The second Henson starts playing the guitar chase looks shocked, confused and amazed, and that's literally exactly what my face looked like when I found Polyphia
I think my face is still stuck like that.
Dude, totally. I just found them last week. It's totally conventional guitar playing, music. Shocked, confused, amazed. Yea, yea me too lol
@@ChaseCarneson and then you haven't seen them do this live...
Yeh me too, but not in the way most people are about it...I just don't get what all the fuss is about?? Must be a guitarist thing, or a new age thing🤮🤮
@@simonilett998 it's about technique and time signatures, very hard technical stuff, I saw the transposed scores of some of their songs and it's all theoretically perfect but even for trained musicians extremely hard to execute correctly (it's like the guitarist's Bela Bartok, - piano music - you hate it first and then you grow to love it because it's just so... oddly perfect in it's own right)
“ I wasn’t prepared for this “. Yeah we all said that 😂
I discovered this band and this song this morning. After listening to it like 30 times today, I'm still not prepared.
@@ThyLLiS- lol hear it live...prepare to be disappointed.
@@TheEvilWithinKevin Actually I've seen some lives, i found it not that bad. I've seen some people destroying their ability to play live, so I was prepared to a desaster, but it's actually not bad.
@@TheEvilWithinKevin is an unbelieveble hard song to play. Is so tight they have to be perfect timed to play this live. Give them some time and they will mastered it. They are music monsters
@@TheEvilWithinKevin still better than studioforce
The drummer is switching between triplets, sixteenths and quarter notes and whatnot while still maintaining perfect BPM (with everyone else being on sync, crazy) and has that trap/hip-hopish vibe. It's soo goood
Good shout friend. Yeah it's intense.
I think it's telling that no matter how good the 2 guitars are, the song ends with the 2 guitars being drawn into the drums and the bass elevated with the drums closing it out. Everyone with a music background I've seen talk about it has brought attention to the drums but i haven't seen that aspect of the video mentioned and i believe it was done on purpose. They're in a house of worship and being pulled into the drums. Great stuff
it sounds like the dummer is on a new rift the entire track
To me, the drummer & bass player and their interrplay through the track are the standout performances. Tim and Scott are fantastic, but the rhythm just blows my mind.
@@gerrykavanagh rhythm section always has more fun
Most reactors: plays half the song looking shocked and amazed.
Chase: Actually pauses and breaks down what he hears every minute. And goes back so we miss nothing, but also so we can hear what he does!
I Love listening to this guys breakdowns of songs! He’s not just a reaction channel, this guy takes us on the journey with him! 👌
I really really appreciate this. Thank you so much for the kind words
This is exactly what I want to say about Chase
Same
First video I've seen of Chase. Was gonna say "stop pausing the video so often" but at the end I really liked what he did. Probably one of the best reactions I've seen. Very knowledgeable of music too
First time seeing one of his reviews. He easily earned another subscriber
They do this live too. The way Tim Henson writes his riffs is insane as well. He writes synth lines in midi, not caring about guitar grips, and then just finds ways to play it on guitar. So cool.
The two guitarists for Polyphia actually played on a track from Babymetal's newest album.
oh shoot which one?
Brand new day is the track. It's my favorite one from the album
@@McMan12345671 'Brand New Day' - It's the one that sounds like a Polyphia song with Babymetal doing backup vocals lol
Wow, now that you mention it...
Now I know, I know 😂
"That must be an absolute nightmare to play live"
TFW they play it perfectly as their soundcheck lmao
Yeah they do in that but there's so many performances where they're either too drunk or just not practiced enough. It's hard to play it this well.
@@MonticArckeys Tim said on his stream that they did it on purpose. The drunk play i mean. I forgot which stream he said that
Watched them play this song live. Can confirm. Equally as good.
Yea except when they tour and they are drunk/high out of their mind 🤣🤣🤣 they did not care at ALL during their first tour but from what I hear their recent shows are really good
ua-cam.com/video/o-cs1AxOBE4/v-deo.html
On the bass solo those are not drum samples, that’s Clay Gober doing ghost pop notes on his bass
It's both. It borrows that element from metal where certain chugs are enhanced by the kick to give it more punch. But you're right about the ghost notes, and I don't think the kicks are sampled at that point. He demonstrates it a lot on his Instagram.
