The Dark Knight - The Influence Of Heat | Video Essay

- Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight set a benchmark for mainstream filmmaking and the superhero genre, but it was also inspired in different ways by other films. Christopher Nolan tends to screen a film to the cast before production and in the case of The Dark Knight, it was Michael Mann's Heat. In this film analysis, I discuss how The Dark Knight was influenced by Heat through visual cues and character journeys. My Christopher Nolan Marathon on the road to TENET continues with video essays every week on all of the director's filmography.

Dude, no one says Public Enemies is Mann’s best film. Maybe a small percentage say LOTM and an even smaller say Collateral, but it’s quite clearly HEAT.
I could argue Manhunter, Thief, The Insider, or Heat on a given day, depending on my mood. Even Miami Vice is aging incredibly well and gets better every time I watch it. But Public Enemies, while not terrible, isn't in the conversation.
Great job man. I think you nailed Heats influence on The Dark Knight. Nolan is a huge Michael Mann Fan. The dark knight also has homages to collateral in it. Like the nightclub scene with Sal Maroni. And the first layer down in Inception, you can see Heats influence again. Im sure we will see it once again in Tenet. For me, Heat is my favourite Michael Mann film, followed by The last of the Mochicans.
Thanks man and I didn’t even know that about collateral and the club scene. Think I need to rewatch it soon. And same heat is my favourite of Mann’s. I think it’s really interesting to see how directors get their influence for a project. Nolan said Tenet isn’t really inspired by anything but I’m sure there will be elements of other films there. Regardless, really looking forward to it!

Thanks for the shout out ;) great video , I've noticed that since the Dark Knight was made- the scale of Nolan's films are now a lot larger , it might be because it was the first film where he started to use IMAX camera's but part of me likes to think that Heat ( and Mann) has left a lasting influence on his film making, looking forward to the Inception video, all the best Paul
I agree with that. I've always thought that Nolan is a weird hybrid of Kubrick and Mann in different aspects. The Dark Knight was really that film which propelled him to applying his style in larger scale film making. And no problem Paul, it was great of you to suggest it. A brilliant idea that hasn't been touched on much, so thanks!
Love both movies, really amazing how one influenced the other.
Bravo!!!!! Spot on retrospect review. Great work.
as always great review
Glad you enjoyed! Really appreciate it, thank youu 🙂
Wow! I hda neve seen the connection before, but now it's so obvious!!! Great video, Thanx!!!
Oh, I'd love to see something about Mann's film 'The Keep' - he's never talks about it about due to problems with the studio and its quietly been forgotten. Its a odd film thats for sure but it has a great cast and a stella soundtrack thanks to Tangerine Dream and its Mann at his most art-house and his only venture into the world of fantasy Horror. Paul
Agreed, and I am aiming to go through many directors after Nolan. I think Villeneuve, Fincher and Kubrick will be up next, but Mann is on the list for sure as he's a personal fave. Gosh there's so many I want to do haha.
@@CortexVideos Fincher! yes!
Great job scooter👍👏💙✌
Great score by Tangerine Dream, too!
Heat was a remake of a made for TV movie Michael Mann wrote and directed, "L.A Takedown."
Mann didn't like how 'Takedown' turned out with the limitations of a Network movie of the week.
Mann also initially pitched what became Heat as a tv series. I may be misremembering, but I think that even a pilot episode was both shot and aired.
Wow!!
wow great video!
Brilliant Content Both Michael Mann & Christopher Nolan are Brilliant Filmmakers 🎬🎥🤘🏻🎞
Also Joker 2019 and Taxi Driver and King of Comedy .
That’s a great example too.
Logan - No Country for Old Men and Unforgiven
I haven't even watched yet, but wanted to tell u how impressed my husband was with your Inception tribute. Robert is a musician and has a degree in music technology and some A/V stuff. He kept asking "He made this?". Sorry. Just thought it was great. Looking forward to this one too💙💙✌
Honestly I've been so blown away by the response to it and can't thank you enough for the kind words Kerri. Really glad he liked it! I may do some more every now and again for other films and shows. Who know maybe a few westworld ones before season 4 😃
@@CortexVideos oh yeah!! Everything u do is awesome❤❤✌
That’s so nice of you to say Kerri! Means so much 😊
@@CortexVideos well, it's true. So glad Justin brought you around!! I want to find a kind of crash course on storytelling and the elements. I'm not very good at a Macro view. Working on it. Y'all have made me super interested. I've always loved reading and all that, just never taken any courses on writing. Want to make a new video that correlates with stories in stream I've been doing. Probably something Targaryen. I've always been more into the north. I'm blown away by all the information I've missed out on all these years. Loving it!!! so wheels turning😍✌
💜😊
Lots of "influence" from Scorsese's Cape Fear as as well. Check it out.
these similarities are really flagrant but I didn't notest it at all even having watched both films, so thanks for that and great analysis :)
Glad you enjoyed it! It's great to see how a film is crafted through inspiration and originality mixed together. I love how Nolan takes the approach of showing a film or two to the cast before filming. Gets them into the mindset of the tone etc.
@@CortexVideos absolutely, man. I guess you could talk about 2001 in the Interstellar video (I know that's not as surprising as Heat and TDK but you never know haha)
Intial soundtrack of joker crashes the party was highly awsome( kind of a remix though). Please make a full audio track of it.
Fun fact William fincter was in both movies
He really was!
Nolan did this on purpose to acknowledge the influence of Heat. Batman Begins was influenced by Blade Runner, hence why he cast Rutger Hauer. The Dark Knight Rises was influenced by Full Metal Jacket, hence why he cast Matthew Modine.
What about the peterbilt truck that appears in the beginning of heat and in the dark knight scene with a similar peterbilt that flips over...just a detail but interesting
Has Heat 2 come out???
I heard this was possibly happening.
I love your content, but I have a confession to make - I always play it at 1.25x speed :D
🤣😅
I love TDK but its kinda lame how much it took from Heat.
Your stretching it bro. One is a stupid comic book cgi fantasy the other is a top shelf action/drama true criminal masterpiece showcasing the 2 most important actors of our time in their prime. You analysis is probably right but i have a hatred for Hollywood's love of comic book and cgi sci fi post modernistic bs films. Big screen Film making is a lost art and a ban on cgi in Hollywood can save it
By the way you forgot to mention that this is one between many reasons why Tim Burton's Batman are a masterpiece and Nolan is an absolute copy and paste dude .
i love burton’s batman.. returns keeps growing on me
