  • Ultimate video editing comparison between the M1 MAX MacBook Pro vs. M1 PRO MacBook Pro. In this video editing comparison between the M1 MacBook Pro M1 MAX and the M1 MacBook PRO M1 PRO, I exclusively do real world tests between the M1 MAX vs. M1 PRO to find out which computer is better for video editing in Final Cut Pro. Do you need to get the M1 MAX MacBook Pro that has 32 GPU cores and 32 GB of RAM to get high speed video editing performance, or is the M1 PRO MacBook Pro with 16 GPU cores and 16 GB of RAM strong enough for FCP.

      Based on the overall performance of both the variants, it does give a clarity in order to save a 1000 bucks. However, I just wanted to know how both performs when switched between apps within Adobe i.e. After Effects. I'll be cent percent sure then. Thanks in advance.

    Comprehensively crushed it. The differences are in the 2 vs 1 pro res acceleration, and where the 16 extra graphic cores would come into play. Ram isint an issue as swap from the ssd would make up for any shortcomings there. This largely accounts for your results, as both machines have the same 10 core cpus! Great video!

    • @TymekStolarz
      @TymekStolarz  2 роки тому +2

      Thank you :) truthful I just thought those extra GPU cores would have made the max perform a little better than the pro. I think the max also had double the encoders decoders for h.264, 265 etc. Which would have also increased performance in some of the tests, but wasn’t really the case in the real world

    I just found this video and it answered alot of my questions from my previous comment. I have the the same specs on my m1 pro as the one you tested so h.265 is a good format in your opinion for the a7s3? Honestly they all look amazing i just want to get the most out of it and im pretty ignorant. Thanks for the videos man I can't imagine how long these must take.....and I thought editing my videos took a long time

    • @TymekStolarz
      @TymekStolarz  Рік тому +1

      I personally like h.265 because its the only one that i can shoot 10 bit, but also 4:2:0. all the other codecs to get 10 bit you also need to shoot 4:2:2.
      but yes it is a good format i think to shoot in. they are extremely similar to be honest, just a few tweeks here and there, but generally you wont be able to tell the difference between them.
      Haha yes the testing takes forever and then puting everything together into one nice little bow, then optimizing for youtube is another story lol. i've taken a little break as life has changed in the last few months but i need to get back into it.

      Yes i could do that for you, i am just finishing up the M1 MAX compared to the 2020 Intel imac comparison that im trying to get out for tomorrow, once i upload i will test the M1 Pro.
      I have sharpening in Color Finale, but i only have the stock FInal Cut Pro Noise reduction, not Neat Video. and i can try the native final cut pro tracking, i think pixel film studios tracking is still not working perfectly with M1

    • @TymekStolarz
      @TymekStolarz  2 роки тому +2

      @@YBPlaysMusic Hey there :)
      So I completed the tests on the M1 Pro, as well as on my 2020 iMac (5700XT 16gb GPU, 10-core i9 CPU, 64 GB RAM).
      sharpening using the stock final cut pro plugin at max 100 precent setting, for a 53 second clip, the M1 Pro took only 10.68 seconds, and the imac took 25.77 seconds to render
      for noise reduction i used the stock final cut plug in again, and have the settings at the stock values (medium amount, and low sharpness). For the same 53 second clip, the M1 Pro took 18 min, 39 seconds and the imac took 24 min 50 seconds to render. This seems pretty slow for both machines - i wish i had neat video to test how it would work since it seems to be one of the more used plugins.
      Lastly i tracked a face in a 28 second clip on both macs using the stock tracker, and it took the m1 pro 58 seconds, and the imac 1min 9 seconds to render.

    Great video. I am about to buy and while i know 16GB ram and M1 Pro are showing very similar results i wonder how much of this is down to optimization. Max Tech, for example, saw next to no difference in 16 vs 32gb ram, this was true for After Effects for example, then Adobe released an update and it made a big difference. When people do benchmarks on day one, obviously not many apps out there that have had a chance to optimize. Do you think 16GB ram with Pro 10 core CPU 16GB GPU would be enough if creating proxies for fusion in resolve or doing masking in final cut?

