    I’ve got the sigma 18-50 2.8 and was looking for a good prime lens for portraits. I’ve been going back and forth b/n the16 and 30mm lenses and I just haven’t been able to make up my mind! I’ve watched countless hours of videos and read infinite reviews and just haven’t been able to decide.
    Until now.
    I’m getting both.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  5 років тому +3

      If I had to choose one, I would go with the 30mm for the better portraits of the kids. 16mm is much wider, so it's better for landscapes and stuff for travel, but not the best for portraits, unless you want full body shots and some scenery in the background also. If that is the case, I would go for the 16mm lens. Best of luck!

    Rewatched the last part because... well we all have to work and there is not enough time to do what we actually want to do right? :). That being said, i own the 30mm 1.4 for a while now and it's still the best lens i have bought so far for my Sony 6500. I started with the NEX 5n and changed it to the NEX 6 u still own because of the review u posted years ago. We are finally planning a trip to the Finse Lapland, the 16mm 1.4 performance is outstanding and suits really wel for the things we wanne shoot while we are out there... Thanks for the irl review and showing off the sharpness on your lab tests, back to work and get this beast before we are going on our trip.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  3 роки тому

      That is a hard decision, because they are both awesome. It really depends on your type of photography preference. 16mm offers a wider view, so it tends to be better for Landscapes, whereas the 30mm can be used for portraits and other things. Each lens offers a different view of the world... Do you have the 16-50mm kit lens? If so, what focal range do you use most with that lens?

    Hi Jay, nice review, very well explained. I was going to buy the Rokinon 12mm to add to my current kit (Sony 18-135mm), but the Sigma 16mm seems much better in IQ. Although, the 16mm is close to the 18mm of my kit. I haven't had the opportunity to shoot with something wider than 18mm and can't rent lenses here in my country. So, I was wondering if you could give me some advice on this. Thanks and greetings from Argentina.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  5 років тому +2

      Hi Pablo and thanks for the kind words. The Rokinon 16mm f/2 Lens(bhpho.to/2GGOaGC) is a very nice option, but not as fast as the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Lens (bhpho.to/2Ay1yIo) which has the f/1.4 aperture. In addition, the Sigma is significantly lighter weight which makes a difference on those long carry days. Also, the Sigma has Autofocus which works excellent for both photos and video! The price point is where the Sigma hits the wallet harder at $289 vs $399 with current promotions at the time of this reply, but I think it is totally worth the extra cash. Between the faster aperture, light weight, and killer autofocus, it's pretty much a no brainer in my book. I would go with the Sigma!! amzn.to/2GWablW

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  5 років тому +2

      Hello and Yes, I would recommend getting a variable ND filter like one of these: bhpho.to/2NpyOg2 The reason, is encase you are not aware, is you want to keep your shutter speed at twice what your recording frame rate is. For example, when recording at 24p, you would want your shutter speed to be at 1/50sec for the best results. 30p, you would want 1/60sec shutter speed. 60p you would want 1/120sec... With the variable ND filter, you can easily dial in the filter to get your shutter speed down to 1/50sec while shooting in bright sunny conditions, and while having the aperture wide open for those killer shallow depth of field effects this lens is capable of producing. I hope that helps ;) Jay

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  4 роки тому

      Thank you! For live streaming I would not use a picture profile, because they usually require grading in post to look their best. I would just have the camera set-up with the proper white balance and exposure and stream away. There might be a good way to do it with Picture profiles and be live, but at thsi time I'm not aware of how to do that or recommend, sorry... I just started using HLG 2 for my videos, but they are not live.. It looks pretty crappy unless you grade it first. It's totally possible when using an Atmos Ninja for example, it can live grade, but again I have not tried that nor do I have any experience with that stuff yet... Sorry, I hope that helps a little ;) Jay

    The lab scene is... Actually quite soft in the corners for both lenses at f1.4 Test a real sharp lens you will be surprised how much difference lens makes in terms of corner sharpness. Like a Zeiss Batis 18mm or Sigma 28mm ART.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  4 роки тому

