No need. Pretty much all of the boutique labels are doing superb work with their releases. That's because physical media is still the backbone of their business (more so than the studios). Some labels have had issues with their releases, sure, but more often than not ... they mostly always come through. Any problem discs are usually addressed fairly quickly (from boutique companies).

I am frankly shocked that both The Aviator (the Scorsese film) and Gravity have not received 4k releases. I have already bought The Aviator on blu ray, but I don't want to buy Gravity yet. I also hope they bring back a lot of features from the Diamond Luxe edition, including the presentation of Gravity without the score (I do love the score, but I am curious about how much more realistic it would be with only what the characters hear).

Though I still think the blu-ray version is pretty strong (thanks in part to my Sony 4K TV's upscaling capabilities) too. But unless it got a bad review on here, I'd get the 4K set for sure!

Good call! Sony has a history of great transfers going back to the days of Superbit DVDs. Companies like Disney are bad news for physical media because they have the power to acquire other studios and monopolize a huge chunk of the market. Now that Disney is releasing their IMAX titles on streaming, expect others like HBO MAX to do the same. Even Sony is feeling the pressure, as they’ve signed a deal with Netflix to release upcoming films on the platform.

The hardest part for the studios is how to manage their cash cow. They have the goods but many are falling short. They have a dated marketing system in roll out and that applies to everything especially quality. The mind set is that streaming would replace everything and all they have to do was collect the money. The Pandemic was forcing us to streaming then it did an about face when the realization that physical media is still here.
It took awhile but it has a foothold in the market world wide they did not expect. Streaming is the Fast Food of media. Mindless consumption of flashy movies regardless of quality. The Left and Right hand of the Studios does not talk to each other. Your ranking is on Target. When have issues in Studio it permeates its problems and lack of focus. The best analogy is Like a kid forced to take the trash out. They reluctantly do with little focus on how to take it out. This roll out of 4k these past 2 years has forced the studios to do what they did not want to do.Some have risin to the situation others the focus is myopic and many are slipping in quality. Like with True Lies and the Abyss were ready to a roll out and as understand know transfer in the end was made or some were made and are dated .The Terminator 2 that should never have been released because of quality missteps. I'm rambling. Now with the discs being recalled on many for various mistakes. etc...
The rise and fall depends on their perception of everything and one miscalculated focus in this environment. It could be curtains for some of these studios. The mistakes are world wide. I just stating to you the obvious. But not to obvious to the studios. Good Video 😎

I pretty much agree with this whole list. While Sony doesn't have the greatest catalog of titles, what they do put out (on 4K especially) is incredible. Their Atmos tracks, especially, are leaps and bounds above any other studio I've heard. My wife and I watched the Resident Evil collection recently, and we're now going through their Underworld boxed set, and those have some of the best Atmos tracks I've ever heard as far as really giving you the spatial audio.

Awesome and very insteresting video Jeff. Kudos! It's full of valuable insights based on your extensive experience of physical media. I agree with your list's ranking. It's funny how the greediest corporations that value profits over quality find themselves at the bottom half of the list.
It's not surprising that Sony takes the top spot. The Japanese are true audio-video enthusiasts. The Japanese market is known for supporting the widest range of physical media in the audio segment. Sony has had a tradition of quality for decades now, introducing many audio-video innovations that were arguably more technologically advanced than their competitors. For example, technologies such as the Walkman, Betamax, Blu-ray and the CD/SACD (in a partnership with Philips). Even in the TV market, they take LG made OLED display panels and produce top tier TVs.

May be these sets were not meant for the 4k physical media collectors on lower budgets. Limited release of the Columbia Classics give the studio a better turnover than someone like me who has to wait till the 4k blurays go down in price before I can hit 'buy it now'. I still enjoy physical media I just have to wait for a longer period to own it.

  • @Thecatdrums3

Every major studio does a great job with transfers. Only Disney & WB have issues with some older film; that said all of them are awful with the original audio.
Only Sony cares enough to include original audio on 4K. Disney did it for ratatouille and that’s it, WB included it for clockwork orange which was the first time they’ve done so, universal has no older films on 4K with original audio same as paramount & lionsgate.
If they want people to care about these films constantly hanging how they sound and adding dnr or grain removal is t going to do it. They are just forcing people to buying dvds & vhs/LD by constantly changing or adding to a films already finished product.
If you buy a new 4K release of an old film make sure it’s a recent Sony release so you aren’t getting ripped off.
Arrow video is the only company that is constantly delivering releases worth buying. Everyone else should just outsource to them period.

  • @ijslandernl
    @ijslandernl 2 роки тому +5

The first and last place were completely obvious. No discussion possible about those two spots. Disney is just absolutely terrible and Sony has the absolute best transfers.
Lionsgate gets good remarks from me for having the best artwork. To me packaging is very important and their releases always look amazing. The Steelbooks they've been putting out recently look absolutely insane. However, even their normal Amaray releases are just amazing. They've got great artwork on their slipcovers and where other studios have these big black and silver banners at the top, Lionsgate is the only major studio not using these big banners, but just having very small text in the corner telling you if the particular release is a 4k Blu-ray or a regular Blu-ray. Their packaging is just the best.
If we're not talking about the quality of the transfers or packaging, but only the enjoyment factor of the movies themselves, my vote will go to Warner Bros. I think their movies account for the biggest share of my collection, as I think their movies are the best. Just pre-ordered yet another of their releases, namely Dune on 4k Blu-ray.

