Yes. I've tried them "all". I did an earlier Surface Pro (liked it but bought a model with very little RAM so it got slow), went on to a Galaxy Tab (liked it but was a bit janky), went on to an iPad pro (liked it but other than consuming videos and browsing I didn't really get any proper work done it). Now I'm going back to Surface with the new OLED Surface Pro running ARM. Will it be as powerful as the iPad pro (no), will the design and screen be as good (no), but will I be more productive (yes). iPadOS is holding iPad pro back.
I'm guessing the issue with the keyboard not allowing further tilting is because the weight. In a laptop, the guts are all the base. When you have an iPad with keyboard, the guts are in the top half. It would topple over if you put it further back.
@@Adowraththe only way of doing that is literally having the keyboard weigh more than the iPad. Half of the reason why this iPad is much thinner and lighter is because so many people complained about how bulky and heavy it was with the Magic Keyboard. I could see maybe a different hinge design allowing for more degrees of motion (I would’ve preferred if you could “bring it towards you” like you can with the Surface Laptop Studio), but to do the 360° of rotation as shown off would require changes that no one’s really asking for. If you need it flat, just take it off.
well for digital artists this with the nano texture its a wet dream come true, Pro use ! for the rest of us its like why is it so expensive ? i have 2 regular 2021 ipads and they are great for normal people! they are great.
@@cheezy2455 The accuracy and quality of the pencil are exceptionally good. But the design of the Apple pencil with all the double tapping and squeezing, that stuff is incredibly inefficient. That's why Wacom and all the companies that make tools for professionals have physical buttons on their stylus. But when Apple has to choose between functionality and style, Apple chooses style every time. And so the Apple Pencil, the very first one was a terrible design. And with each iteration, they add useful features to it, but the way you interact with those features is always terrible.
I use my iPad every other day for a few hours. I have a 2018 ipad pro with all the accessory’s, and its been nice. I use it for note taking, art, and content consumption, I also just like doing my school work more on here more. I bought it used for about $340 with 256GB of storage. With the apple pencil and magic keyboard I bought (also used) its about $445. I still use a 2016 iphone se because I dont need a new phone I got it at the max storage witch is 128GB and it has been great on ios 15. If your going to use an older ios device its best to have somthing newer on your apple id to download apps on. Ios 15 is starting to lose support from some apps, but you can still download older versions of those app, you just need to have downloaded it before, I download and delete apps on my ipad to then download an older version of the app on my iphone. I dont have to do this with many apps now, but in the future I will. When I upgrade my iphone in a few years I wanna get an iphone 13 mini, but before I get that Im saving up for an m1 macbook air with 16GB of ram, and 512GB of storage. My best computer right now is an old windows desktop with an i5 16gb of ram, 512gb of Hard drive storage, and integrated graphics. Its fine for quick things I need a full computer for, but its slow, and I don’t like ant version of windows over 7. Im not downgrading to windows 7 because of how annoying it would be to use it in 2024.
Loved how he would have to unplug what ever was that he was demonstrating at that point in comparison to the iPad. Other devices seem to be tethered all the time where as my MacBook Pro runs on batteries all weekend long.
6:00 Really don't understand why Apple doesn't just make the whole iPad the thickness of the camera bump and then have just amazing battery life with the extra space.
I feel like there almost has to be some reason like "with the extra space there it still isn't enough for a better battery" or something so they would rather shave it off anyways & use the thinness for marketing purposes. I know most anyone would rather it just have better battery life than thinness but marketability wins over
I used to be a sucker for thinness in phones and tablets. I fell for the marketing, I thought wow, so thin. But really, phones and tablets have become so thin that they're cumbersome to hold. Battery life all the way over having the thinnest possible device.
Correction at 6:41, the USB-C port is Thunderbolt 3 / USB 4 compliant. Thunderbolt 4 certification requires support for at least 2 external monitors through the USB-C port while the M4 chip only supports a single external monitor. It's the same as the M1 and M2 iPads.
@@UnsettlingDwarf as an apple user and a big fan it's my take on all Apple products. Great overall, excel in details, but have so many stupid things if you look closely. What I love about my iPad (2020 11 inch) is that it still performs pretty well in 2024. It’s like a portable smart TV with a great display that’s big enough to enjoy content while being small enough to comfortably travel with.
I'm happy for you. Now wait a few more years until you get the dreaded 'This app requires an update' message, followed by the App store saying 'This update requires a later version of iOS', followed by iOS Update saying 'Your iPad is already running the latest available version' - eg you're boned. As was my beloved 8 year old iPad mini, now languishing in a landfill because it turned into a LITERAL BRICK overnight last year.
Display is how they got me, saw the dual layer OLED and ordered since I have an OLED everything (but my MacBook) and its nuts genuinely so incredible. No doubt it is the best display currently available, my LG OLED which I love doesn’t come close to it’s brightness
@p5rsona i find that way more realistic than a tech review done by a professional. Maybe if she had more screen time she could’ve said more about the device
Yeah, that was my first thought as well. This iPad basically confirms that. My hope is that they also make it touchscreen, since the technology is already there.
@@ashtonbeca the day they make macbook have a touchscreen is the day they kill the iPad. Coz no way in hell they'll make it touchscreen and not be able to have the screen detachable or go the Lenovo Yoga way oh wait THAT'S A FRICKING IPAD At some point Apple will merge these two product line ups but it'll be a LOOOOOOOOOOONG way from now like may be 10 years from now. Because that's when I think Apple silicon just plateau in terms of performance and people will lose all incentive to upgrade
It's only Maria that they brought in who make that mistake and she was just a guest to draw and give her impressions. She doesn't need to know everything about ipads
the magic keyboard hinge is limited because if it went further back, it would tip over more easily because unlike with a laptop, the weight is mostly in the screen so pushing it too far back means the center of gravity is past the hinge and it tips over. i haven’t personally tested this with the new magic keyboard but i daily drive the old one and that thing is so well balanced. i’m actually surprised they were able to get the new one straight and not angled forward like the old one. i also really like the fact that it doesn’t fold over because i don’t want to be putting my keyboard and glass trackpad on whatever surface i put it down on. i have a dbrand skin on the ipad itself to protect against scratches and i’d rather put that on the table than the keyboard side. just personal preference though, i like it you don’t
I was just about to mention this. I thought the hovering iPad thing was dumb until I realized it allows the keyboard to not add even more weight to the setup. The only other solutions (that I can think of) are doing Microsoft Surface style kickstand which would kill lap use, or adding weights or battery to the keyboard. Both solutions probably add more weight and thickness, I definitely don’t want more weight and thickness, especially on the 12.9. I agree with every review since the first iPad Pro, amazing tablet, held back by software. But it checks all the right boxes for me and my business, so I like it.
I have an A12 iPad Pro and it was pretty amazing back then. I don't have a comprehensive Apple ecosystem (my last Apple product before is the 6th Gen iPod Touch) but still using it to this date. I'm very impressed with it still running + Pencil 2.
and a lot of things havent been upgraded in its successor models, like the speak, camera, mic and until now the pen. I'd even wager that for more than 2/3 of its users the performance hasnt noticily increased either.
I’m watching this from a 2018 11” iPad Pro. I use mine for everything from 3D sculpting to content consumption. Planning on upgrading to this when I can, have kept putting it off waiting for the next jump that wasn’t pen hover lmao
Only features making me want to jump from the 2018 iPad Pro are AAA gaming ports that require M-series chips, and the proper external monitor support (that also require M-series chips).
Same deal for me, I'm also on an 11" 2018 pro and would like to upgrade to the M4 13" this year or next if possible. The 11" 2018 has never let me down or shown even a hint of a limitation, but that screen and the new pen features have me intrigued. And I need the 13" because my eyes have aged since I bought the 11, lol
I had a 2018 pro, it suffers from awful blacks and back light bleed (look at a black screen in a dark room and the iPad will light the room up) this new screen is amazing, I wish LG used this tech for their TVs ❤
ARTIST TAKE: yes, it's very expensive. no, i don't think it's a bad value. the "pro" in the name used to be just marketing but honestly these new ones are genuinely professional level devices, prepare to pay professional prices (honestly reasonable considering the competition). even Linus said so, you simply can't get that display anywhere else. if you start looking at pen displays, they are similarly priced WITHOUT the computer, or 120hz, or OLED. I get why people are critical and compare these to macbooks or other laptops, because cost, but it's a different tool with a completely different job. they're making very clear with the marketing this is an artist's tool, with the most advanced stylus i know of, and an insane display. you really cannot find everything it offers together, anywhere else. (literally it doesn't exist) TLDR; this isn't a device for the average person, or even hobbyist artists, get the iPad air or a Galaxy Tab. if u need a laptop, get a laptop. this isn't a laptop and shouldn't be compared to one.