Also those high notes arent samples either its tim doing harmonics
Ooooh, Chase hasn't heard Polyphia before? This is gonna be good.
he should hear Chon...
There's something so satisfying about watching someone else discover something you like. It's as if you're rediscovering it all over again.
@@KeeperOfKale222 tru tru
LOL I was thinking the same thing
Early polyphia was shit tho with their boring riffs and licks
Chase is like the only person I've seen on youtube who appreciates this song like how it deserves to be appreciated
I remember my first exposure to The Grateful Dead. At a point when they had been with each other for decades. They knew each others skill level and rabbit holes so well...they sounded like an intricate Celtic knot. They all held an end of the rope, they all knew how to dance their instruments through the design of the knot. That took DECADES.
These CHILDREN are doing it before they are 40. They are all younger than 40, right? Frightening. Delightful!
I think the oldest is maybe 30. They aren't even close to 40. Babies.
i grew up classically trained. violin … my first live band concert was a phish show and it left such a lasting impression on me how long they could jam out and basically improve for hours and hours. changed my life.
Finally a reaction channel that actually has a point/purpose
I don't best, Sam
I really think you should check out Plini. Another instrumental artist.
"Cascade" is a great song.
Or
"Paper Moon"
"Electric Sunrise"
"Handmade Cities"
Also Chon!
@@DylboBaggins92 Agreed. That 7/4 time signature is so much fun to jam to
every piece matters! chills every time
+1 for electric sunrise, one of my faves
Papers moons is one of the best musical compositions I have ever heard.
Incorporating natural harmonics into a melody in the way Tim does is absolutely insane.
It's beautiful. It's intricate. It's just amazing.
It's immense
I've listened to GOAT countless times but it still amazes me...very beautifully written I would say
One of the most professional reactions I've seen so far. Thanks for that.
Thank you my friend. That's a really nice comment to read.
The way your mouth fell open and your eyes opened up when the first riff started is the reason I watch reactions.
Haha couldn't help myself
That first face when the guitar started was priceless
"Yas" is another banger by them
I've watched your reaction vid now 3 times, just to see a mirror reaction to my own. This was my initial exposure to polyphia, and Chase as well, totally satisfactory!!
love,love,LOVED IT!!💯💥😎
I enjoyed how they let each of the band members shine through out the song and then the incredibly intricate structure at the end of the song where you had gaps for the guitar, bass, drums, and that sample they brought back from the beginning. It was like lattices with a bunch of holes in them, but when you overlayed them all, they filled the space.
13:18 I had the privilege of seeing them play live in London this February after discovering them only a month before. They opened with G.O.A.T., and, to be perfectly honest, it was just like the recording, bar the obvious fact that live mixing is not creating a single song but rather leveling single instruments together. Absolutely stellar performance, an amazing atmosphere, and possibly the nicest crowd ever even down to a properly painful mosh pit which was only created when Scott LePage (the second guitarist to come in on this track) said during the intro to G.O.A.T. "Now make a hole in the middle of the floor and wait for the drop. YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO, MOTHERFUCKERS"
This aint a reaction video, this is an analysis. 10/10
I appreciate you.
Oh yeah I instantly got a big smile when you said you never listened to them. Knowing you're a musician I knew it was going to blow your mind, like it did with mine. The best thing is, even do it's so intricate it's still very melodic and memorable. Check out Tim Henson when you want to feel like you suck at guitar (the 'young looking' guitarist - he is 27 btw).
Went to see these guys live in Toronto last December and this was their opening song. Kickass show! My personal favourite has to be Euphoria, slightly older track from them.
Most of the songs from that album is my favorite
The first song i ever heard from them, so glad it popped in my recommended
I saw them live in Dublin... Very very impressive!
I was there too haha. They were incredible. Found it hilarious when Scott said "I forgot the lyrics to this next one so you'll have to sing along". Then they immediately played Champagne and the whole crowd was humming every note
You're my favorite reactor by far. I love rewatching your reactions because I feel like you're experiencing what I am but I also get to learn so much from you. Thank you for doing this channel 😊
Appreciate that Jamie. Thank you so much.
