Yes, I thought this was going to be about "what happened to it" meaning, I have always had to be pleasantly surprised that somebody even knows and loves this film, where it should be the opposite.

@ Kung Few. The guy was fierce but also weak as a baby....involved in a toxic relationship...interesting character and perfectly embodied by Val Kilmer.
Unfortunately this film didn’t get the attention it deserved when it was released. So it’s really nice to now see it recognized as the masterful classic that it always has been. It’s just an epic work of art.
It was one in a crowded genre, but the only one that will still get watched and talked about today and into the future.
It is true. 'Heat' was put down as an 'okay movie'...and Michael Mann was that guy from 'Miami Vice'.

It blew up after the Hollywood shootout. Then later on was recognized for it's ability to age like fine wine. I think the younger crowd remembered this film fondly as opposed to any of the other films in the same genre.
Moby's "God Moving Over The Face of the Waters" is truly a gem in this movie. It encapsulates the ending so well.

In the original script Al Pacino's character does coke to stay awake however it was mostly edited out. That explains his frequent outbursts.

You know the alternative score option was repurposed and used at the end of the film Michael Collins? Moby track was the right option but someone has done an edit on here with the alternative.
There is something to be said about the quality of a film when, structurally speaking, the climax of the movie is not an action sequence but the mere conversation between the two main characters in a dinner.
That isn't what climax means.
I would say the climax is the killings of the main characters - probably Wayne Gro.
The high point of the movie was them having coffee. But "climax" means the culmination of the plot points. The climax was the chase scene that ended with ine of them dead.

When Pacino's character kills Deniro's character there is this feeling of absolute finality, but yet it feels empty. The moment when Pacino grasps Deniro's hand as he lay dying... man the climax changes. Just utterly fantastic.
_Heat_ has the BEST use of a stellar cast!
and without relying on them being a 'stellar' cast, or even fully known cast. Voight was done, we'd seen lil Star Wars in one great film but we didn't know her, Judd is just.... perfect but she's Judd. Trejo ...and love him in Runaway Train (starring Voight) is great, but nobody knew him. Sizemore wasn't known for all intents. Kilmer...this was his last shot. We'd last seen him in Willow or something. Pacino was mid woo-hah days and finding his place. Edy's character (what is her name....exactly. we still don't know) was perfect. Fiji and Scot-Irish lonely are you lonely blah blah ... perfect. Everyone is attached to something, and most are attached while driving a 1997 Camaro.

I first saw val in top gun then heat as I had like 4 TV channels in 90s in UK growing up 2 poor for sky lol so watched random or blockbusters now can watch anything thank god I think willow filmed in New Zealand and North Wales town called Llanberis and snowdon etc I never watched it but I no it was filmed there its next 2 the mountains but very beautifull the actors must have loved it there peacfull and beautiful lake middle of nowhere

What's truly criminal is that this film wasn't even considered for a Best Picture award. Michael Mann has produced some amazing work, but this film was probably his finest hour.

Every sub-plot in this movie works, it really keeps you engaged the entire length. When Dennis Haysbert starts to tear up in the "what the hell you proud of me for" scene it hits the feels hard. I'd seriously watch a movie just based on the relationship of him and his chick. I tear up whenever i think about that scene
People underestimate the importance of the glass shattering scene in the first heist.

Remember, it was 1995. In a sea of action movies with guns with infinite ammo and sparks instead of bullet holes all of the sudden you see that kind of detail and realize “oh yes, this is for real”.
@@netaro1890 the pressure wave from a detonating explosive shaped charges would shatter almost every window within a 25 meter radius, and that was perfectly depicted.
@@MaxwellAerialPhotography Probably not if it was a shaped charge. Shaped charges direct their energy into the target (hence the name). However if it was a big blob of plastic explosive or a stick of TNT it would have created a large enough concussion to break a bunch of windows. (I used to make plastic explosives).
Love this movie! My dad says his favorite part is the shootout, which is the most realistic and the most well done action sequence in film history.

@@Asynthetic I saw in a behind the scenes they were going to dub in the gunfire but the acoustics (sound and report) in the city with the buildings was the way to go.
The video game Kane and Lynch was heavily inspired by those shoot outs.
@@Loophole23742 The game sucked cause of their control scheme. I couldn't get passed the terrible control set up. But the story was very good and yes reminiscing of the great movie HEAT.
" A Los Angeles crime saga." The tag line from the one sheet is epic by itself.
The best thing about that is they actually spell out “Los Angeles.” I’m so sick of our city being called “LA.” It sounds so diminutive and dismissive.