    • @TymekStolarz
      @TymekStolarz  Рік тому +1

      I think its definitely a good system for the price. and you will get more processing power then you would have with intel based macs at similar prices. i it'll run smoothly for most things, but id imagine there still might be some times when some things are slower then you want them to be. when i bought my $5,400 iMac in 2020, i thought theres no way it'll ever be slow - ofcourse there still were some times when it was.

    Very very helpful. Most importantly, highly relevant for just video editing. Most comparisons contains way too many benchmarks and other things. I knew some of those didn't apply to me but I had no idea by how much. Your video really answered this question for me! By the way, I saw you tested at 8X speed the scrubbing/playback was identical. What do you think for 30-40X speed (1080P 30FPS H264 IPB)? Do you think M1 Max would playback smoother than M1 Pro? For that fast I usually do photo timelapse but sometimes I need to record it in video format. Currently my basic M1 would not play it at all.

    • @TymekStolarz
      @TymekStolarz  Рік тому +1

      From what i could tell the biggest different came from upgrading the m1 to m1 pro or max. there was less of a performance jump between the pro and max. Its possible that apple optimized the max chip better over the last year and a half since i tested the computers. but i think that my original statement would mostly hold true. that you will see the biggest performance increase going from the base m1, to the m1 pro. and than only a slight improvement to the m1 max.

    Interesting results. From all the other tests we saw, the Max should have been better. I know Apple’s software are optimized for their hardware however, unless there are some portion of the CPU and GPU that aren’t being activated, the close results seems off. The Pro machine is a good overall machine for most people, the Max is that next level machine that professionals want.

    Today I had a proposal to upgrade macbook pro 16" m1 pro 16gb ram 16gpu / ssd 1T to macbook pro M1 Max 32gb ram / 32gpu / ssd 1T.
    I decided to find out the difference to upgrade for 600 USD at the moment.
    I watched all your videos and I think I should use 600 USD to upgrade an LG 4K 27" screen + 2T SSD to better serve my work instead of upgrading to M1 Max.
    Wishing you success and have a good day!

    This video just saved me thousands of dollars. The difference is not worth the higher price tag.

      Thats awesome! I am very glad you found it then haha. I would definitely agree with you. Not worth the massive bump up in price.

    And what about Davinci Resolve?

    • @TymekStolarz
      @TymekStolarz  Рік тому

      Unfortunately given that I personally don't use it, it was not part of my tests. however based off of what I've seen from numerous of other creators, Davinci appears to be quite fast and edit very well.

    Hey if any one could tell which have battery backup more M1 PRO VS M1 MAX

    • @TymekStolarz
      @TymekStolarz  Рік тому +1

      Battery back up - as in which one has more battery life? they would be roughly the same but if you were doing tasks like video editing, the M1 max working a little harder might drain the battery faster.

    Only I can think about those results is the lack of optimization to M1 Max chips of FCPX and he cannot manage to keep all the resouorces busy or.. (only God knows) if there's some kind of sandbagging flag.

    • @TymekStolarz
      @TymekStolarz  Рік тому +1

      optimization could have been the problem - i did run these tests only a few months after the max was released. however i ran the exact same tests on all the computers, no funny business - i make no gain by altering the results.

    I don't know. I would just save the $1,000 and upgrade every 18 months to a new one.

    • @TymekStolarz
      @TymekStolarz  2 роки тому +1

      it would be worth it if there was an actual upgrade, but there isnt haha. in this case saving that 1,000 for the next generation is the way to go for sure.

    I wonder why video content creators continue to buy the m1 max? Espcially the 64gb ram version as those have a 2 month back order.

    • @TymekStolarz
      @TymekStolarz  2 роки тому

      Well personally i thought it was going to be one of the strongest computers Apple had made, and I am assuming others think the same. I never expected to see the results I ended up seeing during my tests. Yea its definitely a long wait - I put my order in on Nov 9, and didn't get it until Dec 20.

      Now the M1 Max w 64 GB ram can be found new for $2300. The base M1 pro about $1700. Saving us all $$ for a new RF lens to have for a decade