Your friend knows his stuff, the black will by inky jet black and white will burn his retinas 😂 The screen itself for media consumption is a top notch for hdr movies, colorful anime and 11” will be perfect for reading manga. I had 12.9 m1 but for multimedia it was too bulky / tall and only really used it with Magic Keyboard. Decided to sell it and got instead MBP 14 m1 and waited for OLED iPP 11”. This was it I also got it for consuming multimedia.
@@elinavance3476 yeah iPad mini just with tandem OLED screen would be nice. It doesn’t even need other Pro features. I compared Samsung S8+ and S9+ and IPP 12.9 M1 in HDR movies and S9+ was better, but not by much. Meanwhile S8+ was not bright enough and even blacks looked better on iPP 12.9 vs S8+. So OLED vs much brighter MiniLED with high amount of dimming zones is not an obvious thing.
I have a 2017 12.9" iPad, so the 11" M4 is a huge boost. This is important for the responsiveness of the pencil, which I use constantly at work. Also, for 3D work, it's nicer, and TB4 is superior to lightning. I actually love the new Pencil Pro, the squeeze and double-tap is huge. If you need this iPad, you'll know it. For everyone else, get a cheaper one unless you're made of money.
The double tap has been here for a couple of years now though. As a 12.9" M1 iPad owner I don't really see any significant reasons to upgrade buy I agree it's worth it for those who're switching from A chip models. The question is, if it isn't a better value to go for M1/M2 models instead.
@@XT64here, the price difference between them is marginal. The Apple Store sold me the M2 by accident and it was $1300 instead of $1400. I also enjoy the new Apple Pencil but you’re right. If you can find a cheaper iPad then go for it. Wasn’t worth it for me
@@XT64m4 would be a better value when it offers more longevity for the money spent. I always spring for the top of the line every 3-4 years and only barely notice performance drop around that time frame, but enjoy the new bells and whistles.

