the books the scene is a bit different. "Tell me, Lord Varys, who do you truly serve?” Varys smiled thinly. “Why, the realm, my good lord, how ever could you doubt that? I swear it by my lost manhood. I serve the realm, and the realm needs peace."
So he swears on something that he doesn't have anymore and doesn't exist, which he clarifies himself in the same passage. I don't think it gets any clearer than that other than outright explicitly saying he is lying. He even comes of snarky in the text "how ever could you doubt that?"
Only 1 chance he is not lying. He is not truly a eunuch.
and right after the reason Ned gives not to give into Cersei's demand is that his word wouldn't mean anything anymore. Words as hollow as an empty suit of armor.

Is it Cercei’s plan? I see Varys as an agent of Order, where Little Finger is an agent of Chaos
Revisiting this stand alone scene, I see this as Varys’ plan as the only way to regain order in the realm, and he needs to sell Ned first, then Cersei (cuz the King certainly isn’t sold on the value of the deal)
