- This video is a message to my 17 year-old self. The guy who only ever read Stephen King and found only disappointment everywhere else. I needed to know about authors that go well with Stephen King. So I give you these five authors you need to read if you love Stephen King.
Obviously I read many more amazing authors - but a lot of those other authors have less in common with King. Ania Ahlborn, Jack Ketchum, Clive Barker, Kealan Patrick Burke, Sarah Pinborough, Jason Pargin, these are all incredible authors but they are too different to compare to King in my opinion.

As someone who has been stuck on stupid with King and was worried I wouldn’t find any other writers to scratch that particular itch I appreciate this video Jeff. I already picked up Goblin on your recommendation and can’t wait to get to it. Thank you again 🙏
Oh that's awesome. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
There's a reason King is such a giant in fiction. Few others do exactly what he does. See if you connect with Malerman or any of the other 4. Happy reading!
Goblin is awesome, it’s one of my favorite Malerman books. -Syn
I probably would have never discovered the likes of Josh Malerman, Philip Fracassi, Thomas Olde Heuvelt to name a few, if it weren’t for your channel Jeff. More than actual content, all the authors you mentioned and then some, tap into the SK “fix” because of style. It’s a sense a familiarity. Like coming home to SK-ville. That’s what I felt when I first discovered McCammon 30 some years ago. Great video as usual.
Yeah McCammon is familiar country if you've read a lot of King. And this community has shown me so many authors I wouldn't have known otherwise.
Joe Lansdale is the man. He's a super nice guy too. I ordered a signed copy of WET JUJU but when I got it the previous owner had ripped out the signed pages! Infuriating right? Thankfully the website gave me a refund and said I could keep it. And I happened to mention it on a Joe fan page on Facebook and Joe himself reached out to me and offered to sign it personally for me if I wouldn't mind paying to ship it back and forth. I was able to use the refund money to pay for shipping. I also got to meet him a couple years prior to that on a book tour. I had the chance to tell him how his writing made me a better person. His writing made me question many aspects of my southern environment and helped me break the cycle of ignorance I was brought up in. I'll always be grateful to him for that. He's a fantastic writer, great human being, and he could kick our asses. Lol. He's also a martial arts international Hall of Famer with his own martial arts system, Shen Chuan. He's good at writing grit. There's always a point in his books, usually the last 60 pages or so, that you're unable to put it down. You have to finish the book by that point. Lol. THE THICKET was supposed to be made into a movie produced by and starring Peter Dinklage. But I think it got stuck in development hell. And Bill Paxton was going to direct an adaptation of THE BOTTOMS but he passed away. RIP Bill Paxton. Which after he showed his directing chops on the movie FRAILTY, you know he would have done an awesome job with THE BOTTOMS. Bill and Joe were even friends. They hung out and went fishing a few times, as Joe put it.
That's AWESOME! Thank you for sharing that here. Joe definitely deserves a huge readership and I can't believe I didn't know about him earlier. But I'm so glad I did. No one human should have so much talent but then there's Joe making the rest of us feel inferior. :D
"Thank you Bentley Little" 😀
I shouldn't do that! :D
@@THEJEFFWORD Nah. He just writes the same book over and over.
Pretty soon your backdrop is going to be a bar. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but you may have to start reviewing stouts and liquors. 😁
I had a video lined up called Beer Run where I take viewers to my local south side liquor store. But I never posted it because I didn't finish all the reviews.
Beef daddy with the swag! I’m currently reading Unbury Carol by Malerman, he’s one of my favs. Thank you for all the great recommendations! ☺️📚 -Syn
You’re welcome!! There are so many great authors out there and quite a few with little in common with King.
Some of these I’ve read, some I haven’t. Great job putting together a coherent, thoughtful discussion that brings these authors’ work together.
Thank you, Patrick! The key word there is discussion. I learn a hell of a lot more than I preach in these collecting communities.
I am actually lucky enough to have an autographed copy of Swan Song personalized to me from McCammon on of my favorites of him also would recommend They Thirst by him....My third favorite author behind King, and Bachman :)
That's awfully high praise and I agree 100%. The only McCammon I didn't really care for was Stinger. I didn't finish it. I don't remember why. I should give it another shot. I've never read They Thirst! I'll move it up the stack. Thank you!
Stinger is defiantly worth another chance :)
Fantastic presentation. Editing was perfect. Really enjoyed the finishing logo👍🏻
I hired someone to do the editing
If anyone is looking for any other authors similar to Stephen King, I think Dan Simmons has a very similar story telling style, with being as graphic as King. The Terror is probably my favorite of his, but Summer of Night definitely reminds me of IT.
