  • I know the video is long but it's informative. I go through 40 years worth of tones so an hour isn't that awful long 😆

    Wow, that was amazing comparison. Thank you so much! I have to ask that yugo tube is the one described in bkbutlers website as the special bias model? // The custom variable "Bias" mod version is available with an additional custom 5th control (I’ve made several of these for Eric Johnson, David Gilmour, Billy Gibbons and Joe Satriani) is available for $125 extra as it takes more time for me to build. The Bias control allows you to adjust the tube characteristics over a wide range. It's like changing the types of tubes anywhere from a weak 12AU7 to a blistering 12AT7. // if that's so, I'd like to order before its too late

      The yugo tube is the tube itself. It's some kind of special tube from Yugoslavia. I would get the bias mod along with the yugo tube for an ultimate tube driver! My low gain tube driver has a variable gain trim pot under the gain knob which is a little different from the bias one.

    I have a power boost clone, and I have found the exact same thing. Little to no gain, then crank it up almost all the way, then slap in your face insane gain. I use it to boost the muff, and I have used it to blend with an OCD. Power boost plus OCD sounds really good, and pinch harmonics are extremely easy to do. I was always curious about the tube driver, but the OCD does something similar, to me anyway. Powe booster is definitely essential in nailing those Animals/Wall tones. Shine On and Have a Cigar also sound great with the power boost. Animals 77 Live is my favorite DG sound. Bjorn does a great video on boosting the Muff too, if you haven't seen that. But judging from your board you probably have lol.

      I should try it with an ocd. I've been thinking about getting the cornish st-2. Pete said that it's voiced a little differently and the gain is more even through the knob sweep. Explains why gilmourish settings have the gain at 1:00-3:00 based off the st-2 while the power booster knob would need to be at 3-almost maxed to match the st-2. Yeah, definitely essential for the best Gilmour tones out there! Before the muff is great with fender ish amps. After the muff is the only way I can get it to sound good with my Hiwatts. A tube screamer before the muff always sounds good too.

      @@McLguitars I will have to remember this: "Powerboost before Muff makes Fender-ish amps sound good." This is VITAL INFORMATION!!! Using ANY old school fuzz, treble booster or overdrive pedals with old Fender amps takes some work as far as I'm concerned. It's that lack of compression and natural overdrive, mid-scooped ice-picky character that those amps had that makes em a little hard to work with in the gain department IMHO. But that's the nature of the beast I guess. Then again old school blackface/silverface Fender amps were not really designed or intended for that purpose. Opposite in fact. Super clean, high headroom, lots of volume with little to no distortion or break up. That is until SRV came along. Tubescreamer is bout the only overdrive pedal I can use with those amps to make em sound good. With single coil pickups anyway.

    • @McLguitars
      @McLguitars  3 роки тому

      @@jwillyb870 with older fender amps the speaker is very important. You want to run something with lots of headroom with a neutral/warm sound. Fane speakers with great. Ev speakers are good too. You just don't want any speaker breakup. Stacking overdrives with a fender amp is where the thick tones come from. Klon into a tube screamer for example. Unless the amp is really really loud (like on volume 7+) one pedal doesn't do much for drive. More for color.

    Excellent comparison. Thank you so much for the detailed review. At the moment, there aren't many videos dedicated to comparing the powerboost with more modern overdrive pedals. This is really useful information! I have a throbak overdrive boost (a clone of colorsound). It can also be used in a wide variety of ways. I think this is really a very interesting type of circuit. Less compression than more modern overdrives, but more opportunity to pay attention to the nuances of your own guitar playing.

      You're welcome! I have two throbak overdrive boosts I used to use. I enjoy them. The 9v vs 18v is really apparent when you get them next to each other. Not sure if they have an 18v version yet but the 18v is the way to go for sure if possible. Thanks for watching!

    Thanks for making this vid. Excellent comparison!
    I have the Tru-Fi Colordriver as well as the BLAMMO Voltage Booster...(as well as a 2021 made BK TD, which is just so damn big and difficult to power on a pedalboard). To me, the BLAMMO pedal is the superior "version/incarnation" for not only its 9v-18v versatility, but its more refined overall sound. It's slightly "less raw", I guess....while still sounding plenty old and raw. Almost like it's 9v setting is more like 10 or 11v. It has a bit less of that static/scratchy sound...while still sounding basically like a fuzz when the gain is turned up. It's also WAY more pedalboard friendly with its overall size and its top mount jacks. Ultimately, both pedals are winners if you're going for "that" sound. Both the Tru-Fi and BLAMMO pedals absolutely do not exhibit the bizarre, short range/sweep of the gain knob on your Solasound. They are very linear. Of course, that takes nothing away from the excellent sound of your Solasound. Plus, that thing is sweet looking!
    Again, thank you for making this video. Loved every second of it. It's gonna be the go-to comparison vid for folks looking for DG's sound using these pedals for a long time. Cheers!

    Well I got a tube driver with the yugo tube and you were absolutely right. I can actually make it sound smooth and glassy like the powerboost now. This is a game changer for me cause I love using my red strat with EMGs because of their versatility but I just can’t use them with the powerboost. It’s circuit doesn’t like the active pickups

      I'll occasionally boost the muff with it but primarily I use it in combination with a compressor and Univibe for the any colour you like jam. Also good for when you need feedback and your amp isn't very loud. Kick on the tubescreamer while your muff is on and you'll get feedback pretty easily.

    Awesome tone man! You got it nailed. The powerboost is my favorite overdrive of all time which led me to using a fuzz face (silicon) for my own tones to get that glassy kind of sound. I have a tube driver but I could never make it sound as good as you. It never sounded as open as yours.

      Thanks! I agree I like the power boost. It's so good! The tube makes a huge difference. Contact butler and see if he will sell you a yugo tube. They're reserve tubes that Gilmour, Eric Johnson, bonamassa, etc get. I think the only reason he offered them to me is because I mentioned I was in a pink Floyd tribute and wanted to buy two of them. Totally a guess on that though. Makes a world of difference! They're like $70 for a preamp tube but proof is in the tone! Btw, I still watch your videos from time to time 😁 I'm a fan!

      @@Coopersboy7 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻 I'm checking that out right now! My issue with fuzz faces is every time my guitar volume is at zero I get this awful hum that is about as loud as the fuzz is. That's with any 108 fuzz plugged into my power brick. I even had one custom built with a post circuit buffer that should've eliminated it and it didn't lol. So I just put my wah backwards where my fuzz used to be! Definitely going to look into that pedal for sure!

    • @McLguitars
      @McLguitars  2 роки тому +1

      The Hiwatt little d is nothing like a real Hiwatt when it comes to how you adjust the knobs. If you have a little d (insert joke here) I'd be more than happy to share my settings. So a real Hiwatt head's treble, middle, bass presence, etc knobs are essentially individual cuts for very narrow frequency bands. The little d knobs are full spectrum like a fender amp is. On the little d and a fender when you turn up the middle you get a full mid range bump. When you turn up the mid knob on a real Hiwatt only one specific frequency range is affected.
      You definitely need a volume pedal with the little d otherwise it sounds like an ac30 👎🏻
