Thanks for sharing, I have a 2021 F250 crew cab 4x4 Godzilla with 3.55 gears in back, pulling 8000 lbs camper to the panhandle in Florida recently from Ohio and back I averaged 10.5 mpg, (I’m not picky where I fill up) plenty of power, truck didn’t down shift under 6th gear but a couple of times the whole trip, I was able to accelerate up hills and keep up with traffic no problem, had to back off the accelerator most of the time, lol

Marty, how has the truck been holding up? I too live in Ohio and I'm interested in getting a 2022 F350 with he Godzilla and 4.30 gears.
A few weeks back I was able to reach 17-18 mpg on the turnpike @ 65 mph cruise control using 93 octane. I've used 91 or 93 nearly the entire 14k miles I've put on my 2021 7.3L. The driver's manual says that 87 is okay but 91+ is recommended, especially for towing. This is where i see the biggest difference in performance, it is noticeable. Sunoco has started to offer 94 at some locations but the difference between 93 and 94 is minimal.
What axle ratio ?

A couple stations in our area just started offering Non ethanol high test 'Rec' fuel. I use it in my boat and all of my small engines. It's running about sixty cents a gal higher that like 87 but I love that fact that it's non ethanol. Especially in the boat since ethanol is what attracts moisture when it sets for any length of time I am told
Yep we have rec fuel. I use it in everything. It is more expensive. But for stuff I don't run as much I put it in everything. My Harley I run premium in. Occasionally I put some on the auto. I may try a full tank sometime.
Ethanol is an alcohol and it will corrode aluminum. If you leave Ethanol gas sit in anything with a carburetor for a while you will see what I mean. Watch the Project Farm video on it.
I just did a run from StL MO to Jacksonville NC in my 7.3 Tremor. Got an avg of 15mpg on the way out. Got a tick over 11mpg towing a 6x12 covered uhaul. Avg about 70mph.
A "tick" as in the engine is broken?
I have a 2022 F450 Cab Chassis with flatbed with 7.3 and 4.88 gears. Pulls everything I need, love it

Just pulled my 11,000 pound fifth wheel with my 2020 F-250 7.3 Tremor with 4.30 rear gears in a 25mph cross wind running 75 mph mph and I got a whopping 5 mpg going East to Nebraska from the Denver area. Usually gets about 8 without the wind. It averages 13.6 -14 mpg with mixed highway and city driving.
Crazy the force of the wind. I haul a truck camper. Usually 8-11ish range 55-75mph.

I started adding fuel treatment Lucas upper cylinder lubricant. It added 3 gpm to my truck without using higher octane. 1 bottle treats up 25 gallons. I add about very other time. It’s not expensive

I completely agree with you about using Shell gasoline. I have a 04 Scion xb that I bought new that is a daily driver with 220k on it. Check engine light was off and on for years. When we moved to our new house the closest gas station was a Shell. The check engine light hasn't been back on in over six years. IDK but it's true.
We use others. But we try to just use shell. It's probably 90 percent of our fuel. Not any issues
The cost of fuel over there is so cheap, that would have cost nearly double the price to fill up over here!!!! Amazing value Godzilla!!!

Shell is great gas. In my SUV it calls for 87 but when I use 93 I can tell the difference not a big mpg gain maybe 1 or 2 mpg but it idle smoother has better pick up and I take the same route to work every day the same hills and everything and I can tell when my car would normally trigger a downshift that I can press deeper into the gas pedal without triggering a downshift when I use 93

@@ep9691 not really most gas stations at least in my area are within $0.05 maybe $0.20 if we’re talking a completely different side of town, so if we are filling up our entire tank maybe at the most that entire tank cost two or three dollars more. I really don’t look at that as too heavy of a cost to make the entire tank of gas better and have your car perform better.

It’s probably due to the ethanol content in 87 and in 89. I was losing 10% more from the cold temperatures. Topped off with 93 it’s going back up. I’ve found it’s has little or no ethanol. I have a 3.5 DI Nissan. The compression is 11.0 to 1. It’ll burn fine.