Probably the best reaction vid to this song I’ve seen all around. Genuine, knowledgeable, and well put.
Thank you very much!!!
No, thank you.
Polyphia dropped a new track about 2 weeks ago called playing god. Loved your breakdowns of the other tracks you’ve done. This one would absolutely blow your mind!
Bruh, no lie, this is exactly how I reacted when I first heard them. I love the look of sheer joy on your face at the end of the playthrough, much how I looked as well.
The best part about seeing them live is clay the bassist before some songs going sing along if you know the words
Singing along to champagne while having a dance party is the most fun ive ever had in the pit lmao
woah...woah...woah... That was the most interesting thing i've heard in a bit. More of these guys!!!!!!! Awesome
Definitely more of these guys coming out soon.
honestly it's the single greatest groove I've ever heard.
His reaction as soon as Tim starts playing his reaction is priceless
lmao his reaction. Nobody is ready for that first guitar intro.
Never ready
If this is your Jam you should experience Animals As Leaders - Cafo. Where Polyphia still feels like a conventional song Animals As Leaders is a step into the abstract. Also Tobin Abasi almost never used a pick which is insane
Lippincott is my favorite from them. Such a GROOVY bass line.
Upvoting this! There's a few bands like AIL that I've avoided suggesting to Chase because I assumed he's heard them before. But if he hasn't heard Polyphia then I think I need to re-evaluate that
Exactly what I was thinking!!!!....
Tosin is probably the greatest living guitarist.
Q3 upvote
There's something so amazing about watching someone else discover something you like. It's like you're rediscovering it all over again.
i must say, ive watched A LOT of musical reaction, many for this song alone. And you sir have provided the best reaction. You caught many little things that most professionals would have missed. You sir have a thorough understanding of music and have earned my subscription. The technicality of Polyphia is absurdly rare.
Really appreciate that Micah. Thanks for watching and for the sub. Hopefully you'll find a bunch more videos to enjoy on the channel.
Probably the best reaction vid I've seen, love how u actually properly analyze the musicianship. Most are just like "wow sounds cool".
Thanks for that man. I do my best.
Thankyou so much for this reaction video. I've never heard of Polyphia, but if i had heard this before most of it would have gone straight over my head without your video. I Need to play this music through again straight away.
Glad you liked it. I'm really amped on these guys
@@ChaseCarneson , I've played this track through a few times and stopped actually watching the video (although it is clever in its self) and it just gets better and better.
MOST interesting short piece. Thanks, Chase, for introducing me to Polyphia. Liked your comments on Band Maid, too.
I love seeing people get excited about songs the same way I do. This is an awesome reaction and breakdown.
When the song is so good Chase has to turn a review into a motivational video to keep people from going '''fuck this, those people are guitar gods, it's impossible, I quit....'
Absolutely phenomenal breakdown man. These guys are from my hometown of Dallas Texas in the states. And Ive known them for quite a while You've got a great ear and picked up on a lot of stuff that most people miss.
I'm a guitarist of 30 years and I'm stunned at the performance of the drummer. So refreshing to hear a new sound.
This is by far, the best evaluation that I’ve heard for ANY “musician” type of videos. You understood EVERYTHING that was going on in this video, including the effects. I’ve heard so many people try to say that this is just related to triggers, fake, etc. You understand how complicated this is, but it’s the syncopation, their musician ability, the balance/mix, and just being there together. I agree with you that I’d hate to see all these layers, and mixing them; it’s amazing. I know that it would take years for my friends and I could each do this individually (maybe), but to pull it all together after that (UNGODLY!!) Glad you liked it. They do have a live version, listen to it. Lol.
You've done it!! You've found my favorite genre of music for yesterday now, new instrumental progressive metal. And Polyphia are asking the best in my opinion... And so young like you said. Please continue to react to these types of videos. Plini, Sithu Aye, Intervals, David Maxim Micic, Jakub Zetecki, Owane.......
I'm so happy to find a channel that really digs deep with the nuances of my favorite music. I'm subscribed and looking forward to more. Cheers!!
Nice one. Welcome to the team, Quinton. Lots more to come 💪👌
Love the videos, Chase! Thank you for expanding my mind!
