A "Reach around" Nozzle.... that gave Me a Chuckle for the Day ! 😊 LOL 🤣
Thanks Brad . 👍👍
Cheers ✌️ 🤙 🇨🇦
Love the Ola Englund reference. Keep up the good work.
Nice Brad! I love to learn about old pedals ... don't want to own one, but sure love to see videos about them 🙂
I had one of those pedals back in the day when they first came out with them. Never was my cup of tea tbh. Cool simple fix. Kudos champion..!
Sweet As! I love seeing work done on pedals too. This one sounds great too - never seen a pedal with hard-wired mains power or an actual tube in it! Wild!
Had several of them, also the rack version, but they all did not convince me much, so I sold them again.
"Everybody Kwang Chung tonight...."!🤣
I have one of these I ordered from B.K Butler. I included the bias option and the magic marker + Bias _ was how B.K. made them. The output level can get real hot. They do sound great!
Aloha Brad! I used to put that in front of my SF Vibro Champ which I used the 2-12" JBL of my Twin. Loud clear and sustaining. Miss it much
Have the same pedal except 110v. One built by the designer of the original Tube Driver pedal, B.K. Butler.. Unfortunately it a dust magnetic for me, but rare enough to not sell. And I have the box!
If you set the Hi / Lo EQ settings to 8pm or 9pm then the whole range of the OD control can be used. In short the EQ settings should not be set (as per what we normally do) in the middle of the range. You should start with them low and work your way up.
Nice peek inside one of those. Gilmour used 'em...seems like a good little tool when you need more juice.
cheers!.
My first dirt pedal (1991?) was the butler blue tube. Used it on bass. I remember it sounded “good enough” as a dirty boost/overdrive. I bought the Mesa dual tube pedal overdrive after seeing the bassist for Brutal Juice use one. I wish I still had both! ❤
Pretty neat! I think I've seen this pedal before, but I've never heard it.
Sounds amazing
Nice little pedal...Mains as well, unusual nowadays..Cool fix..Ed..uk..😀
Thanks Brad.
Nice mate
With the earth I would have measured it first, if the resistance was low enough and did not change with a wire wiggle then leave it.
I like that term; marketing valve.
Reach around! Crikey!
Nice! Reminds me a bit of the old Real McTube design, minus the back to back 12VDC trannies
I have a mid-90s, three knob version which is powered by an external dc adapter. On my version, Butler addresses the tube retention problem with a glob of glue from a hot glue gun. 😂
That bias pot is an option when you buy one, that's original. It's an extra US$125 (WTF!!!!) for the pot, and the sharpie writing comes free
I have 2 Chandler Tube Driver Rack units, same era, and they sound insanely different. Circuits exactly the same, but do you think if I just recap them both(all caps) with the same values, and get new Op Amps, that it should get them matched closer? Think I should replace all the resistors and that too? Think it would help? Other than the tube, what things do you think affect the overall sound? Is it just a combination of everything, or is it more to do with particular components?
Also, and idea if theres a way to calibrate, or bias them(other than the bias knob)?
Thanks brother!
I had the Dean Markley Overload during the late 80s when I was a teenager. I do not know how similar they sound to the BK one, but I was not thrilled with it. It did not make my shite solid state amp sound like a valve one as the sales rep told me.
Neither did a Boss HM-2 make my amp sound like Jimi Hendrix like they said it would. That HM-2 cost me a beautiful 1955 Gibson SJ acoustic I had traded them for it and a bunch of other new stuff to go electric. None of which is worth much now and is probably in a landfill. They always saw me coming I guess. Hopefully I wised up more with each decade that passed. 🤣
Re. Marketing tubes. I wonder if the ECC83 tube replaced by FETs would sound much different if the circuit is the same, i.e., if the FETs are doing the job of the triodes. Maybe, but my beat up old ears might not hear it.
P.S. On a headfirst live stream I asked about legit looking replica plexi era JMP head shells for my amp build here in NZ. They said you are the man for the job. I have not priced one from the USA or Europe where price plus shipping stays under the NZ$1000 dollar threshold for import duty and 15% GST. Maybe Aussie based would. I just bought an IR-X and now it is time to do all the Xmas prezzies, so it would be in the new year I am looking at doing that. Cheers.
With the bias it's pretty new. Maybe ten years old? 🎉
I've fixed the later black version before. The tube mounting in these is not particularly reliable. They will also come loose if you send the pedal through the post, gotta be careful if you sell these
To secure the tube better, a springy L-shaped piece of metal could be bolted down underneath the stomp switch and have a hole and a rubber grommet in it for the exhaust tip of the tube to sit in. What is that anyway, a 12AT7?
Hmm, it looks more like a frame-grid triode, like a 6DJ8, beloved of audiophiles everywhere for some unknown reason.....
Looking at the plug open shot,, to me it looks like the earth is going to the left (viewed from above) terminal. Is that right? I thought earth was the centre one - hopefullly I am mistaken...
Obviously you are or I'd be dead and the shop would be on fire. Lol!
It's an angled plug, sorta like the piggyback ones, but without the socket.
What does the valve do in these?
It adds 3rd harmonic distortion - depending on your ear, a pleasant distortion.
No wonder the pros that use these things have a crate full of them on the road.
"Real Tube Inside - Overdrive" is more like it. Is it really that hard to come up with 10ma of current at 100vdc to at least try to make a 12AX7 work like an amp?
So since zero bias at 100 volts on the plates will only draw 2 ma. How are you getting 10ma positive grid drive then ?
@@johnwilliamson467 positive plate current in a 12AX7 at 100v is typically 0.5ma. 10ma of available current is 10 times any plausible need for both triodes.
@@matthewf1979 so you see the point that 10 ma in a 12ax7 just does not happen. If low voltage of 10ma is needed a pentode like an e81l or el84 will do the job.
@@johnwilliamson467 I’m talking about the power supply, not the tubes. 10ma/100vdc is just an arbitrary number that would be inexpensive and powerful enough.
If you added HT windings to the toroidal filament transformer that’s in the pedal already , it wouldn’t be much larger and wouldn’t cost a whole lot more.
@@matthewf1979 well that does make sense for a size of a power supply for ax au types.
woulda loved to known the plate voltage
Schematic is available all over the internet.
I think it’s 30
impossible @@zenlandzipline
@@geezberry8889 anything is possible bro. You just gotta have an open mind, and believe in your dreams.
no dream can become reality with 30 volts on the plates the tube can't even operate. more like 300 volts @@zenlandzipline
Low voltage... Hmmm
Most of that is not original; detented pots, toroidal transformer, bias control, my '80s Tube driver has none of the above. Then again, mine's the US 110-120V version.
