The color grade was like a Tony Scott film so they got it right. Worked this movie as an extra and Denzel made sure to speak to everyone on set. Great actor and overall person.
That's awesome that you got to be an extra in this movie, because it's really good. I just watched it again recently for about the 5th time, and it still holds up. Denzel Washington stands out as an extremely intelligent and classy person, compared to the average movie star. If you ever watch some clips of him answering reporter's questions or what-have-you, it's easy to notice. He doesn't speak in cliches or empty words, at all. I've recently started collecting my favorite movies of his. Yes, there are some I didn't enjoy... Fences, for example.
@@Revolver1981 Well, the OP actually met him and spoke to him, so I'm going to have to go with his opinion on this one. Thanks for your input, it's just not useful due to being pulled out your butt.
Good to see they did right on this film on 4K. I remember watching this over at my Grandma’s during the holidays for some reason. I will pick it up at some point. I still have this movie on HD DVD and occasionally watch it on my HD DVD player. Someone else here mentioned the HD DVD of it had True HD lossless audio. And was one of the first Warner releases to do so. I have the case in hand. And can confirm this is correct. My first Blu Ray ever was Superman Returns. Which I picked up the same day/date I picked up my backwards compatible PS3. Next was Journey To The Center Of The Earth. Here I am all these years and over 14K discs later, STILL COLLECTING new physical media! I even picked up a lot of 15 laserdiscs the other day at a thrift store for $20. That included some pretty rare movies. I love collecting physical media! And I love the fact we are getting such great 4K releases.
I was in college when this hit theaters. I’m so happy they finally got the color grade back to theatrical. This is one of my favorite movies and I’ve always been bummed they didn’t do the warmer grade.
Those comparisons were like night and day. I'm so glad they did a good job on this one... I can't wait to see it... even if the case is blue. Great review man. 😎
I totally agree with you, I buy for the movie, not the plastic case and slipcover. I remember seeing this in 35mm when I worked at the movie theater when it came out.
Some do though and buy multiple copies of the same film just because it has a slipcover/box or two different steelbook versions (like Wakanda Forever has), I just don't get that all especially when Wakanda Forever has exactly the same version of the film on all releases along with the same extras too. You can't watch two discs at the same time and why would you? I've only ever double dipped on films when they were different versions of a film (director's cut etc) or new special features had been added or both had been done. I suppose it's their money to burn, but there may be a time that comes along where other priorities need to come first and can they keep that level of obsession in check?
Fantastic to see it's a great version! I've personally never seen Training Day, but my 4K bluray should arrive tomorrow and looking forward to watching it and hearing it with my Atmos 5.1.2
Did you buy this or was it promotional? I've seen some shots online of this in a 4K case and not that Blu-ray case. You and Cereal both got that Blu-ray case though. Also...you don't know who Pharoah Monch is!! Check him out...incredible artist.
My first Blu-ray I ever watched was Horton hears a Who and I watched it on my brand new day one ps3 on my cruddy very old CRT TV that was held together with duck tape. Training Day was my very first bluray I ever owned too. It was a must own at the time.
Great video. I wonder if you ever watched the HD DVD version of Training Day? It had a Dolby Tru HD soundtrack and was one of the first films from Warner to have lossless audio.
Have this and Rocky collection pre-ordered. I also received Dazed & Confused earlier this week. Haven't been able to watch it yet. Will you be reviewing that classic?
I've ONLY seen the film on the early blu ray release, so this transfer (even seen through the lens of UA-cam compression) is very impressive. I see that this is included in the Warner Bros 100 years box set which I may purchase as soon as I find a buyer for my one remaining kidney! :D
Ok, I know we're talking about training day but being in England I had to import a copy of Coraline and having watched it, Jeff you were right. An awesome film and a great story, the picture was gorgeous and the sound was pretty great too. As for training day waited along time for this one, up there with Denzils best I think. The colour grading sounds interesting can't wait to get my hands on a copy. Jeff keep up the good work, you are the man.👍🏾
Nice review I just ordered from Walmart that sucks they used a regular Blu-ray case you can buy regular black 4k cases on eBay though I definitely will be replacing mine when it arrives
I suppose we still don't know 100% if the Blu Ray case is only on the review copies they sent out early (like yours) or if all of the retail copies will also end up having the Blu Ray case, but I guess we'll see soon enough
Best Buy got a Steelbook for a more "cohesive" package; I went for it instead, because it does feel funny having a blu-ray case instead. That's just me, loved the flick as well.
Good review.. and this is such a great movie. I will have to look into maybe picking up this new UHD version. About the new color grade. Any idea if the director or DP were involved in that? I'm not a fan of just turning up the dials just because they can. If this was the director's vision or was approved by him.. then it sounds like a great thing. Would be nice if they included Fuqua or had a note with the movie about the restoration process. I guess that is the difference between like a Criterion and most of the regular studio remasters. It's worth it to take the extra steps to make sure any new version is still what the director intended (or could have done if they had today's tools). If they are still alive.. get them involved so we can be sure it's a proper remaster (maybe they did that.. but it doesn't sound like they were clear about the remastering process). Thanks for the video.
Maybe they could not source any black cases in time for the release thus the bluray case...or simply a mistake at the factory? Does not bother me either way just delighted to be getting great movies in the highest quality on PHYSICAL MEDIA. Nice review- greetings from Spain.
I understand why they did a blue case because Warner main color is blue and it's nothing to do with being a regular Blu Ray case. I'm sure their other 100 year anniversary exciting will be blue case as well
Yet another great review Jeff, hopefully our RM will deliver tomorrow, if not I'll get it on Sat morning. One of my all time fav Antoine films. Hopefully Tears of the sun will one day get an upgrade.. can't wait to see it again.
I'm glad many out there like this film. I could never get into and I love Denzel. Cool to know you are upgrading it as it was your first BD. I can't remember what my first BD was. I know my first DVD was Jumanji but can't recall my first titles on other formats. I do know I bought BD player and HD-DVD player at the same time and multiple movies until HD-DVD folded.
It’s funny how films & actors effect people. I’m the opposite, not really a Densel fan but he’s great in this & although I don’t watch it often I always enjoy Training Day whenever I do watch it.
Hey Jeff. You were the first person I thought of when this got announced. I saw it in theaters but it was so long ago, I don’t remember the color grading. Looks good to me… better than the DVD and Blu-ray.
It's funny. I don't really remember the first Blu-ray I ever bought. I might have been Invincible that came with my PS3? I do remember my first DVD and that was The Matrix. I've been collecting ever since that one. I've bought the Matrix series probably like 4 times now. Standalone copy DVDs, the big box set, re-bought the box set on blu-ray, then again on 4k blu-ray. I'd say buying the 4k restorations were on par with this movie. The 4k restored the color grading of the original movie and it was amazing to see in 4k. I'll definitely be buying this one too.
I promise you we matched the original release Answer Print. This is the way this movie was supposed to look, that last transfer was, like you said, subpar.
For anyone who is OCD about the Blu-ray case (like me lol), you can buy blank 4K cases online for cheap, and just port over the discs and slip cover. Happy collector again! Lol
Although an excellent movie it’s not one I’m compelled to watch often. I’ll wait for a price drop but glad to hear it’ll be worth it to toss out the old BD.
Very weird you got a blu-ray case i have not seen that. Sounds like a repackaging deal. I bought this from best buy 1 with glossy slipcover and 1 with matte slipcover and both had 4k case. Amazon is sketchy and they use so many different retailers you never know what you are getting.
Buy Training Day 4K: amzn.to/3m3TLyX
In Europe we get the normal black 4K Blu-ray case. Just got mine delivered. Strange it's in a standard blue Blu-ray case in the US.
The color grade was like a Tony Scott film so they got it right. Worked this movie as an extra and Denzel made sure to speak to everyone on set. Great actor and overall person.
That’s awesome friend! Must’ve been a great experience. I hope this 4K transfer brings good nostalgia !
That’s awesome! I’ve got Denzel in my top 2 with Keanu Reeves as favorite people in Hollywood.

