Kong Return to Skull Island is an upscale so I do not consider it reference. I would only consider the 2 recent movies reference because they are native 4k.
I understand your preference for native 4K when considering a disc as reference-quality-it’s a valid way to evaluate the technical aspects. However, I think the average person watching Kong: Skull Island isn’t going to analyze whether it’s native 4K or an upscale. They’re just looking for something that looks and sounds amazing, and this disc delivers on both counts. The picture quality is crisp, the HDR enhances the vibrant colors and dramatic lighting, and the Dolby Atmos mix is incredibly immersive. For me, that’s what makes it a reference disc-it’s not just about the specs; it’s about the experience. Sometimes focusing too much on technical details can overwhelm the average viewer, and at the end of the day, what matters most is how the movie feels when you’re watching it. Kong: Skull Island is a standout in that regard.

Seems Like lots of people have differing opinions, so I guess it's subjective, but for me when I say reference quality these disc are near perfect discs picture and sound. There are many really great discs, but these ones stood out to me and all around just wowed me. Some people will go into a technical frenzy that certain disc have to be natively shot in 4k to count. I went off of what actually looked and sounded amazing so some are 4k upscaled real standouts. This is my Reference Quality Criteria: Reference quality is more about the perceived quality and presentation rather than the source's native resolution. Factors include: Sharpness and detail. Color accuracy and depth (HDR/Dolby Vision). Grain structure (when applicable). Audio fidelity (e.g., Dolby Atmos or DTS:X). Upscaled content can excel in these areas, particularly when a high-quality restoration is involved, leading to a visually stunning result that qualifies as reference quality.
This is about as close to the real meaning of "reference quality" that I have found on the internet. "Native 4K refers to either a 4K DI or a 4K rescan which makes it true 4K. Many movies use a DI at 2K and the final product is upscale to 4K before being distributed. Therefore not native 4K. Many people will argue that this makes it not true 4K. But that is subjective. Reference disc refers to reference quality. This would be near perfect and the best picture quality you’ll find on a 4K disc. These discs are major upgrades over their standard blu ray counterparts. Some of these have involved rescans of the original film and properly color corrected (I.e the matrix). While others have a 4K DI which adds much more clarity, sharpness and detail than a 2K DI." There are many "reference quality" discs being put on the market today. One of the finest examples of these is the Warner Archive 4k disc of THE SEARCHERS. A truly remarkable transfer.
Exactly and I figure the average person would get overwhelmed with all the technical stuff, so I just went at it from that angle looks and sounds Amazing. A great place to start buying 4k movies. Not only can it be subjective, I found that just because all of our tv's and their settings are different that also plays a factor. I keep hearing great things about the searchers, just added it my list thank you.
There were lots of mixed reviews on that one, major upgrade over the dvd. I think the disconnect comes from person preference on the over look of the film and or tv settings. I found more love for this transfer in online blog style reviews. That’s why I put it in the bonus, I think it’s a really worth checking out.

You dont mention Auro3D (have you heard it?) as the most credible improvement to poor audio mixing. Some atmos movies are quite lame… its astounding how the studios cut corners on audio… it can be such a shame sometimes, sound is more important than picture imo
@ usually when I have watched any 3d movie after a few minutes the effect goes away. I don’t know why, but I suspect it has to do with wearing glasses.
Because 3D isn't meant to always call attention to itself. As a film goes on, you notice the depth which immerses you to the point where you forget you're watching 3D because you're drawn into the film. Its not all about things coming at you, although that's fun when it happens. (I'd recommend Scorceses HUGO to see what 3d can do.) And I wear glasses too.
Edge of Tomorrow almost made the cut, but it came up in my movies based off Anime video. I’m pretty sure I called it a reference disc then. Haha glad I’m not the only one.

Blade Runnuer 2049 might be reference for 4K as a resolution but in terms of the HDR is a lie. Based on this fact I do not consider Blade Runner 2049 is not reference.
I understand where you’re coming from, as everyone’s viewing experience can vary based on their setup and preferences. However, I’ve always found Blade Runner 2049 to be one of the best examples of how 4K UHD can enhance a film. The picture quality is stunning, with Roger Deakins’ cinematography coming through crystal-clear, showcasing incredible detail, even in complex scenes. The HDR, in my opinion, enhances the movie’s aesthetic. The dynamic range really brings out the contrast between the deep shadows and neon highlights, giving the film its signature cyberpunk look. Of course, some might feel the HDR implementation isn’t as aggressive as in other films, but I think its subtlety suits the mood and tone of the movie perfectly. It’s definitely one of my reference discs for demonstrating 4K and HDR!
@@d_manoil1647 💯 these are films I would use to demonstrate or show of my whole system amazing picture and sound.