Nice gas comparison. The F-350 motor is pretty big. I have a 2019 F-150 (3.5L V-6). I run the3 mid-grade (89 octane) and always buy Shell. On a trip to and from my son's house in Texas and back home in SC, we averaged 22 mpg, and the ECO Boost gave me 375 horses, so plenty of power for when I needed it.

That’s pretty good mileage, my 2011 f150 3.5 eco boost only gets about 14.5-15mpg city and backroads combined driving

Your Godzilla looks great!! It seems I've seen folks on the forums indicate that the "eco" mode can squeeze a 1mpg extra. But, there are also so many variables.
I'll be really curious how our empty mileage works out for empty trips. It is about 38 miles to the airport, and the elevation drops a little over 2000 feet. Then repeat, but uphill, to get home. That route is pretty much all 60mph. Of course, if I go anywhere else, there would be some serious climbing and descending involved. I'd guess that eco mode would be good for me just going between home and the airport, but would probably put it in normal mode, or whatever it is called, for cruising the mountains empty. Then tow mode, of course, for hauling the trailer when that arrives.

I agree I think up and down the mountains regular mode. Flats slight incline highway speeds eco. Might be a gallon at best. This truck purrs nice. We really love it. Have a great day!

I was wondering if you would try a additive that I use called turbo max and I seem to have pretty good luck with it I pick up an extra 2 to 3 miles a gallon in my wife’s car. I’ve also used in my F350 6.7
I put on a Flowmaster and a hard bed cover and gained a coupls mog.

Put the octane rated gas the manufacturer says for your engine!!! Octane rating has nothing to do with the amount of energy in gasoline. However, if you put in lower octane gasoline than what Ford recommends, the engine will back off on the timing and you will get poor mileage and it harms the engine!!!

my buddy had a flex fuel f150 and we measured the ethanol level using a scan tool and found shell was one of the worst companies that sell gas at least here in florida

When I remember to put trans in econ mode, my mpg goes up. Haven’t tried 91+ yet. After one fillup 15 miles away it was 18.5 til I started up the hill to the house.
Have you set up “My View” for the info center?
When will people understand that this doesn't do a whole lot to your car unless it requires a higher octane to run. If it runs on 87 it will be fine regardless.
Higher octane just means that the engine that is designed to use it, is designed to have the fuel ignite at a certain compression ratios. This compression ratio is determined by how the engine is designed(you can't change it with fuel type). All the octane determines is how hot the fuel needs to get, before it will ignite.
So running 93 in a 87 octane does nothing, even with modern vehicles that have computerized systems that can have some aspects of them be variable, you won't gain much of anything because if you gain 5% more power with some variable system, you are also losing power because higher octane fuel has less energy in it than lower octane fuel.
So you gain nothing, all higher octane is meant for is so that vehicles that are designed to make use of it can do is use a few little tricks that allow more granular control of how the engine runs and to make it more reliable in some aspects. Otherwise it doesn't do anything. But if you are paying 30% more for your gas, if you can use 87, do it. All newer vehicles also have sensors so if they "require" 93 but only lower octane fuels are available, the computer just sets the engine to run at a lower level of performance.
There isn't a change in the quality of gas unless between different companies due to said company not following proper procedure and selling contaminated gasoline.

@@yungnachty4474 We like the Xlt, or Lariat. We have xlt f150, the f350 is the Lariat I think king ranch or platinum is to much for what you get. They are all getting crazy. Kinda is what it is. No issues 30k, hauling camper, firewood, manure trailer every day driving.

Not real certain. I mainly have used it when on highway and flat type stuff.
It seems to take off slower for me than if it was in normal mode. I'll use it for highway driving but around town I'd rather just be in normal.

I had to laugh, I used to haul gasoline and diesel in a tanker, Just because the gas station is branded Shell does not mean they are selling Shell Gasoline. I have loaded Phillips and Conoco gas from the same pipe. Don't get fooled thinking branded fuel is any better than the no name gas. It's all the same.