@Stefano Pavone not in the uk mate, it had a book with it and special box which was pretty smart as this was still unheard of in 1996 I think. The video came out. The movie got middling reviews here in the uk at best and was not particularly well received, I was only 14 when. I saw it at the pics, thought it was great

I took my dad in 1995 to see HEAT at the AMC theaters.
The shootout scene is one of the best in cinema even by today's standards.

As a US Marine, I can vouche for the validity of using that firefight as an attention getter and instruction piece on how to engage with enemy forces by using coordinated squad and fireteam tactics.

That meeting at the restaurant between Al Pacino and Robert De Niro gave me chills. One of the best acting scenes in cinema.
I've done that scene in acting class playing DeNiro. Fun to do, hard to get just right.
The tension that starts with the electronic stabs from the soundtrack as they enter the bank is almost peerless. Taylor Sheridan states that his whole inspiration for writing 'Sicario', especially of course the border crossing sequence, was completely inspired by the heist from 'Heat'.
An underrated masterpiece. Unparalleled.

I don't know if I'd call it underrated now but it wasn't appreciated when it came out. I didn't think much of it myself tbh. I watched it about ten years ago and I was amazed at its brilliance. I watch it a few times a year now. I think it was probably ahead of its time.
One of the few perfect films ever made. A masterpiece, like The Godfather 1 and 2, Empire Strikes Back, LA Confidential, and Chinatown.
Goodfellas is only perfect film.

LA Confidential seems like it never gets the love it deserves. That was a great film! Miller's crossing is another beautiful crime/gangster film as it is highly stylized and the language is so unique. (I know you were just mentioning some OTHER good movies as well so there is no need to denigrate someone based on one's OWN misunderstanding).
I don't give Lucas any credit for a great film. You gotta remember his wife and editors trimmed down the piece of crap he showed to Spielberg and saved star wars. He had a idea but was a bad director that got lucky he had a wife who didn't want to see him fail.

Heat ruined every shoot out scene I have watched in every other film that came out after it. When it comes to immersing you in what feels like the most realistic gun battle, there isn't a movie out there that comes close to Heat's climatic firefight. It sets the bar so high than no film to date has matched it.

I saw this when it came out and I didn't feel it. I watched it about ten years later and I've watched it a few times a year since. It's a masterpiece, not just of it's genre but the whole of film.
The firearms and tactics used were due to the technical advisor (Andy McNab) and instructor Mick Gould who spent a lot of time on set with Michael Mann and Robert De Niro. Gould was a civilian contractor brought in by the SAS to teach hand to hand combat skills to the serving Troopers. While Gould was not a badged SAS Trooper, he was an important part of the training staff and was a well-respected instructor at Hereford. After leaving SAS HQ Gould became a technical advisor on "Heat", but also "Taken", "Miami Vice", "Collateral" and "Ronin." And by all accounts quite a badass!
i didn't realise that Andy McNab was an advisor here. His first book about his upbringing and then his life in the paras and the SAS was excellent. Not full of BS and machismo but a down to earth an honest account of his life.

You know, that’s a really good idea. There are so many great older movies I’d love to see in the cinema again, (or for the first time). Much better than the CGI BS that is shown today! I know a few theaters do this. It used to be more common all over.
I was 28 in 95 and saw it with my then future ex wife. Everyone in the theatre was blown away. it was and still is epic.

That Heist Shootout..... One of the best. The music, the audio of the gun fire, the desperation of the escape. Outstanding scene.
When I watched that North Hollywood shootout I instantly thought of Heat.
Awesome movie , i watch it at least 20 times every year and it still keeps getting better.
Not 20 times a year myself, but at least 2 or 3. It never fails to amaze me and keep me invested in the entire movie, right up to the final shot and the main score swells.

As a South African, I can honestly say it's true this film sparked a Cash in Transit Heist epidemic at the time. There was even a robbery that involved an ambulance, a improvised Tyre strip & a crew of smooth, almost military like professionalism. Oh & every crook in the location (hood), ended up being nicknamed de Niro, as a homage to this great character. 👍
As a Brit, District 9 is a belter of a film - not quite Heat but up there.