It just fills a spot in my day to day when I get home at night and sit in my living room chair - it's a habit now and it is a joy to use, quite frankly. I also have the new M4 iMac and the iPhone 15 plus - they each fill a need and I am happy to be able to afford to enjoy them.
I have the 12.9" iPad Pro from 2018 and as a digital artist it's a fantastic device, I use it for Procreate, general content consumption and some mobile games with Apple Arcade. It hasn't slowed down at all, unlike some Android tablets I had in the past and even its battery still holds up, so I don't really need to upgrade yet, as much as the new screen and Apple Pencil Pro might tempt me. Otherwise, as a general media consumption device, any old android device would suffice.
I was reading an opinion article on why reviewers always seem dissatisfied with the iPad Pro while users mostly seem to love it. The gist of what they wanted to say was that reviewers are used to juggling between devices so they already know what to achieve and how to achieve it smoothly on, say, a PC or a Mac. They feel hamstrung when they are unable to do the same on the iPad. But the typical iPad user lives within the restrictions of what the iPad Pro allows and can, depending on who they are, maximize the effectiveness within the set limitations.

@@Ok-kf8xg Kickstands are widely ineffective except at a flat surface like a desk & generally lack the "niceness" that comes with Apple products. There are plenty, and by plenty I mean too many aftermarket / 3rd party cases for iPads that also do the exact same thing the Magic Keyboard does. If someone wants to extend it further they can just buy one of those with a kickstand - one of those will also be a hell of a lot cheaper too. Apple made a choice, if you don't like it, don't buy it. No one is forcing anyone to buy this iPad or the magic keyboard.
@@Ok-kf8xg Ehh... Kickstands aren't great let's be honest. Try using a kickstand on a lap. It's a pain (and to be clear I own both a surface pro and an iPad pro 11 inch with a logitech kickstand/keyboard case). I've messed around with, but do not own, the magic keyboard, and yeah, in terms of lap usability, it's far better than the alternative, at least in my opinion. Tabletop is slightly better on kickstand, but not by that much. I feel Linus likes to harp on the negatives a bit much with apple stuff sometimes. Don't get me wrong, it's really expensive, 100%. But the lack of a kickstand ain't the major problem here.
I'm also still using the 2018 iPad Pro 11 inch and it's still blazing through day to day tasks. Battery Life could be better but using Goodnotes in Airplane mode I can get around 8 - 9 hours of nonstop writing and looking at scripts which is totally fine.
I tried really hard to tell some of my friends to either not upgrade or buy one of the older models refurbished cuz all the M1 stuff is just so good still. It’s a waste unless you really need something that is being added to the newer devices like a video encoder or something else specific to M3 or M4 …. My m1 ipad pro is still killing it with no signs stopping... it mostly does netflix and D+ and some kitchen work... it did survive fall from the car going onto the interstate at 45mph with a spec case
the fun thing with the iPad Pro is that they're so ridiculously over-spec'd that a six-year-old model will still work perfectly for most use cases (this means that you won't need to upgrade for another few years unless Apple seriously beefs up iPadOS)
@@waytoobiased It was really surprising to me they put started putting the M1+ into the iPad for this reason! for me on an old Intel Macbook I can't wait to get over to either a used M1 Pro 2021 or maybe an M3 Air when the back to school event starts at Apple, but there's still no reason in my mind for any current iPad users to jump for this upgrade unless they're professional illustrators that would benefit greatly from the new pencil pro, or for for me to get such a beefy iPad while it's stuck on the portable-only iPadOS either. Not sure if that's an issue they want to fix though, since they seem to have the iPad market carved out specifically for creatives that need a pencil/don't need full desktop suite apps, and then the more expensive and touchscreen-less MacBooks are specifically for professionals and creatives that need the full desktop suite of apps and MacOS like audio engineers, designers, programmers, etc. Whatever gets Apple the most money in the end, I guess!
As a perfectionist researcher, kind of geek person I bought the air and a new iPad Pro - because I wanted a little bit larger size than my iPad Pro 11 from 2018. After benchmarking I literally had my jaw hit the floor because they were almost identical! But you know what I kept the pro and I’m gonna tell you why. First off the air gets very hot when charging. Heat when charging equals short life span. Plus and I know a lot of people don’t do this, I use it to read Kindle books on and the refresh rate did actually hurt my eyes on the air. But otherwise almost freaking identical. I’m also an artist and use Procreate and I don’t know what all the fluff people are talking about with the experience being poor - it was fine for me But ultimately even with the higher price of the pro - I know I’ve got something that’s gonna last for quite a few years and The lightness of the pad for me is key because I have it on my lap for drawing often, and I also have an arm that gets sore very quickly if I’m trying to hold the other ones. The negative factors for the pad for me are the speakers just aren’t as good as the iPad Pro from a few years Ago, and the super saturated contrast is not changeable! There are colour profiles, but you can’t shift your black white balance like you can on pretty much any cheap android or Windows device. That is stupidly annoying. That should be base level functionality But ultimately, I know have a tablet that I can use as a computer with my external touchpad and keyboard, and also I get a bit of a longer daily battery life than the air.