For what it’s worth, I hauled fuel too and also worked at a truck rack where they load trucks, a brand specific additive is added/injected at the truck rack when loading “branded” fuel.

Hey, how have the 7.3 and 10 speed trans been holding up. I'm interested in a new F350 but have heard a few negative things about that powertrain.
I'm at 31,000 miles no issues. Hauled truck camper up & down the mountains last fall it did great
Wish this thing came from the factory with another 100 ft lbs for the mountains.
I will be curious. I'm using it in September. Hauling a truck camper in the mountains. Well see how it does.

I haven’t driven one but in my opinion it seems like the 3/4 and 1 ton equivalent of the 150 with the 5.0. And my 5.0 struggles where I live.

We are gearing up for another trip. We are over 34000. Love it. I think gas is a touch better. 13-15ish normal empty driving. 3.73 gears
I have the 4.30. Empty driving with a leer cap I’m at 11-12 ish not towing using 87 octane. No cap and it’s 9-10.

Gradually. At 30k is when I noticed a bigger difference.
My first 2 tanks were less than 12 mpg. I noticed a bump at 1k, 2k, and 5k. 7.3l, 4.30 gears F250 Tremor. Average 14.5 on 87 octane now

BTW if in your future endeavors you come across a class A motor home owner having misfires occurring with their ”Godzilla", recommend they look closely at the plug wires.
My problem involved the plug boot melting under the metal heat shield, that's suppose to protect the wire from heat. 🤣. Go figure.

@@adventurerhoades So sounds like Michigan doesn’t charge extra between 250/350. Some states charge extra for 350s because they consider it a commercial grade truck. That’s why they buy 250s like in Arizona you get hit harder for stepping up to a 350s

Ethanol free is best for any gas engine but it's so expensive. In my area, $4.18 a gallon

Great recommendation, if it is doable. Though, I'd be curious if the 7.3l can use the ethanol fuel. Only reason I wonder is the Ford 6.2l specifically has flex fuel annotated on the vehicle. I'm not sure they do that for the 7.3l.

There is no difference in power output per volume in 87 octane versus 93 octane gasoline. These are sales gimmicks used by fuel companies to sell more expensive fuel. It won't ever cause any physical damage to put premium fuel in an engine that doesn't require it, but quite the opposite the other way around. The octane rating of gasoline does indeed have a purpose. The higher the octane level the less likelihood of pre-detonation in high compression engines. As compression increases as does the internal temperature of the combustion chamber. This is why diesel engines do not have spark ignition systems, their compression is so high that the heat generated alone is enough to cause the fuel/air mixture to ignite. Lots of high-end, high compression, high performance gasoline engines require premium gas as to not allow the compression heat to ignite the mixture before the spark plug does. Low octane in a high compression environment equals knocking and pinging and possible catastrophic failure. This is why high octane engines say premium gas REQUIRED inside the fuel door rather than just optional. The 7.3 godzilla is not a particularly high compression engine and was engineered to run off standard 87 octane so essentially premium gas won't offer any distinct measurable difference other than costing you more at the pump. It helps to understand the science behind things other than "it costs more so it should be better, right?"

I used to live in Traverse City. I live up north from there now in Petoskey. My 03' F150 would be very similar to that and I have a 5.4 Triton 2 valve sitting at 262,000 miles. I'm sure the Godzilla will get there as well.