30 years of love for music and this song is the first to bring me to tears with sound alone. With no words to make you feel like their talking to you. Absolute perfection. They are the greatest I’ve ever heard
This is some of the most legit3musical analysis in a reaction video i have ever seen. Earned my subscription
Appreciate that. Welcome to the team 👌🙌
Man I love this song and this band. They’re crazy talented. Watching them live is mind blowing.
Just saw your bio, and wow Blindside is a name from my past... They were supporting at my first ever gig - Disturbed at the Brixton Academy.
Amazing band
I am still continuously mind blown by this song! Every time i listen to it, I hear something new.
They know what they're doing for sure.
You know what you're talking about.
Great pair, guys...
13:18 I saw them live in Chicago in December and they play almost flawlessly live! I could tell they were almost struggling to play O.D. though, but I couldn’t imagine anyone being able to play that song live with ease.
"Goose" is another really good song, along with "Euphoria". Nice accent you have there, shout outs from South Africa
My guy!!!! 🇿🇦👋💪
I would also recomend ,,aviator,, with one on of the fastes shreding of jameson richardson
Imo goat is just a flex track. OG 40 oZ and light are all just good showcases. The Renaissance album is still my fave
Death note is always my favourite
Champagne!!!
your reaction in the first 10 seconds made me SUBSCRIBE to your channel 🤘🏼. I agree and felt everything you said 🎸👊🏼
Possibly the best reviewer out there. So glad I stumbled across Polyphia which allowed me to stumble across this channel. Great stuff, really good breakdowns on what’s going on in the music.
I really loved your analysis. On point everytime.
I appreciate that!
I was lucky enough to see Polyphia and Chon live when they came to my town, absolutely phenomenal. Goose and Light are a personal favorite from Polyphia and Peace is definitely the song I would recommend for Chon.
Great stuff, love seeing people get exposed to math rock.
'Aaaaaai was not prepared for this' Yes.
I love that smile of a person who sincerely enjoys what he hears and sees. I also have as much enjoyment every time I listen to their songs, especially G.O.A.T, my favorite. Nice reaction, sir!
That's amazing. As someone who works in sound engineering, would love to see/hear the recording sessions for something like this not to mention the mixing part of it all.
Completely agree. Would love to sit in on that.
Not sure who mixed the album, but I know Tim Henson, the guitarist, does a lot of his own mixing and sound engineering
Tim and the others usually record into a DAW with an amp sim or multi fx rig. For this album, most songs were mastered and mixed by two hip hop producers: Judge and Y2K
That was amazing. I was slightly concerned when I heard instrumental but JFC....it was so trippy and awesome.
once again you made me discover a new band that I didnt know I needed in my life
you are really amazing :D
(I subscribed to your channel a few days ago and now I'll be watching all your older videos)
omg you broke this down so perfectly, great job! It's so great hearing other people notice all these nuances too, in both technique and music video. This song is so completely technical and I think all musicians are understanding the difficulty level in what they've done here.
Thank you so much. This was a an incredible experience and I loved every second of this.
First time hearing these guys. What a wicked instrumental.
Tim Henson and Scottie Lepage are incredibly talented and they have so many well done songs. Worth checking out.
Ur in for a treat
Its like if someone took a music box and tossed in a little demon a clown and a fairy. Im amazed.
Love this.
Bro you have an ear for music. Pointed out things I couldn't put into words. Great analysis and good stuff
Appreciate that, Alec. Thanks for the support.
Loved the reaction, mate! This was recommended to me through the algorithm, so I reckon you'll have a surge during the next months.
I'd say check out "James Franco" & "Aviator" for Polyphia's earlier sound, "crush" for a midway point and then "Goose" & "Nasty" for their more recent style.
Phenominal band, blown away whenever I heard something new from them.
Wow. I'm reminded when King Crimson came out with Discipline or The Police with Synchronicity. Something Great and something New. This could be a supergroup. Maybe the music deserves a great singer and that's why there isn't one? Please do more. I'm a big fan already.
Chase, I keep coming back to this to demonstrate why I love reaction videos. The joy of discovery on your face is infectious. I get to hear this song for the first time every time I watch this. Magical.
