      I consider polyphia to fall under the sub category of math rock. Other bands which may be considered “math rock” being Chon or Fall Of Troy which sound somewhat similar. Still very unique bands.

      Animals as Leaders pre-dates polyphia but doesn't have the pop/electronic vibes. Chon, Plini, Covet are 3 that I find to be lighter instrumentals more often. Berried Alive has some instrumental songs that are insane but charles has been learning to sing and scream as their progression goes. Animals as leaders I'd say check out the song Woven webs first or Monomyth.

      Yeah, Frederik nailed it with Unprocessed. Their lead guitarist, Manuel, is a beast. I would say on par with Tim. And the rest of the band is also insanely talented, especially their bassist. They've changed their sound quite drastically over the last couple of years as well, so would be interesting to get your take on their sound change. Older songs like Abandoned, Fear, and Prototype are great. Then newer stuff like deadrose, Portrait, and Fabulist will show you the direction they're going now. They also have a song they dropped as they first started shifting their sound a couple years back called Real which features Clay (bassist) and Tim from Polyphia.

    Have you yet noticed how Tim uses the 3rd bar of every chorus as the “flex💪” bar? If you’re listening for it, it’s obvious and is super satisfying when you catch it in new songs they make.

    The way Clay fills space with cymbal work rather than excessive fills is something a lot of drummers should take note of.
    Especially with those low resonating stacks he’s got that give the trashy sound. Do a fill in them instead and it sounds miles better. And more fresh compared to most drummers who overuse Tom’s.

    There are two other instrumental prog rock bands that I think fit most closely with Polyphia's style: Plini, and Intervals. Intervals actually had vocals on earlier albums but eventually went full instrumental. Plini is really where it's at though.

    Thank you for using actual music vocab in your analysis! I've played flute for over 10 years and it bugs me when someone releases a "song breakdown" and proceeds to pause the song multiple times only to say "that part was great". Yes, I know it was great, I'm here for you to tell me something I don't know yet!
    I'm not actively playing an instrument right now, but still trying to sharpen my ear. Polyphia and other bands with rhythmic complexity give me a lot to study. What you said about the drummer and bassist playing deep in the pocket gives me something specific to listen for next time :D

  • @FreakTrump
    @FreakTrump Рік тому +7

    Been watching since you first discovered polyphia and really appreciate your breakdown and appreciation of music, I don’t really comment much but thought I’d throw in 2 song requests to possibly see you break them down
    A band that is similar in terms of intricacy but has more of a “happier” tone than polyphia is:
    CHON - Waterslide
    And the other is more of a metal/death core vibe, but I suggest this only because the drummer and singer are insanely talented and thought you’d enjoy:
    Slaughter to prevail - demolisher
    In one of your videos you commented that there is sooo much music to appreciate and I couldn’t agree more, broaden the scope and listen to a wider scope, seeing you fall in love with jinjer was really cool Ahaha,
    Have a good one mate

    • @FreakTrump

    This is my least favorite Polyphia song they've put out in years. Too many guitar layers on this one, you really can't hear what's going on for once. Don't care for the effects either. The melody for the hook is really good and could've been capitalized on a lot better.
