The man in black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed.
Its funny watching this after Daniel's conversion to king
The first book is sooo much better after you finish the series and come back for a re read
I am glad that I am not the only one who thinks Stephen King is not the best author ever.
this book can't take Mistborn and make it better...The Dark Tower was written in 1982...Mistborn was written in 2006...24 years apart. Mistborn would have taken The Dark Tower and made a weaker version of its landscape. If my math is right...
I haven’t read the dark tower series but I believe Stephen King himself said the gunslinger wasn’t his best work and many people I know agree and believe the series gets better after
This is the only book of the series I like, I quit in the middle of the fourth book because the rest of the series didn't go anywhere and was super boring.
I'm on the second book now and find the series frustratingly intriguing. I'm hooked.
TBH, I’m not crazy about Stephen King either.
I will say Stephen King wrote The Gunslinger really early on in his career and he felt that he needed to write in the high fantasy style before realizing what he should’ve done from the start
I have always been surprised that there haven't more fantasy westerns.
Shit's about to get real crazy for you Daniel. The first book is a masterpiece once you've read the second and third. You'll see
Daniel, can you read The Dark Tower?
Roland let the Jake die. He did not directly kill him. It was a choice between the quest he has been on his whole life, and saving a new friend. I am not saying the decision was good, only that there was much more to it.
Hey!!! Can you make a list of the next five books that you are 100% going to read!!! That way we can watch your videos without spoilers! I know you often mention what books are on the horizon! However, a definite list would be super helpful!
Glad you got a chance to read The Gunslinger. I liked how the first book in the series was relatively short compare to his other works. It gave you a nice preview of the world he's created.
Daniel, I think your reaction to Roland's character is entirely understandable. Without spoiling anything, for reasons you will discover if you continue in the series, he has cut himself off, and is the quintessential loner at this point. A rough shorthand comparison would be Lan's stonewalling before Nynaeve got through to him (and even then he was pretty stalwart).
This is my least favorite book of the series. The series itself is one of my favourite series ever written. Personally, I like it more than the wheel of time.
Terrific review Daniel! I'm SO excited for you to continue with this series (in your own time, ofc); i really feel it could be your thing, unlike some other commenters on here.
I liked the action scenes and the confrontation with the man in black, but I felt the same way you did with the writing style. Good luck with the rest of the series, I wasn't able to continue after the gunslinger