Go forward man, replaying your reactions all over, good job! KEEP IT UP! I honestly feel both entertained and aducated at the same time :)
That feeling when you heard the song a million times, you get annoyed when the guy pauses the video 🤣 great reaction btw
This sounds like dubstep with an actual guitar, drums and bass. Instead of it being all synthesized computer sounds that dubstep has.
I love that Polyphia have kinda moved away from the prog metal style and found their own place mixing progressive instrumental music with ultra-sharp modern pop, trap and hip hop vibes, truly original and so much better for it
I think the music is actually made on the keyboard and computer ?
@@autohmae At least what Tim writes is usually written using a keyboard to get the structure of the notes, but the final product is live instruments.
@@auracle6184 Having a 2-part song writing process makes perfect sense. Thanks for pointing out how they do it.
@@autohmae Tim made a few videos demonstrating it :D ua-cam.com/video/cZrjfacsTBs/v-deo.html&ab_channel=Polyphia
Really loving how you break it down in addition to reacting to it. Great style of video!
UA-cam recommended me your channel. Glad that you are taking the time to analyze the song in its entirety. Proper reaction video. You earned another sub.
Yes, Polyphia! I knew you'd love this band :) For more Polyphia, try Champagne. For more instrumental prog rock, I recommend Paper Moon, by Plini. For instrumental prog metal, Animals as Leaders are unbeatable and any song from them is amazing, but some of the most popular ones among reactors are CAFO, Tooth & Claw and Ectogenesis.
dude, I am a HUGE fan of Polyphia! i LOVE this album! the whole thing will have your jaw dropped. Speaking of that, your face 1:14 was fucking priceless. you got a subscription out of it! But, PLEASE do more Polyphia first times! this whole album needs to be done! it is a master piece. I have listened to it almosy daily for about a year because I find something new and amazing about it everytime. I loved how you broke it down. again, you definitely got a subscription cause of that face 1:14. Fucking priceless.
idk why but i really enjoy the way you approach these videos, from what i can tell you seem more genuine then most, but idk if that explains it all. Take care love the vids
Your reaction to this directly mirrors my own. They are insane.
Im glad someone else feels like I feel about this song
How can anyone not????
9:30 aw yeah, that rythm is called dembow, very popular in latinamerican music.
I loved his reaction. 👌🏻
incredible analysis and reaction, love how in depth you get in the video! i love polyphia, especially this song! polyphia has so many great tunes, every song of theirs sounds so groovy and fresh! highly recommend anything from their renaissance album.
I think their best song is "OD" so I would reccomend you to listen to that one!
definitely love that song, has a dark almost Spanish tone, can wait for his next polyphia vid, they are one of my favorite bands
Next polyphia song should be either the worst or goose!
I really enjoy this video, you’re one of the only reactors that has a reason for reacting
You are in for a treat with this band they are insane! i love them
These guys are sick, but there are tons of other bands in this same vein that are incredible. Chon is amazing so is Covet. Really some incredible bands out right now that do only instrumental stuff.
It is really awesome to see someone break down a song and talk about the particulars of what they like.
Based on how you spoke about the guitar work here, I think you'd like Abandoned by Unprocessed, it has a lot of similar groove from the guitar work (though, isn't instrumental).
Alternatively, I'd love to see you react to something by Protest The Hero. Sequoia Throne is a great place to start if you're prepared for the chaos!
Thank you for the support. Also nice shout on the reccomendations, will give them a peep.
the "oh" voice at 3:16 when the drummer gets going is magnificent 🥁🗣📢
Good video man. It's an incredible feeling when a sound can make you smile with excitement. Been a while since I've discovered a song to give me the same feeling, but can't wait for it to happen again. Well done. You were entertaining to watch.
Wow-ee. That's like nothing I've ever heard before!
Cool huh?
Chase last time you said you would not take another 3 weeks to react to BM and we're inching ever closer to another 3 weeks :D.
Did you know that Polyphia collabed with BABYMETAL on their latest album Metal Galaxy ? The song is called Brand New Day by BABYMETAL :). I'm not telling you to react to that song in particular since I myself am not too much of a fan of that song, just using this as a way to remind you that we're starving here :D.