When it comes to transfers, Sony hands down! Catalog titles look great. Even a less popular title like Last Action Hero looks great in 4K. Some like Into the Spider-verse or Hellboy (2004) are some of the best the format has to offer. Their support is great, although I think they could put their boxset titles on separate releases. I don't think too many want Oliver and Sense and Sensibility in the same set with Taxi Driver and Stripes.
Disney's support is pretty weak. There are some really solid releases like Inside Out (the best for picture imo) or some Marvel titles, but their releases for the Star Wars movies could be better in regards to picture. Also, their catalog title support in particular is awful. Since the beginning of the year, Speed and Who Framed Roger Rabbit are the few they even put out.

    Picture Quality: Sony
    Audio Quality: WB
How can you say that the WB quality dipped recently, when they released Godzilla vs Kong, The Suicide Squad and are about to release Dune? Those discs have one of the best video and audio quality you can get

Great video, Jeff. I put Paramount at #2 and Universal at #3 because Universal fails on the design level. Jaws 4k and Back to the Future 4k had some of the worst graphic design I've seen.

i think your list is pretty accurate those mad max 4k Q.C. ISSUES are annoying, especially since i ran out and bought on release day. you should definitely do boutique labels for me that would be a more interesting video i would like to know who you think has better packaging personally i like criterion but arrow is pretty good to and if there are others I'd like to here about them

I would have to 100% agree with number 1 Sony have always done the best ever since the DVD's back in the Early 2000's and I am mind blown with their Television's to this day I mean their 2004 1080i CRT TV still holds up to this Day especially their 1080p TV's from way back in 2008 and their 4K TV's just much better experience I can actually enjoy 480i DVD's most of the time without Interlacing issues where as Samsung and LG I get A ton of Interlacing issues and terrible Upscaling of the 480i DVD's unlike Sony who does A mind blowing job at nearly everything.

Terminator 2 wasn't Cameron's fault that's the greed of the physical media distributors.. the 4K remaster was supervisor by Cameron for a 3D re-release overseas not for a solely 4k presentation 😢

Absolutely bang on. Couldn't agree more with everything you say. I would add that some studios also do right by legacy consumers by including object-based sound mixes on blu ray discs. I get that studios want to justify charging £25 for a 4k disc over the £15 for a blu, and an improved sound mix is part of that, but it always p***ed me off when I collected 3D movies (which were more expensive than regular blu) and they had 5.1 mixes, whereas the 4k disc has Atmos or DTSX. I'm looking at you most of all, Disney, because you are the worst.
Sony discs are almost a guarantee of top quality, Lionsgate are hot and miss, some Paramount stuff is dodgy, and Universal can make big mistakes (Jurassic Park?), but time and time again, Sony deliver the goods.

I believe Sony also does well with their TV series, like Breaking Bad & Better Call Saul. The Blu-rays for those two shows are packed with bonus features, something you don't see with television shows

I'm not sure how true this is but, I heard the rights for all the Regency Films reverted back to whoever the original owners are and Heat was one of them. That's why the release is still M.I.A. here in the U.S.

The problem with Lionsgate is that, for some of their 4K titles, they inexplicably decided to use filmouts as a source instead of 2K DI's, like every other studio does, resulting in crappy transfers, inferior to the 1080p Blu-rays.
4K titles affected, that I know of:
    • Crank
    3:10 to Yuma
    • Rambo (2008)
    • Daybreakers
    • Kick-Ass
    • The Lincoln Lawyer
    • Conan the Barbarian (2011)
    • Dredd

Gandhi has an Amazon exclusive limited edition 4k UK release. Totally agree with Sony at No1. I think perhaps they didn’t do big enough run for Columbia Classics Vol 1 but I caught it at release thankfully. Props for Sony for splitting the longer films over two discs in the set. Disney should be last their 4ks aren’t that special.

great job as usual. Insightful and all the rest. Bottom line w physical media and such is getting the word out to friends and such to what these folks are missing. we need more people to know this so they will be compelled to buying these 4k's. This is no easy task. Most people don't even know how to turn off the soap opera effect setting on the tv's. Over a thanksgiving dinner table trying to explain HDR and ATMOS and other tech specs is met w eye rolls. I have friends who buy the LG OLED only to just steam inferior stuff without knowing that if they just bought a Sony UB 700 for $160 or so there viewing would be upgraded ten fold. I need a video w bullett points to convince these folks to get into the game. I don't know enough to defend my argument at the table. without more people getting into the game, the studios have no incentive for physical media.

I hate to admit this given the amount of money I have sank into the MCU 4K steelbooks but you are right. I couldn't believe the quality difference when I watched an MCU movie on my friends Disney+. 4K's are ridiculously expensive but their quality is no match for streaming services.

I do wonder where is MGM? I think they’ve had some considerably good transfers, whether the Blu-rays they release themselves, or that they lease out to others, or both (see Robocop, their MGM remaster of the director’s cut, plus also the Arrow theatrical/directors cut set).

    I personally disappointed with Paramount.
Here is a couple of examples.
Recent Star Trek set has no sound upgrade. Less special features than previous sets. The 4Ks are not much better than Blu Rays that come with the set.
Days of Thunder. No sound upgrade and zero special features. I have seen documentaries on You Tube so they do exist. I just think Paramount can be lazy with what you get.

Yea I agree With you 100 percent on how Disney feels about physical media bc if you look at what Disney has in as there catalog titles that have not gotten any release other then DVD release and what make us fans of physical media mad that Disney just don't care what fans of physical media want to own on blu-ray from Disney catalog titles and what makes it worse is that other small labels like Kino has even ask Disney if they can License some of there catalog titles to be released on blu-ray and Disney hast just said they have no interests in licenseing any of there catalog titles to anyone bc Disney just want all there catalog titles on digital or just Disney plus unless it is a newer film or a mcu film and on top of that Disney owns all of fox catalog titles now and it is just a shame that us fans of physical media will never get to see some of our favorite catalog titles on blu-ray from Disney or fox
