I like to travel light, so the 10-18mm + 18-135mm are the perfect core kit. Throw in the 35mm OSS for a compact prime and you've got a great stabilized travel setup that fits in a tiny bag!

I started my upgrade path by getting the MC11, as I wasn't sure which focal length I would be using the most, or even what lens to buy; but I knew for definite the sigma 18-35 was going to be purchased at some point. My first lens though was the Sigma 18-200 (which I could use on the MC11) was bought as a general hack, as I couldn't afford the Sony 18-105 at the time, and I was happy enough with it, despite the weight and bulk. I then got the Sigma 18-35, which I love, and I also bought and adapted a used Canon 10-18 to go on the MC11 too. Which for the amount of time I use a wide angle, suited my needs for a very small outlay. I then went native glass, and purchased the excellent Sony 18-135 after watching your review (when it came within my budget) which makes the sigma 18-200 now only useful when I need a bit of extra reach, as it's outgunned in every department by the Sony 135. After your recommendation and review of the Sigma 16mm, I also bought one of those too, but I have yet to try it out in the real world, due to lockdown in the UK. So now I can only think of one more lens I would like to own, which is the Sigma 50-100 f1.8, but I think it will be a bit of a monster on an APSC body, so I may just go for another one of your recommendations, and get the Sigma 56mm instead. Keep up the good work Arthur :)

I've gone through a lot of lenses for my Sony APS-C cameras. My keepers are: Sony 18-135 mm zoom, Sony 70-350 mm zoom and the Sigma 30 mm f1.4.
The Sony zooms, shot at f/8, offer terrific sharpness, and the image stabilization is a huge help for my advancing years. The Sigma 30 mm is a great lens as well, and gives me speed for when I need it.

I own the 16-55 f2.8 and the 90 mm macro 2.8 with the a6500 and am pretty happy with the focal range covered, wide, streets, events, portrait, products, macro, I don’t really do sports or wild so right now spending money on a telephoto lens is not a must, I’ve tried the sigma 16 mm & 56 mm 1.4 and the performance is amazing, if changing lenses in different situations is not a problem for you go after the sigma 16 &56, in my case the double price difference with the 16-55 is justified with no bags, no different lenses, not dropping lenses, no sensor damage while changing lenses, but again is my particular case, hope this help.

For a lot of people doing amateur travel photos, Sigma 16 is huge. Sony's 16mm f2.8 is tiny and with the wide angle adapter is very wide and it weights like 100grams. If you're doing non-pro work, it is great for landscape or even a general walk around wide angle f2.8 lens. It can even do milky way shots and night skies like a champ (as long as you ignore the corners :) )

  • @n3cph0en1x

I have an a6500 body, so I went for having the Sigma f1.4 trio.
With this combo I have a stabilized setup, with a very good all-round performance. If I know what I am gonna shoot, I choose accordingly, and shoot with the Sigmas. If I switch to tourist mode, and I don't know what comes next, I use the old and trustworthy Sony 18-200 (not LE, the original) Silver Dragon. It's heavy, it's clumsy, it's not very wide aperture, BUT it beats both of the kit lenses (16-50 and 55-210) on the respective focal length, wide open as well as stopped down to f8 (which is how I normally use it, in good light conditions). It is VERY flexible to use it, as well as decent quality compared to a tourist zoom. I plan to extend this 4 lenses with a macro lens.

Nice video Arthur, I enjoy a lot watching it. I use mostly old manual lenses (I have more than twenty...) except the awesome Sigma 16 f1,4. Your opinion was very important to bought it.
I was surprise you haven't any tele lens! I have a macro 90mm (very useful to portraits as well), four 135mm (CZJ from DDR, Jupiter for Soviet Union, Olympus an Takumar from Japan, all of the really nice) and one 200mm (a great Pentax SMC f4) I love these kind of lens to sport events or fauna shootings and also for street photography. So I was surprised you only have a 75mm. Try something around 135 or 200mm in manual, is really impressive in performances but really useful in street photography!
Thanks again for your work! Lets see if the situation became better in USA and Europe very soon! We work in tourism promotion and we'd like to go to the States to promote quality tourism! Best wishes for you and for everyone in 2021!

Geez, you're right about the Sigma 56mm being sharp. I assume that was the lens you were using in the video to highlight the Tamron at the end. It was razor sharp! Oh, I also just got the Sigma 16mm to add to my collection based on your previous review. It's a keeper! So, currently got the Sigma 16mm and 30mm, the kit 16-50mm and the Sony 18-135mm. I think that'll do for now.... Although that macro lens looks interesting....

I focus on landscape, travel, and surf photography. Current setup is the a6300, Rokinon 12 f/2.0 (manual focus), Rokinon 21 f/1.4 (manual focus), Sony 50 f/1.8 OSS, and Sony 70-350 f/4.5-6.3 G OSS. Mainly use the Rokinon 21 for general purpose. The Rokinon 12 is only used for tight indoor areas, landscapes that require wide angles, and occasional astro shots. I only use the Sony 50 for portraits (not often). The Sony 70-350 is my primary surf photography lens. I used to use the Sony 55-210 with an Olympus TCON-17X, but recently upgraded to the 70-350 during Sony's trade up promotion.

Have the A6300, Started with two minolta manual/auto lenses had to get adaptors for those, one is a 35-70mm f/4 and a 70-210mm f/4, super nice pretty big tho and creamy but the 35-70mm is great for broll in my opinion. Then I got the 16-50mm kit lense for my youtube webisodes. Then the Sigma 16mm after watching your review about 20 times plus a bunch of other opinions as well. and I just got the 7artisans 60mm f/2.8 macro today, same after your review. Wanted to get a little closer than the sigma could and I just started shooting with it but I think it's going to be amazing.