Once I heard of the Godzilla project a couple of years ago, I thought right away that Ford may have just helped save a massive V-8 following (that honestly do not need a diesel). It's all about variety in my opinion and something for any use which Ford has clearly led the way in even if they weren't Thee most powerful or Fastest. *If a guy buys a Godzilla @ 40 years old and treats is well, it will be passed down generation to generation.
As the world is going more toward Electric Vehicles, Ford realizes that the V-8 bunch is still very much alive. So, I'm sorry to be the "hater" here but I'll explain why I think this newer 7.3 gas engine from Ford is a joke and why I'm skeptical about your gas comparison to what the instrument cluster said.
1. When you are doing a fuel comparison, you're going to have to make sure you're doing it on the same level ground at the fill station in the beginning and also make sure that wherever you refill at is ALSO level.
This is important because if one is slightly at an angle, that will affect the amount of gas you'll be able to get in your truck by 1 or 2 gallons.
Also, you have to spend about 4 to 5 minutes AFTER the fuel nozzle handle "clicks" to get the gas to be completely full up to the point that it is at the fill spout and you can see it level off at the top.
Then when you're filling up the 2nd time, you need to fill it up COMPLETELY AGAIN the exact same way.
Too often, people will just fill it to when the fuel handle "clicks" and releases the handle and doesn't try to fill any more fuel in.
The problem with doing this is that each fuel station may have a different handle sensitivity and may allow and extra 1/4 to 1/2 gallon of fuel to be added prior to shutting off.
Also, if you're not filling it up completely to the top BOTH TIMES, then you are likely not going to have the exact same fill amounts for each fill up which will result in inaccurate calculations.
For example: if you were to fill up and had it completely topped off to the point that the fuel level sits level at the top of the fuel neck the first time but the second time you just filled it to when the clicker on the handle turned the handle off and then tried to fill it one more time, you might get it to fill to the top but if you don't wait a few seconds for the fuel to "settle" back down the fuel neck, you wouldn't be able to get more fuel in the tank.
As a result, you would have at least 1 to 2 gallons less fuel on the second fill up or the refill and this would make your fuel mileage "seem" better since you wouldn't have that added 1 or 2 gallons figured into your calculations.
And to be honest, the reality is, you might even be able to "squeeze" almost 3 extra gallons into the tank which can make a fuel mileage rating of say 400 miles with 28 gallons go from 14.29 MPG to 12.90 MPG if you were able to put a total of 3 gallons in.
So, that's a difference of 1.39 MPG or almost 1 1/2 which is a huge difference.
Even if you were only able to get 2 extra gallons in at the refill, the difference is about 0.96 MPG or 1 MPG.
The point is, you HAVE to be spending the extra time to get the fuel to come to the top completely and letting it settle to the point that it doesn't go back down the fuel filler neck and it just sits at the top.
The thing is, virtually NOBODY is willing to stand at the pump and keep trying to put in that extra 1, 2, or 3 gallons because it's not something that you can just do in a few clicks of the handle that only takes 10 to 15 seconds and you're done. It can take 4 or 5 minutes to get this procedure done and hardly anyone wants to wait that long.
But, if you want 100% accuracy, that is the way to do it.
So, you have to be honest with yourself and do it 100% the same way both times. You can't do this if you're relying on the handle to "click" at both fuel stations THE EXACT SAME WAY because they're typically not going to UNLESS you're fueling up at the exact same station as when you started.
2. The instrument cluster is typically off by quite a bit. I see yours was only a difference of about 0.2 or 0.3 but usually, it's more than that. And again, if you see my recommended procedure listed above, you would see the difference.
In my diesel, it is off by at least 2 MPG and usually it's between 2.3 and 2.5 MPG difference. So, when it says I'm getting 14.5 on the dash, I'm really only getting 12 MPG or maybe 12.2 at best.
THAT'S A MAJOR DIFFERENCE.
0.5 MPG difference or less is probably acceptable AS LONG AS you're doing your fill ups and refills exactly the same way.
But again, I'm suspect of this.
Anything over such as 1 MPG or more of a difference is just ridiculous but it is what it is. It's not like Ford is going to recalibrate all of their dash MPG calculators to be more accurate. They don't care. And plus, if it was more accurate, it would be even worse which would hurt sales.