I’m an iPad fan, currently my third one (iPad original, iPad Air 2 and iPad pro 12,9 M1…. Awesome. The only thing that would make it perfect is the possibility of running macOS for some destop apps like Musescore Studio
The hinge doesn’t work like that because of weight, Linus. iPad has the weight in the top and will fall over backward with a “conventional” hinge. Laptops have the weight in the bottom, and don’t have this limitation.
@@TalesOfWarExactly! Therefore the new pencil needs to be backwards compatible. Doesn’t matter if the coils for wireless charging are not in the right spot!
I understand that they need to have a different hinge for balancing purposes but to be able to lay it down flat should be an easy with with just a second hinge at the base
I use the m1 iPad Pro 11” and it have been by far my favourite Apple product ever. I use it to basically everything, taking notes on work, play games, watch UA-cam and movies, reading and even some editing from time to time. This one it’s ofc something that I want, but the m1 is still super fast. I actually think iPads are reasonably priced as well. High end phones is higher price, but you get a lot more from an iPad, now you even get the best display ever.
I mean yea compared to an iPhone or Samsung phone they really are a steal with all the work you can do and what you get. iPhones/S24 ultra being $1000-1500 is completely insane for them they should be like $800 max price not starting out 😂 I do think they are over priced especially now with like a 200-300 price hike over the last generation. But I had my M1 iPad Pro since near launch and it was great the whole time for work on graphic design and photo editing or note taking and outlining video projects. So like I’m sure the new one will be great for many years to come if you have the money but like I wouldn’t say upgrading is super worth it unless you having something before the M1 series. Edit: also for work stuff the M1 iPad Pro and M1 MacBook Pro paid for themself and was so faster than my old MacBook as well as my previous editing Pc in terms of speed and productivity
Well, I got myself one of these. They finally broke me. I am VERY annoyed it is locked to a toy-OS, but I have had so many tablet-style drawing-capable machines which have all sucked to the point I have stopped using them. Especially my Wacom one, ironically. I just want something that functions. If I can't draw on the computer I carry with me, it's useless. So, even with the new Surface lineup on the horizon I still opted for this for that screen, the general snapyness and polish as well as not needing to deal with the Windows clunk every time I want to doodle on the train. MacOS, or even better, the capacity to run MacOS-apps inside iPadOS would be a massive upgrade though, instantly leaving any and all competing devices in the dust.
You say you want MacOS on this. I don't think you do, not really. The clunk you describe in Windows is what you'll get with MacOS on the iPad. It isn't designed for touch, the whole OS would need an entirely new UI for everything. Remember Windows 8 and how much that sucked because of that?
@@TalesOfWar being able to open a real tool and have it be a tad clunky is far superior to not being able to open it at all. Any time, any place. Always. Windows on touch can be finicky, yes, but add a trackpad or pen, and it's fine. Anywhere near as smooth as something built for touch? No. Of course not. But what does that matter when I can't edit my 3D print files at my printers? Those kinds of scenarios are what annoys me. When my 2013 Surface can get a job done easily, and an iPad Pro simply can't due to being neutered in software despite being a far more powerful machine. Opening a desktop app on an iPad doesn't need to function differently from the desktop version to be usable. The Surface line has proven that viable, over a decade ago. Make iPadOS and MacOS apps cross-compatible and open the desktop apps as is, and we'd be good.
Yeah for anything else it is. But at that point, buy a macbook. Id dint force u to buy the ipad. Whoever buys it with a idea in mind, buy it cuz they wanna sit in their sofa/bed while play some crazy ass demanding games. And wanna be able to edit withput worrying to much about battery and opening the ipad instantly (which laptops take a bit longer to do, cuz Laptops are made to be shut down when not used, while ipad having the larger battery capacity dont need to be shut down). And sometimes u just wanna play games and edit video while shitting in the bathroom😔
@@Hostile_Design Your compromise for having crappy touch support on a Windows system is to make it into a laptop. And this is why so many developers for Windows don't bother making good touch interfaces, because they know they'll just use it as a laptop in those situations. This is why Apple didn't make hybrid devices, they made the iPad and Mac distinct. iPad is designed for touch first, everything else is extra, Mac is made for keyboard and mouse/trackpad, everything else is extra. When you combine the two you get something that isn't really all that great for either unless it's an entirely different UI in each mode to make the most of the input paradigm. Developers are lazy, they'll do the least amount of work to get their thing working. If they're not incentivised to do more, they won't. Some will, but the vast majority won't and especially not the ones who make the "real tools", whatever that even means. Adobe can't even make a good UI for keyboard and mouse/trackpad and they've been doing it for around 40 years.