I agree with most of what you say especially the Sigma trio. My APS-C lens collections (for my Sony a6500 and back-up a6000) consists of: Sigma 8-16; Rokinon 12 F2; Sigma 16 F1.4; Sigma 30 F1.4; Sigma 56 F1.4; Sigma 18-35 F1.8 (excellent lens!); Sigma 50-100 F1.8 (excellent lens but heavy); Samyang 50 F1.2 (excellent and very sharp lens!); Samyang 100 F2.8 Macro (excellent manual lens); Samyang 135 F2 (excellent manual lens); Sigma 100-400 F5-6.3 (amazing quality for the price!) ; and obviously the Sony APS-C kit lens which I hardly ever use even though it is actually not too bad for the size and cost; I have as well a few old Canon FE manual lenses I still adore but rarely use. So we agree on many of the lenses....which is affirming. Keep your great videos coming.

I started out in 1980 with a Canon A-1 film camera with three lenses. I got very tired of hauling around all of that gear and vowed I wouldn't have another interchangeable lens camera... But. In 2010 I bought a Sony A55. Now my lens collection is no testament at all to my long ago resistance.
I have two bodies, a6500 and a6400, which I often use together just so I can have two lens options without going through the change-over action.
My current lens collection reflects two areas. 1) Family and individual portraits. 2) Casual home and travel.
    1) The Sony 16-55 kit lens. I find that my phone takes better photos and is always with me. I rarely use this lens.
    2) The Sigma trilogy that you have (16, 30, 56)
    a) I rarely use the Sigma 16mm because it doesn't fit my style and if I want that wide I'll use the Sony 18-105. I don't like the distortion and often have to correct it in post.
    b) The 30mm is a great lens. It's a bit wide for family portraits but there are occasions where I do use it.
    c) The 56mm is a fantastic portrait lens. Super sharp. It often leaves me speechless when I view the images from this lens. For portraits it is usually the lens I use. I've also had great results using this lens for indoor basketball because it is fast and just enough telephoto for that action.
    3) The Sony 35mm f1.8. This and the Sigma 30 are very close in sharpness but this one is stabilized so I tend to use it on my non stabilized a6400. Ultimately the Sigma 30mm or this lens should be sold but I don't need the money and I'm reluctant to get rid of either one.
    4) The Sony 85mm f1.8. Great lens. New to me. I haven't used this too much yet. I bought it for portrait work. Its sharp and I like the design.
    5) The Sony 18-105 f4 is the lens that made me upgrade from A Mount cameras to E Mount cameras. That focal length zoom just wasn't available in A Mount and it seemed to be perfect for many situations. This is my walk-around, vacation, family event lens. It isn't super sharp wide open but at f4-f8 it is pretty good. It is versatile but a bit large. I like the constant aperture. I actually think this lens can be used for portraits but I haven't tried that yet.
    6) The Sigma 70-200 f2.8 A Mount. This is the only lens I kept from my A Mount days. I love this lens. It is super sharp, constant aperture, fast focus, and quiet. However it simply doesn't work well on my E Mount cameras and I've tried both A-E adapters. It will focus but the hit/miss rate isn't good. I've put it on eBay for a high price because I'm not sure I want to sell it. Thankfully nobody was willing to pay my price so I can keep it around for a while.
I would like the new 16-55 f2.8 but it is simply out of my price range.

I don't shoot video much, but have been thinking about getting something for long exposure and macro shots that is easy to position, much like a joby gorillapod 3k or 5k, as I don't want a full tripod really. My hang up is gorillapods seem to not last too long from reviews I have seen, and most the other small tripods are borderline on weight for a camera with a heavier lens. Cheers!

I bought the 16-55, it is great. It was 100 off and with the B&H store card they refund the tax. But it does not substitute the Sigma 16mm for dark interiors. 2 stops are quite a bit. But having a zoom can allow taking better photos, focusing on framing and composition, rather than juggling cameras or prime lenses. keeps the shooting simple. For traveling probably I'd take the 16-55 and the Sigma 30 for low light portraits. Or the 16-70. The 16-50 is so cheap it is not worth selling as it may come handy as a backup or for light video setup.

100%. My combo: Sony a6600: Sony 16-55mm, Sony 70-350mm, Sigma 30mm. Excellent travel combo. I only use the Sigma 30mm during travel for two main reasons, if I want that extra bokeh for environmental portraits (which is rare, I prefer F/2.8 - F/4 actually because i wanna see the background more, when the scenery is that beautiful why blur it out?!). Or two, extreme low light shooting at night.

Well, I have two older APC-S cameras (a6000 and a6300) and don't feel like spending money on newer models: I can live with usability issues they have, but maybe will buy a new a6xxx model if Sony will make a new APS-C sensor in coming years.
    I have 4 APS-C lenses:
    - standard kit 16-50 that came with camera
    - Samyang (=Rokinon) 12mm 2.0 - because I took part in some photography tours and a professional astrophotgrapher told me it was the best option to date for that kind of photography: meteor showers, northern lights, Milky way. In my opinion it's really great for those purposes, I use it a lot for night sky photography.
Came out, it can also do nice underwater photography with Meikon housing, tried it in Egypt by snorkeling.
    - Zeiss 16-70 4.0 - used to be first lens I bought to replace the kit lens, but now (four years later) I almost never use it, prime lenses just give much better quality and are better in low light
    - Sigma 56 1.4 - yep, it's my favorite portrait lens.
That's it. In previous year I didn't buy a lot, cause I spent all savings on A7III camera body, Sony 24 1.4 GM and Sony 85 1.8 lenses, can't wait to test new camera for astrophotography too.