One of those films where everything just came together and worked wonderfully. Starting from the screenplay.
David Ayer wrote one hell of a script
And yet if you go on letterboxd and look at reviews, so many people call it “average” and “bad writing.” Man I hate snobby film kids…

Just out of curiosity, what's your favourite HD DVD? I feel like the format came and went so fast, I have no idea what its biggest triumphs were.

Great transfer! Loved it! The audio upgrade was impressive. The atmos track really enhanced the experience. This 4k is almost reference quality.
I agree one of the best audio I’ve heard yet
Pharaohe Monch? He did the Simon says song that Sam Rockwell dances to in Charlie’s Angels, along with a whole bunch of other 🔥 tracks.
This movie deserved this 4k disc years ago.
We matched the Print to make sure the color grade was right. New 4k scan from the OCN.
Just got the 4k and it exceeded expectations. 10/10 picture and sound. BLOWS the bluray out of the water!

Here in Finland steelbook version only option at least in pre orders
Great review . UK version came in a 11mm case with slipcover not a Amaray uk case .
6:54 I recall that TheBluRayCritic got a copy with the black 4k blu ray case so that's odd.
Got mine on pre order for a while now.
looked amazing on blu ray not sure if worth upgrade to 4k?
I saw Training Day in the theater and recall it having a brown/orange color scheme that made it feel like it's taking place during summer.
That’s close to what it feels like here. It’s hot summer in LA vibes
Denzel is my favourite actor getting this is a no-brainer!
GREAT REVIEW MAN been watching your channel for 3 years your the best you tube reviewer out there one of my favourites man

I picked it up a while ago, and it came with the regular 4k case. Everything else you said was fact tho
I'm happy!
I'm still don't understand why it has blue box instead of black
Blue case = blue line / blue wall of silence ;)
Training day takes place in The Matrix and I’m okay with this colour grading