I was a hater and then my Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 died and I got an 11 inch Air with the M2 along with a pencil and keyboard and it’s been fantastic. I was a fan of the smaller surface devices and this has taken their place.
9:56 Procreate artist here. Tapping the pencil to switch between the pencil and eraser is not a new feature. I've been able to do that since the day I bought my M1 iPad Pro a few years ago. Useful feature, yes. But not new, and definitely not exclusive to the new pencil.
U lnow the S9 Ultra is like way older. The Ipad already demolished the S24U which has the better chip. I rlly would hate Samsung tablets if in their new one (if there is gonna be a new one) they dont use that huge ass space to put more ram instead of the same amount of fkin ram in a phone. Like they have even more space than the Ipad pro. Might as well put a PC chip, Good GPU and like 16Gb of ram.
Not many people are talking about just how accurate and beautiful the Pro’s screen really is. It’s reason enough to consider it for the screen alone. Thanks for covering it in more detail, Linus!
As an iPad Pro 2018 owner, I can confidently say that it is one of the most timeless pieces of technology I have ever had. The performance, battery and design have remained modern even six years later.
when it comes to the rear camera I would use it for site survey's and taking pictures of server rooms/closets. It was plenty fine for that. Things like that are also why it still has lidar and room mapping. Lots of that is way better on a big screen than a phone.
I think the hating on the hinge's limited range is a bit excessive. If the hinge didn't lock out at 90 degrees, it would just always fall over since the iPad is way heavier than the keyboard...
One MASSIVELY important part about the IPad Pro lineup is the fact that they have a laminated display and every other iPad has a stacked display. This means that when writing with the pen on the Pro, the tip has no noticeable distance to the line you’re drawing, when on all other models, there is a noticeable gap - which REALLY throws you off when writing or drawing
It's funny, that right in the introduction Linus says "I'd either use my phone, or my laptop." I remember the launch of the original, first generation iPad, the first one ever. And many press outlets - including national TV - reported on the lines of people waiting in front of apple stores. Many even asked the waiting why they are buying the iPad, and what they are going to use it for. And nobody had a real answer to that question. Most just repeated the "to increase my productivy" - basically parrotting apple's official talking point, but nobody could explain how and why that would make them more productive. Some few openly admitted they had no idea what they were gonna do with it. Almost 15 years later, we still don't know what tablets are for... a larger screen for your mobile apps? an ersatz-laptop for people who can't type? A handful of commercial use-cases have emerged - like restaurants using them as digital menu cards, or hairdresser taking a picture of you, and showing you different haircuts on your actual face - stuff like that. There are quite a few such niche applications where it's genuinely useful. But as a product category, the tablet still has no identifying purpose. When somebody owns a phone and a laptop - you probably have a pretty good idea, what they might do with that. But when somebody owns a tablet, it still always begs the question: "and what do you actually do with that?". (Most common answer seems to be: "baby-sitter - to let the kids watch peppa pig or something")
@@sigmachad96 I think there's a huge advantage though to getting an actual laptop that does run full desktop software, instead of phone apps. Getting an ersatz-laptop that's locked-in to a mobile app store at the same price you could also get a simple real laptop... 🤷 I already have a phone for those apps.
I use it cuz the goofy ass app ecosystem means a lot of companies make “lite” versions of their desktop software for a fraction of the price. Like, I don’t need to pay fucking 200 dollars for Finaldraft when it’s 60 bucks (mostly) fully featured on the app store. DAWs are cheaper too
From what I've seen it used for professionally: graphic artists - which is funny you left out since they showed it in the video, music and audio production, 2nd display/on the road programming, HMI display for factories (don't need a pro for this though),. management, great tool for meetings. The problem is that you have to find those highly specific apps. I worked as a CTO for a company and actively tracked down apps which would help me and it greatly increased my productivity, mostly by finding apps that removed all the labourous work, such as note taking during meetings, quickly creating presentations etc. It's quite disingenious to rant on something you haven't really tried or researched. "...we still don't know what tablets are for", really?
@@85Portar Agreed. Graphics artists is a good usecase. But graphics tablets did exist long before that - (even if the older versions didn't have screens) - so that's nothing new the tablet as a device brought to the table. And for a professional, there's actually a benefit to having the graphics tablet be an accessory to the PC rather than a standalone device - as for any workflow that involves desktop apps as well, you don't have to move files back and forth.
I got a refurbished ipad on amazon for like 180 dollars to read sheet music off of and like... it's not new or shiny but it does everything i'll need for a while, apple can be pretty good value if you shop refurbished or used