I know the Nightwish army is a very strong lobby but you've done 8 Nightwish reactions in the same bracket of time as you've done 3 BM ones :(. Nightwish is great though, I have watched all of your reactions to them.
Haha. BM is tough sometimes as they block a ton of videos. My RoR was taken down but I have more on the way. Promise another one very very soon. I love them.
@@ChaseCarneson Well I understand that very clearly. Amuse is really breathing down reactors' necks. It's a shame really because what is available on UA-cam does not even compare to what you could find on DVD. I have a list of amazing links put up by the community which I'll share below in case you're interested.
One way to avoid blocks is to use the community-developed tool called "ReactorHub" or the simpler method from which the tool originated called "Link & Sync". The idea is straightforward : you provide your viewers with the original video link and you simply countdown "3...2...1...go !" and you let the viewers open the video themselves on another window or screen.
I would really love it if you considered using that method for many reasons. A) If you love them already, I can assure you that the best stuff is NOT on UA-cam so you have seen nothing yet. B) You can say bye-bye to blocks and even demonetized videos. Since you don't use any content on your own video you're free as a bird.
Now that I've talked the talked, here is a link to a small tutorial on how to use ReactorHub if you have the time :
drive.google.com/open?id=1X6hN2BdyKzFmVN9XMEo2M89hsKY0B-bnnHRVVMNY13w
And finally here's a link to a community-made list (constantly up to date) of some of the best BABYMETAL videos sorted by album/song. Those are all HQ in terms of Video, Sound mixing and performance :

@@ChaseCarneson As dem0n has said, it's entirely possible to do BM reactions without blocks and claims and strikes. You just have to switch to using Reactor Hub. Your video will still be on UA-cam, you can still monetise it (you'll get ALL the monies) and you still get the views, you just don't include any footage or audio from the video you're reacting to. If you use the Hub, the video you're reacting to appears beside your reaction in the same browser window. It's great! You should definitely give it a try. If you like it, use it for other bands too and never have to worry about anything getting blocked ever again :-)
@@ChaseCarneson It might be a bit trickier for you since you like to pause and give those amazing insights, but Reactor Hub actually allows you to pause. A little trickier there but way better than getting your video blocked and/or having to edit your video 5 times to make it go through processing :)
First time I watched this whole video, I would be hooked!
10 times straight, I watched it.
Hooked up to JBL'S, W/14" subs, 6" mids and 1" Titanium tweets!
BOOM!!! MESMERISED the rest of the day. (keyboard man, myself- LOVED it! Like a free ticket to symphony orchestra!)🔥❤💪😎👍
Every other time I come to check for a new upload, I check older ones to pick one and listen. For a very odd reason, I skipped this one more than once. I was wrong! Very nice as always listening this composition through your reaction, especially now that it was also my first time listening to it!
I'm only 5 minutes in but holy hell this shit slaps! Reminds me a lot of Animals As Leaders. I bet you would LOVE them and I would LOVE to hear what you think of them. Lippincott is probably my favorite from them.
Got them on the list 💪
I've seen the name around, but I think this is the first time I've actually heard them. Very cool!
Makes me think, next time you visit Japan you should check out Asterism. 3 piece, all instrumental band of Japanese teenagers (at least at the time of recording). Lots of live videos to choose from.
I HAVE TO SEE THIS!!!!
@@ChaseCarneson They're not as interesting as Polyphia, more straight metal/rock. But they are really something. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
Of course, then that leads me to thinking of 3-piece bands, and then I have to mention The Warning. Three sisters from Mexico (though they mostly sing in english) doing some solid rock, and again, teenagers. I think the oldest, Dany (Daniela) is 20 now. "Dust to dust" is a good start, if no other reason that it's the first track, the prologue, off their second album, which is a concept about a stalker and murder. They are very good now, but personally I can't wait to see what they'll be like in 5-10 years.
@@iDEATH If you're into Japanese guitarists, you should check out Ichika Nito on UA-cam. He's good friends with Polyphia and is featured on their latest album. He's only been playing for like 4-5 years and is an absolute virtuoso!
@@WKerrick Oh yeah? Thanks for the tip, I'll write his name down on the ever expanding list and check him out. :)
