Thank you so much for PMC Bronze test from an entry-level shooter! I spent 2 visits to the range with this ammo in my Rem 700. I was consistently getting 2+ MOA groups at 100 yards using bench rest bags which made me seriously question my aptitude. Going to try FGM .308 Sierra Match King 168 now!

    • @ReviewThisThing

FGM .308 168 gr worked like a charm! All groups within 1 MOA now! Also for the lulz, I tried Igman .308 147 gr FMJ which produced 2-3 MOA on average. There are many good reviews for Prvi Partizan Match .308 155 Grain, so I will buy and try those next time at the range. I aim to find optimal economy precision rounds for entry-level training, but it looks like "economy" and "precision" are mutually exclusive properties.

Backfire and Ron Spoomer did a recent video about mixing traditional lead core bullets and copper bullets like the barnes. Ron had recommended cleaning the barrel back to bare metal before shooting a copper bullet or they won't shoot as good. Backfire tried it in his gun and shot the copper bullets much better. Something about mixing the copper bullets and guilding metal from the lead core bullets did not work well.

My favorite thing to do is do a 3 shot group at 100, 150, 200, 250, and 300.
For my 350 legend, the hornady 165 FTX shoots the best at 100 yards, 3 shots in the same hole. But when I go out to 150-200, they open up to a 7" group.
With the winchester deer season 150 XPs, I'm holding a 1" group from 100 out to 300 yards.

I've had very similar results with my Criterion barreled 308. It will only hold 1.5" groups with the 178's, 2" with 195s. Out of all the bullets that I've tried so far it liked the Hornady CX and Barnes TTSX bullets the best. For target shooting the 168 Sierra MatchKing shoots 1/2" groups. I'll have to test some of those Norma rounds, they looked promising 👍

Both my 30-06 and 308, 150 and 165 grain are tack drivers. The only 150.grain bullet in 30-06 is crappy SST and interlock. I think the same goes for the 308. Like you I am also a big fan of the 308 Winchester. I have more rifles chambered for it than any other. I am planning a trip to my local range the week before Thanksgiving to perform the same experiments you did here with my Howa 1500 and my Bergara B14 Hunter Wilderness both in 308 Win. The ammo I will test is Winchester Super X 150 grain, Hornady American Whitetail 165 grain, Federal Fusion 165 grain, and Norma Whitetail 150 grain. I also have Winchester Super X 180 grain, Remington Core-Lokt PSP 180 grain and Sako Super Hammerhead 180 grain but I feel these are a bit much for the size of the deer in my area so I will reserve them for when I go after bigger game out west or in the northeast US. To answer the question you asked the viewers about which round we would recommend on your hunt I would say outside of the PMC all of them are good choices in terms of precision. So maybe just go with whatever is the lowest cost per box and is most available at the moment.

@@ReviewThisThing I will be sure to report back my results. While no two rifles are exactly the same in terms of what ammo they like sometimes it's helpful to know about really awful standouts like the PMC you tested. I had a similar experience with Browning BXC in 270 Win last year. It shoots terrible out of most of my 270 Win rifles. So it's not a round I would recommend to others.

So I was at the range today and tested the ammo I mentioned earlier on my two 308 rifles. The Norma Whitetail 150 grain grouped the best in both the Howa 1500 and the Bergara B14 Hunter Wilderness with both grouping at close to 1 moa. A close second was Hornady American Whitetail 165 grain with about 1.5 moa. The Winchester Super X and Federal Fusion did not fare so well in my testing. I have to admit Norma makes a good product.

If you set your scope with one brand and weight, do you have to reset it using another? How much will it be off? I use Federal Fusion and Non Typical 150 grain .308. Both shoot the same and are rated at 2820 fps muzzle. I want to try Remington Core Lokt Tipped 150 grain but it is rated at 2840 fps. How much difference is it going to make?

    • @ReviewThisThing
      @ReviewThisThing  Рік тому +1

I can make a big difference. Try the Core Lokt and see what you think. This gun doesn’t care for those as much and shot bigger groups. From what we found, if it moves the zero point, it won’t likely won’t be more than a couple of inches at 100, but if you change ammo, I’d re-zero it. That way you make sure there are no wounded animals but clean kills!

My choice is Barnes due to no lead in meat, great performance and full penetration.. Though i wouldn't scoff at getting one with any of those other bullets. Their all bonded, so the lead intrusion wont be much if there is any. The only ones i wont hunt with are the non bonded cup and core exremely cheap ones, unless its my only option, or ballistic thin walled hunting bullets designed for varmints. The one you need to choose is the one YOU feel most confident in using and trust. Have a great day RTT.

ammo go sour real fast and them rounds that went sour wont get scrap unless there is a danger of a gun blowing up.

I'd still say around 185-190gr a 1:10" 308 rifle will fire the best groups. Based on information on the internet. In the tests you might have had better grouping for 150 by chance, and worse for 185, by chance.
Secondly three shots is really easy statistically show wrong way in both directions. False positive or false negative. Five shots would not be a lot, but still statistically multiple times safer.

I would go with the tipped core lokt 150 grain for 2 reasons . First you can find them almost anywhere. 2nd They are much more consistent now sense vista took over the company! Vista also owns federal ammo as well! Remington and Federal , both are sammi complied! The Last I checked nosler, norma, and barns ammo are not. The tipped core lokt also has a higher bc than the original core lokts if you need to make a longer shot!

I use 3006 on really big stuff or 338 win. In my two 308s I hunt moose, elk , killed a bison with head shot. I have some 165 remington tipped corelokts but used these in 150 exclusively now and I have about 10 different loads for 308 including handloads and monolithics. I shot a moose last year at 275 yds in ribs he lungs were soup and bullet passed through with no recovery. With the 150 corelokt tipped. Moose took 2 steps and nose dove. These load shoot 1/4 " moa and I test on water jugs at 50 yards. Most 150s stop in 3rd jug unless all copper. Most 180s in 5th jug. These stop in 6th jug blow up 1st jug and split 2nd and 3rd jug. On game and the water jugs and for accuracy I have never seen a bullet expand as well, penetrate and group as well as the corelokt tipped 150 grain the 165s stop in 4th jug. They got this right and I do not like the corelokt tipped in 06 penetration is way below 180 corelokt psp and grouping 1.5" vs PSP same hole at 100 yds . PLus in chrono corelokted tipped in o6 180 grain 2615 fps advertised 2740. Corelokt 180 psp in 3006 22 " 2688 and advertised 2700. 308 win chrono 22" 150 corelokt tipped 308 2791 and advertised 2840. In my heavy 24 " barreled sniper class rifle they chrono at 2851. in snipter rifle 1/8" groups all day.

I killed a pile of deer with 150 grain BTs back when they were a Federal Premium loading. Then I got into reloading and killed some more with the 150s. Then I switched to 125 grain ABs. I load them in .308 Win and 300 blk. Good whitetail bullets that have less recoil in the .308(nothing has any recoil in the blk...lol).
I'm loading some 130 ttsx for this year in a new ultra light .308. Should be an efficient deer dispatcher. I'm going to download them some to around 2800.
The 115 grain ttsx in 6.5 Grendel have been impressive. My daughter killed a big doe last year; passed through, down in 15 yards, and almost zero bloodshot meat.