      Yes, but at f/1.4 that is still very sharp compared to other APS-C lenses at f/1.4, especially for the price! The Zeiss Batis lenses for example are significantly better, no question, but they are not as fast, designed for full frame cameras and are way larger in size, and cost way more money so this makes sense. All that needs to be factored in as well don't ya think? WHen I review cheaper lenses like the 7artisans 55mm f/1.4 Lens, the corner sharpness was horrible compared to the Sigmas as a real world example. So, for the money the f/1.4 results were really good I thought. I really appreciate the feedback and your point is well taken Frank ;)

    • @frankluo230
      @frankluo230 4 роки тому +1

      @@Jason_Hermann I get it for the price sigma lenses are excellent. However as part of the review, when comparing objective results, soft or sharp or corner excellence are of objective standards IMO. For example, mtf50 above 2200lp/mm is excellent, between 1500-2200 is very good so on and so for. It can't be all 'considering the price' otherwise we will never be able to compare lens at different price points.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  4 роки тому +2

      Yes, I agree Frank, but my reviews are real world perspective based more for beginner level photographers. I don't go into technical information at that level, but your point is totally valid. For the money, these lenses are very good at f/1.4. True or false? Yes, way more expensive lenses are obviously better based on actual measurements, however the average subscriber to my channel does not care about those numbers. They just want to know if the lens is good in the real world and how it fairs compared to other lenses in the same price point. I'm just a beginner but for making dance videos that your whole body(including the splits soo both horizonatal and vertical) will be on camera what will do the best the 16mm Sigma or the 30mm Sigma? The kit lens didn't exactly do it for me with my Canon EOS M50. In within a 20 foot range to be specific in distance.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  4 роки тому

      16mm should do it for you, but out of curiosity what is the kit lens you have now? 30mm definitely won't work with only 20 feet of room total. Here is a link to the Sigma 16mm for your Canon: bhpho.to/3c7h4x2

    Very, VERY, nice video. I arrived here randomly, and I just love the way you do your videos. You got a new subscriber. Congratulations.
    I was watching this video with a grain of salt, because I am on that hard spot in the life of a person who loves photography. I bought on Amazon this 30mm by 273€ (on a sale), never opened it (I had plans of buying the new APS-C camera Sony is about to announce since months ago now), and today is the last day for returning it.
    I'm planning to return it, because I find myself on a spot where, I really want to try photography professionally on the future, and if I go for APS-C gear, I might blame myself later, by needing a Fullframe equipement. and... well... I'm not rich. So I'm heavily thinking about going for a Sony A7III, and get it with the Tamrom 28-75, Samyang AF 14 or Sony Vario-Tessar 16-35 ZA (not sure about this one, because the Zoom will make things easier on hard spots for composition) and finally the Sony 85 1.8.
    I'm mostly planning Wide and Travel photo, so I'm thinking about Fullframe, because there are options for this on APS-C too, but most are primes. Zoom options, for what I know, are old already, or with bad quality controls (Sony 10-18mm), or not Wide enough.
    Sorry about the text brick, but I feel agaisnt a wall. Could you help me with your experience to step me into the most right decision?
    It's hard for me thinking into expending around 4500€, but I dont want to expend aound 3000€ on APSC gear (Camera, Sigma 30mm, Sony 18-105G, Samyang 12mm f2 or Laowa 9mm 0D), if the final quality difference is going to be remarcable, and I know Color, ISO, Dynamic range, and even sharpness (specially corner to corner) are better on a Fullframe.
    Thank you, and congratulations for being so didactic.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  5 років тому