I haven't yet read Simmons and I think that might be a major oversight on my part. I've gotten a couple of his books from thrift stores because I know I need to read him.
Me and Stephen king books are always in conflict. Definitely a comfort zone and this is a perfect video to help me remember. I have recently started an addiction to Robert McCammon this year, Currently have 8 books.
I've been trying to find an affordable copy of Wolf's Hour--one of my favorite of McCammon's. Since I recorded this video, Fracassi published A Child Alone With Strangers. I did a review on this channel and I think it's one of my favorites of his. I'm really glad this video is helping you read better books.
One of my favorite horror writers that I feel should get an honorable mention for this video is Brian Keene. His first couple of big hits, THE RISING and CITY OF THE DEAD were a couple of the most original zombie books to come out in a while. He's great at building his own mythology to his books. THE CONQUEROR WORMS aka EARTHWORM GODS is one of the best horror books I've ever read. And URBAN GOTHIC is a suburb stand alone book, it's like THE HILLS HAVE EYES set in an old creepy house in a rundown part of Baltimore (I think that was the setting, East Coast for sure).
I've never read Keene but that will change soon. And I'm happy to see suggestions like yours. I'm sure there are a ton of authors that King fans would love to see compared to King.
@@THEJEFFWORD Oh man, Keene is awesome. One of his books that I felt was close to King was the book TERMINAL. But you could put a board up with all his book titles, throw a dart, and read the book the dart landed on, and be satisfied.
Another great episode.
Thank you again, Scully!
The beginning hooked me lol I have had that issue with having my king safety net.
It's an island. And there are sharks in the water. You don't trust any boat or bridge off of King island. I've been there.
Swan Song definitely has lots going for it; anyone worried it's a Stand rip-off can stop worrying (very different story).
That's.a good point. In fact, none of these books are a rip-off of King's work. Not in the slightest.
Anything by McCammon is good. A far better writer than King. In my opinion.
Well done
Those kudos belong to Producer Jill! She edited this one.
@@THEJEFFWORD then please give my thanks to the lovely Jill. She did do a great job.
SST is doing such an amazing service to Joe R. fans with those story collections, especially for the price. (Hell, most SST books are incredible bang for the buck). Lansdale is my favorite author, bar none. In my opinion, humor is INCREDIBLY hard to pull off on the printed page. So often it just seems forced, or "wacky," or "zany." But Joe has me laughing out loud on damn-near every other page.
And I knows you hates you some Bentley Little, but my only experience has been his latest ("Gloria"), and I freakin' loved it!
P.S.: I'll help you move down to TN in exchange for that SubPress "Swan Song." Or your "Boy's Life." I'm local. Hit me up. :)
Hahahahaha I bought my Boy's Life at McKay's in Tennessee! It's a first edition hardcover for $5! Crazy! You're right about humor. It's harder than horror. No doubt.
I'm open to trying any book. Even a Little book.
Hi I’m just a new subscriber. Thank you ever so much for suggestion of these books. I am just in the middle of reading goblin wow. I am legally blind and so to go on UA-cam and get someone to talk about different authors makes it really easy when I’m trying to buy audiobooks thank you again
Oh that makes me feel like I'm actually useful! And I'm thrilled to be able to help guide you to new authors and experiences. I know tastes vary but I hope you like what you read based on my recommendations. Nothing feels better than sharing the joy I feel with these books.
Oh I enjoy your UA-cam channel very much! I have been going back over your formal videos and have come across more books that I’m just dying to try :-) I have got a Robert McAdam book called the mystery walk. I could not find the books that you had on there but I did write to the audiobook people and ask them if they could maybe get a couple others and a couple of the other authors that you had suggested. OK I have talked enough. I really hope that this is readable. It does not read it back to me and I can’t read it lol thank you again and please keep putting this out there so much fun
@@donnara8379 this makes me so happy!! I do hope you enjoy.
its in italian, how am i suppose to read fracassi?
He's been translated a bunch of ways but all his stuff first appears in english. That's his native language.
Few! Five authors I don't have to read! 🤣 Perhaps a video of five psychotherapists for muckers like me who don't like King? 😂 All power to you, baby!
AH! But the mad genius behind my video is that I also claim these authors are different in some key aspects that may make the difference for you!
@@THEJEFFWORD Oh, No! You got me with your legal mumbo-jumbo!
has anybody really asked for a refund on this tutorial yet jeff? 😂😂😂
Not directly! I think they just unsubscribe. Or put voodoo curses on me. I feel cursed.
Stephen King is WAY over rated.
On some measures, I'd completely agree. But he's caught the attention and affection of a lot of readers because he's a great storyteller. His stuff is very accessible and doesn't require much of the reader. But there are things hiding in the books for those who want to read a little deeper.
