Meet the all-electric G-Class!
Mercedes has finally unveiled the all-electric G580. The question is, does this all-electric G-Class ruin the heritage of this world-renowned off-roader?
For starters, let’s check out the design. Thankfully, the biggest changes are under the skin, so this all-new G retains its predecessor's classic boxy shape. Up front, there’s an updated grille design, coupled with an updated lower bumper. You still get trim that runs across the side of the car, although in this electric edition it comes with a little blue stripe included! Around the back, there’s an updated rear bumper, and on the back door, what once held a spare wheel now holds the charging cables!
Step inside and the G580 is just as stylish and well-built as those that came before it. There are soft-touch, high-quality materials throughout, and the seats are super comfortable. The 580 comes with a new steering wheel, updated infotainment and digital dial screens, along with a number of other updates in the centre console and across the dash.
When it comes to performance, there are a number of options to run through. For those not wanting to go fully electric, there’s a 3-litre diesel and a 3-litre straight-six turbo petrol, and these deliver 367hp and 449hp respectively. Meanwhile, the AMG G63 delivers 585hp, and all cars are equipped with a 9-speed automatic gearbox.
As for the G580, it comes with an incredible four electric motors, and these combine to produce 587hp and an eye-watering 1,164Nm! So there’s loads of power, but because it weighs over 3 tonnes, it still takes 4.7 seconds to hit 60mph.
The entry-level diesel G-Class starts at £136,000, the all-electric G580 starts at around £160,000, and the most powerful AMG G63 costs around £185,000. With that in mind, should you choose the all-electric G580 over the G63?! You’ll need to stick with Mat and see for yourself!

Turning the g wagon electric just guarantees the most off-roading this car will ever see is when the driver accidentally drives over a curb
99% of all G wagons are driven in city centres anyways, so might as well make it electric lol
That was always the case.
I mean yes, 95% of owners will just drive it in the city like it has always been the case with the G-Wagon in the past decade or so, but in terms of off-roading the electric G-Wagon is just as capable as the ICE version.
No EV is off-road capable, it's just way too have that's it, you may be ok on dry ground but sand and mud will swallow it.
Rivian R1s owner here- my Rivian plows through deep soft beach sand with authority. I haven’t even had to air down the tires and the sand was very soft where even lifted ICE trucks were getting buried and had to be rescued. I expect the electric G Wagon to also be very good off road.
450Kg payload??.....so 5 people weighing in at 90kg each??already at max payload before luggage😂😂😂Lets just stick to the ICE, my 2cents!
Afaik, in the EU the dry weight already includes a 75kg driver, so 4 additional people at 90kg, +15kg extra for a 90kg driver, so another 75kg for luggage.
Is he said white ?😂
3085 + 450 = 3535 kg , will you need a c1 licence to drive this?

You guys in the UK are lucky for the lack of tax on vehicles.
Here's the prices for the new G-models in Finland:
-G 580: 152 500 € (including VAT) + car tax: 0 € = 152 500 €
-G 63: 217 000 € (including VAT) + car tax 186 053 € = 403 053 €

G-Wagons hold their value very well. They either go up in price on the used market or average a depreciation rate around 2% or less. Please refrain from making ignorant tik tok car knowledge comments
@@SM-1010 You deserve everything your dealer techs do to you. 100000 Teslas are hitting the market because no one wanted to rent one.
@@billdurham8477 I have no doubt that generic EVs like Tesla depreciate. OP’s original claim was a gross and unambiguous assessment (Didn’t specify the gas or EV g wagon) of depreciation for this segment of Mercedes when the literal numbers back up my claim. Deprecation being assessed for the EV g wagon can’t be done as the cars are not on the roads yet. It is possible it could hold value well likes its gas counterpart because it has the G wagon persona with great features. But it’s also possible it could depreciate hard due to the fact it is just an EV. It simply cannot be assessed yet.
My dealer techs are fine, my MB and Audi reps take good care of me.
@@SM-1010 Yes, G-Wagons hold their value very well. G-Wagons with V-8 engines that is.
I've recently seen a video of a German dude who wanted to sell his 2-year old Porsche Taycan GTS in exchange for a new car and none of the car dealers would even accept the E-Taycan as a trade-in. Gwagon Drivers Rev their cars at lights and drive like no one’s around. What made Mercedes think those people would want to go electric
Residents of Beverly Hills and Chinese rich kids are the main target audience I assume
The combustion engine G-class still exists, so what is the problem? There will be a lot of interest in the electric G class in China.
You're talking about G63 drivers, there are also normal G-Wagons that don't have engine revers as owners.
Rather have a new model 3 performance and spend the rest on cocaine 🤷
Because those same people asked for it? I know plenty of G wagon owners and most of them have a 2nd car for driving around because of the horrible fuel mileage
Virtue signalling in a 3.5 ton tank that costs £160k is a contradiction in terms.
EV is very much a luxury - not a virtue signal. Not having go to the gas station and breathe benzene like a dirty peasant, having the wonderful instant torque at 0 RPM, not having to take it in for maintenance, and always having a "full tank" every morning is the definition of luxury.