Literally the only channel that talks about the display in such detail. I already watched dozens of reviews, but this is the only channel that made clear how good this display actually is.
I kind of want one after watching this. The iPad has long been an iPhone hooked up to a great touch screen and a faster-than-necessary processor, and at this point people basically know what they're getting. But that screen sounds incredible and if you have the money to spend and understand the device's limitations, it sounds pretty great.
I think a lot of people miss the market of students who are children of middle to upper middle class families who use the ipad pros for their screen sizes to take notes. The screen size alone is the reason why I bought it so that I can take notes, and the amazing battery life is a plus, too.
you dont need a pro for doing the most basic tasks, this is more for people who work with more intensive apps and want to bring something portable as well
but u don't need a M4 iPad Pro to take notes. my M1 Pro does it well too. I am waiting for wwdc to see if they will add a better file manager to ipadOS18.
@KimGuanGoh_kiMz I used to have the M1, but the battery is abysmal now, and onenote makes it get so hot I actually got burnt from holding my hand to the screen too long while writing.
I LOVE my new iPad Pro! I’m a 3D character and asset designer for games, and I’ve been using this to work close to my family. I used to be glued at my desk, but now I can work almost anywhere I want. I use Easy Canvas to stream my desktop to my iPad. Things I wish it had/supported: 1) Better key bind customization. I want to be able to squeeze the pen to right click. I use right click to navigate in ZBrush. 2) Razer Synapse. I WANT Razer Synapse on my damn iPad! I use a Razer Tartarus Pro for every part of my workflow, so I feel extremely sluggish when working on my iPad because I can’t use any of my hot keys.
My 13" M1 iPad Pro is still more than adequate. That being said, that OLED display is _NICE_. I'm going to pick up the 11" in the next update. Hopefully by then we've had a couple WWDCs to bring the software up to par. I'm also over the 13" size. I ended up going from an old 16" Intel MBP down to the 14" M3 Max, so I basically need my next iPad for content consumption, casually editing photos, and drawing. I just wish they would offer a standard OLED (not dual layer) on the iPad Air eventually, even if they have to bump up the price by $100. I'd much rather spend $699 on an OLED iPad Air than $999 on an iPad Pro that is way faster than I would ever need from a tablet. But I think Apple knows the display is what upsells people. I think the iPad Air might move to Mini LED next year.
I really wish that they made it a couple milimeters thicker. Not only could you get much more battery, but you could do without the camera bump. I hate it when things don't lie flat. It would also be nice to have like, a second usbc port? Plus everything Linus said about their stupid keyboard hinge. But even as somebody who doesn't particularly like apple products, looking at those screen stats, and the capabilities of a low end desktop in a low profile tablet like that, and listening to the audio? That's pretty incredible. Gotta respect the engineering involved, no matter how much contempt you have for the company.
@@ShortCircuit I was hoping asus would release a new model this year (maybe with a Radeon GPU), but seems like they are switching over to their ProArt Series for the X13 😔 Not sure if the 2023 Flow x13 is worth it, 4070 seems like a waste with that TDP but the 4060 model lacks 32GB Ram options & no 2TB (or rather 2280) M.2 options from the factory over all is a bummer too. Hoping the ProArt with new AMD chips will rectify that & maybe make the old flow obsolete, but any thoughts on the current situation? (TBH framework should get into the 2-in-1 game~)
Uhhh I think peoples issue with the pencil was not that the new pencil wouldn’t work with the old iPads. It the fact that none of the older pencils will work with the new iPad.
It makes sense for some features to only be available on the new iPad with the new pencil. But I really don’t like that the 2nd gen Apple Pencil won’t work with any of the new iPad pros so you are forced to buy the pro pencil. Or if you have an old iPad you have to either buy a new iPad or you can’t use the pro pencil. Like having to sell or not use the 2nd gen pencil you already own even if you don’t want the pro sucks that you are forced to buy the new one
The ipad release is very frustrating to me each year, it's so close to being an actual laptop replacement but they just really don't want it to be and lock the software down (incl. the bootloader)
You know how windows lets you install Linux as an app? I would love if iPad did that, or allowed dual booting. I feel like they'd do it in a hardbeat if it didn't mean destroying an entire product line overnight.
For me the main differences between the M1 12.9 1 TB and the M4 13 1 TB are: 1. The screen. So bright and clear and no glow around light objects when watching in a darker room. 2. The speed: I do a lot of 3D design in Shapr3D and the M4 is so much more fluent. 3. The weight: holding it for hours in my left hand on my lap designing makes a big difference . 4. The pencil: hover, squeeze and the haptic feedback. 5. The camera on the long side: no more weird video calls where you have to look to the side
You were really making me want this untill you reminded me that Apple will never make an all in one device to canabilize Macbook sales. The hypocritical greed of Steve Jobs lives beyond even the grave.
I have an iPad and use it instead of my laptop now when traveling or just commuting. I like to write and draw on my Ipad, but sometimes I need to type up something too. so its perfect for my needs due to it's versatility.