This is a must watch at least 12-15 times a year. Maybe Michael Mann's best work. The two greatest actors of their generation & a supporting cast, most of whom could lead their own movie, batting clean up. Themes, motifs, character development and action. The best. Just incredible.

I remember Michael Mann saying that the Pacino character was addicted to coke, but the studio made him cut out any references to it. That is why Pacino acts the way he does in some scenes like the "gimme what you got" scene. Also, in one of the revised versions of the script, the stepdaughter was being molested by her father which is why she flips out about her lost earings and instead of cutting her wrists, she actually climbs naked into the shower behind Hannah who thinks it's his wife, but when turns around he's horrified to find his stepdaughter there.

Never did cocaine; but as a person who is susceptible to manic episodes I was totally on board with Pacinos acting. Although over the top (hence the coke habit) it's totally believable and relatable from my perspective.
the coke part is true. Al Pacino says that in interviews... I think I recall the phrase "chipping cocaine" ... idk about impiled or imagined sexual abuse of the stepdaughter. "heart attack man ...." .... on his 3rd marriage. .. yeah, I believe Pacino when he says the character included doing some blow. Why ditch this part of his life? It's ...so far from important. It's coke. He doesn't even have time to use it to drink more.

The film version of Miami Vice should have been better. Michael Mann produced the TV series in the 80s and it's fantastic. Great mix of action, drama, humor and characters. I think he missed the mark by trading that all in to go fully serious and bad casting choices with the film. Not terrible, just lacking alot of what made the source material so great. But I think you're right about Heat and Collateral.
Public Enemies was much better than Miami Vice

I get what Mann was trying to do here, and he missed the mark.. but I still like it, it feels like an arthouse experimental movie made in blockbuster budget. I like how Mann creates mood in that movie, sometimes without even any dialogue, you can just feel it, in its visuals.
you know It might sound funny, but I was actually going through depression and so many family problems when I watched MV. and that movie helped me convey my emotions and go through the hard times. which is way, I have a soft spot for it
Heat is perfection and in a very difficult genre to achieve such a status. Pacino and DeNiro are at the absolute top of their game here.
WTF happened to Heat… it became the greatest Hollywood film of the 1990s… however before that it was ignored by some critics and the awards committees in early 1996 when it came to that years nominations. Over 25 years later it not only became the greatest Hollywood film of that decade… IMO it became the greatest Hollywood film of the last three decades.
Now where is the 4K Blu Ray release

It's the greatest EVER!
Brilliantly shot. The shots of LA are pure art. When you combine that with the bleak atmosphere, the music, the firefight, the coffee scene..... It's just a perfect film. Even Pacino's occasional "exuberant" moments don't detract from it's flow. It's one of the few times I've seen director and actors take their crafts to that level.
I believe I read somewhere that his character is supposed to be a raving cokehead. I wish that it was shown so it would justify Pacino being over the top in alot of scenes.

But the studio said that it wouldn't be good to show a cokehead cop in a movie, so that's why they never show Pacino actually doing coke.

I feel it's the best of his late loud Pacino movies. Whereas I thought Scent of a Woman was garbage. My favorite late Pacino is probably 'The Insider' but even then I vacillate between favorites
Everyone was great in this movie. Pacino and De Niro really nailed it.
And of course one of my favourite actors Tom Sizemore did brilliantly.

This is a very welcome entry. I saw an unfinished print of this film several months before its release. It had no [final] score, the looping and sound wasn't finished, there were no titles, some shots had not yet been properly color-timed, effects were unfinished (Deniro and Brenaman's balcony scene was still a green screen, for instance) and editing was still in flux. Nonetheless, over lunch there was consensus that we had just viewed a modern classic. Any chance to learn a little bit about this extraordinary film is apprecaited.
I always wondered why is the balcony scene Greenscreen? As much as I love the movie, that scene always looked fake.
I. Love. This. Movie. Must watch at least once every year. Pacino and De Niro at their prime. Great acting, strong drama and awsome tension. The ending scene with beautiful music by Moby gets me every time.