I am kind of in a spin here, listening to ALL of the variables, modes, technology and bells and whistles. An old German father figure of mine handed down his extensive knowledge of 4x4's to me. Land Rover from the 90's onwards were not to be entrusted with traversing Africa's vast plains anymore due to electronic glitches, Toyota stood out in my friend's view, being a 100% Hilux fan until his passing. But, he mentioned the Gelande wagen with a very special reverence. Those G-wagons were those robust fuss free masterpieces from the 80's I think. Plain, box like, solid and everlasting with analogue controls, mechanical swithgear, transfer case, hi/low range, locking diffs but reliability and excellence without a competitor in sight. The concept presented here reminds me of the new mini, the new beetle, Fiat 500, Mustang etc etc. With the mini particularly for me, my comment was constant: Its not a Mini. I have the same sense here. The G-wagon was intended to be the German answer to Jeep and Land Rover. It did excellently relying on driver skill & knowledge without complication or too much assistance digitally. I also think that the G63 AMG also misses the point. its not a road racer. This is an offroad vehicle. I have a fantasy of designing a car that is absolutely basic, that takes you from A-B with great fuel efficency, reasonable comfort, that exemplifies the singularity of personal transport. Reliable, efficient, decent performance for longer distances and maybe air conditioning. No Turbos please. i want to name it "Car". Thats it. Electrical? No. Toyotas Hydrogen/Oxygen machine? Possibly. So much is really an indulgence. To each his own, I guess hey?

Saying it went from a Cd for a 2-story to a 1-story is completely meaningless. A simple cube or rectangle both have a Cd close to 1.0
Cd is a unitless value that you multiply by the frontal area to get a real value you can compare between vehicles or buildings.
I like how they kept the classic look and at the same time smoothed it out a bit. It looks really great.
They ruined the G-Wagen when they made them all prissy AMGs and charged a fortune rather than proper workhorses like the old 240Ds and 280Es.
There is only one G-Wagen and that’s the good old 460. With steel bumpers and skinny wheels.
If you want a work horse buy an Unimog. That's the definition of a offroad workhorse :P
The G-Wagon added a lot of luxury and the large majority won't ever use it to offroad (maybe after a couple years on the used market), but I'm happy they keep it a very capable offroader just for the sake of it. The change to luxury was mostly because of the market. People bought it as a luxury item and a status symbol, so Mercedes just followed the market.
blah blah bullshit, they made something unique and amazing out of an ordinary off roader. And the sale numbers just show how good it is
@@Verybadbikerlost

Let's be honest, the type of people who buy Gwagon neither care about the environment nor poor people. The electric version does have benefits for some of these people. And the combustion versions are still avaliable.
No one is marketing this as an eco car. It's not eco-friendly in any way - economical nor ecological
@@Cyrribrae Yeah, but in a lot of countries people get subsidized or pay less to no (road)taxes if they buy a electric vehicle in order to incentivise people to go 'eco-friendly'
They just blatantly ignored the fact most people being able to buy electric had money enough to begin with or had a lease from their work and the ecological and downsides of electric cars like mining resources for batteries, charging with grey energy and the need for a complete overhaul of the electrical network if everyone would go electric.
Luckily they're realizing now that it's not really working out that way in the long term and you see changes happening.
@@scratastic1 your opinion is obvious. I hold a different one. I don't really care if people can afford an electric vehicle. I want more people in them, rather than in new combustion vehicles. You know who has the money to buy new combustion vehicles, rather than keeping their old cars? People who have money. People I'd rather spent that money on non-combustion cars.
Even work leases are more likely to be non-combustion if there are good incentives. Again. That's a good thing.
The ecological impacts of EV mining are nowhere near as bad as fossil fuel extraction. Nor oil refining. Nor ice vehicles use. It's not even close. And the idea that the grid can't handle electric vehicles is insane. We're not all switching tomorrow. If we can't upgrade the grid at all, we'll be screwed even without EVs.