Question: Is the terrible camera quality for these iPads normal? I’m asking because I just got the Pro 11 inch version and the front and back camera quality is absolutely mediocre. So grainy and muted, the pictures I’ve taken as tests have all looked completely dead. Is this just the new deal with the new iPads’ cameras, or is it just mine? Please let me know!!!
Yes it’s an iPad issue. I think it’s not just about the camera lenses, but the post processing going on. They didnt optimise as well as the iPhone because the camera on the iPad is meant to be functional at best.
@@nuclearwinter6231 I definitely agree, I feel that the iPad’s camera is meant to be just “useable,” not astounding, lol. I appreciate your reply 👍!

I really want to buy it but: 1. soft touch still exists on the keyboard (I love the aluminum though) 2. audio quality is worse 3. Took away wide angle camera 4. Hinge limit is too restrictive 5. Hardly an upgrade from the M1/M2 iPad Pros minus the aluminum keyboard and larger trackpad.
I use my iPad to read comics, draw, and use the Sidecar feature with my laptop, all the best use cases for an iPad. So I guess this would be a pretty good upgrade for me.
So basically:

Cons: It's the most powerful *_tablet_* on the market
The Cons: Deliberatley hamstringed abilities.

I could see maybe a different hinge design allowing for more degrees of motion (I would’ve preferred if you could “bring it towards you” like you can with the Surface Laptop Studio), but to do the 360° of rotation as shown off would require changes that no one’s really asking for. @@cheezy2455 The accuracy and quality of the pencil are exceptionally good. But the design of the Apple pencil with all the double tapping and squeezing, that stuff is incredibly inefficient. I feel like there almost has to be some reason like "with the extra space there it still isn't enough for a better battery" or something so they would rather shave it off anyways & use the thinness for marketing purposes. @@MaxRollison They're running out of copouts for just making bigger batteries

Real question: are there humans out there that really care about their electronics being this thin?
Correction at 6:41, the USB-C port is Thunderbolt 3 / USB 4 compliant. Thunderbolt 4 certification requires support for at least 2 external monitors through the USB-C port while the M4 chip only supports a single external monitor. It's the same as the M1 and M2 iPads.

the magic keyboard hinge is limited because if it went further back, it would tip over more easily because unlike with a laptop, the weight is mostly in the screen so pushing it too far back means the center of gravity is past the hinge and it tips over. i haven’t personally tested this with the new magic keyboard but i daily drive the old one and that thing is so well balanced. i’m actually surprised they were able to get the new one straight and not angled forward like the old one. i also really like the fact that it doesn’t fold over because i don’t want to be putting my keyboard and glass trackpad on whatever surface i put it down on. i have a dbrand skin on the ipad itself to protect against scratches and i’d rather put that on the table than the keyboard side. just personal preference though, i like it you don’t

@@Optimistas777 LOL. Not going to defend some of what people want from iPad OS. But at least in my case I need it to run field apps that only exist on iPad. Not Mac or Windows. The bigger Tab S9 Ultra with its wider aspect ratio might be what you're after

Yeah, but that's an easy fix: adding a kickstand. They sacrifice usability with aesthetics, which is why I assume Linus is pissed.