      Thanks for the kind words and I hear ya about the gear situation. If I were you, and was planning on doing pro work, I would go with the A7 III (amzn.to/2S03uTm). It has a much larger battery and the sensor is noticeable better than the APS-C cameras. As far as lenses go? That is a hard decision. The Tamron 28-75mm (amzn.to/2S4oR6f) is a great option for the fast constant aperture, but I still would rather have the Sony FE 24-105 G OSS Lens (amzn.to/2CsMJuQ) and a fast prime lens for low light. For the budget oriented user, I would go with the FE 50mm f/1.8 Lens (amzn.to/2CUAB6L) and 85mm f/1.8 Lens (amzn.to/2J5tzfD) and the FE 24-105mm G Lens as the workhorse all in one solution. For wide angle, I would consider the FE 16-35mm f/4 Ziess lens (amzn.to/2CTLJB0). However, the Tamron can also do that job with a faster aperture, but significantly less range. The 24-28mm and 75mm vs 105mm makes a pretty big difference....
      I hope that helps??
      Jay

      Hello, that is a tuff question honestly. If your getting the 16-50mm kit lens, you already have 16mm covered, but obviously not at the same quality as the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 Lens. So I would personally go for the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 Lens, because it's great for filming in front of when the camera is a few feet away and you will be able to get great separation behind you when filming at f/1.4 for example. Just make sure you get a Variable ND filter so you can keep the shutter speed at a video friendly frame rate. For example when recording at 4k 24/p you would want the shutter speed at 1/50sec and the Variable ND filter will help you do that in bright conditions. You can find all the links to gear in the description area... I hope that helps! Jay

Camera information tells me it is employing all 24 megapixels as opposed to using super 35 crop mode. Will have to try it out in real world use to see what, if any, use that is. Maybe that is something you could test out, Jay. Hi Barbara and great question! The short answer is in order to get separation from the background, you will need to have the background far away from you. Yes the 30mm f/1.4 lens would help with separation, but the camera will need to further away from you to get a full body shot as well. So I would try using the 16mm lens at f/1.4 and try your best to fill the scene with your body without to much space, so in other words get as close to the camera as you can while still getting the full body. Then make sure the background is far away. Outside would be the easiest for this for sure ;) I hope that helps and all the best, Jay

    • @Jason_Hermann

      The kit lens is ok, but not as good as a high quality prime lens like the Sigmas. The lens certainly helps, but great lighting and composition also makes a difference.

    why you talk about crop factor since its designed for aps c sensors?

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  5 років тому

      Because the focal range is always in reference to full frame even though the sensor is APS-C. So the effective focal range is not what the lens says. 16mm = 24mm effective and 30mm = 45mm effective as it relates to the 35mm format standard...

    • @PetroshellyShots
      @PetroshellyShots 5 років тому

      this lens is only made for apsc sensors and on ff you will have vignett ..so this makes no sense..but you can compare the field of view, to that off a 24mm on a ff sensor.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  5 років тому

      @@PetroshellyShots Yes, it is confusing. The reason 16mm is effectively 24mm is because of the aps-c sensor crop factor. Any lens smaller than a full frame sensor has a crop factor. In this case it's 1.5x. Therefore 16mm x 1.5 = 24mm. So in other words when using the 16mm on the APS-C sensor A6500, the "effective view" you would get is the same as using a 24mm lens on a full frame camera. If you wanted to capture the same exact frame with the A6500 and a Sony A7 III you would need a 16mm lens on the A6500 and a 24mm lens on the A7 III. That would yield effectively the same image capture corner to corner.

    • @PetroshellyShots
      @PetroshellyShots 5 років тому +1

      @@Jason_Hermannokay i see what ur point is but i think its missleading or irrelevant to any apsc user.. Coz any lens which is made for that apsc Sensorsize has the exact focallength as descriped.. other than a lense which is made for ff.. where u have to calculate the real focallength

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  5 років тому

      @@PetroshellyShots All lenses us the full frame standard, so you must do the calculations for cameras that do not have full frame sensors in order to figure out the effective focal length. It does not matter if it's an aps-C lens or not, the effective calculation still needs to be done. Full frame cameras you do not need to do a calculation for. What it says on the full frame lens is the effective range.