So........
3. You folks were driving 60 MPH or less and it looked like 58 MPH for many times in the trip with the exception of when you were back in town doing 40 mph.
The problem with this is, NOBODY DRIVES THIS SLOW ANYMORE.
So.....it's not a "real world" figure that anyone can use because it's just not relevant.
Most people have highways that have a minimum of a 65 mph speed limit. Sure, there are some areas where it's still 55 or 60 but the majority are at least 65 and above.
But, interstates are usually at least 70 or above and 75 to 80 mph are more common.
And the reality is, even if it's not 70 mph or higher, "most" people are going to drive 75 mph or more when cruising down the interstate which is when people give a crap about highway MPGs.
So, going 10 to 15 mph slower is of course going to improve fuel mileage. But this isn't "normal driving behavior".
4. I can get better fuel mileage in my older 2002 F-250 with the supposed "gas pig/hog" of an engine which is the 6.8 V-10.
Now sure, it doesn't have the power that this newer 7.3 does but it can tow quite a bit. I've towed as much as 21,000 total going between 72 and 75 mph and gotten 7.5 to 8.0 MPG. When I was driving 55 to 60 mph, I was getting 9 MPG and better and sometimes I would see 10 MPG or better depending on terrain.
I monitor this with the Torque Pro app. (If you don't know what this is, you should get it and use it as it's cheap at around $5 unless you know how to get things free online and just buy a cheap $10 adapter to plug into your OBDII port underneath your dash to read codes and monitor all kinds of sensors)
Anyway, I have watched many videos by different owners of this engine and they aren't getting what I'm getting towing less that what I am with a pickup that is 20 years old.
So, this is a joke from Ford in my opinion.
I have a 2007 F-250 with the newer 3-valve V-10 that I have to rebuild. I have heard that these don't get great fuel mileage as well but I'll see when I get it rebuilt.
Although the power is better, it's not that much better than the more recent 3-valve version of the 6.8 V-10. And with the fuel mileage being so crappy with this new 7.3 gas engine, I wouldn't even consider it.
I can hook up a tuner to the truck and have pretty much the same power as this new engine with better fuel mileage. What would there be to gain by going with this newer pickup other than amenities?
Incredible detail. Very true on exact measurements on the same station level and making sure totally full. We had a 2000 f250 with v10 great truck. This 7.3 is better gas better power. Loved both though. Thank you
You can bypass all this by actually just seeing how many gallons you put in the truck at the gas meter and driving a distance. Then you subtract the next pump and see how many gallons you actually used for that distance
@@ep9691 but there is a problem with what you mentioned. The problem is, people won't fill up their vehicle before their trip and after their trip EXACTLY TO THE SAME LEVEL.
If someone puts gas in at one station before the trip and then travels 200 to 300 miles and then fills up at a different station (which is likely), if they just allowed both stations to stop the fill procedure wherever the handle lever stopped and *clicked" to stop the filling of the fuel, NEITHER STATIONS will have the )ever stop at exactly the same time. So, there can be a difference of 1 to 2 gallons or more.
The only way to get an accurate reading is to make sure that you're on level ground AT BOTH STATIONS and simply fill each fill completely full and wait for it to level off until it is filled to the point that neither of the fills runs over but the fuel level is sitting at the lip of the fill spout where you put the fuel cap on.
That way, both full ups are EXACTLY the same so you can get the same readings.
If you don't do it this way, your fuel mileage calculations will be inaccurate.
If you fill up to the very top before you leave and the lever clicks but you were able to fill an extra 1 or 2 gallons more than when the lever clicked at the next fill, that would be 2 more gallons LESS that you would be calculating. As a result, your fuel mileage will be calculated better than it actually is because when you fill up the second time, you will have 1 or 2 less gallons to account for.
AND THIS MEANS the calculations will provide better MPG results due to having 1 or 2 less gallons accounted for.
And this is the problem that people run into alm of the time. They "think" they are filling their tanks the same way both times when I reality, they are not and as a result, their calculations are inaccurate.
The 7.3 doesn’t need premium. That’s like putting it in a quad haha Or you just messing around?