I tried really hard to tell some of my friends to either not upgrade or buy one of the older models refurbished cuz all the M1 stuff is just so good still. It’s a waste unless you really need something that is being added to the newer devices like a video encoder or something else specific to M3 or M4 ….
Most people don’t even use the power from their old iPad pros 😂
My m1 ipad pro is still killing it with no signs stopping... it mostly does netflix and D+ and some kitchen work... it did survive fall from the car going onto the interstate at 45mph with a spec case
the fun thing with the iPad Pro is that they're so ridiculously over-spec'd that a six-year-old model will still work perfectly for most use cases
(this means that you won't need to upgrade for another few years unless Apple seriously beefs up iPadOS)
@@waytoobiasedexactly, even if I want the m4 so much, i still have the m1 that is so good, i will probably have it for many more years
@@waytoobiased It was really surprising to me they put started putting the M1+ into the iPad for this reason! for me on an old Intel Macbook I can't wait to get over to either a used M1 Pro 2021 or maybe an M3 Air when the back to school event starts at Apple, but there's still no reason in my mind for any current iPad users to jump for this upgrade unless they're professional illustrators that would benefit greatly from the new pencil pro, or for for me to get such a beefy iPad while it's stuck on the portable-only iPadOS either.

11:03 two angles to everything
As a perfectionist researcher, kind of geek person I bought the air and a new iPad Pro - because I wanted a little bit larger size than my iPad Pro 11 from 2018. After benchmarking I literally had my jaw hit the floor because they were almost identical! But you know what I kept the pro and I’m gonna tell you why. First off the air gets very hot when charging. Heat when charging equals short life span. Plus and I know a lot of people don’t do this, I use it to read Kindle books on and the refresh rate did actually hurt my eyes on the air. But otherwise almost freaking identical. I’m also an artist and use Procreate and I don’t know what all the fluff people are talking about with the experience being poor - it was fine for me
But ultimately even with the higher price of the pro - I know I’ve got something that’s gonna last for quite a few years and The lightness of the pad for me is key because I have it on my lap for drawing often, and I also have an arm that gets sore very quickly if I’m trying to hold the other ones.
That should be base level functionality
But ultimately, I know have a tablet that I can use as a computer with my external touchpad and keyboard, and also I get a bit of a longer daily battery life than the air.
Apple should be able to engineer around physics, duh!
@@TalesOfWarExactly! Therefore the new pencil needs to be backwards compatible. Doesn’t matter if the coils for wireless charging are not in the right spot!
I understand they need to have a different hinge design for balancing purposes, but this seems to be an easy fix with just an extra hinge
I understand that they need to have a different hinge for balancing purposes but to be able to lay it down flat should be an easy with with just a second hinge at the base
@@TheMaxi98King but how would you charge the pencil if the coils don’t line up on older iPads
I mean yea compared to an iPhone or Samsung phone they really are a steal with all the work you can do and what you get. iPhones/S24 ultra being $1000-1500 is completely insane for them they should be like $800 max price not starting out 😂
I do think they are over priced especially now with like a 200-300 price hike over the last generation.
It isnt so "toy OS"

No need. We already know which one is better in those two departments.
This iPad is leaps and bounds ahead of Tab S9 ultra in both.
U lnow the S9 Ultra is like way older.
The Ipad already demolished the S24U which has the better chip.

If the hinge didn't lock out at 90 degrees, it would just always fall over since the iPad is way heavier than the keyboard...
the keyboard (in its entirety) weighs a lot more than the new iPad. It's nuts, but it does.

11:26 "you broke it" 😂
One MASSIVELY important part about the IPad Pro lineup is the fact that they have a laminated display and every other iPad has a stacked display.
This means that when writing with the pen on the Pro, the tip has no noticeable distance to the line you’re drawing, when on all other models, there is a noticeable gap - which REALLY throws you off when writing or drawing
you seem to have forgotten Ipad Airs..
even the iPad minis since the 4th gen have had laminated displays - and that was in 2015
It's funny, that right in the introduction Linus says "I'd either use my phone, or my laptop."
I remember the launch of the original, first generation iPad, the first one ever.
As someone who has a desktop PC and no laptop it's like a casual laptop that allows me to not have to sit at my desk all the time
@@sigmachad96
I think there's a huge advantage though to getting an actual laptop that does run full desktop software, instead of phone apps.

I think a lot of people miss the market of students who are children of middle to upper middle class families who use the ipad pros for their screen sizes to take notes. The screen size alone is the reason why I bought it so that I can take notes, and the amazing battery life is a plus, too.
Honestly the air does just the same, the pro is unnecessary imo
you dont need a pro for doing the most basic tasks, this is more for people who work with more intensive apps and want to bring something portable as well
but u don't need a M4 iPad Pro to take notes. my M1 Pro does it well too. I am waiting for wwdc to see if they will add a better file manager to ipadOS18.
@@dgnu I chose it for the screen size as well. As far as I am aware, I don't think the air comes in a 12.9 or 13 inch model.
Things I wish it had/supported:
1) Better key bind customization.

For me the main differences between the M1 12.9 1 TB and the M4 13 1 TB are:
