    I hurt my back when I was 20. 14 MMA fights and 20 years of concrete and tree work and it's starting to bother me. Honestly what got me through it all. Stretching and ice baths. They suck and are easier with the wim hof method. Never taken pain pills. Not even ibprofin or Tylenol. Also had sponsorship from a chiropractor. He did MRI and x rays. Said the stretching helped keep me from being first person he seen who didn't have there bones fuse together. Gotta keep moving and keep circulation going in those areas. You stop and your in trouble.

    I just want to remove my entire lower back bones. I’m only 18 but I can’t remember a time where I haven’t had lower back pain. It hurts so much and I’m a waiter so long days on my feet make it work and there are days where I can’t even get out of bed because of how much my lower back hurts.

    The risk of adjacent segment disease should've been mentioned. I saw a video of a randomized study done and over the course of a 7 year period close to 1/3 of surgical patients were affected by ASD, eventually leading to fusions of adjacent vertebrae. Artificial Disk Replacements in comparison, had only a 10% chance. That's a 3:1 ratio.

      @@makeupbykhani8178 I was in a dirt bike accident. Im fused from T2 thru T12 and C3 thru C6. The amount of pain I have in a day is horrible. I usually am a 10 out of 10 when i wake up ...till my oral meds start working. Some doctors say I should not continue to be in pain since my last fusion was five years ago. Others are amazed that I have any quality of life. Corenman did the initial fusion, then took everything out 2 years later. 6 months after that he refused everything. I kept following his advice. I had this surgery done in 2011 when I was 24. I tried everything including physical therapy, massages, acupuncture, and the dreadful cortisone injections. It's not as bad as it seems. I was given one year of disability which I think I went back to work on light duty four months later. The thing is is that after you have the surgery you have to realize you are limited! No picking up heavy stuff, no doing crazy activity. I used to snowboard and run constantly and now my workout routine is just walking. My back only hurts right before it's going to rain. I usually just take some OTC pain meds and I'm fine. The worst part of the surgery is just getting used to the feeling of metal in your back. I could feel it for a few months and it bugged me but that's it! All in all if you need the surgery find a very good surgeon like I did and get it done! You just need to realize you have to live a life limited from crazy running and lifting.

    I have to do lower back stretches immediately upon getting out of bed every morning, and it helps for that day only until I sleep again. I'm like a cripple when I first get up, after the stretches I'm fine, although I can tell there's a problem there, it doesn't prevent me from whatever I have to do that day. Bending over stiffens my back again, but it goes away if I'm not doing it too long. I've been doing this now for several years. I don't think there is a way my back will heal itself, and I guess if it keeps getting worse I'll need some sort of intervention; I will try to avoid medications though.

    • @commodityjane

      @@ritab8268 Hi Rita, sorry to hear of your back problems, I know how bad they can be. I have refused previa and other such drugs as I know they build brittle bone and do not help with mortality. They can also cause very bad side effects, so I just take vitamins D3, K2, magnesium, also B complex, folic acid, and also, calcium caps (3x a week only), and only after dinner separately as calcium interferes with magnesium. Mag is the element that helps with bone strengthening. With me it is hips and back, and I can say that if you do stretches, which are very hard at first, they get easier with time, and you might see a lessening of bone loss, and perhaps reversal. Some weight resistance is recommended, but only do as you feel you can. Also the stretches are for herniations to free up the spinal nerves. Good luck to you, don't give up.

I've been told the next step is injections containing a high dosage of pain relief and in the meantime if i do vigorous movements i will have to have a emergency operation.. can you tell me if this is necessary?

    I dunno how old this video is bc they have been doing fusion to vertebrae/spine decades ago. Or was offered to me when I started to have chronic pain after breaking some bones in my spine and nothing else was tried I had brief physio but pain stayed. Other than epidural shots into the spine at only 17 yrs of age, i was offered fusion of entire lower back. Of course someone who was very flexible and gymnastic as well ballet was my life prior to that since I was only 4 I couldn’t imagine not having that flexibility permanently if they fused it. I want offered any other treatment and my back got severely bad narrower nerve spaces level 3 degenerative sick disease to now none to bone and severe sharp shooting never pain down my legs I’m on strongest opioids but no help to nerve type pain. Strange they throw pills at me but they refuse to try anything else there are many procedures but not in Canada and US sadly. Only Germany Australia & multiple European countries offer advanced procedures to actually help or prevent the problems from because wise rather than just numbing it with various pills which eventually do the reverse and send more pain signals so basically not do they just stop working BUT they give more pain. They recently did studies After many long time and big dosage opioid patients reported severe pain while on opioids and increased with dosage increase. Or was mind boggling to me how this can happen but it’s a proven fact now that this indeed does eventually happen and yet they still throw pills they do not solve ANY problems when our spines knees and other degenerative diseases which could of been prevented from getting out of control and just waiting game until bone to bone pinched nerve point in so severe i can no longer do anything and nothing can be done to at least make the pain somewhat livable at least. Contemplated the worse quite a few times bc I can’t live with this and I’m told i I have to bc it’s going to get worse off this possible and there’s NOTHING they can do. FDA does not approve higher standard health care that are actually available in our country. I’d say Canada and US are at third country level when it comes to our health care no joke. I can’t afford $100’s of thousands of dollars buddy to have the surgery or procedures that are available in another country plus it’s kind of late for that but luckily other countries even offer the rejuvenation of completely worn out disks as well inserting a new disk material that they can grow in a lab. Then even do this on dogs when disk and hip problems and we can’t even offer it to ppl handicapped for their entire life when something big pharma refuses to k k et us have approved and do here in North America, because they manner so much money on opioids antidepressant and other masking type meds that people end up dying from eventually but no one sends to care about that am about $$ and politics here.

Low sugar intake, low gluten intake, turmeric, fish oil, lot of stretching, teeter hung up machine, lot of water, low upper body weight.. these are the stuff that kept me out of pain. I am looking into stem cell or prolotherapy procedure hopping to get that disk back to it original shape.. good luck

    I do not understand how can Fusion still be used in the medical field? It to me seems very archaic and outdated. The moment you prevent a section of the spine from moving that means you alter that area and very harrowing repercussions will come after. Orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons should work for a better procedure or technique or better surgical device.

    My mother had an MRI in Jan this year.Its been reported that the effective canal diameter at L3-4 and L5-S1 levels is 20mm and 14.5mm respectively where a mild bulge is seen which it says is causing mild bilateral neural recess narrowing with compression over traversing nerve roots at these levels.It further concludes: changes of lumbar spondylosis and grade II anterolisthesis at L5-S1.Is this situation serious enough for a surgery and will this be TLIFF.I wonder how much it will cost in INDIA

    Does this Dr actually call his patients 'humanoids' at 1:53. This video is very misleading and paints the picture to be a very daunting picture of how weak the back is. Where is the evidence to say the back does not heal? It heals just like the skin with scarring, so it isn't the same tissue as before but it still heals.. why wouldn't it heal?

    • @dale116dot7
      @dale116dot7 10 років тому

      The disc does not heal as it is avascular - there are no blood vessels and no nutrient supply. The disc can 'skin over' and the nucleus material can re-absorb (primarily an immune system response), but a herniated disc is weak forever and the statistics of same-level re-herniation bear that out. That being said, 85% or more of disc patients can manage without surgery - and even a spinal surgeon will not want to operate if the disc is absorbing. However, 'without surgery' means a daily exercise routine, and permanent restrictions on lifting, bending, etc. Slack off, and 'pop'. A sobering thought is that around a quarter of conservatively-treated discs require surgery within 10 or so years. The situation is worse if you have a congenital issue, for example, a sacralised L5. This is a congenital fusion and puts the motion segment above in a similar risk as having an L5/S1 fusion surgically. Mine lasted 42 years but now L4/L5 is gone. It has been 'bad' for about 15 years but I did the exercises and restrictions but still, my time is up for that disc. It definitely does not 'heal' like other parts of your body and I have a CT and MRI record of that. The other thing to consider is that nerve compression can cause axon death in your nerves, and they definitely won't heal either. Fortunately we are built with a lot of reserve signalling but avoiding permanent nerve damage is one other reason surgery is indicated. Yes, surgery *may* damage the nerves, but the surgeon and patient should weigh the risk of permanent nerve loss vs. risk of surgery to come up with the best possible treatment plan.

    • @steveptk
      @steveptk 10 років тому

      dale116dot7 Well not all of the disc is considered to be avascular, so not entirely true. If a herniated disc is weak forever and some new studies (McCullough BJ, 2012) suggest 56% of people WITHOUT back pain have a herniation and 32% a protrusion, then that is a lot of people walking around with "weak backs". There are no studies identifying who should be operated on looking at an 'absorption rate' otherwise they would get it correct every time. Again, there is no truth about a daily exercise plan being required to maintain a healthy back. In fact there is no relationship between strength and disc herniations to date. This is a myth. Where are these stats from? a 1/4 of non operated discs require surgery in 10 years? Which longitudinal study shows this? I agree with your last sentence but that is about it. MRI scans show changes in the back many of which are normal (www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1209250). They can't predict how much pain you will have and certainly don't tell you if it is weak. There is no correlation between weakness and pain. Again many people have anomalies such as sacralisation which give them no pain. It's your belief system that keeps the problem going not the tissue.

    • @dale116dot7
      @dale116dot7 10 років тому

      Regarding your last point, sacralisation with no pain - yes, I was pain-free from that but when the disc above herniates into two nerve roots then I have pain and a problem - and the likelihood appears to be higher with LSTV than not (Konin, Walz and their references 5, 8, and 15). Regarding strength vs. herniations - after my first herniation (18 years ago), a specific exercise program seemed to be able to keep the symptoms 'at bay' but the instant I did anything wrong - skipping a few days of stretches, moving incorrectly, lifting something too heavy that I used to be able to lift pre-herniation - I had a flare-up of L5/S1 leg pain. Sample size 1, but that has been *my* experience but also the experience of quite a number of my friends with back issues. With regards to an MRI predicting pain, I totally agree. Sometimes you have a totally smashed-in nerve that is completely asymptomatic and the next one is a tiny herniation not even touching the nerve root and the leg is 'on fire'. I've had both at different times. And repeated same-level herniation, I've had at least three conservatively-treated ones at the same level, so at least in my case, a 'healed' disc appears to be 'weaker' than a normal one. Multiple studies show around a 20% same-level re-herniation rate.

    • @steveptk
      @steveptk 10 років тому

      dale116dot7 When you say weaker, then I think you reword to sensitive, as that would be more appropriate. Weaker would imply that you keep doing more damage as it gives out/ is damaged etc. If the MRI is not that helpful with understanding pain then perhaps whether the disc is bulged, protruding or even sequestrated is not that relevant, to the point that you have even experienced this yourself. This has more to do with your nervous system that the actual structural changes that you are very fixed on. I think the statement should be, once a disc is injured it can feel injured again easily, even if it isn't, and that goes for any part of the body. Explain Pain Lorimer Moseley

    • @dale116dot7
      @dale116dot7 10 років тому

      To me it seems like both - it seems to be more sensitive in that it is relatively easy to provoke pain in the disc (that makes sense if the scar tissue is well-innervated) and I expect my 'small flare-ups' is me misinterpreting the data, thanks for giving a more plausible explanation of pain that only lasts a few days or weeks - that makes a lot of sense. But it also seems 'weaker' in that only that disc 'gives out' quite a bit easier than all of the others. My 2004 CT showed a small contained herniation with some fairly minor (still painful) traversing L5 compression; this subsided conservatively but no images were taken after (so I don't know if the nerves just adjusted to their new neighbour or what) until another bad flare-up that hasn't gone away for about 8 months. My 2014 MRI showed a 10mm by 12mm herniation/extrusion without sequestration with a much more pronounced L5 compression (the nerve root is pretty flattened) and also 'barely contacting' L4.

Steroids did help but doctors refuse to give them to me again which makes me wonder that they want me to get surgery . I write out of pure curiosity because I have literally tried every single thing I could find to do for my lumbar spine and my cervical spine.I fell out the back of a service truck 30 years ago this year I landed on my tailbone from a height of about 9 feet ..I have multiple herniations with nerve entrapment .I have been suffering every single day since my fall.I have been disabled and in chronic pain every day.I'm not sure if you could do anything for me at this point.My employer wouldn't approve corrective surgery and my condition has only gotten worse.I never returned to work and I am very limited and I worry about what's to come.I was 32 when I fell and I am 62 this year.I think it must be too late now for any intervention .My nerve damage is at the point where I have to deal with every conceivable symptom a person could have.I am way past my wits end.What can I do at this point? My life has been totally ruined and missed out on everything a man could dream of,like marriage,children,my own business,and so on.I still get mad from time to time knowing that my employer didn't care enough about my injury to fix the problems I deal with.
