    To be honest; the kit lens isn't bad considering the small size, the cheap cost of $100, the zoom range (16-50), and the fact that it's optically stabilized! It's definitely not even close to the sigma 16 when you zoom in and pixel peep, but just looking at them side by side before he zoomed in, they looked comparable! Good for social media type stuff for sure.

    Wow! The sigma makes the 16-50 look like it came from a mobile phone camera. Now I see the worth in the price. Just got my a6400 2 days ago!🙌🏾😄

    Just bought the Sigma 16mm, the Sony a6000 with kit lens and the Zhiyun Crane v2. They all arrived just in time for two commercials that I'm going to film, one for a dentist and the other one for a gym. Super stoked and oh my what a great camera the a6000 is!! Can't believe it was released back in 2014! Keep up the good work, looking forward for more videos from you!

      I'm actually just starting out. I contacted a around eight places not too far from where I live and two of them really liked my offering, so they want me to shoot commercials for them. I hope that everything will go well and that this can become a fun and satisfying source of income for me, as I'm a student who happens to love videography.

      I tested the Panasonic G85 and the AF was really poor on that camera. I use a gimbal and AF is key. You cannot hold the gimbal with one hand and focus with the other, becuase you will just tend up getting jittery footage. Manual focusing when you track something is also really hard to master, so good AF is a must. If you're shooting music videos, your subject will probably move or you will move to get exciting footage so AF really helps. Because of that, all Panasonic cameras are not interesting for me. Their IBIS is really good but they don't cooperate with the gimbal, so it's no help for me personally. Sony IBIS is really great, becuase it makes the gimbal footage even smoother. Left for me became Canon, Fujifilm and Sony, because it's those three brands that have good AF, but Sony and Canon has the edge over Fujifilm. Now I realised that Fujifilm lenses are really expensive, and their cameras have rubbish auto ISO becuase the camera changes ISO in steps, making the changes very apparent in the final footage. That made me exclude Fuji cameras from my wishlist. Why I went with Sony over Canon is because of two reasons: Sony is much more innovative and they have implemented IBIS and excellent 4K in their recent cameras. Now I know that I don't have to worry over the future of Sony cameras, because they continue innovating. The second reason is the excellent Sigma 16mm f/1.4 lens. You cannot find this lens for Canon unless you spend some serious money. This is the perfect lens for video because it's wide, has great AF and it suits even low-light conditions. It also gives very nice bokeh, making the footage seem much more pro. Low-light is important because I never know if the location I'm going to shoot in will be well lit. If I'm creating a commercial for a cafeteria, they might have very poor lighting. With the Sigma 16mm, I don't have to worry about that. Because Sony is innovative, I don't need to worry about investing in E-mount lenses.
      Why I chose the A6000 is because I don't colourgrade professionally yet, so SLOG that is available in the A6300 and 6500 doesen't matter. The neutral colour profile is good enough for beginners. Secondly, I don't need 4K yet and I'm quiet shure that the businesses that I'm shooting for won't ask for it. Therefore no need to pay more for 4K. Also, I like using 60fps when on a gimbal. The A6300/6500 doesn't have 4K 60fps. I fould use full hd anyways and the A6000 has better full hd image than it's more expensive brothers. All in all, I saved money with the Sony a6000 and I got a great camera with exceptional AF. The money that I would spend on A6300/6500 can be spent on lenses which are far more important IMO. I would wait if I were you to see what camera Sony will release now in January. It may be the a7000 with improved IBIS and 4K 60. Because you don't want to use a gimbal, IBIS is nice to have. Or get the a6500 now if you need it now.

      hey..how does you combo work together? The sigma is kind of heavy. I have a Zhiyun Crane v2 and I'm thinking of getting a a6000 for gimbal shots but for low light I think the Sigma 16mm f1.4 would be great even without stabilization...any issues balancing them the a6000 with the sigma on the Zhiyun crane? did you get good video? I'd love to see your work. thanks

    would have been interesting to compare low light handheld f1.4 vs f3.5 on the kit lens as the sigma does not have OIS that usually give you a 3 stop advantage.

    For $100 with the kit it’s a good starter lens. I would use it when needing to quickly go between 16-50, and when recording video on the 6400 you get OSS and a smooth power zoom.

    Thanks for this post (as well as the other content on your channel). I've learned a lot from the work that you've done and appreciate it greatly.
    There's much to like about the kit lens - value, portability, versatility, and the fact that it came bundled with the camera - these are especially beneficial for novices like myself. The advantages of the Sigma 16mm appear quite undeniable though. But for those who do not wish to carry multiple lenses (nor want to/or can't spend the money on these), there's much that can be appreciated for the Sony 16-50mm lens so its shortcomings can be "forgiven".
    To that extent - what are your thoughts on using Clear Image Zoom on the Sony A6400? I think this is one way of giving the Sigma 16mm 1.4 prime lens zoom capability but I'm not sure if this affects image quality of photos/videos significantly. If the Clear Image Zoom effect is somewhat negligible then this can make prime lenses suitable for all-around use.
    Thanks once again.

    In real world use the lack of OSS on the Sigma becomes a challenge in low light conditions where high depth of field is needed. In cases where a tripod can be used not so much of an issue. As a non-pixel-peeper I see only minor differences in ordinary use with advantage to Sigma but significant size, weight and cost tradeoff is required. The Sigma eliminates coat pocket carry option.

    Okay you did all the work for me. I just put the Sigma 16mm 1.4 on my wish list today (birthday coming up). Of course the 16-50 will still find it's way onto my a6500 simply because of the focal range and how small it is. But when I want sharp images I'll know which lens to mount. Thanks and good job.
    One thing that would be great is if you had your wife in a corner of the frame in addition to the center. Focusing on her then would show how sharp the lens is in the corner.

The Sony 35mm F1.8 was my first choice till the Sigma 16mm came out and now I'm not sure which one to get. Two more important facts: 1. I'll be traveling to Indonesia this fall and I think 70% of the time I'll be taking landscape pictures, but I would also like to take some good portraits; 2. Right now the Sigma 16mm costs about 450 € here in Germany and the Sony 35mm about 350 €. I know both lenses are quite different and hard to compare but maybe you could tell me your opinion on the matter?

    The problem is if you stop down a lens more than it's widest aperture it does perform better. Here I see you capture the sigma from not 1.4 but 3.5 which means 2 stops stopped down. And for the kit lens f3.5 is it's weakest aperture. I am not saying the kit lens is better than the sigma here but stopped down to smaller aperture it can come closer

    That said, the obvious suggested next ".vs" videos for the Sigma 16mm 1.4 would be

    Thanks for the comparison. Really enjoy your channel! The Sigma is one of the few products I've had enough faith in to preorder and it's a great lens. However, it seems like missed focus on the Sony for the clock shot (the background is much sharper 9:13). With the shots at 10:10 or so, the Sigma is darker so I think that exaggerates the difference. The Sony is blurrier and still wouldn't match the Sigma even if the exposures were the same, but it's hard to say how close they would be just from the video.

    A little late to the party here, but you should have turned the in-camera lens adjustments off for the kit lens to make this comparison fair.
    The camera is actually even altering the raw files for the kit lens due to how bad it is, which includes corrections to distortions and vignetting. That's why you thought the Sigma had more barrel distortion at 8:05, when in fact it's simply a case of the Sigma lens not being corrected in-camera like the kit lens.

    Great video, but I agree the 20mm vs Sigma would a good comparison as well since they are both prime lenses.
    Quick question about Sigma vs Sony in general. Aren't the Sony's always better at focus speed and tracking since Sony lenses can take advantage of all/most of the Sony focus benefits where no-native cannot?

    • @ArthurR
      @ArthurR  6 років тому

      Yes - you are correct. Historically the older Sigma lenses were noticeably slower and less accurate at autofocus. This 16mm is the best autofocusing Sigma I've tried. Partly because it is wide (16mm is easier to focus than 60mm, for example), but also because the focusing system is vastly improved even over the Sigma 30mm F1.4.

      Honestly I am so disappointed with the QC issues of the 10-18 F4 that I wont ever buy that lens again. Even when I had it, it was barely (if any) sharper than the 16-50mm kit lens.

    Good comparison review.
    IMO most kit lens with most manufacturers on non pro cameras are bundled with the camera to get you started right out of the box.
    I always by body only and source a lens afterwards. Sigma C range is pretty damn good and the Art range are amazing for the price.
    I own a NEX5R and I do have a 16mm f2.8 pancake lens which does give a soft image over the kit lens 18-55 f3.5-f5.6. My kit lens is actually pretty good for sharpness, however a sigma C version is on my shopping list

  • @MichaelTapel
    @MichaelTapel 6 років тому

    It is sharper and probably better at low light, but I’d also suggest to make the comparison with the kit lens at 16mm f5.6 which suppose to be the sharpest aperture for Sony lens, any way to me it ain’t worth 450$ more sharper, I’ll probably go with the sigma 30mm since its more useable for portraits and general photography.

    Finally we have got a wider lens that is both affordable, sharp and with af.
    16-70 and 10-18 were both overpriced for what they were.
    Any chance you could take a closer look at Sony 85mm f1.8?

      Christian Masvikeni The Sigma 30mm 2.8 was the first lens I bought and it's fantastic. I don't have a direct comparison but I can tell you what everyone online already has - it is one of the best bargains out there. Tack sharp, clear edges, good color and it's 2.8, where the kit lens is like 4.6 at 30mm. Some of my best shots have been with that lens.

      TechnologyMafia Thanks! I use the 50mm for portraits and I really like the focal length for that application. Both the 16mm and 35mm look like excellent lenses but your comment made my mind up and I’ve just arrived home with my 16mm - can’t wait to try it out! For landscapes do you still recommend the Samyang 12mm f2 or will the sigma perform better here?