@@bluelivesmatter719 while his performances were always great, he typically portrayed very obsessive, one-dimensional characters. Take Jimmy Conway... he was a complete sociopath, consumed by money, with his full emotional range on display when Tommy got whacked, and he let out a mix of comical whimpers and the usual rage on a telephone booth..
I think what we're seeing is that's because it's who he actually is. He has become a singular-minded caricature that he might portray in one of his films. His personality is so one note, it may as well be attributed to his "method acting"... tough guy who spews only two worded phrases like F Trump.
The funniest part to me is when he goes on one of his insult rants, he basically turns into Travis Bickle and starts naming off a series of animals in rapid succession to describe his foe reaching the point of absurdity... "he's a dog, a rat, a snake, a chicken... an elephant, an armadillo..."
It's almost similar to what happened to Brando.
Thousands of blank rounds fired on every take, not a single person shot. Its amazing how far proper safety and training goes.

Watched it at the cinema back in 1995(?) and thought it was an outstanding film - even though it seemed we watched a stone-wall classic almost every month around that time ‘Pulp Fiction’, ‘The usual suspects’ , ‘Shawshank redemption’ , ‘Seven’ etc. etc. I have probably watched Heat around 10 times since then as well, absolutely love that film.
Fantastic cast and absolutely love Michael Mann's work. Favorite scene for me was Charlene warning Chris off. The music was so haunting.
Val kilmer was also high as a kite during that scene.

Just rewatched this last night. This is one of the greatest movies ever. 10/10
Classic masterpiece
It's a perfect take on the genre, one so good that it redefined the genre around it.
It seems like the movie was so powerful and profound it even had an impact on the very environment its genre is depicting, i.e. the criminal underworld.
I’m remembered that bank shootout in 97… And Ashely Judd was my babe in blonde hair,and when she gestured to Val to “ move on and goodbye “it reminded me of me trying to patch things up with my ex but she was happy with someone else ! I checked in on her over the years to see what if but eventually lost touch! HEAT is definitely a classic on so many levels! The actors were at their peeks or surely will add this movie to their body of accomplishing work! Gonna make this my mission to watch this once again right now! Thanks for this content!

The Dark Knight wouldn't exist without this film.
The shootout scene is one of the most intense scenes ever made. Great movie, great cast. Honestly one of the best in both categories.
I (re)watched it last year because someone mentioned it and I must say, it's far better than what I remembered and the shoutout scene is one of the best action scenes ever
Yeah I didn't care for it when I watched it 25 years ago. I must give it another shot.

I didn't think much of it at the time. I watched it about ten years ago and I was awestruck. I think it was just ahead of its time.
27 years later this movie remains my favorite film of all times. While I hate to admit it, I've watched it at least a couple of dozen times (and there'll be more). Can't wait for the sequel. 👍🏿
This is the greatest crime action movie ever made, i think its amazing that Michael Mann had the courage to re-do a movie like that, never heard of a director coming back to re-direct something he was not satisfied with
What a fascinating background story. Heat is definitely one of my favorite movies .The way that the two main characters meet and talk about their feelings is fantastic. Everyone is great in their roles. I wish that more movies like Heat. Thanks for the video.
I have watched it at least a total of 10 times over the years, but had not seen it for almost a decade when I watched it again, less than two weeks ago. I was shocked how good it still helds up after all these years. A true classic. Perhaps on the top 20 list of my all time favourite fims, up there with the likes of Glory, An officer and a gentleman, Dead Poets society, The hunt for Red October, Groundhog day, Casino, Breakfast club and Goodfellas.
One of the best and thought through movies ever. The main plot, the subplots, all works together.
And the cast is just awesome.

Heat is my favorite crime drama film of all time. I love the "opposite side of the same coin" theme between Hanna and McCauley as well as the epic scope and realistic nature of the film. Possibly the best epic film without an epilogue. Instead we get some brief dialogue from the main characters that's the perfect lid for the story: "I told you I'm never going back."

The soldier that the shooting out of the car wind screen is based on, is Andy McNab , a former SAS member. Who was also one of the technical advisers and trainers on the movie.
Heat, is one of the best, if not the best, crime dramas.
And Mick Gould, also ex-SAS and he went on to train Tom Cruise for Collateral - Another Mann classic

Saw this the other night for the first time in probably 20 years. Are we too far away from the 90s to say what a great decade for movies it was, almost as good as the "Golden Age" of the 70s? When I saw it in the theater all I could think about after was the shootout, and no doubt it was one of the best action sequences of all time. But seeing it all these years later it's really about people who are workaholics and how it ruins their relationships with those around them. For all of Al Pacino's "GIMMIE WHAT YOU GOT"!!! loudness his relationship breaking up was really sad to watch. He had a beautiful third with and stepdaughter who really needed him but he was so consumed with his job. And all Robert De Niro has to show for his life of crime is a beachfront home with literally no furniture in it. He can't even tell his new girlfriend what he actually does for a living. He could have gotten away to New Zealand to a new life but could not resist getting even with Waingro. The thirty seconds of him in the tunnel, with his facial expression changing about ten times was some of the best acting of his great career. Not even a new life with a beautiful young woman could change him from being a stone cold killer.
Great film. I remember this being released right after casino. I was a big fan of godfather and goodfellas but casino was more of the same thing wrapped in a prettier package so it was kinda stale. This was a movie that smacked you and said "welcome to the 90's".

I’ll never forget going to see Casino. We got there late & the theater was packed! So we had to sit in the front row. Man was that a long 3 hours! 😂
Not a bad movie but what you described is pretty much how I felt about it. Heat on the other hand was just like “Whoa!” & Val in the 90s was incredible! It’s so sad to see what he’s had to deal with in recent years. 🙏
Recently it dawned on me how many of my favorite movies and TV shows Xander Berkley was a part of, and him playing the original Wayngro just blew my mind

Seeing De Niro and Pacino flow seamlessly in this movie together with an incredible supporting cast was a thing of beauty. Credit to Michael Mann for orchestrating this masterpiece and constructing the different stories.
Yeah but Al Pacino did Serpico,DogDay Afternoon,Scarface…Deniro did Taxi Driver ,Goodfellas the one in common was Godfather, that’s funny how they never did something together until this movie. Want deniro in The Deer Hunter??? Along with Christopher Walken and Jon Voight?
My buddy was actually in federal prison with Kevin gage who plays waingrow for a time at Sheridan Oregon. He got busted for a grow operation or something. Super nice guy.
Kevin Gage was married to the late great and beautiful Kelly Preston too.

Some movies get better and better on repeat viewing and this is one of them.
This movie is such a classic without even trying.. Michael Mann is Mad Underrated imo..i hope he has a comeback from his recent downfall in success but even if he doesn't he's one of the greats imo
I really like this presentation of a "review" of Heat. I knew it had some comparisons to real life, but never heard the whole story. BTW, this film should be a must watch for anyone that is a fan of the genre.

HEAT is one of those movies that when i am flipping through channels, i can watch it from any point in the movie until the end.

Deniro and his character were one of the greatest in film history, IMO.
Is it true that Pacino's character was originally supposed to have a coke problem but they cut it out of the movie? I heard Ben Affleck talk about that with Kevin Smith on one of their dvd commentary tracks a long time ago. I remember they were supposing that was the reason why Hanna is wide-eyed and bellowing at informants in one scene, then looking drained and disheveled in the next.
Yes. It is true. There is an interview I saw here on youtube called “Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Michael Mann reflect on 20 years of Heat with Christopher Nolan” where Pacino at the 8:30 time mark brings this up as to why he was so hyped up as a result of the background history of his character. 95 was a pretty good year: Heat, 12 Monkeys, Crimson Tide, Se7en and Die Hard With A Vengeance to name a few.
Crimson tide also has a truly amazing scene at the dinner table between Hackman and Denzel

Val was the only guy who could follow the rules, so he was the only one who got away.
Don't like Al's over acting as he got older. He is tolerable in this movie for me.

It's a gut-wrenching scene when Charlene warns Chris to not approach, both knowing they'll likely never see each other again.
It's more complex than that. Mann explained that each character has a full arc based on their personal philosophy.
Tom Sizemore had an out but was an action junkie so it's where he would end up.
Kilmer was postmodernist and didn't believe in anything except for his wife so that's what he had to lose.
Trejo was a follower/minion so died like one.
Deniro had a real code so paid the price for breaking it.
They all lose based on how they faced life.
This is an eminently rewatchable movie! Three hours, all great! Pacino + De Niro in that movie, just awesome! Highly Recommended!
